Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.
He will hand their kings over to you, and you will
wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will
annihilate them.
As the nations which the LORD destroyeth
before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be
obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.
A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand
before the children of
Anak!
The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the
Anakim. You know about them, and you have heard it said, “Who can stand up to the sons of
Anak?”
Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over
before thee; as a
consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down
before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.
But understand that
today the LORD your God goes across
ahead of you as a
consuming fire; He will destroy them and
subdue them
before you. And you will drive them out and
annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you.
Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from
before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD
doth drive them out from
before thee.
When the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say in your heart, “Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land.” Rather, the LORD is driving out these nations before you because of their wickedness.
Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart,
dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God
doth drive them out from
before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD
sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
It is not because of your righteousness or uprightness of heart that you are going in to possess their land, but it is because of their wickedness that the LORD your God is driving out these nations
before you, to keep the promise He
swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and
brake them
before your eyes.
So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands,
shattering them
before your eyes.
And I fell down
before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye
sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
Then I fell down
before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and
provoking Him to anger.
Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.
So I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said He would destroy you.
At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand
before the LORD to minister unto him, and to
bless in his name, unto this day.
At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand
before the LORD to serve Him, and to
pronounce blessings in His name, as they do to this day.
And the LORD said unto me, Arise, take thy journey
before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I
sware unto their fathers to give unto them.
Then the LORD said to me, “Get up. Continue your journey
ahead of the people, that they may enter and possess the land that I
swore to their fathers to give them.”
Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from
before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than
yourselves.
then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you.
There shall no man be able to stand
before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the
dread of you upon all the land that ye shall
tread upon, as he hath said unto you.
No man will be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will put the fear and
dread of you upon all the land, wherever you set foot, as He has promised you.
Behold, I set
before you this day a blessing and a
curse;
See,
today I am setting
before you a blessing and a
curse—
And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.
be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances that I am setting
before you
today.
And there ye shall eat
before the LORD your God, and ye shall
rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the LORD thy God hath blessed thee.
There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your households shall eat and
rejoice in all you do, because the LORD your God has blessed you.
And ye shall
rejoice before the LORD your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the
Levite that is within your gates;
forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you.
And you shall
rejoice before the LORD your God—you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the
Levite within your gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.
But thou must eat them
before the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD thy God shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy
manservant, and thy
maidservant, and the
Levite that is within thy gates: and thou shalt
rejoice before the LORD thy God in all that thou puttest thine hands unto.
Instead, you must eat them in the presence of the LORD your God at the place the LORD your God will choose—you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the
Levite within your gates.
Rejoice before the LORD your God in all you do,
When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from
before thee,
whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;
When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations you are entering to dispossess, and you drive them out and live in their land,
Take
heed to
thyself that thou be not
snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from
before thee; and that thou
enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, “How do these nations serve their gods? I will do likewise.”
And thou shalt eat
before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the
tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
And you are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the
firstborn of your herds and flocks, in the presence of the LORD your God at the place He will choose as a dwelling for His Name, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.
And thou shalt
bestow that money for
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for
whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there
before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt
rejoice, thou, and thine household,
Then you may
spend the money on anything you desire: cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink, or anything you wish. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and
rejoice with your household.
Thou shalt eat it before the LORD thy God year by year in the place which the LORD shall choose, thou and thy household.
Each year you and your household are to eat it before the LORD your God in the place the LORD will choose.
And thou shalt
rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy
manservant, and thy
maidservant, and the
Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to place his name there.
and you shall
rejoice before the LORD your God in the place He will choose as a dwelling for His Name—you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the
Levite within your gates, as well as the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widows among you.
Three times in a year shall all thy males appear
before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of
unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear
before the LORD empty:
Three times a year all your men are to appear
before the LORD your God in the place He will choose: at the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles. No one should appear
before the LORD empty-handed.
And the man that will do
presumptuously, and will not
hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there
before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
But the man who acts
presumptuously, refusing to
listen either to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, or to the judge, must be put to death. You must
purge the evil from Israel.
And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write for himself a copy of this instruction on a
scroll in the presence of the
Levitical priests.
Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.
For all that do these things are an
abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God
doth drive them out from
before thee.
For
whoever does these things is
detestable to the LORD. And because of these
detestable things, the LORD your God is driving out the nations
before you.
Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
You must be
blameless before the LORD your God.
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD, before the priests and judges who are in office at that time.
Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to
inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved
firstborn before the son of the
hated, which is indeed the
firstborn:
when that man assigns his inheritance to his sons he must not
appoint the son of the beloved wife as the
firstborn over the son of the unloved wife.
If a bird’s nest chance to be
before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the
dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the
dam with the young:
If you come across a bird’s nest with chicks or eggs, either in a tree or on the ground along the road, and the mother is sitting on the chicks or eggs, you must not take the mother along with the young.
And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a
maid; and yet these are the
tokens of my daughter’s
virginity. And they shall spread the cloth
before the elders of the city.
And now he has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.’ But here is the proof of her
virginity.” And they shall spread out the cloth
before the city elders.
For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy: that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, lest He see anything unclean among you and turn away from you.
Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is
defiled; for that is
abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
then the husband who
divorced her first may not remarry her after she has been
defiled, for that is an
abomination to the LORD. You must not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
In any case thou shalt deliver him the
pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own
raiment, and
bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee
before the LORD thy God.
be sure to return it to him by
sunset, so that he may sleep in his own
cloak and
bless you, and this will be credited to you as righteousness
before the LORD your God.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day
before sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants.
And the priest shall take the
basket out of thine hand, and set it down
before the altar of the LORD thy God.
Then the priest shall take the
basket from your hands and place it
before the altar of the LORD your God,
And thou shalt speak and say
before the LORD thy God, A
Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and
sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and
populous:
and you are to declare
before the LORD your God, “My father was a wandering
Aramean, and he went down to Egypt few in number and lived there and became a great nation, mighty and numerous.
And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O LORD, hast given me. And thou shalt set it before the LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God:
And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land that You, O LORD, have given me.” Then you are to place the
basket before the LORD your God and bow down
before Him.
Then thou shalt say
before the LORD thy God, I have brought away the
hallowed things out of mine house, and also have given them unto the
Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me: I have not
transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them:
Then you shall declare in the presence of the LORD your God, “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the
Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all the commandments You have given me. I have not
transgressed or forgotten Your commandments.
And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat there, and
rejoice before the LORD thy God.
There you are to sacrifice your peace offerings, eating them and
rejoicing in the presence of the LORD your God.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be
smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and
flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated
before you. They will march out against you in one direction but
flee from you in seven.
The LORD shall cause thee to be
smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and
flee seven ways
before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
The LORD will cause you to be defeated
before your enemies. You will march out against them in one direction but
flee from them in seven. You will be an object of
horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
Thine ox shall be slain
before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine
ass shall be violently taken away from
before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to
rescue them.
Your ox will be slaughtered
before your eyes, but you will not eat any of it. Your
donkey will be taken away and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will save you.
And thy life shall
hang in doubt
before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
So your life will
hang in doubt
before you, and you will be afraid night and day, never certain of
survival.
And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
Moses summoned all Israel and proclaimed to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land.
Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,
All of you are standing
today before the LORD your God—you leaders of tribes, elders, officials, and all the men of Israel,
But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day:
but also with those who are standing here with us
today in the presence of the LORD our God, as well as with those who are not here
today.
And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the
curse, which I have set
before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations,
whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,
“When all these things come upon you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you call them to mind in all the nations to which the LORD your God has banished you,
See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
See, I have set
before you
today life and goodness, as well as death and
disaster.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set
before you life and death, blessing and
cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you
today that I have set
before you life and death, blessing and
cursing. Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.
The LORD your God Himself will cross over
ahead of you. He will destroy these nations
before you, and you will dispossess them. Joshua will cross
ahead of you, as the LORD has said.
And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.
The LORD will deliver them over to you, and you must do to them exactly as I have commanded you.
And the LORD, he it is that
doth go
before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither
forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
The LORD Himself goes
before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor
forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
when all Israel comes before the LORD your God at the place He will choose, you are to read this law in the hearing of all Israel.
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now,
before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them, this song will
testify against them, because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I know their inclination, even
before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.
Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officers so that I may speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and earth to witness against them.
Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
Although you shall see from a distance the land that I am giving the Israelites, you shall not enter it.”
And this is the blessing,
wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel
before his death.
This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.
They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; he will set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from
before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
The eternal God is your dwelling place, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy
before you, giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’
Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy
excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt
tread upon their high places.
Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the sword in which you
boast. Your enemies will cower
before you, and you shall
trample their high places.”
There shall not any man be able to stand
before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor
forsake you.
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be armed for battle to cross over
ahead of your brothers and help them,
And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
Before the
spies lay down for the night,
Rahab went up on the roof
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the
Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and
Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea
before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and
Og, the two kings of the
Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from
Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and
lodged there
before they passed over.
Early the next morning Joshua got up and left
Shittim with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan, where they camped
before crossing over.
Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between
yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way
before.”
And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant and go on
ahead of the people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went
ahead of them.
And Joshua said,
Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from
before you the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Hivites, and the
Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan.
Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go
ahead of you into the Jordan.
And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;
So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant
ahead of them.
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
and said to them, “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel,
Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off
before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a
memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
you are to tell them, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off
before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters were cut off.’ Therefore these stones will be a
memorial to the Israelites
forever.”
And the children of
Reuben, and the children of
Gad, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, passed over armed
before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh crossed over
before the Israelites, armed for battle as Moses had
instructed them.
About forty thousand prepared for war passed over
before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of
Jericho.
About 40,000 troops armed for battle crossed over
before the LORD into the plains of
Jericho.
And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before.
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, just as He did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from
before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan
before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And seven priests shall bear
before the ark seven
trumpets of rams horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the
trumpets.
Have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark. Then on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the horns.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the people shall
shout with a great
shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall
ascend up every man straight
before him.
And when there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty
shout. Then the wall of the city will
collapse and all your people will charge straight into the city.”
And Joshua the son of
Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven
trumpets of rams’ horns
before the ark of the LORD.
So Joshua son of
Nun summoned the priests and said, “Take up the ark of the covenant and have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark of the LORD.”
And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.
And he told the people, “Advance and march around the city, with the armed troops going
ahead of the ark of the LORD.”
And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven
trumpets of rams’ horns passed on
before the LORD, and
blew with the
trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.
After Joshua had spoken to the people, seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns
before the LORD advanced and
blew the horns, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.
And the armed men went
before the priests that
blew with the
trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the
trumpets.
While the horns continued to sound, the armed troops marched
ahead of the priests who
blew the horns, and the rear guard followed the ark.
And seven priests bearing seven
trumpets of rams’ horns
before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and
blew with the
trumpets: and the armed men went
before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the
trumpets.
And the seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns kept marching
ahead of the ark of the LORD and blowing the horns. The armed troops went in front of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the horns kept sounding.
So the people
shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people
shouted with a great
shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight
before him, and they took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people
shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great
shout, and the wall
collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it.
And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man
before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his
firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city,
Jericho; at the cost of his
firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”
So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled
before the men of
Ai.
So about three thousand men went up, but they fled
before the men of
Ai.
And the men of
Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from
before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
And the men of
Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face
before the ark of the LORD until the
eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
Then Joshua
tore his clothes and fell facedown
before the ark of the LORD until evening, as did the elders of Israel; and they all
sprinkled dust on their heads.
O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has turned its back and run from its enemies?
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand
before their enemies, but turned their backs
before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
Up,
sanctify the people, and say,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an
accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand
before thine enemies, until ye take away the
accursed thing from among you.
Get up and
consecrate the people, saying, ‘
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
They took the things from inside the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD.
And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will
flee before them,
Then I and all the troops with me will advance on the city. When they come out against us as they did the first time, we will
flee from them.
(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They
flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will
flee before them.
They will pursue us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘The Israelites are running away from us as they did
before.’ So as we
flee from them,
