And David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the
LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
David burned with anger against the man and said to
Nathan: “As surely as the
LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
And
Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the
LORD God of Israel, I
anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
Then
Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the
LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I
anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
Wherefore hast thou
despised the commandment of the
LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of
Ammon.
Why then have you
despised the command of the
LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own, for you have slain him with the sword of the
Ammonites.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the
LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad
daylight.
And David said unto
Nathan, I have
sinned against the
LORD. And
Nathan said unto David, The
LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
Then David said to
Nathan, “I have
sinned against the
LORD.” “The
LORD has taken away your sin,”
Nathan replied. “You will not die.
Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the
LORD to
blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
Nevertheless, because by this deed you have shown utter contempt for the word of the LORD, the son born to you will surely die.”
And
Nathan departed unto his house. And the
LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.
After
Nathan had gone home, the
LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill.
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and
anointed himself, and changed his
apparel, and came into the house of the
LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
Then David got up from the ground, washed and
anointed himself, changed his clothes, and went into the house of the
LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they set food before him, and he
ate.
And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and
wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be
gracious to me, that the child may live?
David answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and
wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The
LORD may be
gracious to me and let him live.’
And David comforted Bath-
sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the
LORD loved him.
Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. So she gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved the child
And he sent by the hand of
Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the
LORD.
and sent word through
Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah because the
LORD loved him.
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my
lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My
lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.
So now, my lord the king, do not take to heart the report that all the sons of the king are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.
But the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My
lord the king, may any
blame be on me and on my father’s house, and may the king and his throne be guiltless.”
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the
LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the
LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
Then the woman said, Let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my
lord the king. And he said, Say on.
Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak a word to my lord the king?” “Speak,” he replied.
Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my
lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy
handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his
handmaid.
Now therefore, I have come to present this matter to my
lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the request of his
maidservant.
Then thine
handmaid said, The word of my
lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my
lord the king to
discern good and bad: therefore the
LORD thy God will be with thee.
And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my
lord the king bring me rest, for my
lord the king is able to
discern good and evil, just like the angel of God. May the
LORD your God be with you.’”
Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not
conceal it from me!” “Let my
lord the king speak,” she replied.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my
lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my
lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my
lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my
lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
To
fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant
Joab done this thing: and my
lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
Joab your servant has done this to bring about this change of affairs, but my
lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that happens in the land.”
And
Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and
thanked the king: and
Joab said,
Today thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my
lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
Joab fell facedown in
homage and blessed the king. “
Today,” said
Joab, “your servant knows that he has found favor with you, my
lord the king, because the king has granted his request.”
And it came to pass after forty years, that
Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my
vow, which I have
vowed unto the
LORD, in
Hebron.
After four years had passed,
Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to
Hebron to
fulfill a
vow I have made to the
LORD.
For thy servant
vowed a
vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the
LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the
LORD.
For your servant made a
vow while dwelling in Geshur of
Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the
LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the
LORD in
Hebron.’”
And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do
whatsoever my
lord the king shall
appoint.
The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king decides, we are your servants.”
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the
LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
And the king said unto
Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the
LORD, he will bring me again, and
shew me both it, and his
habitation:
Then the king said to
Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the
LORD, He will bring me back and let me see both it and His dwelling place again.
Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that
pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I
humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my
lord, O king.
So the king said to Ziba, “All that belongs to Mephibosheth is now yours!” “I
humbly bow before you,” said Ziba. “May I find favor in your eyes, my
lord the king!”
The
LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose
stead thou hast reigned; and the
LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of
Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a
bloody man.
The
LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the
LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of your son
Absalom. See, you have come to ruin because you are a man of
bloodshed!”
Then said
Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog
curse my
lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog
curse my
lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!”
And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him
curse, because the
LORD hath said unto him,
Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?
But the king replied, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses me because the
LORD told him, ‘
Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why did you do this?’”
And David said to
Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my
bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this
Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him
curse; for the
LORD hath
bidden him.
