And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in
law to
Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I
chased him from me.
Even one of the sons of Jehoiada son of Eliashib the high priest had become a son-in-
law to
Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I drove him away from me.
And the drinking was according to the
law; none did
compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment:

What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to
law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king
Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
“According to
law,” he asked, “what should be done with Queen Vashti, since she refused to obey the command of King
Xerxes delivered by the eunuchs?”
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the
laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the
laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a woman better than she.
And
Haman said unto king
Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and
dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their
laws are
diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’s
laws: therefore it is not for the king’s profit to suffer them.
Then
Haman informed King
Xerxes, “There is a certain people scattered and
dispersed among the peoples of every province of your kingdom. Their
laws are different from
everyone else’s, and they do not obey the king’s
laws. So it is not in the king’s best interest to
tolerate them.

All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one
law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one
law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the
law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the
law. And if I perish, I perish!”

law of the LORD; and in his
law doth he
meditate day and night.
But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.

Law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is
trustworthy, making wise the simple.

falter.

yea, thy
law is within my heart.
I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.”
Give ear, O my people, to my
law:
incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
Give ear, O my people, to my instruction;
listen to the words of my mouth.
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children,
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
They failed to keep God’s covenant and refused to live by His law.
For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
For this is a statute for Israel, an
ordinance of the God of Jacob.
If his children
forsake my
law, and walk not in my judgments;
If his sons
forsake My
law and do not walk in My judgments,
Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;
Blessed is the man You discipline, O LORD, and teach from Your law,
Shall the throne of iniquity have
fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a
law?
Can a corrupt throne be Your ally— one
devising mischief by decree?
And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a
law, and to Israel for an
everlasting covenant:
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an
everlasting covenant:
That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD.
that they might keep His statutes and obey His
laws.
Hallelujah!
Blessed are the
undefiled in the way, who walk in the
law of the LORD.
Blessed are those whose way is
blameless, who walk in the
Law of the LORD.
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of thy
law.
Open my eyes that I may see
wondrous things from Your
law.
Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy
law graciously.
Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy
law;
yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Give me understanding that I may obey Your law, and follow it with all my heart.
So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.
I will always obey Your
law,
forever and ever.
The proud have had me greatly in
derision: yet have I not declined from thy
law.

forsake thy
law.

reject Your
law.

robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy
law.

forget Your
law.
Their heart is as fat as
grease; but I delight in thy
law.
Their hearts are hard and
callous, but I delight in Your
law.
The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
The law from Your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver.
Let thy tender
mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy
law is my delight.
May Your
compassion come to me, that I may live, for Your
law is my delight.
The proud have
digged pits for me, which are not after thy
law.
Unless thy
law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine
affliction.
If Your
law had not been my delight, then I would have perished in my
affliction.
O how love I thy
law! it is my
meditation all the day.
Oh, how I love Your
law! All day long it is my
meditation.
My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not
forget thy
law.
I constantly take my life in my hands, yet I do not
forget Your
law.
I
hate vain thoughts: but thy
law do I love.
The double-minded I
despise, but Your
law I love.
It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law.
It is time for the LORD to act, for they have broken Your law.
Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.
My eyes shed streams of tears because Your law is not obeyed.
Thy righteousness is an
everlasting righteousness, and thy
law is the truth.
Your righteousness is
everlasting and Your
law is true.
They draw
nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy
law.
Those who follow after wickedness draw near; they are far from Your law.
I
hate and
abhor lying: but thy
law do I love.
Great peace have they which love thy
law: and nothing shall
offend them.

law; nothing can make them
stumble.

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and
forsake not the
law of thy mother:
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not
forsake the teaching of your mother.
My son,
forget not my
law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
My son, do not
forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;
For I give you good doctrine,
forsake ye not my
law.
For I give you sound teaching; do not
abandon my directive.
My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and
forsake not the
law of thy mother:
My son, keep your father’s commandment, and do not
forsake your mother’s teaching.
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
For this commandment is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way to life,
Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
By me kings reign, and rulers
enact just
laws;
The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning one from the snares of death.
They that
forsake the
law praise the wicked: but such as keep the
law contend with them.
Those who
forsake the
law praise the wicked, but those who keep the
law resist them.
Whoso keepeth the
law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of
riotous men shameth his father.
A
discerning son keeps the
law, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
He that turneth away his ear from hearing the
law, even his prayer shall be
abomination.
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the Law.
lest they drink and
forget what is decreed, depriving all the
oppressed of justice.

