And David dwelt
with Achish at
Gath, he and his men, every man
with his household, even David
with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and
Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.
David and his men settled in
Gath with Achish. Each man had his family
with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of
Jezreel and
Abigail of
Carmel, the widow of Nabal.
And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let me be assigned a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. For why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”
And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight
with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou
assuredly, that thou shalt go out
with me to battle, thou and thy men.
Now in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for warfare against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men are to go out to battle with me.”
And Saul
disguised himself, and put on other
raiment, and he went, and two men
with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out
with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
And when the woman saw Samuel, she
cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou
deceived me? for thou art Saul.
But when the woman saw Samuel, she
cried out in a loud voice and said to Saul, “Why have you
deceived me? You are Saul!”
And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered
with a
mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he
stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
“What does he look like?” asked Saul. “An old man is coming up,” she replied. “And he is wearing a
robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed facedown in reverence.
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel
with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to
morrow shalt thou and thy sons be
with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel
with you into the hand of the Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your sons will be
with me. And the LORD will deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together
with the woman, compelled him; and he
hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.
Saul refused, saying, “I will not eat.” But his servants joined the woman in
urging him, and he
heeded their voice. He got up from the ground and sat on the bed.
And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.
As the
Philistine leaders marched out their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men marched behind them
with Achish.
Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?
Then the commanders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish replied, “Is this not David, the servant of King Saul of Israel? He has been
with me all these days, even years, and from the day he defected until
today I have found no fault in him.”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down
with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be
with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down
with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than
with the heads of our men?
Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.
And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
“But what have I done?” David replied. “What have you found against your servant, from the day I came to you until
today, to keep me from going along to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’
Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.
Now then, get up early in the morning, along with your master’s servants who came with you, and go as soon as it is light.”
And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to
Ziklag on the third day, that the
Amalekites had invaded the south, and
Ziklag, and
smitten Ziklag, and burned it
with fire;
So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned
with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken
captives.
When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned down and their wives and sons and daughters taken
captive.
Then David and the people that were
with him lifted up their voice and
wept, until they had no more power to
weep.
So David and the troops
with him lifted up their voices and
wept until they had no strength left to
weep.
And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this
troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and
without fail recover all.
and David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” the LORD replied, “for you will surely overtake them and
rescue the
captives.”
So David went, he and the six hundred men that were
with him, and came to the
brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.
So David and his six hundred men went to the
Brook of Besor, where some stayed behind
We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of
Caleb; and we burned
Ziklag with fire.
We
raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of
Caleb, and we burned down
Ziklag.”
And David came to the two hundred men, which were so
faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to
abide at the
brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were
with him: and when David came near to the people, he
saluted them.
When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him from the
Brook of Besor, they came out to meet him and the troops
with him. As David approached the men, he
greeted them,
Then answered all the wicked men and men of
Belial, of those that went
with David, and said, Because they went not
with us, we will not give them ought of the
spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
but all the wicked and worthless men among those who had gone
with David said, “Because they did not go
with us, we will not share
with them the
plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”
Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
For who will
hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.
Who will
listen to your proposal? The share of the one who went to battle will
match the share of the one who stayed
with the supplies. They will share alike.”
And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
When his
armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died
with him.
It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul
with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did
obeisance.
On the third day a man
with torn clothes and dust on his head arrived from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him
homage.
And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount
Gilboa, behold, Saul
leaned upon his
spear; and, lo, the
chariots and
horsemen followed hard after him.
“I happened to be on Mount
Gilboa,” he replied, “and there was Saul,
leaning on his
spear,
with the
chariots and the cavalry closing in on him.
Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
Then David took hold of his own clothes and
tore them, and all the men who were
with him did the same.
Ye mountains of
Gilboa, let there be no
dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is
vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been
anointed with oil.
O mountains of
Gilboa, may you have no
dew or rain, no fields yielding offerings of grain. For there the shield of the mighty was
defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer
anointed with oil.
Ye daughters of Israel,
weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet,
with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your
apparel.
O daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and
luxury, who decked your garments
with ornaments of gold.
So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and
Abigail Nabal’s wife the
Carmelite.
So David went there
with his two wives, Ahinoam of
Jezreel and
Abigail the widow of Nabal of
Carmel.
And his men that were
with him did David bring up, every man
with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of
Hebron.
David also took the men who were
with him, each
with his household, and they settled in the towns near
Hebron.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the other on the other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along
with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
But the servants of David had
smitten of Benjamin, and of
Abner’s men, so that three hundred and
threescore men died.
but they had struck down 360 Benjamites who were
with Abner.
And Saul had a
concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and
Ish-bosheth said to
Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father’s
concubine?
Meanwhile, Saul had a
concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So
Ish-bosheth questioned
Abner, “Why did you sleep
with my father’s
concubine?”
Then was
Abner very
wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do
shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day
with a fault concerning this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with this woman!
And
Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league
with me, and, behold, my hand shall be
with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
Then
Abner sent messengers in his place to say to David, “To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant
with me, and surely my hand will be
with you to bring all Israel over to you.”
And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
And her husband went
with her along
weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said
Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
Her husband followed her,
weeping all the way to Bahurim. Then
Abner said to him, “Go back.” So he returned home.
And
Abner had communication
with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:
Now
Abner conferred
with the elders of Israel and said, “In the past you sought David as your king.
So
Abner came to David to
Hebron, and twenty men
with him. And David made
Abner and the men that were
with him a feast.
When
Abner and twenty of his men came to David at
Hebron, David held a feast for them.
And
Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league
with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent
Abner away; and he went in peace.
Then
Abner said to David, “Let me go at once, and I will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant
with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.” So David dismissed
Abner, and he went in peace.
And, Behold, the servants of David and
Joab came from pursuing a
troop, and brought in a great
spoil with them: but
Abner was not
with David in
Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
Just then David’s soldiers and
Joab returned from a
raid, bringing
with them a great
plunder. But
Abner was not
with David in
Hebron because David had sent him on his way in peace.
When
Joab and all the host that was
with him were come, they told
Joab, saying,
Abner the son of
Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
When
Joab and all his troops arrived, he was informed, “
Abner son of
Ner came to see the king, who sent him on his way in peace.”
And when
Abner was returned to
Hebron,
Joab took him aside in the gate to speak
with him quietly, and
smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of
Asahel his brother.
Let it rest on the head of
Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of
Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a
leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
May it
whirl over the heads of
Joab and the entire house of his father, and may the house of
Joab never be
without one having a discharge or skin disease, or one who leans on a staff or falls by the sword or lacks food.”
And David said to
Joab, and to all the people that were
with him,
Rend your clothes, and
gird you
with sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner. And king David himself followed the
bier.
Then David ordered
Joab and all the people
with him, “
Tear your clothes, put on
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner.” And King David himself walked behind the funeral
bier.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king to
Hebron; and king David made a league
with them in
Hebron before the LORD: and they
anointed David king over Israel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron, where King David made
with them a covenant before the LORD. And they
anointed him king over Israel.
And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of Hosts was with him.
And
Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and
cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.
Now
Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along
with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David.
And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.
And he and all his troops set out for Baale of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name— the name of the LORD of Hosts, who is enthroned between the
cherubim that are on it.
And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.
bringing with it the ark of God. And Ahio was walking in front of the ark.
And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of
fir wood, even on harps, and on
psalteries, and on
timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
David and all the house of Israel were
celebrating before the LORD
with all kinds of wood instruments, harps, stringed instruments, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.
And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obed-
edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-
edom into the city of David
with gladness.
Now it was reported to King David, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-
edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and had the ark of God brought up from the house of Obed-
edom into the City of David
with rejoicing.
And David danced before the LORD
with all his might; and David was
girded with a linen
ephod.
And David, wearing a linen
ephod, danced
with all his might before the LORD,
So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD
with shouting, and
with the sound of the
trumpet.
while he and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD
with shouting and the sounding of the ram’s horn.
