The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and
Haran, three. These were the

And Jahath was the
chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one
reckoning, according to their father’s house.

And there were more
chief men found of the sons of
Eleazar than of the sons of
Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of

chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of
Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.
Since more leaders were found among
Eleazar’s descendants than those of
Ithamar, they were divided accordingly. There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of
Eleazar and eight from the descendants of
Ithamar.
And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the
scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and
Zadok the priest, and
Ahimelech the son of
Abiathar, and before the
chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for
Eleazar, and one taken for
Ithamar.
The
scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a
Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers:
Zadok the priest,
Ahimelech son of
Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from
Eleazar, and then one from
Ithamar.
These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and

firstborn, his father had appointed him as the first),
Among these were the divisions of the
porters, even among the
chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.

Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the
chief, even among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the
fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of
Gilead.
As for the Hebronites, Jerijah was the
chief of the Hebronites, according to the
genealogies of his ancestors. In the

Gilead.
And his brethren, men of valour, were two thousand and seven hundred
chief fathers, whom king David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king.
Among Jerijah’s relatives there were 2,700 capable men who were heads of families. King David appointed them over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh for every matter pertaining to God and to the affairs of the king.
Now the children of Israel after their number, to wit, the chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in any matter of the courses, which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, of every course were twenty and four thousand.
This is the list of the Israelites—the heads of families, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king in every matter concerning the divisions on
rotating military duty each month throughout the year. There were 24,000 men in each division:
Of the children of
Perez was the
chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.
He was a
descendant of

chief of all the army commanders for the first month.
The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.
The third army commander, as chief for the third month, was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest. There were 24,000 men in his division.
Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king’s work, offered willingly,

And did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great
gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and
anointed him unto the LORD to be the
chief governor, and
Zadok to be priest.
That day they
ate and
drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD. Then, for a second time, they designated David’s son Solomon as king,
anointing him before the LORD as ruler, and
Zadok as the priest.
Then Solomon spake unto all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every governor in all Israel, the chief of the fathers.
Then Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel—the heads of the families.
Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the
chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is
Zion.
At that time Solomon assembled in Jerusalem the elders of Israel—all the
tribal heads and family leaders of the Israelites—to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from
Zion, the City of David.
But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no servants for his work; but they were men of war, and
chief of his captains, and captains of his
chariots and
horsemen.
But Solomon did not
consign any of the Israelites to slave labor, because they were his men of war, his officers and captains, and the commanders of his
chariots and cavalry.
And these were the chief of king Solomon’s officers, even two hundred and fifty, that bare rule over the people.
They were also the chief officers for King Solomon: 250 supervisors.
And
Rehoboam made
Abijah the son of Maachah the
chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king.
Rehoboam appointed
Abijah son of
Maacah as
chief prince among his brothers, intending to make him king.
Instead of which king
Rehoboam made shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the
chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king’s house.
Then King
Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
And these are the numbers of them according to the house of their fathers: Of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand.
These are their numbers according to the houses of their fathers: From Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, and with him 300,000 mighty men of
valor;
Moreover in Jerusalem did
Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the
chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for
controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.
Moreover,
Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem some of the Levites, priests, and heads of the
Israelite families to judge on behalf of the LORD and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem.
And, behold, Amariah the
chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of
Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king’s matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal
courageously, and the LORD shall be with the good.
Note that Amariah, the
chief priest, will be over you in all that pertains to the LORD, and Zebadiah son of
Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, in all that pertains to the king. And the Levites will serve as officers before you. Act
resolutely; may the LORD be with the upright!”
And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
So they went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the heads of the families of Israel. And when they came to Jerusalem,
And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?”
The whole number of the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of valour were two thousand and six hundred.
The total number of family leaders of the mighty men of
valor was 2,600.
And
Azariah the
chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was
leprous in his
forehead, and they thrust him out from thence;
yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had
smitten him.
And
Azariah the
chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the
chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
And Jehiel, and Azaziah, and Nahath, and
Asahel, and Jerimoth, and Jozabad, and Eliel, and Ismachiah, and Mahath, and Benaiah, were overseers under the hand of Cononiah and Shimei his brother, at the commandment of
Hezekiah the king, and
Azariah the ruler of the house of God.
Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath,
Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah were overseers under the authority of Conaniah and his brother Shimei, by appointment of King
Hezekiah and of
Azariah the
chief official of the house of God.
And
Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the
chiefest of the
sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And
Manasseh his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad,
chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for
passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.
Additionally, Conaniah and his brothers Shemaiah and Nethanel, as well as Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, officers of the Levites,
donated to the Levites 5,000
Passover offerings and 500 bulls.
Moreover all the
chief of the priests, and the people,
transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and
polluted the house of the LORD which he had
hallowed in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they
defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites—
everyone whose spirit God had
stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place:
When they arrived at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the families gave
freewill offerings to rebuild the house of God on its original site.
But many of the priests and Levites and
chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes,
wept with a loud voice; and many
shouted aloud for joy:
But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple
wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others
shouted joyfully.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the
chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the
chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
We asked their names also, to
certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the
chief of them.
We also asked for their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
The son of Abishua, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the
chief priest:
the son of Abishua, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the
chief priest—
And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
and who has shown me favor before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. And because the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, I took courage and gathered the leaders of Israel to return with me.
These are now the
chief of their fathers, and this is the
genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of
Artaxerxes the king.
These are the family heads and
genealogical records of those who returned with me from Babylon during the reign of King
Artaxerxes:
Then sent I for
Eliezer, for
Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for
Nathan, and for
Zechariah, and for Meshullam,
chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.
Then I summoned the leaders:
Eliezer,
Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan,
Nathan,
Zechariah, and Meshullam, as well as the teachers Joiarib and Elnathan.
And I sent them with commandment unto
Iddo the
chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto
Iddo, and to his brethren the
Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.
And I sent them to
Iddo, the leader at Casiphia, with a message for him and his
kinsmen, the temple servants at Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God.
Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,
Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, together with Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers,
Watch ye, and keep them, until ye
weigh them before the
chief of the priests and the Levites, and
chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.
Guard them carefully until you
weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the LORD in Jerusalem before the leading priests, Levites, and heads of the
Israelite families.”
For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands:
yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been
chief in this
trespass.
Indeed, the Israelites have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed has been mixed with the people of the land. And the leaders and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”
Then arose
Ezra, and made the
chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had been said. And they took the oath.
And the children of the captivity did so. And
Ezra the priest, with certain
chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
So the exiles did as proposed.
Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, each of them identified by name, to represent their families. On the first day of the tenth month they
launched the investigation,
And some of the
chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the
treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.
Some of the heads of the families contributed to the project. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics of gold, 50
bowls, and 530 priestly garments.
And some of the
chief of the fathers gave to the
treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pounds of silver.

scribe to study the words of the Law.

Now these are the
chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—

supervised the work outside the house of God;

And the
chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise and to give
thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over against ward.
The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, along with their associates, who stood across from them to give praise and
thanksgiving as one section alternated with the other, as prescribed by David the man of God.
For in the days of David and
Asaph of old there were
chief of the singers, and songs of praise and
thanksgiving unto God.
For long ago, in the days of David and
Asaph, there were directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and
thanksgiving to God.
He taketh away the heart of the
chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to
wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
He deprives the earth’s leaders of reason and makes them
wander in a
trackless wasteland.
I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
I chose their course and presided as chief. So I dwelt as a king among his troops, as a comforter of the mourners.
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.
And
smote all the
firstborn in Egypt; the
chief of their strength in the tabernacles of
Ham:
He
smote also all the
firstborn in their land, the
chief of all their strength.
Then He struck all the
firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their
vigor.
If I do not remember thee, let my tongue
cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I
prefer not Jerusalem above my
chief joy.
May my tongue
cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not
exalt Jerusalem as my greatest joy!
She crieth in the
chief place of
concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
My beloved is white and
ruddy, the
chiefest among ten thousand.
My beloved is
dazzling and
ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand.
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be
exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the
chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
Sheol beneath is eager to meet you upon your arrival. It stirs the spirits of the dead to
greet you— all the rulers of the earth. It makes all the kings of the nations rise from their thrones.
In the year that
Tartan came unto
Ashdod, (when
Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against
Ashdod, and took it;
Before the year that the
chief commander, sent by
Sargon king of Assyria, came to
Ashdod and attacked and captured it,
Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.
I brought you from the ends of the earth and called you from its
farthest corners. I said, ‘You are My servant.’ I have chosen and not rejected you.
What
wilt thou say when he shall
punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as
chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in
travail?
What will you say when He sets over you close allies whom you
yourself trained? Will not pangs of
anguish grip you, as they do a woman in labor?
Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also
chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah
prophesied these things.
When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer and the
chief official in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah
prophesying these things,
The LORD hath made thee priest in the
stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is
mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.
‘The LORD has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada, to be the
chief officer in the house of the LORD, responsible for any
madman who acts like a prophet—you must put him in stocks and neck irons.
For thus saith the LORD; Sing with
gladness for Jacob, and
shout among the
chief of the nations:
publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the
remnant of Israel.
For this is what the LORD says: “Sing with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost of the nations! Make your praises heard, and say, ‘O LORD, save Your people, the
remnant of Israel!’
Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam to

Mizpah.
In the seventh month,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family and one of the king’s
chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam at
Mizpah, and they
ate a meal together there.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of
Elam, the
chief of their might.

shatter Elam’s bow, the
mainstay of their might.
And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the
chief priest, and
Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:
The captain of the guard also took away Seraiah the
chief priest,
Zephaniah the priest of second rank, and the three doorkeepers.
Her
adversaries are the
chief, her enemies
prosper; for the LORD hath
afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. For the LORD has brought her grief because of her many transgressions. Her children have gone away as
captives before the enemy.
The merchants of
Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with
chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.
The merchants of
Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your wares they exchanged gold, the finest of all spices, and precious stones.
The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of
hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie
uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
Mighty
chiefs will speak from the midst of
Sheol about Egypt and her allies: ‘They have come down and lie with the
uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.’
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold I am against thee, O
Gog, the
chief prince of
Meshech and
Tubal:
