And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness.
Then Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the Tent of the Testimony.
And it came to pass, that on the
morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness;
and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was
budded,
and brought forth buds,
and bloomed blossoms,
and yielded almonds.
The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony
and saw that Aaron’s staff, representing the house of Levi, had
sprouted, put forth buds,
blossomed,
and produced almonds.
And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD’s presence to all the Israelites. They saw them, and each man took his own staff.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron’s rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a
token against the rebels;
and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.
The LORD said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s staff back in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign for the
rebellious, so that you may put an end to their
grumbling against Me, lest they die.”
And Moses did so: as the LORD commanded him, so did he.
So Moses did as the LORD had commanded him.
And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.
Then the Israelites declared to Moses, “Look, we are perishing! We are lost; we are all lost!
And the LORD said unto Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy father’s house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.
So the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father’s house must bear the iniquity involving the sanctuary. And you and your sons alone must bear the iniquity involving your priesthood.
And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness.
But bring with you also your brothers from the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may join you and assist you and your sons before the Tent of the Testimony.
And they shall keep thy charge,
and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come
nigh the vessels of the sanctuary
and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.
And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.
And they shall be joined unto thee,
and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle:
and a stranger shall not come
nigh unto you.
They are to join you and attend to the duties of the Tent of Meeting, doing all the work at the Tent; but no outsider may come near you.
And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.
And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary and of the altar, so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again.
And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Behold, I Myself have selected your fellow Levites from the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD to perform the service for the Tent of Meeting.
Therefore thou
and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest’s office for every thing of the altar,
and within the
vail;
and ye shall serve: I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift:
and the stranger that cometh
nigh shall be put to death.
But only you
and your sons shall attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the altar
and what is inside the
veil,
and you are to perform that service. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift, but any outsider who comes near the sanctuary must be put to death.”
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine
heave offerings of all the
hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the
anointing,
and to thy sons, by an
ordinance for ever.
Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Behold, I have put you in charge of My offerings. As for all the sacred offerings of the Israelites, I have given them to you and your sons as a portion and a permanent statute.
This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every
oblation of theirs, every meat offering of theirs,
and every sin offering of theirs,
and every
trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render unto me, shall be most holy for thee
and for thy sons.
A portion of the most holy offerings reserved from the fire will be yours. From all the offerings they render to Me as most holy offerings, whether grain offerings or sin offerings or guilt offerings, that part belongs to you and your sons.
In the most holy place shalt thou eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be holy unto thee.
You are to eat it as a most holy offering, and every male may eat it. You shall regard it as holy.
And this is thine; the
heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee,
and to thy sons
and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it.
And this is yours as well: the offering of their gifts, along with all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I have given this to you
and your sons
and daughters as a permanent statute. Every
ceremonially clean person in your household may eat it.
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee.
I give you all the freshest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain that the Israelites give to the LORD as their firstfruits.
And whatsoever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto the LORD, shall be thine; every one that is clean in thine house shall eat of it.
The firstfruits of everything in their land that they bring to the LORD will belong to you. Every
ceremonially clean person in your household may eat them.
Every thing that openeth the
matrix in all flesh, which they bring unto the LORD, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine: nevertheless the
firstborn of man shalt thou surely
redeem,
and the
firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou
redeem.
The
firstborn of every
womb, whether man or beast, that is offered to the LORD belongs to you. But you must surely
redeem every
firstborn son
and every
firstborn male of unclean animals.
And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou
redeem, according to thine
estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the
shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.
You are to pay the
redemption price for a month-old male according to your
valuation: five shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary
shekel, which is twenty gerahs.
But the
firstling of a cow, or the
firstling of a sheep, or the
firstling of a goat, thou shalt not
redeem; they are holy: thou shalt
sprinkle their blood upon the altar,
and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
But you must not
redeem the
firstborn of an ox, a sheep, or a goat; they are holy. You are to
sprinkle their blood on the altar
and burn their fat as an offering made by fire, a pleasing
aroma to the LORD.
And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are thine.
