If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another
hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the
hated; and if the
firstborn son be hers that was
hated:
If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved, and both bear him sons, but the unloved wife has the
firstborn son,
Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to
inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved
firstborn before the son of the
hated, which is indeed the
firstborn:
when that man assigns his inheritance to his sons he must not
appoint the son of the beloved wife as the
firstborn over the son of the unloved wife.
But he shall acknowledge the son of the
hated for the
firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the
firstborn is his.
Instead, he must acknowledge the
firstborn, the son of his unloved wife, by giving him a double portion of all that he has. For that son is the
firstfruits of his father’s strength; the right of the
firstborn belongs to him.
Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is
defiled; for that is
abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
then the husband who
divorced her
first may not remarry her after she has been
defiled, for that is an
abomination to the LORD. You must not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
And it shall be, that the
firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
The
first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead brother, so that his name will not be
blotted out from Israel.
That thou shalt take of the
first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a
basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name there.
you are to take some of the
firstfruits of all your produce from the soil of the land that the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a
basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name,
And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O LORD, hast given me. And thou shalt set it before the LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God:
And now, behold, I have brought the
firstfruits of the land that You, O LORD, have given me.” Then you are to place the
basket before the LORD your God and bow down before Him.
His glory is like the
firstling of his
bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall
push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of
Manasseh.
His majesty is like a
firstborn bull, and his horns are like those of a wild ox. With them he will
gore the nations, even to the ends of the earth. Such are the myriads of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of
Manasseh.”

first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the

And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his
firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city,
Jericho; at the cost of his
firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”
And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the
first, that we will
flee before them,
Then I and all the troops with me will advance on the city. When they come out against us as they did the
first time, we will
flee from them.
(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They
flee before us, as at the
first: therefore we will
flee before them.
They will pursue us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘The Israelites are running away from us as they did before.’ So as we
flee from them,
And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
The
first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin. Their
allotted territory lay between the tribes of Judah and Joseph:
And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of
Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
The
first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah,
Simeon, and Benjamin.

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the
Canaanites first, to fight against them?
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the
first to go up and fight for us against the
Canaanites?”
And he said unto Jether his
firstborn, Up, and
slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
So he said to Jether, his
firstborn, “Get up and kill them.” But the young man did not draw his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.

And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up
first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be
first,” the LORD replied.
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in
array in the place where they put themselves in
array the
first day.
But the
Israelite army took courage and again took their battle positions in the same place where they had
arrayed themselves on the
first day.
And the children of Benjamin said, They are
smitten down before us, as at the
first. But the children of Israel said, Let us
flee, and draw them from the city unto the
highways.
“We are defeating them as before,” said the Benjamites. But the Israelites said, “Let us retreat and draw them away from the city
onto the roads.”
And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to
smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are
smitten down before us, as in the

And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”

firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.

Did I then begin to
enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king
impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
Was that day the
first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king
accuse your servant or any of my father’s household, for your servant knew nothing of this whole
affair—not in part or in whole.”

“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
Behold, he is
hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the
first, that
whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow
Absalom.
Surely by now he is hiding in a cave or some other
location. If some of your troops fall
first,
whoever hears of it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow
Absalom.’
And the
watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is
tidings in his mouth. And he came
apace, and drew near.
So he called out and told the king. “If he is alone,” the king replied, “he bears good news.” As the
first runner drew near,
And the
watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of
Ahimaaz the son of
Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good
tidings.
The
watchman said, “The
first man appears to me to be running like
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok.” “This is a good man,” said the king. “He comes with good news.”
For thy servant
doth know that I have
sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the
first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.
For your servant knows that I have
sinned, so here I am
today as the
first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.”
And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye
despise us, that our advice should not be
first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
“We have ten shares in the king,” answered the men of Israel, “so we have more claim to David than you. Why then do you
despise us? Were we not the
first to speak of restoring our king?” But the men of Judah pressed even harder than the men of Israel.

first woman insisted, “No, the dead one is yours and the living one is mine.” So they
argued before the king.
Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise
