So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the
brook Cherith, that is
before Jordan.
So
Elijah did what the LORD had told him, and he went and lived by the
Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
And
Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth,
before whom I stand, I will surely
shew myself unto him to day.
Then
Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives,
before whom I stand, I will present myself to
Ahab today.”
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto
Ahab, Prepare thy
chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And
Elijah replied, “Go and tell
Ahab, ‘Prepare your
chariot and go down
before the rain stops you.’”
And the hand of the LORD was on
Elijah; and he
girded up his loins, and ran
before Ahab to the entrance of
Jezreel.
And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount
before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and
brake in pieces the rocks
before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an
earthquake; but the LORD was not in the
earthquake:
Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain
before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind
tore into the mountains and
shattered the rocks
before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an
earthquake, but the LORD was not in the
earthquake.
So he departed thence, and found
Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was
plowing with twelve yoke of oxen
before him, and he with the
twelfth: and
Elijah passed by him, and cast his
mantle upon him.
And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
The Israelites also
mobilized, gathered supplies, and marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped
before them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the
countryside.
And set two men, sons of
Belial,
before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou
didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.
But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them
testify, ‘You have
cursed both God and the king!’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”
And there came in two men, children of
Belial, and sat
before him: and the men of
Belial witnessed against him, even against
Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying,
Naboth did
blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.
And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite
Naboth, and these men
testified against him
before the people, saying, “
Naboth has
cursed both God and the king!” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.
And he did very
abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the
Amorites, whom the LORD cast out
before the children of Israel.
He committed the most
detestable acts by going after idols, just like the
Amorites whom the LORD had driven out
before the Israelites.)
Seest thou how
Ahab humbleth himself
before me? because he humbleth himself
before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
“Have you seen how
Ahab has humbled himself
before Me? Because he has humbled himself
before Me, I will not bring the
calamity during his days, but I will bring it upon his house in the days of his son.”
And the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, having put on their robes, in a void place in the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets
prophesied before them.
Dressed in royal
attire, the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the
threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets
prophesying before them.
And there came forth a spirit, and stood
before the LORD, and said, I will
persuade him.
Then a spirit came forward, stood
before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked the LORD.
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees
before Elijah, and
besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees
before Elijah, and
begged him, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight.
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee,
before I be taken away from thee. And
Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you
before I am taken away from you?” “Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at
Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of
Elijah doth rest on
Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground
before him.
When the sons of the prophets who were facing him from
Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of
Elijah rests on
Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground
before him.
And
Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth,
before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
Then
Elisha said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives,
before whom I stand, were it not for my regard for the presence of
Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or acknowledge you.
And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and
smote the Moabites, so that they fled
before them: but they went forward
smiting the Moabites, even in their country.
But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked them, and they fled before them. So the Israelites invaded their land and struck down the Moabites.
And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.
And he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call the Shunammite woman.” And when he had called her, she stood before him,
And Gehazi passed on
before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not
awaked.
Gehazi went on
ahead of them and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or
response. So he went back to meet
Elisha and told him, “The boy has not
awakened.”
And
Elisha came again to
Gilgal: and there was a
dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting
before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and
seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.
When
Elisha returned to
Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the sons of the prophets were sitting at his feet, he said to his
attendant, “Put on the large pot and
boil some
stew for the sons of the prophets.”
And his
servitor said, What, should I set this
before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
But his servant asked, “How am I to set twenty
loaves before a hundred men?” “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha, “for this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’”
So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.
So he set it
before them, and they
ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD.
And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
Then
Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God, stood
before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.
But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives,
before whom I stand, I will not accept it.” And although
Naaman urged him to accept it, he refused.
And
Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them
before him.
But
Naaman insisted, “Please, take two talents.” And he urged Gehazi to accept them. Then he
tied up two talents of silver in two bags along with two sets of clothing and gave them to two of his servants, who carried them
ahead of Gehazi.
But he went in, and stood
before his master. And
Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no
whither.
When Gehazi went in and stood
before his master,
Elisha asked him, “Gehazi, where have you been?” “Your servant did not go
anywhere,” he replied.
And he answered, Thou shalt not
smite them: wouldest thou
smite those whom thou hast taken
captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water
before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from
before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but
before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
So
Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood
before him, and said, Thy son Ben-
hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So
Hazael went to meet
Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty
camel loads of every good thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood
before him and said, “Your son Ben-
hadad king of
Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand?
But they were
terrified and reasoned, “If two kings could not stand against him, how can we?”
And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I
conspired against my master, and
slew him: but who
slew all these?
The next morning,
Jehu went out and stood
before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who
conspired against my master and killed him. But who killed all these?
And all the people of the land went into the house of
Baal, and
brake it down; his altars and his images
brake they in pieces thoroughly, and
slew Mattan the priest of
Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the LORD.
So all the people of the land went to the temple of
Baal and
tore it down. They
smashed the altars and idols to pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of
Baal in front of the altars. And Jehoiada the priest posted guards for the house of the LORD.
(And the LORD gave Israel a saviour, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as
beforetime.
So the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped the power of the Arameans. Then the people of Israel lived in their own homes as they had before.
And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.
And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his home.
Then Shallum son of
Jabesh conspired against
Zechariah, struck him down and killed him in front of the people, and reigned in his place.
But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel,
yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from
before the children of Israel.
Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
And he brought also the
brasen altar, which was
before the LORD, from the
forefront of the house, from between the altar and the house of the LORD, and put it on the north side of the altar.
He also took the bronze altar that stood before the LORD from the front of the temple (between the new altar and the house of the LORD) and he put it on the north side of the new altar.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
and walked in the customs of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites, as well as in the practices introduced by the kings of Israel.
And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away
before them; and wrought wicked things to
provoke the LORD to anger:
They burned incense on all the high places like the nations that the LORD had driven out
before them. They did wicked things,
provoking the LORD to anger.
He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. No king of Judah was like him, either
before him or after him.
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship
before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship
before this altar in Jerusalem’?
And
Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and
Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it
before the LORD.
So
Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers, read it, and went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out
before the LORD.
And
Hezekiah prayed
before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
And
Hezekiah prayed
before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the
cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green
herb, as the grass on the house tops, and as corn blasted
before it be grown up.
Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power, are dismayed and
ashamed. They are like plants in the field, tender green shoots, grass on the rooftops,
scorched before it is grown.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor come
before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come
before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
I
beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked
before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
“Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked
before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
And it came to pass,
afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
Before Isaiah had left the middle
courtyard, the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD by following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
But they
hearkened not: and
Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed
before the children of Israel.
But the people did not
listen and
Manasseh led them
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed
before the Israelites.
Because
Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the
Amorites did, which were
before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols:
“Since
Manasseh king of Judah has committed all these abominations, acting more wickedly than the
Amorites who preceded him, and with his idols has caused Judah to sin,
And Shaphan the
scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it
before the king.
Moreover, Shaphan the
scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.
Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled
thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a
curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and
wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a
desolation and a
curse, and because you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
And the king stood by a
pillar, and made a covenant
before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his
testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.
So the king stood by the
pillar and made a covenant
before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.
And the high places that were
before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had builded for
Ashtoreth the
abomination of the Zidonians, and for
Chemosh the
abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the
abomination of the children of
Ammon, did the king
defile.
And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
Neither
before nor after
Josiah was there any king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses.
And they
slew the sons of
Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of
Zedekiah, and bound him with
fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon.
And they slaughtered the sons of
Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze
shackles, and took him to Babylon.
And Gedaliah
sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.
And Gedaliah took an oath
before them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.”
And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life.
So
Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes, and he
dined regularly at the king’s table for the rest of his life.
Now these are the kings that reigned in the land of
Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel;
Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
These are the kings who reigned in the land of
Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites:
Bela son of Beor. His city was named Dinhabah.