Then David said to
Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son, my own flesh and blood, seeks my life. How much more, then, this
Benjamite! Leave him alone and let him
curse me, for the
LORD has told him so.
It may be that the
LORD will look on mine
affliction, and that the
LORD will requite me good for his
cursing this day.
And Hushai said unto
Absalom,
Nay; but whom the
LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I
abide.
“Not at all,” Hushai answered. “For the one chosen by the LORD, by the people, and by all the men of Israel—his I will be, and with him I will remain.
And
Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of
Ahithophel. For the
LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of
Ahithophel, to the intent that the
LORD might bring evil upon
Absalom.
Then
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok said, “Please let me run and tell the king the good news that the
LORD has
avenged him of his enemies.”
And
Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the
LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my
lord the king.
Then
Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” And he bowed facedown before the king. He continued, “Blessed be the
LORD your God! He has delivered up the men who raised their hands against my
lord the king.”
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said,
Tidings, my
lord the king: for the
LORD hath
avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
Just then the
Cushite came and said, “May my
lord the king hear the good news:
Today the
LORD has
avenged you of all who rose up against you!”
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my
lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee
hurt, be as that young man is.
The king asked the
Cushite, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And the
Cushite replied, “May what has become of the young man happen to the enemies of my
lord the king and to all who rise up against you to
harm you.”
Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak
comfortably unto thy servants: for I
swear by the
LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not
tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that
befell thee from thy youth until now.
Now therefore get up! Go out and speak comfort to your servants, for I
swear by the
LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will remain with you
tonight. This will be worse for you than all the
adversity that has
befallen you from your youth until now!”
And said unto the king, Let not my
lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did
perversely the day that my
lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
and said, “My
lord, do not hold me guilty, and do not remember your servant’s
wrongdoing on the day my
lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.
For thy servant
doth know that I have
sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my
lord the king.
For your servant knows that I have
sinned, so here I am
today as the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my
lord the king.”
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he
cursed the
LORD’S
anointed?
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he
cursed the
LORD’s
anointed?”
And he answered, My
lord, O king, my servant
deceived me: for thy servant said, I will
saddle me an
ass, that I may
ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is
lame.
“My
lord the king,” he replied, “because I am
lame, I said, ‘I will have my
donkey saddled so that I may
ride on it and go with the king.’ But my servant Ziba
deceived me,
And he hath
slandered thy servant unto my
lord the king; but my
lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.
and he has
slandered your servant to my
lord the king. Yet my
lord the king is like the angel of God, so do what is good in your eyes.
For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my
lord the king: yet
didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?
For all the house of my
grandfather deserves death from my
lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right, then, do I have to keep appealing to the king?”
And Mephibosheth said unto the king,
Yea, let him take all,
forasmuch as my
lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.
And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, since my lord the king has safely come to his own house, let Ziba take it all!”
I am this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my
lord the king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my
lord the king?
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And David said to
Abishai, Now shall
Sheba the son of Bichri do us more
harm than did
Absalom: take thou thy
lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him
fenced cities, and escape us.
And David said to
Abishai, “Now
Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more
harm than
Absalom. Take your
lord’s servants and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and
elude us.”
I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why
wilt thou
swallow up the inheritance of the
LORD?
I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel, but you are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why would you
swallow up the
LORD’s inheritance?”
Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the
LORD. And the
LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his
bloody house, because he
slew the Gibeonites.
During the reign of David there was a famine for three successive years, and David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, “It is because of the blood shed by Saul and his family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and
wherewith shall I make the
atonement, that ye may
bless the inheritance of the
LORD?
So David asked the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How can I make
amends so that you may
bless the inheritance of the
LORD?”
Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will
hang them up unto the
LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the
LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them.
let seven of his male descendants be delivered to us so that we may
hang them before the
LORD at Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of the
LORD.” “I will give them to you,” said the king.
But the king
spared Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the
LORD’S oath that was between them, between David and
Jonathan the son of Saul.
Now the king
spared Mephibosheth son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the
LORD between David and
Jonathan son of Saul.
