But he, willing to
justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
The same day there came certain of the
Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
At that very hour, some
Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod
wants to kill You.”
And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
After he had spent all he had, a severe famine swept through that country, and he began to be in need.
Saying, What
wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
“What do you want Me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said, “let me see again.”
But his citizens
hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
But his subjects
hated him and sent a
delegation after him to say, ‘We do not
want this man to rule over us.’
And they said unto him, Where
wilt thou that we prepare?
“Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked.
And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding
glad: for he was
desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some
miracle done by him.
When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had
wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a
miracle.
Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
Wanting to release Jesus,
Pilate addressed them again,
Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him,
Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you
want?” He asked. They said to Him, “
Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.”
And upon this came his disciples, and
marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him,
Wilt thou be made whole?
When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
And Jesus took the
loaves; and when he had given
thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
Then Jesus took the
loaves and the fish, gave
thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they
wanted.
Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”
After these things Jesus walked in
Galilee: for he would not walk in
Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
After this, Jesus traveled throughout
Galilee. He did not
want to travel in
Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things,
shew thyself to the world.
For no one who
wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show
Yourself to the world.”
And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a
liar, and the father of it.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you
want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to
uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a
liar and the father of lies.
He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
He replied, “I already told you, and you did not
listen. Why do you
want to hear it again? Do you also
want to become His disciples?”
The same came therefore to Philip, which was of
Bethsaida of
Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
They came to Philip, who was from
Bethsaida in
Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we
want to see Jesus.”
Now Jesus knew that they were
desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye
enquire among
yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus said to them, “Are you asking one another why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’?
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the
passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the
Passover. So then, do you
want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
Verily,
verily, I say unto thee, When thou
wast young, thou girdedst
thyself, and walkedst
whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall
gird thee, and carry thee
whither thou wouldest not.
Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed
yourself and walked where you
wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not
want to go.”
Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he
tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!”
Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he
tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
Because of this, the
rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I
want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”
Do you
want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian
yesterday?’
And he became very
hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a
trance,
He became
hungry and
wanted something to eat, but while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a
trance.
Which was with the deputy of the country,
Sergius Paulus, a
prudent man; who called for
Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.
Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and
circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
Paul
wanted Timothy to
accompany him, so he took him and
circumcised him on account of the Jews in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out
privily?
nay verily; but let them come themselves and
fetch us out.
But Paul said to the officers, “They beat us publicly without a trial and threw us into prison, even though we are Roman citizens. And now do they
want to send us away secretly? Absolutely not! Let them come themselves and
escort us out!”
For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
For you are bringing some strange notions to our ears, and we want to know what they mean.”
And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to
mock him, but others said, “We
want to hear you again on this
topic.”
And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
Paul wanted to go before the assembly, but the disciples would not allow him.
On the
morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
The next day the commander,
wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole
Sanhedrin to
assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:
and since I
wanted to understand their charges against him, I brought him down to their
Sanhedrin.
But the
centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could
swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
They examined me and wanted to release me, because there was no basis for a death sentence against me.
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that
oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
I do not
want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I
planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I
hate, that do I.
I do not understand what I do. For what I
want to do, I do not do. But what I
hate, I do.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good.
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do.
Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
So this is the principle I have discovered: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
Therefore God has mercy on whom He
wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He
wants to
harden.
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this
mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the
fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
I do not
want you to be ignorant of this
mystery, brothers, so that you will not be
conceited: A
hardening in part has come to Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil.
Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you
want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will have his
approval.
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am
glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I
rejoice over you. But I
want you to be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil.
Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you!
But and if thou marry, thou hast not
sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not
sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I
spare you.
But if you do marry, you have not
sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not
sinned. But those who marry will face troubles in this life, and I
want to
spare you this.
But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
I
want you to be free from
concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord.
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have
fellowship with devils.
No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.
If any of them that believe not
bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go;
whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, and in which you stand firm.
For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to
tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit.
