Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to
morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also
shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. And the LORD will deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’
And David enquired at the LORD, saying,
Shall I pursue after this
troop?
shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou
shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
and David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” the LORD replied, “for you will surely overtake them and
rescue the
captives.”
Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
For who will
hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so
shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they
shall part alike.
Who will
listen to your proposal? The share of the one who went to battle will
match the share of the one who stayed with the supplies. They will share alike.”
And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying,
Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said,
Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto
Hebron.
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” “Go up,” the LORD answered. Then David asked, “Where should I go?” “To
Hebron,” replied the LORD.
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said,
Shall the sword
devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long
shall it be then,
ere thou
bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
And
Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand
shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
Then
Abner sent messengers in his place to say to David, “To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant with me, and surely my hand will be with you to bring all Israel over to you.”
And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
And I am this day weak, though
anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD
shall reward the
doer of evil according to his wickedness.
And I am weak this day, though
anointed as king, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me. May the LORD repay the
evildoer according to his evil!”
How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?
How much more, when wicked men kill a righteous man in his own house and on his own bed, shall I not now require his blood from your hands and remove you from the earth!”
Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou
shalt feed my people Israel, and thou
shalt be a captain over Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the
lame, thou
shalt not come in
hither: thinking, David cannot come in
hither.
Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and
lame can
repel you.” For they thought, “David cannot get in here.”
And David said on that day,
Whosoever getteth up to the
gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the
lame and the blind, that are
hated of David’s soul, he
shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the
lame shall not come into the house.
On that day he said, “
Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the water shaft to reach the
lame and blind who are
despised by David.” That is why it is said, “The blind and the
lame will never enter the palace.”
And David enquired of the LORD, saying,
Shall I go up to the Philistines?
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou
shalt not go up; but
fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the
mulberry trees.
So David inquired of the LORD, who answered, “Do not march straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou
shalt bestir thyself: for then
shall the LORD go out before thee, to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that the LORD has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me?
That day David feared the LORD and asked, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?”
And I will yet be more
vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them
shall I be had in honour.
and I will
humiliate and humble myself even more than this. Yet I will be honored by the maidservants of whom you have spoken.”
Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
“Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build for Me a house to dwell in?
Now therefore so
shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
Moreover I will
appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither
shall the children of wickedness
afflict them any more, as
beforetime,
And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the sons of wickedness
oppress them as they did at the beginning
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou
shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which
shall proceed out of thy
bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He
shall build an house for my name, and I will
stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom
forever.
I will be his father, and he
shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will
chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
But My loving devotion will never be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I moved out of your way.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely
shew thee kindness for
Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou
shalt eat bread at my table continually.
“Do not be afraid,” said David, “for surely I will show you kindness for the sake of your father
Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your
grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants,
shall till the land for him, and thou
shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s son
shall eat bread
alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
You and your sons and servants are to work the ground for him and bring in the harvest, so that your master’s grandson may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king’s sons.
And Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do all that my lord the king has commanded.” So Mephibosheth
ate at David’s table like one of the king’s own sons.
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou
shalt help me: but if the children of
Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,” said
Joab, “then you will come to my
rescue. And if the
Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your
rescue.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields;
shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus
shalt thou say unto
Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and
encourage thou him.
And David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing
shall surely die:
David burned with anger against the man and said to
Nathan: “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
And he
shall restore the lamb
fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no
pity.
Because he has done this thing and has shown no
pity, he must pay for the lamb four times over.”
Now therefore the sword
shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast
despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you have
despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad
daylight.
And David said unto
Nathan, I have
sinned against the LORD. And
Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou
shalt not die.
Then David said to
Nathan, “I have
sinned against the LORD.” “The LORD has taken away your sin,”
Nathan replied. “You will not die.
Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to
blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee
shall surely die.
Nevertheless, because by this deed you have shown utter contempt for the word of the LORD, the son born to you will surely die.”
But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
And I,
whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou
shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not
withhold me from thee.
