Then said
Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
“If not,” said
Absalom, “
please let my brother Amnon go with us.” “Why should he go with you?” the king asked.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “
Please pretend to be a
mourner; put on clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has
mourned for the dead a long time.
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“
Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
Then the woman said, Let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak a word to my lord the king?” “Speak,” he replied.
And it came to pass after forty years, that
Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my
vow, which I have
vowed unto the LORD, in
Hebron.
After four years had passed,
Absalom said to the king, “
Please let me go to
Hebron to
fulfill a
vow I have made to the LORD.
And the saying
pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
This proposal seemed good to
Absalom and all the elders of Israel.
But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we
flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people
pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to
flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
Then
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok said, “
Please let me run and tell the king the good news that the LORD has
avenged him of his enemies.”
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok, however,
persisted and said to
Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen,
please let me also run behind the
Cushite!” “My son,”
Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had
pleased thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have
pleased you!
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
Then
cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto
Joab, Come near
hither, that I may speak with thee.
a wise woman called out from the city, “
Listen!
Listen!
Please tell
Joab to come here so that I may speak with him.”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his
mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed.
Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that
smote the people, and said, Lo, I have
sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the
shepherd, have
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done?
Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
Now
please, come and let me
advise you. Save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.
And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “
Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had made this request.
And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
One woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house.
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her
bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise
slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she
yearned with
compassion for her son. “
Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living
baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be
verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.
And now, O God of Israel,
please confirm what You promised to Your servant, my father David.
Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his
supplication, O LORD my God, to
hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day:
Yet regard the prayer and
plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You
today.
And
hearken thou to the
supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest,
forgive.
Hear the
plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and
forgive.
When thy people Israel be
smitten down before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and
confess thy name, and pray, and make
supplication unto thee in this house:
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading with You in this temple,
Then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their
supplication, and maintain their cause.
then may You hear from heaven their prayer and their
plea, and may You
uphold their cause.
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
That thine eyes may be open unto the
supplication of thy servant, and unto the
supplication of thy people Israel, to
hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.
May Your eyes be open to the
pleas of Your servant and of Your people Israel, and may You
listen to them whenever they call to You.
And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all Solomon’s desire which he was pleased to do,
Now when Solomon had finished building the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and had achieved all that he had desired to do,
And
Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they
pleased him not.
So
Hiram went out from Tyre to
inspect the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not
pleased with them.
Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing:
howbeit let me go in any wise.
But Pharaoh asked him, “What have you lacked here with me that you suddenly want to go back to your own country?” “Nothing,”
Hadad replied, “but
please let me go.”
So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said,
Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
So
Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks.
Elijah called to her and said, “
Please bring me a little water in a cup, so that I may drink.”
And as she was going to
fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a
morsel of bread in thine hand.
And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread.”
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God,
please let this boy’s life return to him!”
And he left the oxen, and ran after
Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee,
kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
So
Elisha left the oxen, ran after
Elijah, and said, “
Please let me
kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” “Go on back,”
Elijah replied, “for what have I done to you?”
Yet I will send my servants unto thee to
morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that
whatsoever is
pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
But about this time
tomorrow I will send my servants to search your palace and the houses of your servants. They will seize and carry away all that is precious to you.’”
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please take note and see that this man is looking for trouble, for when he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, I did not deny him.”
So they
girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-
hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
So with
sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-
hadad says, ‘
Please spare my life.’” And the king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to
smite him.
Meanwhile, by the word of the LORD, one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me, please!” But the man refused to strike him.
Then he found another man, and said,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the man
smote him, so that in
smiting he wounded him.
Then the prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please!” So the man struck him and wounded him,
And he said unto her, Because I spake unto
Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy
vineyard for money; or else, if it
please thee, I will give thee another
vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my
vineyard.
Ahab answered, “Because I spoke to
Naboth the Jezreelite and told him, ‘Give me your
vineyard for silver, or if you wish, I will give you another
vineyard in its place.’ And he replied, ‘I will not give you my
vineyard!’”
And
Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel,
Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day.
But
Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “
Please inquire first for the word of the LORD.”
And the
messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold now, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So
please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
begged him, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants
please be precious in your sight.
And
Elijah said unto
Elisha,
Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Bethel. And
Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to
Bethel.
and
Elijah said to
Elisha, “
Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Bethel.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to
Bethel.
And
Elijah said unto him,
Elisha,
tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to
Jericho.
And
Elijah said to
Elisha, “
Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Jericho.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went to
Jericho.
And
Elijah said unto him,
Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
And
Elijah said to
Elisha, “
Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And
Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” “
Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest
peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
“Look now,” they said to
Elisha, “we your servants have fifty
valiant men.
Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,”
Elisha replied.
And the men of the city said unto
Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is
pleasant, as my lord
seeth: but the water is
naught, and the ground barren.
Then the men of the city said to
Elisha, “
Please note, our lord, that the city’s
location is good, as you can see. But the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.”
Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a
stool, and a
candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
Please let us make a small room
upstairs and put in it a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp for him. Then when he comes to us, he can stay there.”
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.
And the woman called her husband and said, “
Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of God and return.”
Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.
Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’” And she answered, “Everything is all right.”
And it was so, when
Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you
torn your clothes?