And they
transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a
whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed
before them.
They were mighty men of
valor, famous men, and heads of their families. But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and they
prostituted themselves with the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed
before them.
And they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and then they waited on their office according to their order.
They ministered with song before the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, until Solomon built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. And they performed their duties according to the regulations given them.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from
before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount
Gilboa.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled
before them, and many fell slain on Mount
Gilboa.
Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to
Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in
Hebron before the LORD; and they
anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron, where David made a covenant with them
before the LORD. And they
anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a
parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from
before the Philistines.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At the place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.
And David and all Israel played
before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with
psalteries, and with
timbrels, and with cymbals, and with
trumpets.
David and all the Israelites were
celebrating before God with all their might, with songs and on harps and lyres, with tambourines, cymbals, and
trumpets.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzza, and he
smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died
before God.
And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth
before thee to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move out to battle, because this will mean that God has marched out
before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.
Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister
before Him
forever.”
And Shebaniah, and
Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and
Zechariah, and Benaiah, and
Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the
trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed-
edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.
Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai,
Zechariah, Benaiah, and
Eliezer—the priests—were to blow the
trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-
edom and Jehiah were also to be guardians of the ark.
So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.
So they brought the ark of God and placed it inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And they presented burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.
And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister
before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to
thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:
David appointed some of the Levites to minister
before the ark of the LORD, to
celebrate, to give
thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel.
Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with
trumpets continually
before the ark of the covenant of God.
and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel
blew the
trumpets regularly
before the ark of the covenant of God.
Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and
gladness are in his place.
Splendor and majesty are
before Him; strength and joy fill His dwelling.
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come
before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of
holiness.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering and come
before Him. Worship the LORD in the
splendor of His
holiness;
Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
tremble before Him, all the earth. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.
Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the LORD, for He is coming to judge the earth.
So he left there
before the ark of the covenant of the LORD
Asaph and his brethren, to minister
before the ark continually, as every day’s work required:
So David left
Asaph and his brothers there
before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to minister there regularly according to the daily requirements,
And
Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests,
before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at
Gibeon,
And David left
Zadok the priest and his fellow priests
before the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place in
Gibeon And I have been with thee
whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from
before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. And I will never remove My loving devotion from him as I removed it from your predecessor.
And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to
redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from
before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to
redeem as a people for Himself? You made a name for
Yourself through great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations from
before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt.
Let it even be established, that thy name may be
magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established
before thee.
so that Your name will be established and
magnified forever when it is said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.’ And may the house of Your servant David be established
before You.
For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou
wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray
before thee.
For You, my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build a house for him. Therefore Your servant has found the courage to pray before You.
Now therefore let it please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may be
before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
So now You have been pleased to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed
forever.”
So they
hired thirty and two thousand
chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched
before Medeba. And the children of
Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
So they
hired for themselves thirty-two thousand
chariots, as well as the king of
Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the
Ammonites came from their cities and marched out for battle.
And the children of
Ammon came out, and put the battle in
array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
The
Ammonites marched out and
arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance to the city, while the kings who had come stayed by themselves in the open country.
Now when
Joab saw that the battle was set against him
before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in
array against the Syrians.
When
Joab saw the battle lines
before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and
arrayed them against the Arameans.
So
Joab and the people that were with him drew
nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled
before him.
So
Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled
before him.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled
before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then
Joab came to Jerusalem.
When the
Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled
before Joab’s brother
Abishai, and they entered the city. So
Joab went back to Jerusalem.
And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
But the Syrians fled
before Israel; and David
slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in
chariots, and forty thousand
footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army.
And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse
before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of
Ammon any more.
When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were unwilling to help the
Ammonites anymore.
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed
before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away
before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked out and saw David, he left the
threshing floor and bowed facedown
before David.
But David could not go
before it to
enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding
magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly
before his death.
And David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent—famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore I must make preparations for it.” So David made
lavish preparations
before his death.
