And there was
sore war against the
Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any
valiant man, he took him unto him.
And the war with the
Philistines was fierce for all the days of Saul. So whenever he noticed any strong or
brave man, Saul would
enlist him.
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in
array against the
Philistines.
Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah,
arraying themselves for battle against the
Philistines.
And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites stood on another, with the valley between them.
And there went out a
champion out of the camp of the
Philistines, named
Goliath, of
Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
For Israel and the
Philistines had put the battle in
array, army against army.
And Israel and the
Philistines arrayed in formation against each other.
And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the
champion, the
Philistine of
Gath,
Goliath by name, out of the armies of the
Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
And as he was speaking with them, suddenly the
champion named
Goliath, the
Philistine from
Gath, came forward from the
Philistines and
shouted his usual words, which David also heard.
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the
Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the
Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the
Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut off his head
therewith. And when the
Philistines saw their
champion was dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its
sheath and killed him; and he cut off his head with the sword. When the
Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and
shouted, and pursued the
Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of
Ekron. And the wounded of the
Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto
Gath, and unto
Ekron.
Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward with a
shout and pursued the
Philistines to the entrance of
Gath and to the gates of
Ekron. And the bodies of the
Philistines were
strewn along the Shaaraim road to
Gath and
Ekron.
And the children of Israel returned from
chasing after the
Philistines, and they
spoiled their tents.
When the Israelites returned from their pursuit of the
Philistines, they
plundered their camps.
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the
Philistines be upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the
Philistines be against him.”
And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a
snare to him, and that the hand of the
Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the
twain.
“I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a
snare to him, and the hand of the
Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.”
And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any
dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the
Philistines, to be
avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the
Philistines.
Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires no other
dowry but a hundred
Philistine foreskins as
revenge on his enemies.’” But Saul intended to cause David’s death at the hands of the
Philistines.
Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and
slew of the
Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as payment in full to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage.
Then the princes of the
Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the
Philistines, and
slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.
When war broke out again, David went out and fought the Philistines and struck them with such a mighty blow that they fled before him.
Then they told David, saying, Behold, the
Philistines fight against Keilah, and they
rob the threshingfloors.
Now it was reported to David, “Look, the
Philistines are fighting against Keilah and
looting the
threshing floors.”
Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and
smite these
Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and
smite the
Philistines, and save Keilah.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go and attack these Philistines?” And the LORD said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”
And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
But David’s men said to him, “Look, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”
Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
Once again, David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him: “Go at once to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the
Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and
smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
Then David and his men went to Keilah, fought against the
Philistines, and carried off their
livestock, striking them with a mighty blow. So David saved the people of Keilah.
But there came a
messenger unto Saul, saying,
Haste thee, and come; for the
Philistines have invaded the land.
Then a
messenger came to Saul, saying, “Come quickly, for the
Philistines have
raided the land!”
Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place is called Sela-hammahlekoth.
And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
After Saul had returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the
Philistines; and Saul shall
despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
David, however, said to himself, “One of these days now I will be swept away by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop searching for me all over Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
And the time that David lived in
Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.
And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring
tidings to
Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the
Philistines.
David did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to
Gath, for he said, “Otherwise they will report us, saying, ‘This is what David did.’” And this was David’s custom the whole time he lived in
Philistine territory.
And it came to pass in those days, that the
Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou
assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.
Now in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for warfare against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men are to go out to battle with me.”
And the
Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in
Gilboa.
The
Philistines came together and camped at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and camped at
Gilboa.
And when Saul saw the host of the
Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly
trembled.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am
sore distressed; for the
Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the
Philistines: and to
morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the
Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the
Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. And the LORD will deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the
Philistines.”
Now the
Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in
Jezreel.
Now the
Philistines brought all their forces together at Aphek, while Israel camped by the spring in
Jezreel.
And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.
As the
Philistine leaders marched out their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men marched behind them with Achish.
Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?
Then the commanders of the
Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish replied, “Is this not David, the servant of King Saul of Israel? He has been with me all these days, even years, and from the day he defected until
today I have found no fault in him.”
And the princes of the
Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the
Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the
Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.
Therefore turn back now and go in peace, so that you will not do anything to displease the leaders of the Philistines.”
And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’
So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the
Philistines. And the
Philistines went up to
Jezreel.
So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the
Philistines. And the
Philistines went up to
Jezreel.
And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great
spoil that they had taken out of the land of the
Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.
So he led David down, and there were the
Amalekites spread out over all the land, eating, drinking, and
celebrating the great amount of
plunder they had taken from the land of the
Philistines and the land of Judah.
Now the
Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the
Philistines, and fell down slain in mount
Gilboa.
Now the
Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount
Gilboa.
And the
Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the
Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchi-shua, Saul’s sons.
The
Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed Saul’s sons
Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they
forsook the cities, and fled; and the
Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, when the
Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount
Gilboa.
The next day, when the
Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
And they cut off his head, and
stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the
Philistines round about, to
publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
They cut off Saul’s head,
stripped off his
armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the
Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
And when the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead heard of that which the
Philistines had done to Saul;
When the people of
Jabesh-
gilead heard what the
Philistines had done to Saul,
And David sent messengers to
Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I
espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the
Philistines.
Then David sent messengers to say to
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, “Give me back my wife, Michal, whom I
betrothed to myself for a hundred
Philistine foreskins.”
Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.
Now take action, because the LORD has said to David, ‘Through My servant David I will save My people Israel from the hands of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’”
But when the
Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the
Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
When the
Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went down to the
stronghold.
The
Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of
Rephaim.
Now the
Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the
Philistines?
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the
Philistines into thine hand.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And David came to
Baal-perazim, and David
smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David went to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the
Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, the LORD has
burst out against my enemies before me.” So he called that place
Baal-perazim.
And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.
There the Philistines abandoned their idols, and David and his men carried them away.
And the
Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of
Rephaim.
Once again the
Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt
bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to
smite the host of the
Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that the LORD has marched out before you to strike the camp of the
Philistines.”
And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and
smote the
Philistines from Geba until thou come to
Gazer.
So David did as the LORD had commanded him, and he struck down the
Philistines all the way from
Gibeon to
Gezer.
And after this it came to pass, that David
smote the
Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the
Philistines.
Some time later, David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Metheg-ammah from the hand of the Philistines.
Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of
Ammon, and of the
Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the
spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
And all the people were at
strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the
Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for
Absalom.
And all the people throughout the tribes of Israel were
arguing, “The king
rescued us from the hand of our enemies and delivered us from the hand of the
Philistines, but now he has fled the land because of
Absalom.
And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of
Jonathan his son from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, which had
stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the
Philistines had
hanged them, when the
Philistines had slain Saul in
Gilboa:
he went and took the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, who had
stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the
Philistines had hung the bodies after they had struck down Saul at
Gilboa.
Moreover the
Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the
Philistines: and David waxed
faint.
Once again the
Philistines waged war against Israel, and David and his servants went down and fought against the
Philistines; but David became exhausted.
And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the
Philistines at
Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite
slew Saph, which was of the sons of the
giant.
Some time later at
Gob, there was another battle with the
Philistines. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.
And there was again a battle in
Gob with the
Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a
Bethlehemite,
slew the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
Once again there was a battle with the
Philistines at
Gob, and Elhanan son of
Jair the
Bethlehemite killed the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
And after him was
Eleazar the son of
Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they
defied the
Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:
Next in command was
Eleazar son of
Dodo the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he went with David to
taunt the
Philistines who had gathered for battle at
Pas-dammim. The men of Israel retreated,
He arose, and
smote the
Philistines until his hand was
weary, and his hand
clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to
spoil.
but
Eleazar stood his ground and struck the
Philistines until his hand grew
weary and
stuck to his sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops returned to him, but only to
plunder the dead.
And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the
Philistines were gathered together into a
troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the
Philistines.
And after him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines had banded together near a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them.
But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and
slew the
Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.
But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.
And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of
Adullam: and the
troop of the
Philistines pitched in the valley of
Rephaim.
At harvest time, three of the thirty chief men went down to David at the cave of
Adullam, while a company of
Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the
Philistines was then in
Bethlehem.
At that time David was in the
stronghold, and the garrison of the
Philistines was at
Bethlehem.
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the
Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
So the three mighty men broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
In the twenty and seventh year of
Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. And the people were
encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the
Philistines.
In the twenty-seventh year of
Asa’s reign over Judah, Zimri reigned in Tirzah for seven days. Now the troops were
encamped against Gibbethon of the
Philistines,
And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and
sojourned in the land of the
Philistines seven years.
So the woman had proceeded to do as the man of God had
instructed. And she and her household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the
Philistines.
And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.
At the end of seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to the king to appeal for her house and her land.
He
smote the
Philistines, even unto
Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the
watchmen to the
fenced city.
He defeated the
Philistines as far as
Gaza and its borders, from
watchtower to fortified city.
And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (of whom came the Philistines,) and Caphthorim.
the Pathrusites, the Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came), and the Caphtorites.
Now the
Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the
Philistines, and fell down slain in mount
Gilboa.
Now the
Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount
Gilboa.
And the
Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the
Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.
The
Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed Saul’s sons
Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they
forsook their cities, and fled: and the
Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, when the
Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount
Gilboa.
The next day, when the
Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
And when they had
stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the
Philistines round about, to carry
tidings unto their idols, and to the people.
They
stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his
armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the
Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people.
And when all
Jabesh-
gilead heard all that the
Philistines had done to Saul,
When the people of
Jabesh-
gilead heard about everything the
Philistines had done to Saul,
He was with David at
Pas-dammim, and there the
Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a
parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the
Philistines.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim when the
Philistines gathered there for battle. At the place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the
Philistines.
And they set themselves in the midst of that
parcel, and delivered it, and
slew the
Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great
deliverance.
But
Eleazar and David stationed themselves in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the
Philistines, and the LORD brought about a great victory.
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of
Adullam; and the host of the
Philistines encamped in the valley of
Rephaim.
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of
Adullam, while a company of
Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And David was then in the hold, and the
Philistines’ garrison was then at
Bethlehem.
At that time David was in the
stronghold, and the garrison of the
Philistines was at
Bethlehem.
And the three
brake through the host of the
Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
So the Three broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the
Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the
Philistines upon
advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the
Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the
Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
And when the
Philistines heard that David was
anointed king over all Israel, all the
Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.
When the
Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went out to face them.
And the
Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of
Rephaim.
And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the
Philistines? and
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”
So they came up to
Baal-perazim; and David
smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David and his men went up to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the
Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, God has
burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place
Baal-perazim.
And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.
There the Philistines abandoned their gods, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire.
And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.
Once again the
Philistines raided the valley.
And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to
smite the host of the
Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move out to battle, because this will mean that God has marched out before you to strike the camp of the
Philistines.”
David therefore did as God commanded him: and they
smote the host of the
Philistines from
Gibeon even to
Gazer.
So David did as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the
Philistines all the way from
Gibeon to
Gezer.