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of
Sodom; give ear unto the
law of our God, ye people of
Gomorrah.
Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of
Sodom;
listen to the instruction of our God, you people of
Gomorrah!
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of
Zion shall go forth the
law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths.” For the
law will go forth from
Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Therefore as the fire devoureth the
stubble, and the flame consumeth the
chaff, so their root shall be as
rottenness, and their
blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the
law of the LORD of hosts, and
despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will decay and their blossoms will blow away like dust; for they have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and
despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
Bind up the testimony and seal the law among my disciples.
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
To the
law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of
dawn.
That this is a
rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the
law of the LORD:
These are
rebellious people,
deceitful children, children unwilling to obey the LORD’s instruction.
For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our
lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.
For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our
lawgiver, the LORD is our King. It is He who will save us.
He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
He will not grow weak or discouraged before He has established justice on the earth. In His law the islands will put their hope.”
The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will
magnify the
law, and make it honourable.

magnify His
law and make it glorious.
Who gave Jacob for a
spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have
sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they
obedient unto his
law.
Who gave Jacob up for
spoil, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have
sinned? They were unwilling to walk in His ways, and they would not obey His
law.
Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the
lawful captive delivered?
Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a
law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.
Pay attention to Me, My people, and
listen to Me, My nation; for a
law will go out from Me, and My justice will become a light to the nations; I will bring it about quickly.
Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my
law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.
Listen to Me, you who know what is right, you people with My
law in your hearts: Do not fear the
scorn of men; do not be broken by their insults.
The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the
law knew me not: the pastors also
transgressed against me, and the prophets
prophesied by
Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the LORD?’ The experts in the
law no longer knew Me, and the leaders rebelled against Me. The prophets
prophesied by
Baal and followed useless idols.
Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not
hearkened unto my words, nor to my
law, but rejected it.
Hear, O earth! I am bringing
disaster on this people, the fruit of their own schemes, because they have paid no attention to My word and have rejected My instruction.
How do ye say, We are wise, and the
law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the
scribes is in vain.
How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the
Law of the LORD is with us,’ when in fact the lying pen of the
scribes has produced a
deception?
And the LORD saith, Because they have
forsaken my
law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
And the LORD answered, “It is because they have
forsaken My
law, which I set before them; they have not walked in it or obeyed My voice.
Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have
forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have
forsaken me, and have not kept my
law;
Then you are to answer them: ‘It is because your fathers have
forsaken Me, declares the LORD, and followed other gods, and served and worshiped them. They abandoned Me and did not keep My instruction.
Then said they, Come, and let us
devise devices against Jeremiah; for the
law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us
smite him with the tongue, and let us not give
heed to any of his words.
Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the
law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise, nor an
oracle to the prophet. Come, let us
denounce him and pay no
heed to any of his words.”
And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; If ye will not
hearken to me, to walk in my
law, which I have set before you,
And you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘If you do not
listen to Me and walk in My
law, which I have set before you,
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My
law in their minds and
inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.
So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:
Then I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy—
And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:
They came in and possessed it, but they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your
law. They failed to perform all that You commanded them to do, and so You have brought upon them all this
disaster.
They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.
To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed My instruction or the statutes that I set before you and your fathers.
Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his
law, nor in his statutes, nor in his
testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
Because you burned incense and
sinned against the LORD, and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His
testimonies, this
disaster has
befallen you, as you see
today.”
Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.
Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and
shattered their bars. Her king and her princes are exiled among the nations, the
law is no more, and even her prophets find no vision from the LORD.
To
subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.
Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.
Disaster upon
disaster will come, and
rumor after
rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction from the priests will perish, as will counsel from the elders.
But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:
Yet say ye, Why?
doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is
lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.
But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.
And one hath committed
abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath
lewdly defiled his daughter in
law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.
One man commits an
abomination with his
neighbor’s wife; another wickedly defiles his daughter-in-
law; and yet another
violates his sister, his own father’s daughter.
