And all
the people saw
the thunderings, and
the lightnings, and
the noise of
the trumpet, and
the mountain smoking: and when
the people saw it,
they removed, and stood
afar off.
And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
“Speak to us
yourself and we will
listen,”
they said to Moses. “But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”
And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
“Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test you, so that
the fear of Him may be before you, to keep you from
sinning.”
And
the people stood
afar off, and Moses drew near unto
the thick darkness where God was.
And the people stood at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “This is what you are to tell
the Israelites: ‘You have seen for
yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.
An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice
thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto
thee, and I will
bless thee.
You are to make for Me an altar of earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and cattle. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and
bless you.
Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered
thereon.
And you must not go up to My altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.’
Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.
“These are the ordinances that you are to set before them:
If thou
buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in
the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
If you
buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in
the seventh year, he shall go free without paying anything.
If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
If he arrived alone, he is to leave alone; if he arrived with a wife, she is to leave with him.
If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.
If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:
But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children; I do not want to go free,’
Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.
then his master is to bring him before
the judges. And he shall take him to
the door or
doorpost and
pierce his ear with an
awl.
Then he shall serve his master for life.
And if a man sell his daughter to be a
maidservant, she shall not go out as
the menservants do.
And if a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as the menservants do.
If she please not her master, who hath
betrothed her to himself,
then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt
deceitfully with her.
If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master who had designated her for himself, he must allow her to be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, since he has broken faith with her.
And if he have
betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after
the manner of daughters.
And if he chooses her for his son, he must deal with her as with a daughter.
If he take him another wife; her food, her
raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.
If he takes another wife, he must not reduce
the food, clothing, or
marital rights of his first wife.
And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.
If, however, he does not provide her with
these three things, she is free to go without
monetary payment.
And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand;
then I will
appoint thee a place
whither he shall
flee.
If, however, he did not lie in wait, but God allowed it to happen,
then I will
appoint for you a place where he may
flee.
And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.
Whoever kidnaps another man must be put to death, whether he sells him or
the man is found in his possession.
And if men
strive together, and one
smite another with a stone, or with his
fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:
If men are quarreling and one strikes
the other with a stone or a
fist, and he does not die but is confined to bed,
If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff,
then shall he that
smote him be
quit: only he shall pay for
the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly
healed.
then the one who struck him shall go unpunished, as long as
the other can get up and walk around outside with his staff. Nevertheless, he must
compensate the man for his lost work and see that he is completely
healed.
And if a man
smite his servant, or his
maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.
If a man strikes his
manservant or
maidservant with a rod, and
the servant dies by his hand, he shall surely be punished.
Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.
However, if the servant gets up after a day or two, the owner shall not be punished, since the servant is his property.
If men
strive, and
hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as
the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as
the judges determine.
If men who are fighting strike a
pregnant woman and her child is born
prematurely, but
there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as
the woman’s husband demands and as
the court allows.
And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
But if a serious injury results, then you must require a life for a life—
And if a man
smite the eye of his servant, or
the eye of his
maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake.
If a man strikes and blinds
the eye of his
manservant or
maidservant, he must let
the servant go free as compensation for
the eye.
And if he knocks out
the tooth of his
manservant or
maidservant, he must let
the servant go free as compensation for
the tooth.
If an ox
gore a man or a woman, that
they die:
then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but
the owner of
the ox shall be
quit.
If an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox must surely be stoned, and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the ox shall not be held responsible.
But if
the ox were
wont to
push with his horn in time past, and it hath been
testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman;
the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.
But if
the ox has a habit of
goring, and its owner has been
warned yet does not restrain it, and it kills a man or woman,
then the ox must be stoned and its owner must also be put to death.
If
there be laid on him a sum of money,
then he shall give for
the ransom of his life
whatsoever is laid upon him.
If payment is demanded of him instead, he may
redeem his life by paying
the full amount demanded of him.
Whether he have
gored a son, or have
gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.
If the ox gores a son or a daughter, it shall be done to him according to the same rule.
If
the ox shall
push a
manservant or a
maidservant; he shall give unto
their master thirty shekels of silver, and
the ox shall be stoned.
If
the ox gores a
manservant or
maidservant,
the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to
the master of that servant, and
the ox must be stoned.
And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall
dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an
ass fall
therein;
If a man opens or digs a pit and fails to cover it, and an ox or a
donkey falls into it,
The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.
the owner of
the pit shall make
restitution; he must pay its owner, and
the dead animal will be his.
And if one man’s ox
hurt another’s, that he die;
then they shall sell
the live ox, and divide
the money of it; and
the dead ox also
they shall divide.
If a man’s ox injures his
neighbor’s ox and it dies,
they must sell
the live one and divide
the proceeds;
they also must divide
the dead animal.
