Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
“If You are the Christ, tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe.
Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.”
And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared. “We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.”
And
Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and
said, Thou sayest it.
So
Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have
said so,” Jesus replied.
Then
said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
Then
Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”
Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things
whereof ye
accuse him:
and
said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was
inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.
And he
said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore
chastise him, and let him go.
A third time he
said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no
offense worthy of death. So after I
punish Him, I will release Him.”
But Jesus turning unto them
said, Daughters of Jerusalem,
weep not for me, but
weep for
yourselves, and for your children.
But Jesus turned to them and
said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not
weep for Me, but
weep for
yourselves and for your children.
Then
said Jesus, Father,
forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his
raiment, and cast lots.
Then Jesus
said, “Father,
forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.
And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save
thyself.
“If You are the King of the Jews,” they
said, “save
Yourself!”
And one of the malefactors which were

thyself and us.

said. “Save
Yourself and us!”

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

paradise.

today you will be with Me in
Paradise.”
And when Jesus had
cried with a loud voice, he
said, Father, into thy hands I
commend my spirit: and having
said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
And he
said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are
sad?
He asked them, “What are you
discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with
sadness on their faces.
And the one of them, whose name was
Cleopas, answering
said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
One of them, named
Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only
visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”
And he
said unto them, What things? And they
said unto him, Concerning Jesus of
Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
“What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of
Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people.
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive.
And certain of them which were with us went to the
sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had
said: but him they saw not.
Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.”
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Then Jesus
said to them, “O
foolish ones, how slow are your hearts to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
“Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and
amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
John bare witness of him, and
cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
John
testified concerning Him. He
cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I
said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”
And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
“Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you
Elijah?” He
said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
Then
said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of
thyself?
So they
said to him, “Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about
yourself?”
He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet: “I am a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
asked him, “Why then do you
baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor
Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
The next day John
seeth Jesus coming unto him, and
saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’
And I knew him not: but he that sent me to
baptize with water, the same
said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to
baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will
baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and
saith unto them, What seek ye? They
said unto him,
Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They
said to Him, “
Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”
He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
“Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour.
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and
saith unto him, We have found the
Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the
Messiah” (which is translated as Christ).
And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus
beheld him, he
said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called
Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and
said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called
Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).
The day following Jesus would go forth into
Galilee, and findeth Philip, and
saith unto him, Follow me.
The next day Jesus decided to set out for
Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.”
Philip findeth
Nathanael, and
saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
Philip found
Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law, the One the prophets
foretold—Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
And
Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of
Nazareth? Philip
saith unto him, Come and see.
“Can anything good come from
Nazareth?”
Nathanael asked. “Come and see,”
said Philip.
Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and
said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou
wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
“How do You know me?”
Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
Nathanael answered and
saith unto him,
Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
“
Rabbi,”
Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”
And he
saith unto him,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you,
Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.”
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
“Woman, why does this
concern us?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
His mother
saith unto the servants,
Whatsoever he
saith unto you, do it.
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
Jesus
saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the
brim.
Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the
brim.
And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
“Now draw some out,” He
said, “and take it to the master of the
banquet.” They did so,
And
saith unto him, Every man at the beginning
doth set forth good wine; and when men have well
drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
and
said, “
Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the
cheap wine after the guests are
drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now!”
And
said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of
merchandise.
To those selling doves He
said, “Get these out of here! How
dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!”
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?”
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.”
Then
said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and
wilt thou rear it up in three days?
“This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?”
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
The same came to Jesus by night, and
said unto him,
Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
He came to Jesus at night and
said, “
Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.”
Jesus answered and
said unto him,
Verily,
verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s
womb, and be born?
“How can a man be born when he is old?”
Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s
womb a second time to be born?”
Marvel not that I
said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Do not be
amazed that I
said, ‘You must be born again.’
Nicodemus answered and
said unto him, How can these things be?
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and you do not understand these things?
And they came unto John, and
said unto him,
Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
So John’s disciples came to him and
said, “Look,
Rabbi, the One who was with you beyond the Jordan, the One you
testified about—He is
baptizing, and
everyone is going to Him.”
John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.
Ye
yourselves bear me witness, that I
said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
When a
Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus
said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
Then
saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a
Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the
Samaritans.
“You are a
Jew,”
said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a
Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with
Samaritans.)
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
“Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
Jesus answered and
said unto her,
Whosoever drinketh of this water shall
thirst again:
The woman
saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I
thirst not, neither come
hither to draw.
The woman
said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get
thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Jesus
saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come
hither.
Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
“I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
“Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
“Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
The woman
saith unto him, I know that
Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
The woman
said, “I know that
Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
And upon this came his disciples, and
marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man
said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
The woman then left her
waterpot, and went her way into the city, and
saith to the men,
Then the woman left her water
jar, went back into the town, and
said to the people,
But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
They
said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the
Savior of the world.”
Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
The
nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down
ere my child die.
“Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.
Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to
amend. And they
said unto him,
Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him
yesterday at the seventh hour.”
So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he
saith unto him,
Wilt thou be made whole?
When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
Then Jesus told him, “Get up,
pick up your mat, and walk.”
The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
so the Jews
said to the man who had been
healed, “This is the Sabbath! It is unlawful for you to carry your mat.”
He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘
Pick up your mat and walk.’”
Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
“Who is this man who told you to
pick it up and walk?” they asked.
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and
said to him, “See, you have been made well. Stop
sinning, or something worse may happen to you.”
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
