Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth,
hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of
fifties, and rulers of tens:
Thou shalt not
covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not
covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his
manservant, nor his
maidservant, nor his ox, nor his
ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
For I will cast out the nations before thee, and
enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God
thrice in the year.
For I will drive out the nations before you and
enlarge your borders, and no one will
covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God.
Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou
covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his
manservant, or his
maidservant, his ox, or his
ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
The
graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be
snared therein: for it is an
abomination to the LORD thy God.
You must burn up the images of their gods; do not
covet the silver and gold that is on them or take it for
yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it; for it is
detestable to the LORD your God.
When I saw among the spoils a goodly
Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a
wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I
coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are
hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
When I saw among the spoils a beautiful
cloak from
Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I
coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver
underneath.”
For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the
covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.
For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart; he blesses the
greedy and reviles the LORD.
He
coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.
All day long he covets more, but the righteous give without restraint.
I was
enraged by his sinful
greed, so I struck him and
hid My face in anger; yet he kept turning back to the desires of his heart.
For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to
covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
“For from the least of them to the greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice
deceit.
Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall
inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to
covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. For from the least of them to the greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice
deceit.
But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy
covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
“But your eyes and heart are set on nothing except your own
dishonest gain, on
shedding innocent blood, on practicing
extortion and oppression.”
O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy
covetousness.
You who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come; the thread of your life is cut.
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they
shew much love, but their heart goeth after their
covetousness.
So My people come to you as usual, sit before you, and hear your words; but they do not put them into practice. Although they express love with their mouths, their hearts pursue
dishonest gain.
And they
covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they
oppress a man and his house, even a man and his
heritage.
They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses. They deprive a man of his home, a fellow man of his inheritance.
Woe to him that
coveteth an evil
covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high and escape the hand of
disaster!
And he said unto them, Take
heed, and
beware of
covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard
yourselves against every form of
greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
The
Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were
scoffing at Jesus.
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God
forbid.
Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known
lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not
covet.
What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of
coveting if the law had not said, “Do not
covet.”
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of
concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of
covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
For this, Thou shalt not commit
adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not
covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly
comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
The commandments “Do not commit
adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not
steal,” “Do not
covet,” and any other commandments, are
summed up in this one decree: “Love your
neighbor as
yourself.”
Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the
covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
I was not including the sexually immoral of this world, or the
greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.
nor
thieves, nor the
greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will
inherit the kingdom of God.
But
covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet
shew I unto you a more excellent way.
But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
Wherefore, brethren,
covet to
prophesy, and
forbid not to speak with tongues.
So, my brothers, be eager to
prophesy, and do not
forbid speaking in tongues.
Therefore I thought it necessary to
exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up
beforehand your
bounty,
whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of
bounty, and not as of
covetousness.
So I thought it necessary to
urge the brothers to visit you
beforehand and make arrangements for the
bountiful gift you had promised. This way, your gift will be prepared generously and not begrudgingly.
But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a
hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of
greed.
For this ye know, that no
whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor
covetous man, who is an
idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or
greedy person (that is, an
idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity,
lust, evil desires, and
greed, which is
idolatry.
As you know, we never used words of
flattery or any pretext for
greed. God is our witness!
not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, and free of the love of money.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some
coveted after, they have
erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By
craving it, some have
wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
Let your conversation be without
covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor
forsake thee.
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I
forsake you.”
Ye
lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
You
crave what you do not have; you kill and
covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask.
In their
greed, these false teachers will
exploit you with
deceptive words. The longstanding
verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep.
Having eyes full of
adultery, and that cannot cease from sin;
beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with
covetous practices;
cursed children:
Their eyes are full of
adultery; their desire for sin is never satisfied; they
seduce the unstable. They are
accursed children with hearts trained in
greed.
Why is earth and ashes proud? There is not a more wicked thing than a
covetous man: for such an one setteth his own soul to sale; because while he liveth he casteth away his
bowels.
A
covetous man’s eye is not satisfied with his portion; and the iniquity of the wicked drieth up his soul.
Now they that were with Simon, being led with
covetousness, were persuaded for money through certain of those that were in the castle, and took seventy thousand drachms, and let some of them escape.
