Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to
Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in
Hebron before the LORD; and they
anointed David king over Israel,
according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD. And they
anointed him king over Israel,
according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

bolstered and strengthened his kingdom,
according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

accordance with the word of the LORD:

according to the word of the LORD.
And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD.

excel.

So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD
Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required:
So David left
Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to minister there regularly
according to the daily requirements,
To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel;
to regularly present burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offerings, morning and evening, according to all that was written in the Law of the LORD, which He had commanded Israel to keep.
According to all these words, and
according to all this vision, so did
Nathan speak unto David.
So
Nathan relayed to David all the words of this entire vision.
And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O God, You have spoken about the future of the house of Your servant and have regarded me as a man of great distinction, O LORD God.
O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
O LORD. For the sake of Your servant and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed all Your greatness.
O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
O LORD, there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon,
Kohath, and Merari.
Then David divided the Levites into divisions
according to the sons of Levi: Gershom,
Kohath, and Merari.
And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one
reckoning,
according to their father’s house.
Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family and received a single
assignment.
For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above:
For according to the final instructions of David, the Levites twenty years of age or older were counted,
And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:
Whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, they were to serve regularly before the LORD in the numbers prescribed for them.
And David distributed them, both
Zadok of the sons of
Eleazar, and
Ahimelech of the sons of
Ithamar,
according to their offices in their service.
And there were more chief men found of the sons of
Eleazar than of the sons of
Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of
Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of
Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.
Since more leaders were found among
Eleazar’s descendants than those of
Ithamar, they were divided
accordingly. There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of
Eleazar and eight from the descendants of
Ithamar.
These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.
This was their appointed order for service when they entered the house of the LORD,
according to the regulations prescribed for them by their
forefather Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.
And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites, according to their families.
Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of
Asaph, and of Heman, and of
Jeduthun, who should
prophesy with harps, with
psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen
according to their service was:
Additionally, David and the commanders of the army set apart some of the sons of
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun to
prophesy with the
accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals. The following is the list of the men who performed this service:
Of the sons of
Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of
Asaph under the hands of
Asaph, which
prophesied according to the order of the king.
From the sons of
Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah. These sons of
Asaph were under the direction of
Asaph, who
prophesied under the direction of the king.
All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of the LORD, with cymbals,
psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God,
according to the king’s order to
Asaph,
Jeduthun, and Heman.
All these were under the direction of their fathers for the music of the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God.
Asaph,
Jeduthun, and Heman were under the direction of the king.
And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.
Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even among the Hebronites,
according to the generations of his fathers. In the
fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of
Gilead.
As for the Hebronites, Jerijah was the chief of the Hebronites,
according to the
genealogies of his ancestors. In the
fortieth year of David’s reign the records were searched, and strong, capable men were found among the Hebronites at Jazer in
Gilead.
Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every
candlestick, and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, both for the
candlestick, and also for the lamps thereof,
according to the use of every
candlestick.
the weight of the gold lampstands and their lamps, including the weight of each lampstand and its lamps; the weight of each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand;
Now these are the things wherein Solomon was
instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was
threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.
The foundation that Solomon laid for the house of God was sixty cubits long and twenty cubits wide, according to the old standard.
And the
porch that was in the front of the house, the length of it was
according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the height was an hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold.
The
portico at the front, extending across the width of the temple, was twenty cubits long and twenty cubits high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold.
And he made the most holy house, the length
whereof was
according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits: and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to six hundred talents.
Then he made the Most Holy Place; its length corresponded to the width of the temple—twenty cubits long and twenty cubits wide. And he overlaid the inside with six hundred talents of fine gold.
And he made ten candlesticks of gold according to their form, and set them in the temple, five on the right hand, and five on the left.
He made ten gold lampstands according to their specifications and placed them in the temple, five on the south side and five on the north.
Then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, by requiting the wicked, by
recompensing his way upon his own head; and by
justifying the righteous, by giving him
according to his righteousness.
then may You hear from heaven and act. May You judge Your servants,
condemning the wicked man by bringing down on his own head what he has done, and
justifying the righteous man by rewarding him
according to his righteousness.
Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and
forgive, and render unto every man
according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:)
be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You
forgive and repay each man
according to all his ways, since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of men—
Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do