And their meat belongs to you, just as the breast
and right
thigh of the wave offering belong to you.
All the
heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee,
and thy sons
and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee
and to thy seed with thee.
All the holy offerings that the Israelites present to the LORD I give to you and to your sons and daughters as a permanent statute. It is a permanent covenant of salt before the LORD for you and your offspring.”
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.
Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.
And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Behold, I have given to the Levites all the
tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the service of the Tent of Meeting.
Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come
nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin,
and die.
No longer may the Israelites come near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will
incur guilt
and die.
But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Thus speak unto the Levites,
and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the
tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an
heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the
tithe.
“Speak to the Levites
and tell them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the
tithe that I have given you as your inheritance, you must present part of it as an offering to the LORD—a
tithe of the
tithe.
And this your
heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor,
and as the
fulness of the winepress.
Your offering will be reckoned to you as grain from the
threshing floor or juice from the winepress.
Thus ye also shall offer an
heave offering unto the LORD of all your
tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel;
and ye shall give thereof the LORD’S
heave offering to Aaron the priest.
So you are to present an offering to the LORD from all the
tithes you receive from the Israelites,
and from these you are to give the LORD’s offering to Aaron the priest.
Therefore thou shalt say unto them, When ye have
heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor,
and as the increase of the winepress.
Therefore say to the Levites, ‘When you have presented the best part, it will be reckoned to you as the produce of the
threshing floor or winepress.
And ye shall eat it in every place, ye and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation.
And you
and your households may eat the rest of it
anywhere; it is the compensation for your work at the Tent of Meeting.
And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, when ye have
heaved from it the best of it: neither shall ye
pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest ye die.
Once you have presented the best part of it, you will not
incur guilt because of it. But you must not
defile the sacred offerings of the Israelites, or else you will die.’”
And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
This is the
ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red
heifer without spot, wherein is no
blemish,
and upon which never came yoke:
“This is the statute of the law that the LORD has commanded:
Instruct the Israelites to bring you an
unblemished red
heifer that has no defect
and has never been placed under a yoke.
And ye shall give her unto
Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp,
and one shall
slay her before his face:
Give it to
Eleazar the priest,
and he will have it brought outside the camp
and slaughtered in his presence.
And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger,
and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times:
Eleazar the priest is to take some of its blood on his finger
and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the Tent of Meeting.
And one shall burn the
heifer in his sight; her skin,
and her flesh,
and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:
Then the
heifer must be burned in his sight. Its hide, its flesh,
and its blood are to be burned, along with its dung.
And the priest shall take
cedar wood,
and hyssop,
and scarlet,
and cast it into the midst of the burning of the
heifer.
Then the priest shall wash his clothes,
and he shall
bathe his flesh in water,
and afterward he shall come into the camp,
and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
Then the priest must wash his clothes
and bathe his body in water; after that he may enter the camp, but he will be
ceremonially unclean until evening.
And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water,
and bathe his flesh in water,
and shall be unclean until the even.
The one who burned the
heifer must also wash his clothes
and bathe his body in water,
and he too will be
ceremonially unclean until evening.
And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the
heifer,
and lay them up without the camp in a clean place,
and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a
purification for sin.
And he that gathereth the ashes of the
heifer shall wash his clothes,
and be unclean until the even:
and it shall be unto the children of Israel,
and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
The man who has gathered up the ashes of the
heifer must also wash his clothes,
and he will be
ceremonially unclean until evening. This is a permanent statute for the Israelites
and for the foreigner residing among them.
He shall
purify himself with it on the third day,
and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he
purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.
He must
purify himself with the water on the third day
and on the seventh day; then he will be clean. But if he does not
purify himself on the third
and seventh days, he will not be clean.
Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead,
and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD;
and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not
sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
Anyone who touches a human
corpse and fails to
purify himself defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person must be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean, because the water of
purification has not been
sprinkled on him,
and his uncleanness is still on him.
This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
This is the law when a person dies in a tent:
Everyone who enters the tent
and everyone already in the tent will be unclean for seven days,
And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean.
and any open container without a
lid fastened on it is unclean.