Or if it be known that
the ox hath used to
push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and
the dead shall be his own.
But if it was known that
the ox had a habit of
goring, yet its owner failed to restrain it, he shall pay full compensation, ox for ox, and
the dead animal will be his.
If a
thief be found breaking up, and be
smitten that he die,
there shall no blood be shed for him.
If a
thief is caught breaking in and is beaten to death, no one shall be guilty of
bloodshed.
If
the sun be risen upon him,
there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full
restitution; if he have nothing,
then he shall be sold for his
theft.
If
the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or
ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
If what was
stolen is actually found alive in his possession—whether ox or
donkey or sheep—he must pay back double.
If a man shall cause a field or
vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man’s field; of
the best of his own field, and of
the best of his own
vineyard, shall he make
restitution.
If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that
the stacks of corn, or
the standing corn, or
the field, be consumed
therewith; he that
kindled the fire shall surely make
restitution.
If a fire breaks out and spreads to thornbushes so that it consumes
stacked or standing grain, or
the whole field,
the one who started
the fire must make full
restitution.
If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be
stolen out of
the man’s house; if
the thief be found, let him pay double.
If a man gives his
neighbor money or goods for safekeeping and
they are
stolen from
the neighbor’s house,
the thief, if caught, must pay back double.
If
the thief be not found,
then the master of
the house shall be brought unto
the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods.
If
the thief is not found,
the owner of
the house must appear before
the judges to determine whether he has taken his
neighbor’s property.
For all manner of
trespass, whether it be for ox, for
ass, for sheep, for
raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his,
the cause of both parties shall come before
the judges; and whom
the judges shall
condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
In all cases of
illegal possession of an ox, a
donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost
item that someone claims, ‘This is mine,’ both parties shall bring
their cases before
the judges.
The one whom
the judges find guilty must pay back double to his
neighbor.
Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.
an oath before
the LORD shall be made between
the parties to determine whether or not
the man has taken his
neighbor’s property.
The owner must accept
the oath and require no
restitution.
If it be
torn in pieces,
then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was
torn.
And if a man
borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be
hurt, or die,
the owner
thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.
If a man borrows an animal from his
neighbor and it is injured or dies while its owner is not present, he must make full
restitution.
But if
the owner
thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an
hired thing, it came for his
hire.
If
the owner was present, no
restitution is required. If
the animal was rented,
the fee covers
the loss.
If a man seduces a virgin who is not
pledged in marriage and sleeps with her, he must pay
the full
dowry for her to be his wife.
If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to
the dowry of virgins.
If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him,
the man still must pay an amount comparable to
the bridal price of a virgin.
He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
If
anyone sacrifices to any god other than
the LORD alone, he must be set apart for destruction.
Thou shalt neither
vex a stranger, nor
oppress him: for ye were strangers in
the land of Egypt.
If thou
afflict them in any wise, and
they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear
their cry;
If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to Me in distress, I will surely hear their cry.
And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
My anger will be
kindled, and I will kill you with
the sword;
then your wives will become widows and your children will be fatherless.
If thou
lend money to any of my people that is poor by
thee, thou shalt not be to him as an
usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him
usury.
If you
lend money to one of My people among you who is poor, you must not act as a
creditor to him; you are not to charge him interest.
If thou at all take thy neighbour’s
raiment to
pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that
the sun goeth down:
For that is his covering only, it is his
raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am
gracious.
because his
cloak is
the only covering he has for his body. What else will he sleep in? And if he
cries out to Me, I will hear, for I am
compassionate.
Thou shalt not
revile the gods, nor
curse the ruler of thy people.
Thou shalt not delay to offer
the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors:
the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.
You must not hold back offerings from your
granaries or vats. You are to give Me
the firstborn of your sons.
Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his
dam; on
the eighth day thou shalt give it me.
You shall do likewise with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but on the eighth day you are to give them to Me.
And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is
torn of beasts in
the field; ye shall cast it to
the dogs.
You are to be My holy people. You must not eat
the meat of a
mauled animal found in
the field; you are to throw it to
the dogs.
Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
“You shall not spread a false report. Do not join
the wicked by being a
malicious witness.
Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to
wrest judgment:
If thou see
the ass of him that hateth
thee lying under his burden, and wouldest
forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
If you see
the donkey of one who hates you fallen under its load, do not leave it
there; you must help him with it.
Thou shalt not
wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.
You shall not deny justice to the poor in their lawsuits.
Keep
thee far from a false matter; and
the innocent and righteous
slay thou not: for I will not
justify the wicked.
Stay far away from a false
accusation. Do not kill
the innocent or
the just, for I will not
acquit the guilty.
And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
Do not accept a
bribe, for a
bribe blinds those who see and twists
the words of
the righteous.
Also thou shalt not
oppress a stranger: for ye know
the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in
the land of Egypt.
