And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every
herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
Now no
shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had
any plant of the field
sprouted; for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to
cultivate the ground.
Now the serpent was more
subtil than
any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman,
Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Now the serpent was more
crafty than
any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from
any tree in the garden?’”
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore
whosoever slayeth
Cain,
vengeance shall be taken on him
sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon
Cain, lest
any finding him should kill him.
And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the
dove; which returned not again unto him
any more.
And
Noah waited seven more days and sent out the
dove again, but this time she did not return to him.
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again
curse the ground
any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again
smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
When the LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I
curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
And surely I will require the life of
any man or beast by whose hand your
lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting from
anyone who takes the life of his fellow man:
And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
And I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take
any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made
Abram rich:
that I will not accept even a thread, or a
strap of a
sandal, or
anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I have made
Abram rich.’
Neither shall thy name
any more be called
Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
No longer will you be called
Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
And he that is eight days old shall be
circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of
any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
Generation after generation, every male must be
circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased from a foreigner—even those who are not your offspring.
But if
any male is not
circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
Is
any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and
Sarah shall have a son.
Is
anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and
Sarah will have a son.”
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never
slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do not do
anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here
any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and
whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have
anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or
anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop
anywhere on the plain!
Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do
any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do
anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou
any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do
anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And the
damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had
any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Now the
girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had not had relations with
any man. She went down to the spring, filled her
jar, and came up again.
And when
Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children,
Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
When
Rachel saw that she was not bearing
any children for Jacob, she
envied her sister. “Give me children, or I will die!” she said to Jacob.
And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me
any thing: if thou
wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
“What can I give you?”
Laban asked. “You do not need to give me
anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on
shepherding and keeping your flocks.
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is not
speckled and
spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have
any goats that are not
speckled or
spotted, or
any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered
stolen.”
And he removed that day the he goats that were
ringstraked and
spotted, and all the she goats that were
speckled and
spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
That very day
Laban removed all the
streaked or
spotted male goats and every
speckled or
spotted female goat—every one that had
any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.
And
Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet
any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?
And
Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we have
any portion or inheritance left in our father’s house?
And God came to
Laban the
Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take
heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
But that night God came to
Laban the
Aramean in a dream and
warned him, “Be careful not to say
anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”
It is in the power of my hand to do you
hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me
yesternight, saying, Take thou
heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
I have power to do you great
harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say
anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’
With
whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren
discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that
Rachel had
stolen them.
If you find your gods with
anyone here, he shall not live! In the presence of our relatives, see for
yourself if
anything is yours, and take it back.” For Jacob did not know that
Rachel had
stolen the idols.
Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge
betwixt us both.
You have searched all my goods! Have you found anything that belongs to you? Put it here before my brothers and yours, that they may judge between the two of us.
That which was
torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand
didst thou require it, whether
stolen by day, or
stolen by night.
I did not bring you
anything torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was
stolen by day or night.
And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
And God said to him, “Though your name is Jacob, you will no longer be called Jacob. Instead, your name will be Israel.” So God named him Israel.
And these are the kings that reigned in the land of
Edom, before there reigned
any king over the children of Israel.
These are the kings who reigned in the land of
Edom before
any king reigned over the Israelites:
And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they
hated him, and could not speak
peaceably unto him.
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him more than
any of them, they
hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not
concern himself with
anything except the food he
ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master
wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not
concern himself with
anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has
withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
The keeper of the prison looked not to
any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to
prosper.
The
warden did not
concern himself with
anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find
anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of God abides?”
Send one of you, and let him
fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be
any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are
spies.
Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are
spies!”
And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief
befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If
any harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to
Sheol in sorrow.”
And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s
mess was five times so much as
any of theirs. And they
drank, and were
merry with him.
When the portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times larger than
any of the others. So they feasted and
drank freely with Joseph.
With
whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s
bondmen.
If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”
The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of
Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest
any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.
the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land. They may dwell in the land of
Goshen. And if you know of
any talented men among them, put them in charge of my own
livestock.”
And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance.
Any children born to you after them shall be yours, and they shall be called by the names of their brothers in the territory they
inherit.
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Come, let us deal
shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
And he said, Draw not
nigh hither: put off thy
shoes from off thy feet, for the place
whereon thou standest is holy ground.
“Do not come
any closer,” God said. “Take off your
sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
But every woman shall
borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and
raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall
spoil the Egyptians.
Every woman shall ask her
neighbor and
any woman staying in her house for silver and gold
jewelry and clothing, and you will put them on your sons and daughters. So you will
plunder the Egyptians.”
For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and You have not delivered Your people in any way.”
And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also.
Instead, Pharaoh turned around, went into his palace, and did not take any of this to heart.
And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of
flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to
morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal
deceitfully any more in not
letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.
“As soon as I leave you,” Moses said, “I will pray to the LORD, so that
tomorrow the swarms of
flies will depart from Pharaoh and his officials and his people. But Pharaoh must not act
deceitfully again by refusing to let the people go and sacrifice to the LORD.”
Intreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and
hail; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer.
Pray to the LORD, for there has been enough of God’s
thunder and
hail. I will let you go; you do not need to stay
any longer.”
And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; and the
thunder shall cease, neither shall there be
any more
hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the LORD’S.
Moses said to him, “When I have left the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD. The
thunder will cease, and there will be no more
hail, so that you may know that the earth is the LORD’s.
For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was
darkened; and they did eat every
herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the
hail had left: and there remained not
any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
They covered the face of all the land until it was black, and they consumed all the plants on the ground and all the fruit on the trees that the
hail had left behind. Nothing green was left on
any tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one
locust in all the coasts of Egypt.
