In the day when I
cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my
soul.
On the day I called, You answered me; You
emboldened me and strengthened my
soul.
I will praise thee; for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my
soul knoweth right well.
I praise You, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made.
Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well.
But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.
But my eyes are fixed on You, O GOD the Lord. In You I seek refuge; do not leave my
soul defenseless.
I looked on my right hand, and
beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my
soul.
Look to my right and see; no one attends to me. There is no refuge for me; no one cares for my soul.

soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal

For the enemy hath
persecuted my
soul; he hath
smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.

soul,
crushing my life to the ground, making me dwell in darkness like those long since dead.
I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my
soul thirsteth after thee, as a
thirsty land.
Selah.
I stretch out my hands to You; my
soul thirsts for You like a
parched land.
Selah Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Teach me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul.
Quicken me, O LORD, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my
soul out of trouble.
For the sake of Your name, O LORD, revive me. In Your righteousness, bring my soul out of trouble.
And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that
afflict my
soul: for I am thy servant.
And in Your loving devotion, cut off my enemies. Destroy all who
afflict me, for I am Your servant.
Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will delight your soul.

They will be life to your
soul and
adornment to your neck.

despise the
thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger.

soul.

soul of the
sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the
soul of the
diligent shall be made fat.

soul of the
diligent is fully satisfied.
The desire accomplished is sweet to the
soul: but it is
abomination to fools to depart from evil.

soul, but turning from evil is
detestable to fools.

soul: but the
belly of the wicked shall want.

souls: but a
deceitful witness speaketh lies.

He who ignores discipline despises himself, but
whoever heeds correction gains understanding.

highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his
soul.

honeycomb, sweet to the
soul, and health to the bones.
A
fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the
snare of his
soul.
A
fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a
snare to his
soul.

hurries his footsteps misses the mark.

doth keep his
soul shall be far from them.

soul stays far from them.
for the LORD will take up their case and will
plunder those who
rob them.
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a
snare to thy
soul.

soul from
hell.

soul from
Sheol.
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not;
doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy
soul,
doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?
If you say, “Behold, we did not know about this,” does not He who weighs hearts consider it? Does not the One who guards your life know? Will He not repay a man according to his deeds?

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful
messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the
soul of his masters.

trustworthy messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the
soul of his masters.
As cold waters to a
thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

weary soul is good news from a distant land.

soul loatheth an
honeycomb; but to the
hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

hungry soul, any bitter thing is sweet.