Do not
oppress a foreign resident, since you
yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners; for you were foreigners in
the land of Egypt.
And six years thou shalt
sow thy land, and shalt gather in
the fruits
thereof:
For six years you are to
sow your land and gather its produce,
But
the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that
the poor of thy people may eat: and what
they leave
the beasts of
the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy
vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.
but in
the seventh year you must let it rest and lie
fallow, so that
the poor among your people may eat from
the field and
the wild animals may
consume what
they leave. Do
the same with your
vineyard and olive
grove.
Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on
the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine
ass may rest, and
the son of thy
handmaid, and
the stranger, may be refreshed.
For six days you are to do your work, but on
the seventh day you must cease, so that your ox and your
donkey may rest and
the son of your
maidservant may be refreshed, as well as
the foreign resident.
And in all things that I have said unto you be
circumspect: and make no mention of
the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.
Pay close attention to everything I have said to you. You must not
invoke the names of other gods;
they must not be heard on your lips.
Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.
Three times a year you are to
celebrate a feast to Me.
Thou shalt keep
the feast of
unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat
unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded
thee, in
the time appointed of
the month
Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)
You are to keep
the Feast of
Unleavened Bread as I commanded you: At
the appointed time in
the month of
Abib you are to eat
unleavened bread for seven days, because that was
the month you came out of Egypt. No one may appear before Me empty-handed.
And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.
You are also to keep
the Feast of Harvest with
the firstfruits of
the produce from what you
sow in
the field. And keep
the Feast of Ingathering at
the end of
the year, when you gather your produce from
the field.
Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD.
Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord GOD.
Thou shalt not offer
the blood of my sacrifice with
leavened bread; neither shall
the fat of my sacrifice remain until
the morning.
You must not offer
the blood of My sacrifices with anything
leavened, nor may
the fat of My feast remain until morning.
The first of
the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into
the house of
the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not
seethe a
kid in his mother’s milk.
Bring
the best of
the firstfruits of your soil to
the house of
the LORD your God. You must not
cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.
But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak;
then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an
adversary unto thine
adversaries.
But if you will
listen carefully to his voice and do everything I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a
foe to your foes.
Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
You must not bow down to
their gods or serve
them or follow
their practices. Instead, you are to
demolish them and
smash their sacred stones to pieces.
And ye shall serve
the LORD your God, and he shall
bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from
the midst of
thee.
So you shall serve
the LORD your God, and He will
bless your bread and your water. And I will take away sickness from among you.
There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
No woman in your land will miscarry or be barren; I will
fulfill the number of your days.
I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.
I will send My terror
ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you
encounter. I will make all your enemies turn and run.
And I will send hornets before
thee, which shall drive out
the Hivite,
the Canaanite, and
the Hittite, from before
thee.
I will not drive
them out from before
thee in one year; lest
the land become
desolate, and
the beast of
the field multiply against
thee.
I will not drive
them out before you in a single year; otherwise
the land would become
desolate and wild animals would multiply against you.
By little and little I will drive
them out from before
thee, until thou be increased, and
inherit the land.
Little by little I will drive
them out
ahead of you, until you become fruitful and possess
the land.
And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.
And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the desert to the Euphrates. For I will deliver the inhabitants into your hand, and you will drive them out before you.
Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.
You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods.
They shall not dwell in thy land, lest
they make
thee sin against me: for if thou serve
their gods, it will surely be a
snare unto
thee.
They must not remain in your land, lest
they cause you to sin against Me. For if you serve
their gods, it will surely be a
snare to you.”
And he said unto Moses, Come up unto
the LORD, thou, and Aaron,
Nadab, and
Abihu, and seventy of
the elders of Israel; and worship ye
afar off.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to
the LORD—you and Aaron,
Nadab and
Abihu, and seventy of Israel’s elders—and you are to worship at a distance.
And Moses alone shall come near
the LORD: but
they shall not come
nigh; neither shall
the people go up with him.
Moses alone shall approach the LORD, but the others must not come near. And the people may not go up with him.”
And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.
When Moses came and told
the people all
the words and ordinances of
the LORD,
they all
responded with one voice: “All
the words that
the LORD has spoken, we will do.”
And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.
And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. Early the next morning he got up and built an altar at the base of the mountain, along with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.
And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD.
Then he sent out some young men of Israel, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as peace offerings to the LORD.
And Moses took half of
the blood, and put it in basons; and half of
the blood he
sprinkled on
the altar.
Moses took half of
the blood and put it in
bowls, and
the other half he
sprinkled on
the altar.
And he took
the book of
the covenant, and read in
the audience of
the people: and
they said, All that
the LORD hath said will we do, and be
obedient.
Then he took
the Book of
the Covenant and read it to
the people, who replied, “All that
the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be
obedient.”