And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they
hanged them in the hill before the
LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they
hanged them on the hill before the
LORD. So all seven of them fell together; they were put to death in the first days of the harvest, at the beginning of the barley harvest.
And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
And David
sang this song to the
LORD on the day the
LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.
I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
In my distress I called upon the
LORD, and
cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
In my distress I called upon the
LORD; I
cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears.
The
LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
The
LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.
And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the
rebuking of the
LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the
rebuke of the
LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
They prevented me in the day of my
calamity: but the
LORD was my stay.
The
LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he
recompensed me.
The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
Therefore the
LORD hath
recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight.
For thou art my lamp, O
LORD: and the
LORD will
lighten my darkness.
For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness.
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the
LORD is tried: he is a
buckler to all them that trust in him.
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the
LORD is
flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
They looked, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but He did not answer.
The
LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and
exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
The
LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be
exalted—
Therefore I will give
thanks unto thee, O
LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name.
The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; His word was on my tongue.
He arose, and
smote the Philistines until his hand was
weary, and his hand
clave unto the sword: and the
LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to
spoil.
but
Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines until his hand grew
weary and
stuck to his sword. The
LORD brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops returned to him, but only to
plunder the dead.
But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and
slew the Philistines: and the
LORD wrought a great victory.
But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the
LORD.
So the three mighty men broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the
LORD,
And he said, Be it far from me, O
LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in
jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.
saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is this not the blood of the men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And again the anger of the
LORD was
kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
Again the anger of the
LORD burned against Israel, and He
stirred up David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”
And
Joab said unto the king, Now the
LORD thy God add unto the people, how many
soever they be, an
hundredfold, and that the eyes of my
lord the king may see it: but why
doth my
lord the king delight in this thing?
But
Joab replied to the king, “May the
LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my
lord the king see it. But why does my
lord the king want to do such a thing?”
And David’s heart
smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the
LORD, I have
sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I
beseech thee, O
LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was
stricken and he said to the
LORD, “I have
sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O
LORD, I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
For when David was up in the morning, the word of the
LORD came unto the prophet
Gad, David’s
seer, saying,
When David got up in the morning, a revelation from the
LORD had come to
Gad the prophet, David’s
seer:
Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the
LORD; for his
mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the
LORD, for His
mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
So the
LORD sent a
pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba seventy thousand men.
So the
LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand of the people from
Dan to
Beersheba died.
And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the
LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the
LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.
But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the
LORD relented from the
calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the
LORD was by the
threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
And David spake unto the
LORD when he saw the angel that
smote the people, and said, Lo, I have
sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the
LORD, “Surely I, the
shepherd, have
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
And
Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the
LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.
And that day
Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the
LORD on the
threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”
And David, according to the saying of
Gad, went up as the
LORD commanded.
So David went up at the word of
Gad, just as the
LORD had commanded.
And Araunah said, Wherefore is my
lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To
buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the
LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
“Why has my
lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To
buy your
threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the
LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be
halted.”
And Araunah said unto David, Let my
lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
Araunah said to David, “My
lord the king may take whatever seems good and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the
threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.
O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” He also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”
And the king said unto Araunah,
Nay; but I will surely
buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the
LORD my God of that which
doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
“No,” replied the king, “I
insist on paying a price, for I will not offer to the
LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
And there he built an altar to the
LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the
LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was
halted.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my
lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her
cherish him, and let her lie in thy
bosom, that my
lord the king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
Wherefore
Nathan spake unto Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith
doth reign, and David our
lord knoweth it not?
Then
Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king, and our
lord David does not know it?
Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him,
Didst not thou, my
lord, O king,
swear unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then
doth Adonijah reign?
Go at once to King David and say, ‘My
lord the king, did you not
swear to your
maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’
And she said unto him, My
lord, thou swarest by the
LORD thy God unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
“My
lord,” she replied, “you
yourself swore to your
maidservant by the
LORD your God: ‘Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.’
And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
But now, behold, Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, did not know it.
