And Shaphan the
scribe came to the
king, and brought the
king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.
And Shaphan the
scribe went to the
king and reported, “Your servants have paid out the money that was found in the temple and have put it into the hands of the workers and supervisors of the house of the LORD.”
And Shaphan the
scribe shewed the
king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the
king.
Moreover, Shaphan the
scribe told the
king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the
king.
And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
When the
king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he
tore his clothes
And the
king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the
scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the
king’s, saying,
and commanded Hilkiah the priest,
Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the
scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the
king:
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the words of the book that the
king of Judah has read,
But to the
king of Judah which sent you to
enquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
‘Therefore I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the
calamity that I will bring on this place.’” So they brought her answer back to the
king.
And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.
Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the prophets—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And the
king stood by a
pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his
testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.
So the
king stood by the
pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.
And the
king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for
Baal, and for the
grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto
Bethel.
Then the
king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests second in rank, and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for
Baal, Asherah, and all the host of heaven. And he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried their ashes to
Bethel.
And he put down the
idolatrous priests, whom the
kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto
Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
Josiah also did away with the
idolatrous priests ordained by the
kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem—those who had burned incense to
Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.
And he took away the horses that the
kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of
Nathan-melech the
chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, and burned the
chariots of the sun with fire.
And he removed from the entrance to the house of the LORD the horses that the
kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the chamber of an official named
Nathan-melech. And
Josiah burned up the
chariots of the sun.
And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of
Ahaz, which the
kings of Judah had made, and the altars which
Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the
king beat down, and
brake them down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the
brook Kidron.
He pulled down the altars that the
kings of Judah had set up on the roof near the upper chamber of
Ahaz, and the altars that
Manasseh had set up in the two courtyards of the house of the LORD. The
king pulverized them there and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley.
And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the
king of Israel had builded for
Ashtoreth the
abomination of the Zidonians, and for
Chemosh the
abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the
abomination of the children of
Ammon, did the
king defile.
Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the
king asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the
kings of Israel had made to
provoke the LORD to anger,
Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in
Bethel.
Just as
Josiah had done at
Bethel, so also in the cities of Samaria he removed all the shrines of the high places set up by the
kings of Israel who had
provoked the LORD to anger.
And the
king commanded all the people, saying, Keep the
passover unto the LORD your God, as it is written in the book of this covenant.
The
king commanded all the people, “Keep the
Passover of the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”
Surely there was not
holden such a
passover from the days of the judges that judged Israel, nor in all the days of the
kings of Israel, nor of the
kings of Judah;
No such
Passover had been observed from the days of the judges who had governed Israel through all the days of the
kings of Israel and Judah.
And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
Neither before nor after
Josiah was there any
king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses.
Now the rest of the acts of
Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the
kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Josiah, along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the
Kings of Judah?
In his days Pharaoh-nechoh
king of Egypt went up against the
king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: and
king Josiah went against him; and he
slew him at
Megiddo, when he had seen him.
At the end of
Josiah’s reign, Pharaoh Neco
king of Egypt marched up to help the
king of Assyria at the Euphrates River.
King Josiah went out to
confront him, but Neco faced him and killed him at
Megiddo.
From
Megiddo his servants carried his body in a
chariot, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. Then the people of the land took
Jehoahaz son of
Josiah,
anointed him, and made him
king in place of his father.
Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of
Libnah.
Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became
king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from
Libnah.
And Pharaoh-nechoh made Eliakim the son of
Josiah king in the room of
Josiah his father, and turned his name to
Jehoiakim, and took
Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died there.
Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of
Josiah king in place of his father
Josiah, and he changed Eliakim’s name to
Jehoiakim. But Neco took
Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, where he died.
Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became
king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah; she was from Rumah.
In his days
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and
Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him.
Now the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the
kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the
Kings of Judah?
And the
king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land: for the
king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that
pertained to the
king of Egypt.
Now the
king of Egypt did not march out of his land again, because the
king of Babylon had taken all his territory, from the
Brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother’s name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became
king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem.
At that time the servants of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.
At that time the servants of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched up to Jerusalem, and the city came under siege.
And
Jehoiachin the
king of Judah went out to the
king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: and the
king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign.
Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants, his commanders, and his officials all surrendered to the
king of Babylon. So in the eighth year of his reign, the
king of Babylon took him
captive.
And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, as the LORD had said.
As the LORD had declared,
Nebuchadnezzar also carried off all the treasures from the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he cut into pieces all the gold articles that Solomon
king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD.
And he carried away
Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the
king’s mother, and the
king’s wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.
Nebuchadnezzar carried away
Jehoiachin to Babylon, as well as the
king’s mother, his wives, his officials, and the leading men of the land. He took them into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and
craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all that were strong and apt for war, even them the
king of Babylon brought
captive to Babylon.
The
king of Babylon also brought into exile to Babylon all seven thousand men of
valor and a thousand
craftsmen and metalsmiths—all strong and fit for battle.
And the
king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father’s brother
king in his
stead, and changed his name to
Zedekiah.
Then the
king of Babylon made Mattaniah,
Jehoiachin’s uncle,
king in his place and changed his name to
Zedekiah.
Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of
Libnah.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became
king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from
Libnah.
For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that
Zedekiah rebelled against the
king of Babylon.
For because of the anger of the LORD, all this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until He finally banished them from His presence. And
Zedekiah also rebelled against the
king of Babylon.
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a siege wall all around it.
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the
king, and overtook him in the plains of
Jericho: and all his army were scattered from him.
but the army of the Chaldeans pursued the
king and overtook him in the plains of
Jericho, and all his army was separated from him.
So they took the king, and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him.
The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where they pronounced judgment on him.
And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the
nineteenth year of
king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, a servant of the
king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem:
On the seventh day of the fifth month, in the
nineteenth year of
Nebuchadnezzar’s reign over Babylon, Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, a servant of the
king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem.
And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire.
He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem—every
significant building.
Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the
king of Babylon, with the
remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the population.
And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the
king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal
scribe of the host, which
mustered the people of the land, and
threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city:
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as five royal advisors. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
And Nebuzar-adan captain of the guard took these, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah:
Nebuzaradan captain of the guard took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.
And the
king of Babylon
smote them, and
slew them at Riblah in the land of
Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.
There at Riblah in the land of
Hamath, the
king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death. So Judah was taken into exile, away from its own land.
And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler.
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over the people he had left behind in the land of Judah.
And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the
king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to
Mizpah, even
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.
When all the commanders of the armies and their men heard that the
king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at
Mizpah—
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, as well as their men.
And Gedaliah
sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the
king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.
And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the
king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.”
And it came to pass in the seven and
thirtieth year of the captivity of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the
twelfth month, on the seven and
twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach
king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up the head of
Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison;
On the twenty-seventh day of the
twelfth month of the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Judah’s
King Jehoiachin, in the year Evil-merodach became
king of Babylon, he released
King Jehoiachin of Judah from prison.
And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon;
And he spoke kindly to
Jehoiachin and set his throne above the thrones of the other
kings who were with him in Babylon.
And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life.
So
Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes, and he
dined regularly at the
king’s table for the rest of his life.
And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life.
And the
king provided
Jehoiachin a daily portion for the rest of his life.
Now these are the
kings that reigned in the land of
Edom before any
king reigned over the children of Israel;
Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
These are the
kings who reigned in the land of
Edom before any
king reigned over the Israelites:
Bela son of Beor. His city was named Dinhabah.
The third,
Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai
king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith:
the third was
Absalom the son of
Maacah daughter of
King Talmai of Geshur; the fourth was Adonijah the son of Haggith;
These were the potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work.
These were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the service of the king.
And these written by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah, and
smote their tents, and the habitations that were found there, and destroyed them utterly unto this day, and dwelt in their rooms: because there was pasture there for their flocks.
These who were noted by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites and Meunites there in their dwellings,
devoting them to destruction even to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks.
Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser
king of Assyria carried away
captive: he was prince of the Reubenites.
and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria carried into exile.
All these were reckoned by
genealogies in the days of Jotham
king of Judah, and in the days of
Jeroboam king of Israel.
All of them were reckoned in the
genealogies during the reigns of Jotham
king of Judah and
Jeroboam king of Israel.
And the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser
king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
So the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser
king of Assyria) to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh into exile. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they remain to this day.
So all Israel were reckoned by
genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the
kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their
transgression.
So all Israel was recorded in the
genealogies written in the Book of the
Kings of Israel. But Judah was exiled to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.