For I do not
want to see you now only in passing; I hope to
spend some time with you, if the Lord permits.
For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength,
insomuch that we
despaired even of life:
We do not
want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we
encountered in the province of Asia. We were under a burden far beyond our ability to
endure, so that we
despaired even of life.
And to pass by you into
Macedonia, and to come again out of
Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.
I
wanted to visit you on my way to
Macedonia, and to return to you from
Macedonia, and then to have you help me on my way to
Judea.
Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of
Macedonia;
Now, brothers, we
want you to know about the grace that God has given the churches of
Macedonia.
But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
At the present time, your
surplus will meet their need, so that in turn their
surplus will meet your need. Then there will be equality.
For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;
For this ministry of service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many expressions of
thanksgiving to God.
That I may not seem as if I would
terrify you by letters.
I do not
want to seem to be trying to
frighten you by my letters.
And when I was present with you, and
wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from
Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being
burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to
anyone; for the brothers who came from
Macedonia supplied my needs. I have
refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do so.
But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who
want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the things of which they
boast.
For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I
wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
They
zealously affect you, but not well;
yea, they would
exclude you, that ye might affect them.
Those people are
zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they
want to
isolate you from us, so that you may be
zealous for them.
Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not understand what the law says?
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
As many as desire to make a fair
shew in the flesh, they
constrain you to be
circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.
Those who
want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to
compel you to be
circumcised. They only do this to avoid persecution for the cross of Christ.
For neither they themselves who are
circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you
circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the
furtherance of the gospel;
Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances have actually served to advance the gospel.
Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellow soldier, but your
messenger, and he that ministered to my
wants.
But I thought it necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, who is also your
messenger and minister to my needs.
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the
fellowship of his sufferings, being made
conformable unto his death;
I
want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the
fellowship of His sufferings, being
conformed to Him in His death,
Not that I speak in respect of
want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am,
therewith to be content.
I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances.
For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
For I
want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at
Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face,
Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but
Satan hindered us.
For we
wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again and again—but
Satan obstructed us.
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
Brothers, we do not
want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not
grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an
ensample unto you to follow us.
Not that we lack this right, but we
wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to
imitate.
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor
whereof they
affirm.
They
want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or that which they so
confidently assert.
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
who
wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
Therefore I
want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or
dissension.
Likewise, I
want the women to
adorn themselves with respectable
apparel, with
modesty, and with self-control, not with
braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax
wanton against Christ, they will marry;
But refuse to
enroll younger widows. For when their passions draw them away from Christ, they will
want to marry,
And
withal they learn to be idle,
wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and
busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
At the same time they will also learn to be idle, going from house to house and being not only idle, but also gossips and
busybodies,
discussing things they should not mention.
Those who
want to be rich, however, fall into
temptation and become ensnared by many
foolish and
harmful desires that
plunge them into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some
coveted after, they have
erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By
craving it, some have
wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
For this cause left I thee in
Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are
wanting, and
ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
The reason I left you in
Crete was that you would set in order what was unfinished and
appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou
affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
This saying is
trustworthy. And I
want you to
emphasize these things, so that those who have believed God will take care to
devote themselves to good deeds. These things are excellent and profitable for the people.
Bring Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos on their journey
diligently, that nothing be
wanting unto them.
Do your best to
equip Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos, so that they will have everything they need.
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
But I did not
want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of
compulsion, but by your own free will.
And we desire that every one of you do
shew the same
diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
We
want each of you to show this same
diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to
shew unto the heirs of promise the
immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
So when God
wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of the promise, He
guaranteed it with an oath.
They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to death by the sword. They went around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute,
oppressed, and mistreated.
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they
wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
The world was not worthy of them. They
wandered in deserts and mountains, and
hid in caves and holes in the ground.
For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of
repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
For you know that afterward, when he
wanted to
inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for
repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.
But let
patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire,
wanting nothing.
Allow
perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be
mature and complete, not lacking anything.
