And God blessed the seventh day, and
sanctified it:
because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Then God blessed the seventh day and
sanctified it,
because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”
And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid,
because I was naked; and I
hid myself.
“I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid
because I was naked; so I
hid myself.”
And the LORD God said unto the serpent,
Because thou hast done this, thou art
cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy
belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
So the LORD God said to the serpent: “
Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all
livestock and every beast of the field! On your
belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
And unto Adam he said,
Because thou hast
hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And to Adam He said: “
Because you have
listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat,
cursed is the ground
because of you; through
toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
In the
sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it
wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
By the
sweat of your
brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—
because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
And Adam called his wife’s name
Eve;
because she was the mother of all living.
And Adam named his wife
Eve,
because she would be the mother of all the living.

Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more,
because God had taken him away.
And he called his name
Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and
toil of our hands,
because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.
And he named him
Noah, saying, “May this one comfort us in the labor and
toil of our hands caused by the ground that the LORD has
cursed.”
And God said unto
Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
Then God said to
Noah, “The end of all living creatures has come before Me,
because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.
And the LORD said unto
Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
Then the LORD said to
Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your family,
because I have found you righteous in this generation.
And
Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark,
because of the waters of the flood.
And
Noah and his wife, with his sons and their wives, entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.
But the
dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
But the
dove found no place to rest her foot, and she returned to him in the ark,
because the waters were still covering the surface of all the earth. So he reached out his hand and brought her back inside the ark.
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again
curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again
smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
When the LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I
curse the ground
because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.
Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided, and his brother was named Joktan.
Therefore is the name of it called
Babel;
because the LORD did there
confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD
scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
That is why it is called
Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
And there was a famine in the land: and
Abram went down into Egypt to
sojourn there; for the famine was
grievous in the land.
Now there was a famine in the land. So
Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while
because the famine was severe.
Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
Please say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake, and on account of you my life will be
spared.”
And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues
because of Sarai
Abram’s wife.

afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues
because of
Abram’s wife Sarai.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name
Ishmael;
because the LORD hath heard thy
affliction.
The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him
Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of
affliction.
And the LORD said,
Because the cry of
Sodom and
Gomorrah is great, and
because their sin is very
grievous;
For we will destroy this place,
because the cry of them is
waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being
merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city,
because of the LORD’s
compassion for them.
But God came to
Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.
One night, however, God came to
Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are as good as dead
because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”
And Abraham said,
Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will
slay me for my wife’s sake.
Abraham replied, “I thought to myself, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place. They will kill me on account of my wife.’
For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of
Abimelech,
because of
Sarah Abraham’s wife.
for on account of Abraham’s wife
Sarah, the LORD had completely closed all the wombs in
Abimelech’s household.
And the thing was very
grievous in Abraham’s sight
because of his son.
Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly
because it concerned his son
Ishmael.
And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be
grievous in thy sight
because of the
lad, and
because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And also of the son of the
bondwoman will I make a nation,
because he is thy seed.
But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
And Abraham reproved
Abimelech because of a well of water, which
Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.
Wherefore he called that place Beer-
sheba;
because there they
sware both of them.
So that place was called
Beersheba,
because it was there that the two of them
swore an oath.
And said, By myself have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for
because thou hast done this thing, and hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son:
saying, “By Myself I have
sworn, declares the LORD, that
because you have done this and have not
withheld your only son,
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife,
because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and
Rebekah his wife conceived.
Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife,
because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife
Rebekah conceived.
Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved
Esau; but
Rebekah loved Jacob.
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
because Abraham
listened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for
Rebekah;
because she was fair to look upon.
But when the men of that place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” since he thought to himself, “The men of this place will kill me on account of
Rebekah,
because she is so beautiful.”
And
Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a
surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him,
Because I said, Lest I die for her.
Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac replied, “
Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
And the herdmen of
Gerar did
strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek;
because they
strove with him.
But the herdsmen of
Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek,
because they
contended with him.
And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.
And he
discerned him not,
because his hands were
hairy, as his brother
Esau’s hands: so he blessed him.
Isaac did not recognize him,
because his hands were
hairy like those of his brother
Esau; so he blessed him.
And
Esau hated Jacob
because of the blessing
wherewith his father blessed him: and
Esau said in his heart, The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then will I
slay my brother Jacob.
Esau held a
grudge against Jacob
because of the blessing his father had given him. And
Esau said in his heart, “The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
And
Rebekah said to Isaac, I am
weary of my life
because of the daughters of
Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of
Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?
Then
Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am
weary of my life
because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a Hittite wife from among them, what good is my life?”
And he lighted upon a certain place, and
tarried there all night,
because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his
pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.
He looked and saw a well in the field, and near it lay three flocks of sheep, because the sheep were watered from this well. And a large stone covered the mouth of the well.
And
Laban said unto Jacob,
Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for
nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
Laban said to him, “Just
because you are my relative, should you work for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”
And Jacob served seven years for
Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
So Jacob served seven years for
Rachel, yet it seemed but a few days
because of his love for her.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said,
Because the LORD hath heard that I was
hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name
Simeon.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “
Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named him
Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And Leah said, God hath given me my
hire,
because I have given my
maiden to my husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my husband.” So she named him
Issachar.
And Leah said, God hath
endued me with a good
dowry; now will my husband dwell with me,
because I have born him six sons: and she called his name
Zebulun.
“God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me,
because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him
Zebulun.
And
Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes,
tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
But
Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by
divination that the LORD has blessed me
because of you.”
And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone,
because thou
sore longedst after thy father’s house, yet wherefore hast thou
stolen my gods?
Now you have gone off
because you long for your father’s house. But why have you
stolen my gods?”
And Jacob answered and said to
Laban,
Because I was afraid: for I said,
Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
“I was afraid,” Jacob answered, “for I thought you would take your daughters from me by force.