according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as
doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You. Then all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and they will know that this house I have built is called by Your Name.
And as for thee, if thou
wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, and do
according to all that I have commanded thee, and shalt observe my statutes and my judgments;
And as for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, doing all I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and ordinances,
Then will I
stablish the throne of thy kingdom,
according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.
then I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have a man to rule over Israel.’
Even after a certain rate every day, offering
according to the commandment of Moses, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts, three times in the year, even in the feast of
unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles.
He observed the daily requirement for offerings
according to the commandment of Moses for Sabbaths, New Moons, and the three annual appointed feasts—the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles.
And he appointed,
according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the
porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.
In keeping with the ordinances of his father David, Solomon appointed the divisions of the priests over their service, and the Levites for their duties to offer praise and to minister before the priests according to the daily requirement. He also appointed gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate, for this had been the command of David, the man of God.
And these are the numbers of them according to the house of their fathers: Of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand.
These are their numbers
according to the houses of their fathers: From Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, and with him 300,000 mighty men of
valor;
And the
messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him, saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.
So the Levites and all Judah did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—for Jehoiada the priest had not released any of the divisions.
And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?”
So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
So the workmen labored, and in their hands the repair work progressed. They restored the house of God
according to its specifications, and they
reinforced it.
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
Moreover
Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds,
according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle
spear and shield.
Then
Amaziah gathered the people of Judah and assigned them
according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the army, bearing the
spear and shield.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD,
according to all that his father
Amaziah did.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father
Amaziah had done.
Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men, that went out to war by bands,
according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains.
Uzziah had an army ready for battle that went out to war by assigned divisions, as recorded by Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officers.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD,
according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people still
behaved corruptly.
Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
Moreover,
Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of
Hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire,
according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.
And they gathered their brethren, and
sanctified themselves, and came,
according to the commandment of the king, by the words of the LORD, to
cleanse the house of the LORD.
When they had assembled their brothers and consecrated themselves, they went in to
cleanse the house of the LORD,
according to the command of the king by the words of the LORD.
And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with
psalteries, and with harps,
according to the commandment of David, and of
Gad the king’s
seer, and
Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.
Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres
according to the command of David, of
Gad the king’s
seer, and of
Nathan the prophet. For the command had come from the LORD through His prophets.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and
according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.
Moreover, the power of God was on the people in Judah to give them one heart to obey the command of the king and his officials according to the word of the LORD.
And they stood in their place after their manner,
according to the law of Moses the man of God: the priests
sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites.
They stood at their prescribed posts,
according to the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests
sprinkled the blood, which they received from the hand of the Levites.
That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not
cleansed according to the
purification of the sanctuary.
who sets his heart on seeking God—the LORD, the God of his fathers—even if he is not
cleansed according to the
purification rules of the sanctuary.”
And
Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man
according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give
thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD.
Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests and Levites—each of them
according to their duties as priests or Levites—for the burnt offerings and peace offerings, for ministry, for giving
thanks, and for singing praises at the gates of the LORD’s dwelling.
And next him were
Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:
Under his authority,
Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully distributed portions to their fellow priests in their cities,
according to their divisions, old and young alike.
Beside their
genealogy of males, from three years old and upward, even unto every one that entereth into the house of the LORD, his daily portion for their service in their charges
according to their courses;
In addition, they distributed portions to the males registered by
genealogy who were three years of age or older—to all who would enter the house of the LORD for their daily duties for service in the responsibilities of their divisions—
Both to the
genealogy of the priests by the house of their fathers, and the Levites from twenty years old and upward, in their charges by their courses;
and to the priests
enrolled according to their families in the
genealogy, as well as to the Levites twenty years of age or older,
according to their duties and divisions.
But
Hezekiah rendered not again
according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
But because his heart was proud,
Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take
heed to do all that I have commanded them,
according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people,
according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
Then he had
everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand in agreement to it. So all the people of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
And prepare
yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses,
according to the writing of David king of Israel, and
according to the writing of Solomon his son.
Prepare
yourselves by families in your divisions,