Who hitherto waited in the
king’s gate eastward: they were
porters in the companies of the children of Levi.
Shallum was their chief; he was previously stationed at the King’s Gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the Levites.
And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he
slew him, and turned the
kingdom unto David the son of
Jesse.
and he failed to inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the
kingdom over to David son of
Jesse.
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was
king, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was
king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And the LORD your God said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the
king to
Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in
Hebron before the LORD; and they
anointed David
king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the
king at
Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD. And they
anointed him
king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
Now these were the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who, together with all Israel,
bolstered and strengthened his
kingdom, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to
Hebron, to turn the
kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.
Now these are the numbers of men armed for battle who came to David at
Hebron to turn Saul’s
kingdom over to him, in accordance with the word of the LORD:
And of the half tribe of
Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come and make David
king.
From the half-tribe of
Manasseh: 18,000 designated by name to come and make David
king.
All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to
Hebron, to make David
king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David
king.
All these men of war,
arrayed for battle, came to
Hebron fully determined to make David
king over all Israel. And all the rest of the Israelites were of one mind to make David
king.
Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him an house.
Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with
cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters, to build a palace for him.
And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.
And David realized that the LORD had established him as
king over Israel and had highly
exalted his
kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
And when the Philistines heard that David was
anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.
When the Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went out to face them.
And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw
king David dancing and playing: and she
despised him in her heart.
As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked down from a window and saw
King David dancing and
celebrating, and she
despised him in her heart.
And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;
they
wandered from nation to nation, from one
kingdom to another.
He suffered no man to do them wrong:
yea, he reproved
kings for their sakes,
And it shall come to pass, when thy days be
expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his
kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his
kingdom.
But I will settle him in mine house and in my
kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for
evermore.
But I will set him over My house and My
kingdom forever, and his throne will be established
forever.”
And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
And David
smote Hadarezer
king of Zobah unto
Hamath, as he went to
stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates.
As far as
Hamath, David also defeated
King Hadadezer of Zobah, who had marched out to establish his dominion along the Euphrates River.
And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer
king of Zobah, David
slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.
When the Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men.
Now when Tou
king of
Hamath heard how David had
smitten all the host of Hadarezer
king of Zobah;
When
King Tou of
Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer
king of Zobah,
He sent Hadoram his son to
king David, to
enquire of his
welfare, and to
congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and
smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.
he sent his son Hadoram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze,
Them also
king David dedicated unto the LORD, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations; from
Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of
Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.
and
King David dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold he had carried off from all these nations—from
Edom and Moab, and from the
Ammonites, Philistines, and
Amalekites.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king.
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief officials at the king’s side.
Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the
king of the children of
Ammon died, and his son reigned in his
stead.
Some time later, Nahash
king of the
Ammonites died and was succeeded by his son.
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
ashamed. And the
king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly
humiliated. The
king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
So they
hired thirty and two thousand
chariots, and the
king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of
Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
So they
hired for themselves thirty-two thousand
chariots, as well as the
king of
Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the
Ammonites came from their cities and marched out for battle.
And the children of
Ammon came out, and put the battle in
array before the gate of the city: and the
kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
The
Ammonites marched out and
arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance to the city, while the
kings who had come stayed by themselves in the open country.
And it came to pass, that after the year was
expired, at the time that
kings go out to battle,
Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of
Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried at Jerusalem. And
Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.
In the spring, at the time when
kings march out to war,
Joab led out the army and
ravaged the land of the
Ammonites. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. And
Joab attacked Rabbah and
demolished it.
And David took the crown of their
king from off his head, and found it to
weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David’s head: and he brought also exceeding much
spoil out of the city.
Then David took the crown from the head of their
king. It was found to
weigh a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And
Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the
king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then
doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of
trespass to Israel?
But
Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply His troops a hundred times over. My lord the
king, are they not all servants of my lord? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
Nevertheless the
king’s word prevailed against
Joab. Wherefore
Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
Nevertheless, the
king’s word prevailed against
Joab. So
Joab departed and traveled throughout Israel, and then he returned to Jerusalem.
But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the
king’s word was
abominable to
Joab.
But
Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count, because the
king’s command was
detestable to him.
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the
king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “My lord the
king may take whatever seems good. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the
threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
And
king David said to Ornan,
Nay; but I will
verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
“No,” replied
King David, “I
insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you, nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