There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.
There is one alone, and there is not a second;
yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and
bereave my
soul of good? This is also vanity,
yea, it is a
sore travail.
There is a man all alone, without even a son or brother. And though there is no end to his labor, his eyes are still not content with his wealth: “For whom do I
toil and
bereave my
soul of enjoyment?” This too is
futile—a
miserable task.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires; but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is
futile and a
grievous affliction.
If a man
beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his
soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
A man may father a hundred children and live for many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he is unsatisfied with his prosperity and does not even receive a proper burial, I say that a
stillborn child is better off than he.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
While my soul was still searching but not finding, among a thousand I have found one upright man, but among all these I have not found one such woman.
Tell me, O thou whom my
soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at
noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
Tell me, O one I love, where do you pasture your sheep? Where do you rest them at
midday? Why should I be like a
veiled woman beside the flocks of your companions?
By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
On my bed at night I sought the one I love; I sought him, but did not find him.
I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
I will arise now and go about the city, through the streets and squares. I will seek the one I love. So I sought him but did not find him.
The
watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my
soul loveth?
It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
I had just passed them when I found the one I love. I held him and would not let go until I had brought him to my mother’s house, to the chamber of the one who conceived me.
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
I opened for my beloved, but he had turned and gone. My heart
sank at his departure. I sought him, but did not find him. I called, but he did not answer.
Or ever I was aware, my
soul made me like the
chariots of Amminadib.
Before I realized it, my desire had set me among the royal
chariots of my people.
Your new moons and your appointed feasts my
soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am
weary to bear them.
I
hate your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They have become a burden to Me; I am
weary of bearing them.
The
shew of their countenance
doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as
Sodom, they hide it not.
Woe unto their
soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like
Sodom they
flaunt their sin; they do not
conceal it.
Woe to them, for they have brought
disaster upon themselves.
And shall
consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both
soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.
The
splendor of its forests and orchards, both
soul and body, it will completely destroy, as a sickness consumes a man.
And
Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his life shall be
grievous unto him.
Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices are heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out; their
souls tremble within.
Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our
soul is to thy name, and to the
remembrance of thee.
Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path of Your judgments. Your name and
renown are the desire of our
souls.
With my
soul have I desired thee in the night;
yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
My
soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
It shall even be as when an
hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his
soul is empty: or as when a
thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is
faint, and his
soul hath
appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount
Zion.
as when a
hungry man dreams he is eating, then awakens still
hungry; as when a
thirsty man dreams he is drinking, then awakens
faint and
parched. So will it be for all the many nations who go to battle against Mount
Zion.
For the
vile person will speak
villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to
practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the
soul of the
hungry, and he will cause the drink of the
thirsty to fail.
What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the
anguish of my
soul.
Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
Surely for my own
welfare I had such great
anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of
oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
Behold my servant, whom I
uphold; mine
elect, in whom my
soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
“Here is My Servant, whom I
uphold, My Chosen One, in whom My
soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will bring justice to the nations.
He feedeth on ashes: a
deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his
soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
He feeds on ashes. His
deluded heart has led him
astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”
But I will put it into the hand of them that
afflict thee; which have said to thy
soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.
I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ so that you made your back like the ground, like a street to be traversed.”
Yet it pleased the LORD to
bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his
soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall
prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall
prosper in his hand.
Yet it was the LORD’s will to
crush Him and to cause Him to suffer; and when His
soul is made a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will
prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will
prosper in His hand.
He shall see of the
travail of his
soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant
justify many; for he shall bear their
iniquities.
After the
anguish of His
soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will
justify many, and He will bear their
iniquities.
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the
spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his
soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Therefore I will
allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your
soul delight itself in fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your
soul will delight in the richest of foods.
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your
soul shall live; and I will make an
everlasting covenant with you, even the sure
mercies of David.
Incline your ear and come to Me;
listen, so that your
soul may live. I will make with you an
everlasting covenant— My loving devotion promised to David.
For I will not
contend for ever, neither will I be always
wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the
souls which I have made.
For I will not
accuse you
forever, nor will I always be
angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made.
Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we
afflicted our
soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
“Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you
oppress all your workers.
Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to
afflict his
soul? is it to bow down his head as a
bulrush, and to spread
sackcloth and ashes under him?
wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out
sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD?
And if thou draw out thy
soul to the
hungry, and satisfy the
afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the
noonday:
and if you give
yourself to the
hungry and satisfy the
afflicted soul, then your light will go forth in the darkness, and your night will be like
noonday.
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy
soul in
drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you in a sun-
scorched land and
strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
I will greatly
rejoice in the LORD, my
soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my
soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns herself with her jewels.
He that killeth an ox is as if he
slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an
oblation, as if he offered
swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an
idol.
Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their
soul delighteth in their abominations.
Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man;
whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood;
whoever offers
frankincense is like one who blesses an
idol. Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.
Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
Moreover, your skirts are
stained with the blood of the innocent poor, though you did not find them breaking in. But in spite of all these things
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly
deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the
soul.
Then I said, “
Ah, Lord GOD, how completely You have
deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ while a sword is at our throats.”
My
bowels, my
bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my
soul, the sound of the
trump, the
alarm of war.
My
anguish, my
anguish! I
writhe in pain! Oh, the pain in my chest! My heart pounds within me; I cannot be silent. For I have heard the sound of the horn, the
alarm of battle.
For I have heard a voice as of a woman in
travail, and the
anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of
Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying,
Woe is me now! for my
soul is
wearied because of murderers.
For I hear a cry like a woman in labor, a cry of
anguish like one bearing her first child— the cry of the Daughter of
Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands to say, “
Woe is me, for my
soul faints before the murderers!”
Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my
soul be
avenged on such a nation as this?
Should I not
punish them for these things?” declares the LORD. “Should I not
avenge Myself on such a nation as this?
Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my
soul be
avenged on such a nation as this?
Should I not
punish them for these things?” declares the LORD. “Should I not
avenge Myself on such a nation as this?
Be thou
instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my
soul depart from thee; lest I make thee
desolate, a land not inhabited.
Be
forewarned, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you; I will make you a
desolation, a land without inhabitant.”
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’ Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’
Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my
soul be
avenged on such a nation as this?
Should I not
punish them for these things? declares the LORD. Should I not
avenge Myself on such a nation as this?”
I have
forsaken mine house, I have left mine
heritage; I have given the
dearly beloved of my
soul into the hand of her enemies.
I have
forsaken My house; I have abandoned My inheritance. I have given the love of My life into the hands of her enemies.
But if ye will not hear it, my
soul shall
weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall
weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away
captive.
But if you do not
listen, I will
weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken
captive.
Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy
soul lothed Zion? why hast thou
smitten us, and there is no
healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of
healing, and behold trouble!
Have You rejected Judah completely? Do You
despise Zion? Why have You
stricken us so that we are beyond
healing? We hoped for peace, but no good has come, and for the time of
healing, but there was only terror.