according to the instructions written by David king of Israel and Solomon his son.
And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.
Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families of your
kinsmen the lay people, and by the divisions of the families of the Levites.
So kill the
passover, and
sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do
according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
Slaughter the
Passover lambs,
consecrate yourselves, and make preparations for your fellow countrymen to carry out the word of the LORD given by Moses.”
So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.
So the service was prepared; the priests stood in their places and the Levites in their divisions according to the king’s command.
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families of the people to offer to the LORD, as is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the bulls.
And they
roasted the
passover with fire
according to the
ordinance: but the other holy offerings
sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.
They
roasted the
Passover animals on the fire
according to the regulation, and they boiled the other holy offerings in pots, kettles, and
bowls and quickly brought them to all the people.
And the singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place,
according to the commandment of David, and
Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer; and the
porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
The singers, the descendants of
Asaph, were at their stations
according to the command of David,
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their position, because their fellow Levites made preparations for them.
So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day, to keep the
passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD,
according to the commandment of king
Josiah.
So on that day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for
celebrating the
Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD,
according to the command of King
Josiah.
Now the rest of the acts of
Josiah, and his goodness,
according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,
As for the rest of the acts of
Josiah, along with his deeds of loving devotion
according to what is written in the Law of the LORD—
They gave after their ability unto the
treasure of the work
threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred priests garments.
According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000
minas of silver, and 100 priestly garments.
They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;
They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily based on the number prescribed for each day.
They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring
cedar trees from
Lebanon to the sea of
Joppa,
according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.
They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of
Sidon and Tyre to bring
cedar logs from
Lebanon to
Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions,
according to that which
Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.
In
response, Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates
diligently carried out what King
Darius had decreed.
And the elders of the Jews builded, and they
prospered through the
prophesying of
Haggai the prophet and
Zechariah the son of
Iddo. And they builded, and finished it,
according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and
according to the commandment of Cyrus, and
Darius, and
Artaxerxes king of Persia.
And offered at the
dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats,
according to the number of the tribes of Israel.
For the
dedication of the house of God they offered a hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs, and a sin offering for all Israel of twelve male goats, one for each tribe of Israel.
And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.
They also appointed the priests by their divisions and the Levites by their groups to the service of God in Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.
This
Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready
scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request,
according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.
this
Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a
scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted
Ezra all his requests, for the hand of the LORD his God was upon him.
For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
He had begun the journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the
gracious hand of his God was upon him.
Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to
enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem,
according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;
You are sent by the king and his seven counselors to
evaluate Judah and Jerusalem
according to the Law of your God, which is in your hand.
And
whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.
You and your brothers may do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God.
And thou,
Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.
And you,
Ezra,
according to the wisdom of your God which you possess, are to
appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the people west of the Euphrates—all who know the laws of your God. And you are to teach these laws to
anyone who does not know them.
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing
according to their abominations, even of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the surrounding peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them,
according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that
tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done
according to the law.
So now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children,
according to the counsel of my lord and of those who
tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done
according to the Law.
Then arose
Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do
according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had been said. And they took the oath.
And that
whosoever would not come within three days,
according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be
forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.
Whoever failed to appear within three days would
forfeit all his property,
according to the counsel of the leaders and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me,
according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
“We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
Also I
shook my
lap, and said, So God
shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he
shaken out, and
emptied. And all the congregation said,
Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did
according to this promise.
I also
shook out the folds of my
robe and said, “May God likewise
shake out of His house and possession every man who does not keep this promise. May such a man be
shaken out and have nothing!” The whole assembly said, “
Amen,” and they praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.
Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
Remember me
favorably, O my God, for all that I have done for this people.
Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to
rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king,
according to these words.
that read: “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem agrees—that you and the Jews are
plotting to revolt, and this is why you are building the wall.
According to these reports, you are to become their king,
