And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark—male and female—to keep them alive with you.
Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every
creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them
alive.
Two of every kind of bird and animal and
crawling creature will come to you to be kept
alive.
Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
and seven pairs of every kind of bird of the air, male and female, to preserve their offspring on the face of all the earth.
And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the
creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and
Noah only remained
alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
And every living thing on the face of the earth was destroyed—man and
livestock,
crawling creatures and birds of the air; they were
blotted out from the earth, and only
Noah and those with him in the ark remained.
Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.
But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.
And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet
alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the
tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”
And he asked them of their
welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet
alive?
He asked if they were well, and then he asked, “How is your elderly father you told me about? Is he still alive?”

alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made

terrified in his presence.
And told him, saying, Joseph is yet
alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart

stunned, for he did not believe them.

And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to
accomplish a day like this—to preserve the lives of many people.
But the
midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children
alive.
The
midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had
instructed; they let the boys live.
And the king of Egypt called for the
midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children
alive?
So the king of Egypt summoned the
midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.
Then Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, “Please let me return to my brothers in Egypt to see if they are still alive.” “Go in peace,” Jethro replied.
If the
theft be certainly found in his hand
alive, whether it be ox, or
ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
If what was
stolen is actually found
alive in his possession—whether ox or
donkey or sheep—he must pay back double.
And Moses
diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was
angry with
Eleazar and
Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left
alive, saying,
Later, Moses searched carefully for the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up. He was
angry with
Eleazar and
Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked,
Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be
cleansed two birds
alive and clean, and
cedar wood, and scarlet, and
hyssop:
the priest shall order that two live clean birds,
cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and
hyssop be brought for the one to be
cleansed.
But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the
scapegoat, shall be presented
alive before the LORD, to make an
atonement with him, and to let him go for a
scapegoat into the wilderness.
But the goat chosen by lot as the
scapegoat shall be presented
alive before the LORD to make
atonement by sending it into the wilderness as the
scapegoat.
Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to
vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.
You must not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is still alive.
And upon them that are left
alive of you I will send a
faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a
shaken leaf shall
chase them; and they shall
flee, as
fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
As for those of you who
survive, I will send a
faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that even the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. And they will
flee as one flees the sword, and fall when no one pursues them.
But Joshua the son of
Nun, and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
Of those men who had gone to
spy out the land, only Joshua son of
Nun and
Caleb son of Jephunneh remained
alive.
But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and
swallow them up, with all that
appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have
provoked the LORD.
But if the LORD brings about something
unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and
swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down
alive into
Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
They, and all that
appertained to them, went down
alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
They went down
alive into
Sheol with all they owned. The earth closed over them, and they
vanished from the assembly.
So they
smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him
alive: and they possessed his land.
So they struck down
Og, along with his sons and his whole army, until no
remnant was left. And they took possession of his land.
And the
ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her
alive.
The
donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away, then by now I would surely have killed you and let her live.”
And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
“Have you
spared all the women?” he asked them.
But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep
alive for
yourselves.
But ye that did
cleave unto the LORD your God are
alive every one of you this day.
But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive to this day, every one of you.
The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
He did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with all of us who are
alive here
today.
And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.
And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes and to fear the LORD our God, that we may always be prosperous and preserved, as we are to this day.
But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God
doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save
alive nothing that breatheth:
However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.
For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet
alive with you this day, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?
For I know how
rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are already rebelling against the LORD while I am still
alive, how much more will you
rebel after my death!
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make
alive; I wound, and I
heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.
See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I
heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
that you will
spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will deliver us from death.”
And Joshua saved
Rahab the
harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she
hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to
spy out
Jericho.
And Joshua
spared Rahab the
prostitute, with her father’s household and all who belonged to her, because she
hid the men Joshua had sent to
spy out
Jericho. So she has lived among the Israelites to this day.
And the king of
Ai they took
alive, and brought him to Joshua.
But they took the king of
Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.
And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me
alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel
wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day
fourscore and five years old.
Now behold, as the LORD promised, He has kept me
alive these forty-five years since He spoke this word to Moses, while Israel
wandered in the wilderness. So here I am
today, eighty-five years old,
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still
alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them
alive, I would not
slay you.
“They were my brothers,”
Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.”
And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved
alive of the women of
Jabesh-
gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
And at that time the Benjamites returned and were given the women who were
spared from
Jabesh-
gilead. But there were not enough women for all of them.
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to
Sheol and raises up.
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and
spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near
hither unto God.
And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and
plunder them until
dawn, leaving no man
alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the priest said, “We must
consult God here.”
And he took
Agag the king of the
Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
He captured
Agag king of Amalek
alive, but devoted all the others to destruction with the sword.
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left
alive by morning light.”
And David
smote the land, and left neither man nor woman
alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the
asses, and the camels, and the
apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.
Whenever David attacked a territory, he did not leave a man or woman
alive, but he took the flocks and herds, the
donkeys, camels, and clothing. Then he would return to Achish,
And David saved neither man nor woman
alive, to bring
tidings to
Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
David did not leave a man or woman
alive to be brought to
Gath, for he said, “Otherwise they will report us, saying, ‘This is what David did.’” And this was David’s custom the whole time he lived in
Philistine territory.
And he
smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep
alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down on the ground, and measured them off with a cord. He measured off with two lengths those to be put to death, and with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet
alive, we spake unto him, and he would not
