He despairs of his return from darkness; he is marked for the sword.
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
He wanders about as food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
For he stretcheth out
his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the
Almighty.
For he has stretched out
his hand against God and has
vaunted himself against the
Almighty,
He runneth upon him, even on
his neck, upon the thick
bosses of
his bucklers:
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh,
He shall not be rich, neither shall
his substance continue, neither shall he
prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
He will no longer be rich;
his wealth will not
endure.
His possessions will not overspread the land.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
Let not him that is
deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be
his recompence.
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
It will be paid in full before
his time, and
his branch will not
flourish.
He shall
shake off
his unripe
grape as the vine, and shall cast off
his flower as the olive.
He will be like a vine
stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.
He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.
His anger has
torn me and opposed me; He gnashes
His teeth at me. My
adversary pierces me with
His eyes.
I was at ease, but he hath broken me
asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and
shaken me to pieces, and set me up for
his mark.
His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my
reins asunder, and
doth not
spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.
His archers
surround me. He pierces my
kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground.

plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for

plead with God as he pleads with
his neighbor!

flattery to
his friends, even the eyes of
his children shall fail.
If a man denounces his friends for a price, the eyes of his children will fail.

Yet a righteous one holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger.
He teareth himself in
his anger: shall the earth be
forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of
his place?
You who
tear yourself in anger— should the earth be
forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place?
Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the
spark of
his fire shall not
shine.
Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is
extinguished; the flame of
his fire does not
glow.
The light shall be dark in
his tabernacle, and
his candle shall be put out with him.
The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out.
The steps of
his strength shall be
straitened, and
his own counsel shall cast him down.
For he is cast into a net by
his own feet, and he walketh upon a
snare.
For
his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its
mesh.
The
gin shall take him by the
heel, and the
robber shall prevail against him.
The
snare is laid for him in the ground, and a
trap for him in the way.
A
noose is hidden in the ground, and a
trap lies in
his path.
Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.
His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

his skin; the
firstborn of death devours
his limbs.

torn from the shelter of
his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors.

his tabernacle, because it is none of
his:

his habitation.

astonied at
his day, as they that went before were
affrighted.

kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of
his enemies.

encamp round about my tabernacle.
His troops advance together; they construct a
ramp against me and
encamp around my tent.

his excellency mount up to the heavens, and
his head reach unto the clouds;
Though
his arrogance reaches the heavens, and
his head touches the clouds,
Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?
he will perish
forever, like
his own dung; those who had seen him will ask, ‘Where is he?’
The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.
The eye that saw him will see him no more, and his place will no longer behold him.

vigor that fills
his bones will lie down with him in the dust.
Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;
Though evil is sweet in his mouth and he conceals it under his tongue,
Though he
spare it, and
forsake it not; but keep it still within
his mouth:
though he cannot bear to let it go and keeps it in his mouth,
Yet
his meat in
his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.
yet in
his stomach
his food
sours into the
venom of cobras within him.
He hath
swallowed down riches, and he shall
vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of
his belly.
He
swallows wealth but vomits it out; God will force it from
his stomach.
That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not
swallow it down: according to
his substance shall the
restitution be, and he shall not
rejoice therein.
He must return the fruit of
his labor without
consuming it; he cannot enjoy the profits of
his trading.
Surely he shall not feel quietness in
his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired.
There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods.
Nothing is left for him to
consume; thus
his prosperity will not
endure.
In the
fulness of
his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.
In the midst of
his plenty, he will be distressed; the full force of misery will come upon him.
When he is about to fill
his belly, God shall cast the
fury of
his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

hid in
his secret places: a fire not
blown shall
consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in
his tabernacle.

consume him and
devour what is left in
his tent.

oft is the
candle of the wicked put out! and how
oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in
his anger.

apportion destruction?

his behavior to
his face? Who repays him for what he has done?

My feet have followed in His tracks; I have kept His way without turning aside.

I have not departed from the command of
His lips; I have
treasured the words of
His mouth more than my daily bread.

oppose Him? He does what He desires.

reap every one
his corn in the field: and they gather the
vintage of the wicked.

fodder in the fields and
glean the vineyards of the wicked.

adulterer waiteth for the
twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth
his face.

his sight.

burst under their own weight.

his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the
thunder of

thunder of
His power?”