And the LORD changed the wind to a very strong west wind that carried off the locusts and
blew them into the Red Sea. Not a single
locust remained
anywhere in Egypt.
They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
No one could see
anyone else, and for three days no one left his place. Yet all the Israelites had light in their dwellings.
And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
Then a great cry will go out over all the land of Egypt. Such an outcry has never been heard before and will never be heard again.
But against
any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD
doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.
But among all the Israelites, not even a dog will
snarl at man or beast.’ Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.
Eat not of it raw, nor
sodden at all with water, but
roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the
purtenance thereof.
Do not eat
any of the meat raw or
cooked in boiling water, but only
roasted over the fire—its head and legs and inner parts.
And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
Do not leave any of it until morning; before the morning you must burn up any part that is left over.
Seven days shall ye eat
unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away
leaven out of your houses: for
whosoever eateth
leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
For seven days you must eat
unleavened bread. On the first day you are to remove the
leaven from your houses.
Whoever eats
anything leavened from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel.
And in the first day there shall be an holy
convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy
convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly, and another on the seventh day. You must not do any work on those days, except to prepare the meals—that is all you may do.
Seven days shall there be no
leaven found in your houses: for
whosoever eateth that which is
leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
For seven days there must be no
leaven found in your houses. If
anyone eats something
leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.
And they
baked unleavened cakes of the
dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not
leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not
tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves
any victual.
Since their
dough had no
leaven, the people
baked what they had brought out of Egypt into
unleavened loaves. For when they had been driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared
any provisions for themselves.
But every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast
circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.
But
any slave who has been purchased may eat of it, after you have
circumcised him.
In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.
It must be eaten inside one house. You are not to take any of the meat outside the house, and you may not break any of the bones.
Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no
leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be
leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
And said, If thou
wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and
wilt do that which is right in his sight, and
wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
saying, “If you will
listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you
any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.
Then Moses said to them, “No one may keep any of it until morning.”
And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses
bade: and it did not
stink, neither was there
any worm therein.
So they set it aside until morning as Moses had commanded, and it did not smell or contain any maggots.
And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
“Eat it
today,” Moses said, “because
today is a Sabbath to the LORD.
Today you will not find
anything in the field.
And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
Yet on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they did not find anything.
And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for
thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
Have these men judge the people at all times. Then they can bring you
any major issue, but all minor cases they can judge on their own, so that your load may be
lightened as they share it with you.
And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
And they judged the people at all times; they would bring the difficult cases to Moses, but any minor issue they would judge themselves.
Thou shalt not make unto thee
any graven image, or
any likeness of
any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
You shall not make for
yourself an
idol in the form of
anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave
anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do
any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy
manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do
any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your
manservant or
maidservant or
livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates.
Thou shalt not
covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not
covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his
manservant, nor his
maidservant, nor his ox, nor his
ass, nor
any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.
You are not to make
any gods
alongside Me; you are not to make for
yourselves gods of silver or gold.
If thou
buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
If you
buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free without paying
anything.
And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
Anyone who curses his father or mother must surely be put to death.
And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
But if a serious injury results, then you must require a life for a life—
For all manner of
trespass, whether it be for ox, for
ass, for sheep, for
raiment, or for
any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall
condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
In all cases of
illegal possession of an ox, a
donkey, a sheep, a garment, or
any lost
item that someone claims, ‘This is mine,’ both parties shall bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges find guilty must pay back double to his
neighbor.
If a man deliver unto his neighbour an
ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or
any beast, to keep; and it die, or be
hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:
If a man gives a
donkey, an ox, a sheep, or
any other animal to be cared for by his
neighbor, but it dies or is injured or
stolen while no one is watching,
He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
If
anyone sacrifices to
any god other than the LORD alone, he must be set apart for destruction.
Ye shall not
afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
You must not mistreat
any widow or
orphan.
If thou
afflict them in
any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;
If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to Me in distress, I will surely hear their cry.
If thou
lend money to
any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an
usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him
usury.
If you
lend money to one of My people among you who is poor, you must not act as a
creditor to him; you are not to charge him interest.
And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat
any flesh that is
torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.
You are to be My holy people. You must not eat the meat of a
mauled animal found in the field; you are to throw it to the dogs.
Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with
leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.
You must not offer the blood of My sacrifices with
anything leavened, nor may the fat of My feast remain until morning.
And he said unto the elders,
Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if
any man have
any matters to do, let him come unto them.
And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are here with you.
Whoever has a dispute can go to them.”
And if ought of the flesh of the consecrations, or of the bread, remain unto the morning, then thou shalt burn the remainder with fire: it shall not be eaten, because it is holy.
And if
any of the meat of
ordination or
any bread is left until the morning, you are to burn up the remainder. It must not be eaten, because it is sacred.
Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.
It must not be used to
anoint an ordinary man, and you must not make
anything like it with the same formula. It is holy, and it must be holy to you.
Whosoever compoundeth
any like it, or
whosoever putteth
any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.
Anyone who mixes
perfume like it or puts it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.’”
Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell
thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.
Anyone who makes something like it to enjoy its
fragrance shall be cut off from his people.”
Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for
whosoever doeth
any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you.
Anyone who profanes it must surely be put to death.
Whoever does
any work on that day must be cut off from among his people.
Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD:
whosoever doeth
any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
For six days work may be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD.
Whoever does
any work on the Sabbath day must surely be put to death.
And I said unto them,
Whosoever hath
any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this
calf.
So I said to them, ‘
Whoever has gold, let him take it off,’ and they gave it to me. And when I threw it into the fire, out came this
calf!”
And when the people heard these evil
tidings, they
mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp,
afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it at a distance outside the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting, and
anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
No one may go up with you; in fact, no one may be seen
anywhere on the mountain—not even the flocks or herds may
