For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not
hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
My conscience is clear, but that
does not
vindicate me. It is the Lord who judges me.
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man
doeth is without the body; but he that committeth
fornication sinneth against his own body.
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.
The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be
reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
But if she
does, she must remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not
divorce his wife.
Nevertheless he that standeth
stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin,
doeth well.
But the man who is firmly established in his heart and under no
constraint, with control over his will and
resolve in his heart not to marry the virgin, he will do well.
So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
So then, he who marries the virgin does well, but he who does not marry her does even better.
And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
The one who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know.
But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
But food does not bring us closer to God: We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
But take
heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
Be careful, however, that your freedom
does not become a
stumbling block to the weak.
Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a
vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a
vineyard and
does not eat of its fruit? Who tends a flock and
does not drink of its milk?
Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
Do I say this from a human
perspective?
Doesn’t the Law say the same thing?
For if the woman be not covered, let her also be
shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be
shorn or
shaven, let her be covered.
If a woman
does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or
shaved off, she should cover her head.
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
For the body is not one member, but many.
For the body does not consist of one part, but of many.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not
puffed up,
Love is patient, love is kind. It
does not
envy, it
does not
boast, it is not proud.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
Else when thou shalt
bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say
Amen at thy giving of
thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit, how can someone who is
uninstructed say “
Amen” to your
thanksgiving, since he
does not know what you are saying?
For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
For “God has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him.
Thou
fool, that which thou sowest is not
quickened, except it die:
You
fool! What you
sow does not come to life unless it dies.
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God; neither
doth corruption
inherit incorruption.
Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God, nor
does the perishable
inherit the imperishable.
The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings.
Aquila and Prisca
greet you warmly in the Lord, and so
does the church that meets at their house.
If
anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a
curse. Come, O Lord!
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what
partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what
fellowship does light have with darkness?
What harmony is there between Christ and
Belial? Or what
does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
You are looking at outward appearances. If
anyone is
confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that we belong to Christ just as much as he
does.
But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (
whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
But as for the highly esteemed—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God
does not show
favoritism—those leaders added nothing to me.
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God
forbid.
But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? Certainly not!
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Does God
lavish His Spirit on you and work miracles among you because you practice the law, or because you hear and believe?
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the
curse: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
All who
rely on works of the law are under a
curse. For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who
does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say, “and to seeds,” meaning many, but “and to your seed,” meaning One, who is Christ.
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot
disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
What I mean is this: The law that came 430 years later
does not
revoke the covenant previously established by God, so as to
nullify the promise.
Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the
bondwoman and her son: for the son of the
bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.
But what
does the Scripture say? “
Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
This
persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.
Such
persuasion does not come from the One who calls you.
(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth?
For no man ever yet
hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
Indeed, no one ever
hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ
does the church.
Knowing that
whatsoever good thing any man
doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.
But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and
Marcus, sister’s son to
Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)
My fellow prisoner
Aristarchus sends you greetings, as
does Mark the cousin of
Barnabas. You have already received instructions about him: If he comes to you,
welcome him.
He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
Anyone, then, who rejects this command
does not
reject man but God, the very One who gives you His Holy Spirit.
And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be
ashamed.
Take note of
anyone who
does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be
ashamed.
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
For if someone
does not know how to
manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God?
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an
infidel.
If
anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
Likewise, a
competitor does not receive the crown unless he competes according to the rules.
Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil
doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
for which I suffer to the extent of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained!
Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people; He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself.
For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the
testator liveth.
because a will does not take effect until the one who made it has died; it cannot be executed while he is still alive.
Let no man say when he is
tempted, I am
tempted of God: for God cannot be
tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
But be ye
doers of the word, and not hearers only,
deceiving your own
selves.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a
doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
For
anyone who hears the word but
does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror,
But
whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a
forgetful hearer, but a
doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a
forgetful hearer, but an effective
doer—he will be blessed in what he
does.