And
Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
It was also called
Mizpah,
because Laban said, “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are absent from each other.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.”
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he
halted upon his
thigh.
The sun rose above him as he passed by Penuel, and he was
limping because of his
hip.
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the
sinew which
shrank, which is upon the hollow of the
thigh, unto this day:
because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s
thigh in the
sinew that
shrank.
Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the
tendon which is at the
socket of the
hip,
because the
socket of Jacob’s
hip was struck near that
tendon.
Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee;
because God hath dealt
graciously with me, and
because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
Please accept my gift that was brought to you,
because God has been
gracious to me and I have all I need.” So Jacob pressed him until he accepted.
And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were
grieved, and they were very
wroth,
because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter; which thing ought not to be done.
When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they returned from the field. They were filled with grief and
fury,
because Shechem had committed an
outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.
And the sons of Jacob answered
Shechem and Hamor his father
deceitfully, and said,
because he had
defiled Dinah their sister:
And the young man
deferred not to do the thing,
because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
The young man, who was the most respected of all his father’s household, did not
hesitate to
fulfill this request,
because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and
spoiled the city,
because they had
defiled their sister.
Jacob’s other sons came upon the slaughter and
looted the city,
because their sister had been
defiled.
And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
There Jacob built an altar, and he called that place El-
bethel,
because it was there that God had revealed Himself to Jacob as he fled from his brother.
For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.
For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together; the land where they stayed could not support them
because of their
livestock.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons,
because Joseph had been born to him in his old age; so he made him a
robe of many colors.
And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they
hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
“Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked. “Will you actually rule us?” So they
hated him even more
because of his dream and his statements.
When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an
harlot;
because she had covered her face.
When Judah saw her, he thought she was a
prostitute because she had covered her face.
And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Judah recognized the items and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has
withheld nothing from me except you,
because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand;
because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to
prosper.
The
warden did not
concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care,
because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
Moreover, because the dream was given to Pharaoh in two versions, the matter has been decreed by God, and He will carry it out shortly.
And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to
buy corn;
because that the famine was so
sore in all lands.
And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to
buy grain,
because the famine was severe over all the earth.
And they said one to another, We are
verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the
anguish of his soul, when he
besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished
because of our brother. We saw his
anguish when he
pleaded with us, but we would not
listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
And the men were afraid,
because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said,
Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for
bondmen, and our
asses.
But the brothers were
frightened that they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought here
because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our
donkeys.”
And Joseph made
haste; for his
bowels did
yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to
weep; and he entered into his chamber, and
wept there.
Joseph
hurried out
because he was moved to tears for his brother, and he went to a private room to
weep.
And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves:
because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an
abomination unto the Egyptians.
They separately served Joseph, his brothers, and the Egyptians. They
ate separately
because the Egyptians would not eat with the Hebrews, since that was
detestable to them.
And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph;
doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.
Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But they were unable to answer him,
because they were
terrified in his presence.
And now, do not be distressed or
angry with
yourselves that you sold me into this place,
because it was to save lives that God sent me before you.
And there will I
nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.
And there I will provide for you,
because there will be five more years of famine. Otherwise, you and your household and everything you own will come to
destitution.’
And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”
They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to
sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is
sore in the land of
Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of
Goshen.
Then they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live in the land for a time,
because there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, since the famine in the land of
Canaan has been severe. So now, please allow your servants to settle in the land of
Goshen.”
And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very
sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of
Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.
There was no food, however, in all that region,
because the famine was so severe; the lands of Egypt and
Canaan had been exhausted by the famine.
And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh’s.
So Joseph acquired for Pharaoh all the land in Egypt; the Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields because the famine was so severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s,
Now the eyes of Israel were
dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he
kissed them, and embraced them.
Now Israel’s
eyesight was poor
because of old age; he could hardly see. Joseph brought his sons to him, and his father
kissed them and embraced them.
Unstable as water, thou shalt not
excel;
because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my
couch.
But the more they
afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were
grieved because of the children of Israel.
But the more they were
oppressed, the more they multiplied and flourished; so the Egyptians came to
dread the Israelites.
And the
midwives said unto Pharaoh,
Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered
ere the
midwives come in unto them.
The
midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a
midwife arrives.”
And it came to pass,
because the
midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
And
because the
midwives feared God, He gave them families of their own.
And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the
affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the
affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out
because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings.
And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge;
because ye have made our savour to be
abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to
slay us.
“May the LORD look upon you and judge you,” the
foremen said, “for you have made us a
stench before Pharaoh and his officials; you have placed in their hand a sword to kill us!”
Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.
But the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, for because of My mighty hand he will let the people go; because of My strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”
And all the Egyptians
digged round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river.
So all the Egyptians
dug around the Nile for water to drink,
because they could not drink the water from the river.
And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses
cried unto the LORD
because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.
After Moses and Aaron had left Pharaoh, Moses
cried out to the LORD for help with the frogs that He had brought against Pharaoh.
And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the
abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the
abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?
But Moses replied, “It would not be right to do that,
because the sacrifices we offer to the LORD our God would be
detestable to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices that are
detestable before the Egyptians, will they not stone us?
And the magicians could not stand before Moses
because of the boils; for the
boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.
The magicians could not stand before Moses, because the boils had broken out on them and on all the Egyptians.
But the wheat and the
rie were not
smitten: for they were not grown up.
but the wheat and
spelt were not destroyed,
because they are late crops.)
And they
baked unleavened cakes of the
dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not
leavened;
because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not
tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any
victual.
Since their
dough had no
leaven, the people
baked what they had brought out of Egypt into
unleavened loaves. For when they had been driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared any provisions for themselves.