hearken unto our voice: how will he then
vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
On the seventh day the child died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Look, while the child was
alive, we spoke to him, and he would not
listen to us. So how can we tell him the child is dead? He may even
harm himself.”
Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou
didst fast and
weep for the child, while it was
alive; but when the child was dead, thou
didst rise and eat bread.
“What is this you have done?” his servants asked. “While the child was
alive, you fasted and
wept, but when he died, you got up and
ate.”
And he said, While the child was yet
alive, I fasted and
wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be
gracious to me, that the child may live?
David answered, “While the child was
alive, I fasted and
wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be
gracious to me and let him live.’
Then said
Joab, I may not
tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet
alive in the midst of the oak.
But
Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom while he was still
alive in the oak tree.
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were
alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you!
Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith,
Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
Then the king replied, “This woman says, ‘My son is alive and yours is dead,’ but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her
bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise
slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
Then the woman whose son was
alive spoke to the king because she
yearned with
compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living
baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
And
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and
Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Then
Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your son is
alive,”
Elijah declared.
And
Ahab said unto
Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all
brooks:
peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules
alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
Then
Ahab said to
Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules
alive so that we will not have to destroy any
livestock.”
And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
“If they have marched out in peace,” he said, “take them alive. Even if they have marched out for war, take them alive.”
So they
girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-
hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet
alive? he is my brother.
So with
sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-
hadad says, ‘Please
spare my life.’” And the king answered, “Is he still
alive? He is my brother.”
And it came to pass, when
Jezebel heard that
Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that
Jezebel said to
Ahab, Arise, take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for
Naboth is not
alive, but dead.
When
Jezebel heard that
Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to
Ahab, “Get up and take possession of the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite, who refused to give it to you for silver. For
Naboth is no longer
alive, but dead.”
And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make
alive, that this man
doth send unto me to recover a man of his
leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he
tore his clothes and asked, “Am I God, killing and giving life, that this man expects me to cure a
leper? Surely you can see that he is seeking a quarrel with me!”
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”
And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them
alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them
alive and enter the city.’”
And he said, Take them
alive. And they took them
alive, and
slew them at the pit of the shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
Then
Jehu ordered, “Take them
alive.” So his men took them
alive, then slaughtered them at the well of Beth-
eked—forty-two men. He
spared none of them.
And other ten thousand left
alive did the children of Judah carry away
captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
and the army of Judah also captured 10,000 men
alive. They took them to the top of a
cliff and threw them down so that all were
dashed to pieces.
For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.
Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous. We must get grain in order to eat and stay alive.”
He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.
He does not keep the wicked
alive, but He grants justice to the
afflicted.
All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will
kneel before Him— even those unable to preserve their lives.
O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
O LORD, You pulled me up from
Sheol; You
spared me from descending into the Pit.
To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.
The LORD will preserve him, and keep him
alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou
wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will
bless him in the land and refuse to surrender him to the will of his foes.
Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into
hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to
Sheol alive, for evil is with them in their homes.
when their anger
flared against us, then they would have
swallowed us
alive,
And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous before You.
Let us
swallow them up
alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
let us
swallow them
alive like
Sheol, and whole like those descending into the Pit.
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
So I
admired the dead, who had already died, above the living, who are still
alive.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are
alive, and afterward they join the dead.
Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.
Abandon your orphans; I will preserve their lives. Let your widows trust in Me.”
All her people
sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to
relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become
vile.
All her people
groan as they search for bread. They have traded their treasures for food to keep themselves
alive. Look, O LORD, and consider, for I have become
despised.
I called for my lovers, but they
deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to
relieve their souls.
I called out to my lovers, but they have
betrayed me. My priests and elders perished in the city while they searched for food to keep themselves
alive.
They have cut off my life in the
dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.
For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet
alive: for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any
strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.
The seller will surely not recover what he sold while both remain
alive. For the vision concerning the whole multitude will not be
revoked, and because of their iniquity, not one of them will preserve his life.
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Woe to the women that
sew pillows to all armholes, and make
kerchiefs upon the head of every
stature to
hunt souls! Will ye
hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls
alive that come unto you?
and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:
Woe to the women who
sew magic charms on their wrists and make veils for the heads of people of every height, in order to
ensnare their souls. Will you
ensnare the souls of My people but preserve your own?
And will ye
pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to
slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls
alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?
You have
profaned Me among My people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to My people who would
listen, you have killed those who should not have died and
spared those who should not have lived.
Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.
And to me this
mystery has been revealed, not because I have more wisdom than any man
alive, but in order that the interpretation might be made known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.
And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages,
trembled and feared before him: whom he would he
slew; and whom he would he kept
alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
Because of the greatness that He bestowed on him, the people of every nation and language
trembled in fear before him. He killed whom he wished and kept
alive whom he wished; he
exalted whom he wished and humbled whom he wished.
And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet
prophesy, then his father and his mother that
begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that
begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.
And if
anyone still prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall not remain
alive, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’ When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will
pierce him through.
Saying, Sir, we remember that that
deceiver said, while he was yet
alive, After three days I will rise again.
“Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was
alive that
deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’
And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.
And when they heard that Jesus was alive and she had seen Him, they did not believe it.
For this my son was dead, and is
alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be
merry.
For this son of mine was dead and is
alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to
celebrate.
It was meet that we should make
merry, and be
glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is
alive again; and was lost, and is found.
But it was fitting to
celebrate and be
glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is
alive again; he was lost and is found.’”
For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