Where could I ever take my shame? And you would be like one of the fools in Israel! Please speak to the king, for he will not
withhold me from you.”
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they
shall quench my coal which is left, and
shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And the king said,
Whosoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he
shall not touch thee any more.
“If
anyone speaks to you,” said the king, “bring him to me, and he will not trouble you again!”
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
Then thine
handmaid said, The word of my lord the king
shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to
discern good and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee.
And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king bring me rest, for my lord the king is able to
discern good and evil, just like the angel of God. May the LORD your God be with you.’”
Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not
conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.
For thy servant
vowed a
vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD
shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.
For your servant made a
vow while dwelling in Geshur of
Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in
Hebron.’”
Then
Absalom sent
spies throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘
Absalom reigns in
Hebron!’”
And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us
flee; for we
shall not else escape from
Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and
smite the city with the edge of the sword.
And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us
flee, or we will not escape from
Absalom! We must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us,
heap disaster on us, and put the city to the sword.”
And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do
whatsoever my lord the king
shall appoint.
The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king decides, we are your servants.”
And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
And the king said unto
Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I
shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and
shew me both it, and his
habitation:
Then the king said to
Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, He will bring me back and let me see both it and His dwelling place again.
Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.
And hast thou not there with thee
Zadok and
Abiathar the priests? therefore it
shall be, that what thing
soever thou
shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou
shalt tell it to
Zadok and
Abiathar the priests.
Will not
Zadok and
Abiathar the priests be there with you? Report to them everything you hear from the king’s palace.
Behold, they have there with them their two sons,
Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and
Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them ye
shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
And the king said, And where is thy master’s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said,
Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.
“Where is your master’s grandson?” asked the king. And Ziba answered, “Indeed, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he has said, ‘
Today, the house of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my
grandfather.’”
And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him
curse, because the LORD hath said unto him,
Curse David. Who
shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?
But the king replied, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses me because the LORD told him, ‘
Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why did you do this?’”
And
Ahithophel said unto
Absalom, Go in unto thy father’s concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel
shall hear that thou art
abhorred of thy father: then
shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong.
Ahithophel replied, “Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the palace. When all Israel hears that you have become a
stench to your father, then the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”
And I will come upon him while he is
weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him
shall flee; and I will
smite the king only:
I will attack him while he is weak and
weary; I will throw him into a
panic, and all the people with him will
flee; I will strike down only the king
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
and bring all the people back to you as a
bride returning to her husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.”
And when Hushai was come to
Absalom,
Absalom spake unto him, saying,
Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner:
shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.
So Hushai came to
Absalom, who told him, “
Ahithophel has spoken this proposal. Should we carry it out? If not, what do you say?”
And he also that is
valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion,
shall utterly
melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are
valiant men.
Then even the most
valiant soldier with the heart of a lion will
melt with fear, because all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man who has
valiant men with him.
So
shall we come upon him in some place where he
shall be found, and we will light upon him as the
dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there
shall not be left so much as one.
Then we will attack David wherever we find him, and we will descend on him like
dew on the ground. And of all the men with him, not even one will remain.
Moreover, if he be
gotten into a city, then
shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.
If he retreats to a city, all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will
drag it down to the valley until not even a
pebble can be found.”
But the people answered, Thou
shalt not go forth: for if we
flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people
pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to
flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
And
Joab said unto him, Thou
shalt not bear
tidings this day, but thou
shalt bear
tidings another day: but this day thou
shalt bear no
tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
But
Joab replied, “You are not the man to take good news
today. You may do it another day, but you must not do so
today, because the king’s son is dead.”
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said,
Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he
cursed the LORD’S
anointed?
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he
cursed the LORD’s
anointed?”
And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be
adversaries unto me?
shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?
And David replied, “Sons of Zeruiah, what have I to do with you, that you should be my
adversaries today? Should any man be put to death in Israel
today? Am I not indeed aware that
today I am king over Israel?”
Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou
shalt not die. And the king
sware unto him.