And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
Anyone in the open field who touches someone who has been killed by the sword or has died of natural causes, or
anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.
And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt
heifer of
purification for sin,
and running water shall be put
thereto in a vessel:
For the
purification of the unclean person, take some of the ashes of the burnt sin offering, put them in a
jar,
and pour fresh water over them.
And a clean person shall take
hyssop,
and dip it in the water,
and sprinkle it upon the tent,
and upon all the vessels,
and upon the persons that were there,
and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave:
Then a man who is
ceremonially clean is to take some
hyssop, dip it in the water,
and sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings,
and the people who were there. He is also to
sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, or a person who has died or been slain.
And the clean person shall
sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day,
and on the seventh day:
and on the seventh day he shall
purify himself,
and wash his clothes,
and bathe himself in water,
and shall be clean at even.
The man who is
ceremonially clean is to
sprinkle the unclean person on the third day
and on the seventh day. After he purifies the unclean person on the seventh day, the one being
cleansed must wash his clothes
and bathe in water,
and that evening he will be clean.
But the man that shall be unclean,
and shall not
purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been
sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
But if a person who is unclean does not
purify himself, he will be cut off from the assembly, because he has
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of
purification has not been
sprinkled on him; he is unclean.
And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even.
This is a permanent statute for the people: The one who sprinkles the water of
purification must wash his clothes,
and whoever touches the water of
purification will be unclean until evening.
And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean;
and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.
Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean,
and anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening.”
Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month:
and the people abode in Kadesh;
and Miriam died there,
and was buried there.
In the first month, the whole congregation of Israel entered the Wilderness of Zin
and stayed in Kadesh. There
Miriam died
and was buried.
And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
Now there was no water for the congregation, so they gathered against Moses and Aaron.
And the people
chode with Moses,
and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
The people quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had perished with our brothers before the LORD!
And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness for us
and our
livestock to die here?
And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
Why have you led us up out of Egypt to bring us to this
wretched place? It is not a place of grain, figs, vines, or pomegranates—
and there is no water to drink!”
And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. They fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
And the LORD said to Moses,
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
“Take the staff
and assemble the congregation. You
and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch,
and it will pour out its water. You will bring out water from the rock
and provide drink for the congregation
and their
livestock.”
And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he had been commanded.
And Moses
and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock,
and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we
fetch you water out of this rock?
Then Moses
and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock,
and Moses said to them, “
Listen now, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”
And Moses lifted up his hand,
and with his rod he
smote the rock twice:
and the water came out abundantly,
and the congregation
drank,
and their beasts also.
Then Moses raised his hand
and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water
gushed out,
and the congregation
and their
livestock were able to drink.
And the LORD spake unto Moses
and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to
sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
But the LORD said to Moses
and Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to show My
holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”
This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel
strove with the LORD,
and he was
sanctified in them.
These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD,
and He showed His
holiness among them.
And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of
Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the
travail that hath
befallen us:
From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to tell the king of
Edom, “This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the
hardship that has
befallen us,
How our fathers went down into Egypt,
and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time;
and the Egyptians
vexed us,
and our fathers:
how our fathers went down to Egypt, where we lived many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,
And when we
cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice,
and sent an angel,
and hath brought us forth out of Egypt:
and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the
uttermost of thy border:
and when we
cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice, sent an angel,
and brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.
And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
But
Edom answered, “You may not travel through our land, or we will come out
and confront you with the sword.”
And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
“We will stay on the main road,” the Israelites replied, “and if we or our herds drink your water, we will pay for it. There will be no problem; only let us pass through on foot.”
And he said, Thou shalt not go through.
And Edom came out against him with much people,
and with a strong hand.
But
Edom insisted, “You may not pass through.”
And they came out to
confront the Israelites with a large army
and a strong hand.
Thus
Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
So
Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through their territory,
and Israel turned away from them.
And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh,
and came unto mount
Hor.
After they had set out from Kadesh, the whole congregation of Israel came to Mount
Hor.