That the king said unto
Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of
cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth
within curtains.
he said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of
cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
And
Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is
with thee.
And
Nathan replied to the king, “Go and do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is
with you.”
Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved about with a tent as My dwelling.
In all the places wherein I have walked
with all the children of Israel spake I a word
with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of
cedar?
In all My journeys
with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to
shepherd My people Israel, ‘Why
haven’t you built Me a house of
cedar?’
And I was
with thee
whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep
with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy
bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest
with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will
chasten him
with the rod of men, and
with the stripes of the children of men:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, You have also spoken about the future of the house of Your servant. Is this Your custom with man, O Lord GOD?
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
Therefore now let it please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and
with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
Now therefore, may it please You to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and
with Your blessing the house of Your servant will be blessed
forever.”
And he
smote Moab, and measured them
with a line, casting them down to the ground; even
with two lines measured he to put to death, and
with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down on the ground, and measured them off
with a cord. He measured off
with two lengths those to be put to death, and
with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
Then Toi sent
Joram his son unto king David, to
salute him, and to
bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and
smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars
with Toi. And
Joram brought
with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:
he sent his son
Joram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war
with Toi.
Joram brought
with him articles of silver and gold and bronze,
Which also king David did
dedicate unto the LORD,
with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;
and King David dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued—
And
Joab drew
nigh, and the people that were
with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
So
Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
Hadadezer sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, and they came to Helam with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in
array against David, and fought
with him.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans
arrayed themselves against David and fought against him.
And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were
smitten before Israel, they made peace
with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of
Ammon any more.
When all the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace
with Israel and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the
Ammonites anymore.
And it came to pass, after the year was
expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants
with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of
Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried still at Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out
Joab and his servants
with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the
Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay
with her; for she was
purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he
slept with her. (Now she had just
purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned home.
And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
And the woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am
pregnant.”
And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how
Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war
prospered.
When Uriah came to him, David asked how
Joab and the troops were doing
with the war.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the king’s house
with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the palace
with all his master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie
with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep
with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him
drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed
with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink
with him, and he got Uriah
drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his
cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to
Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
The next morning David wrote a letter to
Joab and sent it
with Uriah.
And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the
forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be
smitten, and die.
In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”
And the men of the city went out, and fought
with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
And when the men of the city came out and fought against
Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto
Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and
encourage thou him.
But the poor man had nothing, save one little
ewe lamb, which he had bought and
nourished up: and it grew up together
with him, and
with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and
drank of his own cup, and lay in his
bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
but the poor man had nothing except one small
ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up
with him and his children. It shared his food and
drank from his cup; it
slept in his arms and was like a daughter to him.
And David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
David burned
with anger against the man and said to
Nathan: “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
Wherefore hast thou
despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite
with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him
with the sword of the children of
Ammon.
Why then have you
despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own, for you have slain him
with the sword of the
Ammonites.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie
with them in broad
daylight.
David therefore
besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.
David
pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted and went into his house and spent the night lying in
sackcloth on the ground.
And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
The elders of his household stood beside him to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat anything with them.
And David comforted Bath-
sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay
with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.
Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. So she gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved the child
And he took their king’s crown from off his head, the weight
whereof was a talent of gold
with the precious stones: and it was set on David’s head. And he brought forth the
spoil of the city in great abundance.
Then he took the crown from the head of their king. It
weighed a talent of gold and was set
with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the
brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of
Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and put them to work
with saws, iron picks, and axes, and he made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass after this, that
Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
After some time, David’s son Amnon fell in love
with Tamar, the beautiful sister of David’s son
Absalom.
And Amnon was so
vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.
Amnon was sick
with frustration over his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed
implausible for him to do anything to her.
And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son,
lean from day to day?
wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother
Absalom’s sister.
so he asked Amnon, “Why are you, the son of the king, so depressed morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon replied, “I am in love
with Tamar, my brother
Absalom’s sister.”
And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.
And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said, “Come lie with me, my sister!”
