refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son
mourning. Thus his father
wept for him.
All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he
refused to be comforted. “No,” he said. “I will go down to
Sheol mourning for my son.” So his father
wept for him.
But he
refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master
wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
But he
refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not
concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he
hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
But his father refused. “I know, my son, I know!” he said. “He too shall become a people, and he too shall be great; nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.”
And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will
slay thy son, even thy
firstborn.
and I told you to let My son go so that he may worship Me. But since you have
refused to let him go, behold, I will kill your
firstborn son!’”
And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD
slew all the
firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the
firstborn of man, and the
firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the
matrix, being males; but all the
firstborn of my children I
redeem.
And when Pharaoh
stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every
firstborn in the land of Egypt, both of man and beast. This is why I sacrifice to the LORD the
firstborn male of every
womb, but I
redeem all the
firstborn of my sons.’

Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of
Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not
hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can put them to death and
purge Israel of this evil.” But the Benjamites
refused to
heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.

listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We must have a king over us.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his
stature; because I have
refused him: for the LORD
seeth not as man
seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”
But he
refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he
hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.
Saul
refused, saying, “I will not eat.” But his servants joined the woman in
urging him, and he
heeded their voice. He got up from the ground and sat on the bed.
Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and
abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come and run me through and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and
refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
Howbeit he
refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
Then she brought the pan and set it down before him, but he
refused to eat. “Send
everyone away!” said Amnon. And
everyone went out.
Howbeit he would not
hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.
But Amnon
refused to
listen to her, and being stronger, he
violated her and lay with her.
And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou
didst unto me. But he would not
hearken unto her.
“No,” she replied, “sending me away is worse than this great wrong you have already done to me!” But he
refused to
listen to her.

Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.

Absalom sent a second time, but
Joab still would not come.
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
So the three mighty men broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he
refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in
jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.
saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is this not the blood of the men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
So when all Israel saw that the king
hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of
Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king had
refused to
listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of

And
Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because
Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and
refused to eat.
And it came to pass, when
Jezebel heard that
Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that
Jezebel said to
Ahab, Arise, take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, which he
refused to give thee for money: for
Naboth is not alive, but dead.
When
Jezebel heard that
Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to
Ahab, “Get up and take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, who
refused to give it to you for silver. For
Naboth is no longer alive, but dead.”
But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.
But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will not accept it.” And although
Naaman urged him to accept it, he
refused.
And the LORD was with him; and he
prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
And the LORD was with
Hezekiah, and he
prospered wherever he went. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and
refused to serve him.

So the Three broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he
refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And when all Israel saw that the king would not
hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of

And
refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou
didst among them; but
hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their
bondage: but thou art a God ready to
pardon,
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.
They
refused to
listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They
stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return them to their
bondage in Egypt. But You are a
forgiving God,
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion, and You did not
forsake them.
But the queen Vashti
refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very
wroth, and his anger burned in him.
Queen Vashti, however,
refused to come at the king’s command brought by his eunuchs. And the king became
furious, and his anger burned within him.
What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king
Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
“According to law,” he asked, “what should be done with Queen Vashti, since she
refused to obey the command of King
Xerxes delivered by the eunuchs?”
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them; they are
loathsome food to me.
But now they that are younger than I have me in
derision, whose fathers I would have
disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.
“But now they
mock me, men younger than I am, whose fathers I would have
refused to
entrust with my sheep dogs.
In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my
sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul
refused to be comforted.
In the day of trouble I sought the Lord; through the night my outstretched hands did not grow
weary; my soul
refused to be comforted.

He rejected the tent of Joseph and refused the tribe of Ephraim.
As he loved
cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.
The
cursing that he loved, may it fall on him; the blessing in which he
refused to delight, may it be far from him.
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
Because you refused my call, and no one took my outstretched hand,
And
whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I
withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart
rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
Anything my eyes desired, I did not deny myself. I refused my heart no pleasure. For my heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
who turned the world into a desert and destroyed its cities, who
refused to let the
captives return to their homes?”
For the LORD hath called thee as a woman
forsaken and
grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou
wast refused, saith thy God.
For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, like the rejected wife of one’s youth,” says your God.
O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast
stricken them, but they have not
grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have
refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have
refused to return.
O LORD, do not Your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they
refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than stone and
refused to
repent.
They are turned back to the
iniquities of their forefathers, which
refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
They have returned to the sins of their forefathers who refused to obey My words. They have followed other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their fathers.
Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in
Ramah,
lamentation, and bitter
weeping;
Rahel weeping for her children
refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in
Ramah,
mourning and great
weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did
hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.
But he and his officers and the people of the land refused to obey the words that the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were
oppressed together: and all that took them
captives held them fast; they
refused to let them go.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “The sons of Israel are
oppressed, and the sons of Judah as well. All their captors hold them fast, refusing to release them.
And she hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them.
But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes worse than the countries around her. For her people have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes.’
But they rebelled against me, and would not
hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they
forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my
fury upon them to
accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.
But they rebelled against Me and
refused to
listen. None of them cast away the abominations before their eyes, and they did not
forsake the idols of Egypt. So I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and
vent My anger against them in the land of Egypt.
There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon,
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
But there are some Jews you have appointed to
manage the province of Babylon—
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego—who have
ignored you, O king, and have
refused to serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”
He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria because they
refused to
repent?
But they
refused to
hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.
But they
refused to pay attention and turned a
stubborn shoulder; they stopped up their ears from hearing.

But he refused. Instead, he went and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay his debt.

bidden to the
wedding: and they would not come.

banquet, but they
refused to come.

vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.

But the people there
refused to
welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem.
And he was
angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
The older son became
angry and
refused to go in. So his father came out and
pleaded with him.
And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
For a while he refused, but later he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect men,
This Moses whom they
refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the
bush.
This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ is the one whom God sent to be their ruler and
redeemer through the angel who appeared to him in the
bush.
To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
But when
divers were
hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one
Tyrannus.
And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
Some of them were
convinced by what he said, but others
refused to believe.
And with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
and with every wicked
deception directed against those who are perishing, because they
refused the love of the truth that would have saved them.
For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be
refused, if it be received with
thanksgiving:
For every creation of God is good, and nothing that is received with
thanksgiving should be rejected,
By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
By faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were
tortured, not accepting
deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were
tortured and
refused their release, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if the people did not escape when they
refused Him who
warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we
reject Him who warns us from heaven?
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
The second beast was permitted to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship it to be killed.
Many therefore have
refused to
lend for other men’s ill dealing, fearing to be
defrauded.