And the LORD spake unto Moses
and Aaron in mount
Hor, by the coast of the land of
Edom, saying,
And at Mount
Hor, near the border of the land of
Edom, the LORD said to Moses
and Aaron,
Take Aaron
and Eleazar his son,
and bring them up unto mount
Hor:
Take Aaron
and his son
Eleazar and bring them up Mount
Hor.
And strip Aaron of his garments,
and put them upon
Eleazar his son:
and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people,
and shall die there.
Remove Aaron’s priestly garments
and put them on his son
Eleazar. Aaron will be gathered to his people
and will die there.”
And Moses did as the LORD commanded:
and they went up into mount
Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
So Moses did as the LORD had commanded,
and they
climbed Mount
Hor in the sight of the whole congregation.
And Moses
stripped Aaron of his garments,
and put them upon
Eleazar his son;
and Aaron died there in the top of the mount:
and Moses
and Eleazar came down from the mount.
After Moses had removed Aaron’s garments
and put them on his son
Eleazar, Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses
and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they
mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
When the whole congregation saw that Aaron had died, the entire house of Israel
mourned for him thirty days.
And when king
Arad the
Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the
spies; then he fought against Israel,
and took some of them prisoners.
When the
Canaanite king of
Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked Israel
and captured some prisoners.
And Israel
vowed a
vow unto the LORD,
and said, If thou
wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
So Israel made a
vow to the LORD: “If You will deliver this people into our hands, we will
devote their cities to destruction.”
And the LORD
hearkened to the voice of Israel,
and delivered up the
Canaanites;
and they utterly destroyed them
and their cities:
and he called the name of the place Hormah.
And the LORD heard Israel’s
plea and delivered up the
Canaanites. Israel devoted them
and their cities to destruction; so they named the place Hormah.
And they journeyed from mount
Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of
Edom:
and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
Then they set out from Mount
Hor along the route to the Red Sea, in order to bypass the land of
Edom. But the people grew impatient on the journey
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
and spoke against God
and against Moses: “Why have you led us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water,
and we
detest this
wretched food!”
And the LORD sent
fiery serpents among the people,
and they
bit the people;
and much people of Israel died.
So the LORD sent
venomous snakes among the people,
and many of the Israelites were
bitten and died.
Therefore the people came to Moses,
and said, We have
sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD,
and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.
And Moses prayed for the people.
Then the people came to Moses
and said, “We have
sinned by speaking against the LORD
and against you.
Intercede with the LORD so He will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses
interceded for the people.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a
fiery serpent,
and set it upon a pole:
and it shall come to pass, that every one that is
bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a
fiery serpent
and mount it on a pole. When
anyone who is
bitten looks at it, he will live.”
And Moses made a serpent of brass,
and put it upon a pole,
and it came to pass, that if a serpent had
bitten any man, when he
beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
So Moses made a bronze
snake and mounted it on a pole. If
anyone who was
bitten looked at the bronze
snake, he would live.
And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.
Then the Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.
And they journeyed from Oboth,
and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the
sunrising.
They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim in the wilderness opposite Moab to the east.
From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.
From there they set out and camped in the Valley of Zered.
From thence they removed,
and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the
Amorites: for
Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab
and the
Amorites.
From there they moved on
and camped on the other side of the
Arnon, in the wilderness that extends into the Amorite territory. Now the
Arnon is the border between the Moabites
and the
Amorites.
Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea,
and in the
brooks of
Arnon,
Therefore it is stated in the Book of the Wars of the LORD: “Waheb in Suphah
and the wadis of the
Arnon,
And at the stream of the
brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar,
and lieth upon the border of Moab.
even the slopes of the wadis that extend to the site of Ar and lie along the border of Moab.”
And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well
whereof the LORD spake unto Moses, Gather the people together,
and I will give them water.
From there they went on to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people so that I may give them water.”
The princes
digged the well, the nobles of the people
digged it, by the direction of the
lawgiver, with their
staves.
And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:
The princes
dug the well; the nobles of the people hollowed it out with their scepters
and with their staffs.” From the wilderness the Israelites went on to Mattanah,