So the king said to Shimei, “You
shall not die.” And the king
swore an oath to him.
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And the king answered, Chimham
shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which
shall seem good unto thee: and
whatsoever thou
shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good in your sight, and I will do for you whatever you desire of me.”
And David said to
Abishai, Now
shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more
harm than did
Absalom: take thou thy lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him
fenced cities, and escape us.
And David said to
Abishai, “Now
Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more
harm than
Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and
elude us.”
Then she spake, saying, They were
wont to speak in old time, saying, They
shall surely ask counsel at
Abel: and so they ended the matter.
Then the woman said, “Long ago they used to say, ‘Seek counsel at
Abel,’ and that is how disputes were settled.
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head
shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What
shall I do for you? and
wherewith shall I make the
atonement, that ye may
bless the inheritance of the LORD?
So David asked the Gibeonites, “What
shall I do for you? How can I make
amends so that you may
bless the inheritance of the LORD?”
And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
The Gibeonites said to him, “We need no silver or gold from Saul or his house, nor should you put to death
anyone in Israel for us.” “Whatever you ask, I will do for you,” he replied.
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and
smote the
Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David
sware unto him, saying, Thou
shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou
quench not the light of Israel.
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the
Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men
swore to him, “You must never again go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel may not be
extinguished.”
I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
You have delivered me from the
strife of my people; You have preserved me as the head of nations; a people I had not known
shall serve me.
Strangers
shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they
shall be
obedient unto me.
Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me.
Strangers
shall fade away, and they
shall be afraid out of their close places.
Foreigners lose heart and come
trembling from their strongholds.
And he
shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear
shining after rain.
But the sons of
Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:
But the worthless are all like thorns
raked aside, for they can never be gathered by hand.
But the man that
shall touch them must be
fenced with iron and the staff of a
spear; and they
shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.
The man who touches them must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a
spear. The fire burns them to ashes in the place where they lie.”
So
Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him,
Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or
wilt thou
flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’
pestilence in thy land? now
advise, and see what answer I
shall return to him that sent me.
So
Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to
endure three years of famine in your land, three months of
fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him,
Didst not thou, my lord, O king,
swear unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son
shall reign after me, and he
shall sit upon my throne? why then
doth Adonijah reign?
Go at once to King David and say, ‘My lord the king, did you not
swear to your
maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’
And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son
shall reign after me, and he
shall sit upon my throne.
“My lord,” she replied, “you
yourself swore to your
maidservant by the LORD your God: ‘Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.’
And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”
And
Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah
shall reign after me, and he
shall sit upon my throne?
“My lord the king,” said
Nathan, “did you say, ‘Adonijah will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne’?
Even as I
sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son
shall reign after me, and he
shall sit upon my throne in my
stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
I will carry out this very day exactly what I
swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
Then ye
shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he
shall be king in my
stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. For I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
And Solomon said, If he will
shew himself a worthy man, there
shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness
shall be found in him, he
shall die.
And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character, not a single hair of his will fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he will die.”
That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take
heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there
shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
and so that the LORD may
fulfill His promise to me: ‘If your descendants take
heed to walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’
Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the One who established me, who set me on the throne of my father David, and who founded for me a dynasty as He promised—surely Adonijah
shall be put to death
today!”
And the LORD
shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head, for without the knowledge of my father David he struck down two men more righteous and better than he when he put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
Their blood
shall therefore return upon the head of
Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne,
shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
Their blood will come back upon the heads of
Joab and his descendants
forever; but for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, there
shall be peace from the LORD
forever.”
For it
shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the
brook Kidron, thou
shalt know for certain that thou
shalt surely die: thy blood
shall be upon thine own head.
On the day you go out and cross the Kidron Valley, know for sure that you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”
And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to
swear by the LORD, and
protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any
whither, that thou
shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you
swear by the LORD and
warn you, ‘On the day you leave and go elsewhere, know for sure that you will die’? And you told me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will
comply.’