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
If
anyone considers himself religious and yet
does not
bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless.
And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what
doth it profit?
If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou
doest well: the devils also believe, and
tremble.
You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and
shudder.
Such wisdom
does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual,
demonic.
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a
doer of the law, but a judge.
Brothers, do not
slander one another.
Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a
practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
Consequently, he does not live out his remaining time on earth for human passions, but for the will of God.
The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so
doth Marcus my son.
The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does my son Mark.
In their
greed, these false teachers will
exploit you with
deceptive words. The longstanding
verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction
does not sleep.
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if
anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a
liar, and the truth is not in him.
If
anyone says, “I know Him,” but
does not keep His commandments, he is a
liar, and the truth is not in him.
But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not
whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
But
whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He
does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
And the world passeth away, and the
lust thereof: but he that
doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
The world is passing away, along with its desires; but
whoever does the will of God remains
forever.
Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Whoever denies the Son
does not have the Father, but
whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.
Let that therefore
abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father.
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
If you know that He is righteous, you also know that
everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
Little children, let no man
deceive you: he that
doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
Little children, let no one
deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil:
whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil:
Anyone who
does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is
anyone who
does not love his brother.
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death.
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life
abiding in him.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life
does not reside in a murderer.
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of
antichrist,
whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
and every spirit that
does not
confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the
antichrist, which you have heard is coming and which is already in the world at this time.
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us.
Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
We are from God.
Whoever knows God listens to us;
whoever is not from God
does not
listen to us. That is how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of
deception.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Whoever does not love
does not know God, because God is love.
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a
liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
If
anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a
liar. For
anyone who
does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a
liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him;
whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a
liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
Whoever has the Son has life;
whoever does not have the Son of God
does not have life.
All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.
We know that
whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is
begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
We know that
anyone born of God
does not keep on
sinning; the One who was born of God protects him, and the evil one cannot touch him.
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
Anyone who runs
ahead without remaining in the teaching of Christ
does not have God.
Whoever remains in His teaching has both the Father and the Son.
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither
bid him God speed:
If
anyone comes to you but
does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home or even
greet him.
Beloved, thou
doest faithfully
whatsoever thou
doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
Beloved, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, and especially since they are strangers to you.
Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he
doeth,
prating against us with
malicious words: and not content
therewith, neither
doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
So if I come, I will call attention to his
malicious slander against us. And unsatisfied with that, he refuses to
welcome the brothers and forbids those who want to do so, even putting them out of the church.
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
Beloved, do not
imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who
does good is of God; the one who
does evil has not seen God.
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
And the second beast performed great signs to cause even fire from heaven to come down to earth in the presence of the people.
And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while.
With her there is no accepting of persons or rewards; but she doeth the things that are just, and refraineth from all unjust and wicked things; and all men do well like of her works.
Therefore to the intent that we might give knowledge unto thee by writing, we demanded of them who were the chief doers, and we required of them the names in writing of their principal men.
For I have seen how thou sufferest them
sinning, and hast
spared wicked
doers: and hast destroyed thy people, and hast preserved thine enemies, and hast not
signified it.
Let not the wages of any man, which hath wrought for thee,
tarry with thee, but give him it out of hand: for if thou serve God, he will also repay thee: be
circumspect my son, in all things thou
doest, and be wise in all thy conversation.
Wherefore now, my son, consider what
alms doeth, and how righteousness
doth deliver. When he had said these things, he gave up the ghost in the bed, being an hundred and eight and fifty years old; and he buried him honourably.
When thou
wilt do good know to whom thou
doest it; so shalt thou be
thanked for thy benefits.
And if he doeth good, he doeth it unwillingly; and at the last he will declare his wickedness.
What good
doeth the offering unto an
idol? for neither can it eat nor smell: so is he that is
persecuted of the Lord.
Whoso bringeth an offering of the goods of the poor
doeth as one that killeth the son before his father’s eyes.