Please let the man come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
Then
Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God, stood before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So
please accept a gift from your servant.”
And
Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules’ burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD.
“If you will not,” said
Naaman, “
please let me, your servant, be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry. For your servant will never again make a burnt offering or a sacrifice to any other god but the LORD.
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
And
Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.
But
Naaman insisted, “
Please, take two talents.” And he urged Gehazi to accept them. Then he
tied up two talents of silver in two bags along with two sets of clothing and gave them to two of his servants, who carried them
ahead of Gehazi.
And the sons of the prophets said unto
Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.
Now the sons of the prophets said to
Elisha, “
Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.
Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.
Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” “Go,” said
Elisha.
And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.
Then one of them said, “Please come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.
And
Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and
chariots of fire round about
Elisha.
Then
Elisha prayed, “O LORD,
please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and
chariots of fire all around
Elisha.
And when they came down to him,
Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said,
Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he
smote them with blindness according to the word of
Elisha.
As the Arameans came down against him,
Elisha prayed to the LORD, “
Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of
Elisha.
And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.
But one of his servants replied, “
Please, have scouts take five of the horses that remain in the city. Their
plight will be no worse than all the Israelites who are left here. You can see that all the Israelites here are
doomed. So let us send them and find out.”
And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that
Elisha hath done.
Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “
Please relate to me all the great things
Elisha has done.”
Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto
Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, along with Shebnah and Joah, said to the
Rabshakeh, “
Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak with us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
Now therefore, O LORD our God, I
beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.
And now, O LORD our God, please save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
I
beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
“
Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Now therefore let it
please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
So now You have been
pleased to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed
forever.”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his
mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed.
Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God,
please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague remain upon Your people.”
Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:
Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all my father’s house to be king over Israel
forever. For He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah He chose my father’s household, and from my father’s sons He was
pleased to make me king over all Israel.
I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.
I know, my God, that You test the heart and delight in uprightness. All these things I have given willingly and with an upright heart, and now I have seen Your people who are present here giving
joyfully and willingly to You.
Now then, O LORD God of Israel, let thy word be
verified, which thou hast spoken unto thy servant David.
And now, O LORD, God of Israel,
please confirm what You promised to Your servant David.
Have respect therefore to the prayer of thy servant, and to his
supplication, O LORD my God, to
hearken unto the cry and the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee:
Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You.
Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear thou from thy dwelling place, even from heaven; and when thou hearest,
forgive.
Hear the
plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and
forgive.
And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee; and shall return and
confess thy name, and pray and make
supplication before thee in this house;
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading before You in this temple,
Then hear thou from the heavens their prayer and their
supplication, and maintain their cause.
then may You hear from heaven their prayer and their
plea, and may You
uphold their cause.
Yet if they
bethink themselves in the land
whither they are carried
captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have
sinned, we have done
amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and
please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants
forever.”
And
Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel,
Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day.
But
Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “
Please inquire first for the word of the LORD.”
And the
messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him, saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So
please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation.
This proposal pleased the king and the whole assembly.
And
Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself
treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of
pleasant jewels;
Hezekiah had very great riches and honor, and he made
treasuries for his silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and all kinds of valuable articles.
And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his
supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.
And when he prayed to Him, the LORD received his
plea and heard his petition; so He brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD is God.
His prayer also, and how God was intreated of him, and all his sin, and his
trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and
graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.
His prayer and how God received his plea, as well as all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself, they are indeed written in the Records of the Seers.
Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s
treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his
pleasure to us concerning this matter.
Now, therefore, if it
pleases the king, let a search be made of the royal
archives in Babylon to see if King Cyrus did indeed issue a decree to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.
Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his
pleasure: and separate
yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
Now, therefore, make a confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate
yourselves from the people of the land and from your foreign wives.”
And I said unto the king, If it
please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’
sepulchres, that I may build it.
and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city where my fathers are buried, so that I may rebuild it.”
And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when
wilt thou return? So it
pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Then the king, with the queen seated beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time.
Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may letters be given to me for the governors west of the Euphrates, so that they will grant me safe passage until I reach Judah.
I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this
usury.
I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been
lending the people money and grain.
Please, let us stop this
usury.
Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the
hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
Please restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the percentage of the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you have been
assessing them.”
And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our
livestock as they
please. We are in great distress.
And the drinking was according to the law; none did
compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man’s
pleasure.
By order of the king, no limit was placed on the drinking, and every official of his household was to serve each man whatever he desired.
If it
please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it
pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a woman better than she.
And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
The king and his princes were
pleased with this counsel; so the king did as Memucan had
advised.
And let the
maiden which
pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing
pleased the king; and he did so.
Then let the young woman who pleases the king become queen in place of Vashti.” This suggestion pleased the king, and he acted accordingly.
And the
maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for
purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
And the young woman
pleased him and obtained his favor, so he quickly provided her with beauty treatments and the special diet. He assigned to her seven select maidservants from the palace and transferred her with them to the best place in the
harem.
If it
please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s
treasuries.
If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will deposit ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury to pay those who carry it out.”
And the king said unto
Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.
“Keep your money,” said the king to
Haman. “These people are given to you to do with them as you
please.”
