And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the
tiling with his
couch into the midst before Jesus.
but they could not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof and lowered him on his
mat through the
tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to
forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the
palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy
couch, and go into thine house.
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to
forgive sins...” He said to the
paralytic, “I tell you, get up,
pick up your
mat, and go home.”
And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will
tear the new garment as well, and the
patch from the new will not
match the old.
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,
Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the
Zealot;
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are
choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are
choked by the
worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not
mature.
And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
Then Jesus told him, “Get up,
pick up your
mat, and walk.”
And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
Immediately the man was made well, and he
picked up his
mat and began to walk. Now this happened on the Sabbath day,
The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
so the Jews said to the man who had been
healed, “This is the Sabbath! It is unlawful for you to carry your
mat.”
He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘
Pick up your
mat and walk.’”
And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas,
Bartholomew, and
Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and
Judas the brother of James.
When they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas,
Bartholomew and
Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the
Zealot, and
Judas son of James.
So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and
Matthias.
And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon
Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to
Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
You have no part or share in our ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
And Peter said unto him,
Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.
“
Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you! Get up and put away your
mat.” Immediately
Aeneas got up,
But Peter
rehearsed the
matter from the beginning, and
expounded it by order unto them, saying,
But Peter began and explained to them the whole
sequence of events:
And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
So the apostles and elders met to look into this matter.
And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this
matter.
When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to
mock him, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this
topic.”
And when Paul was now about to open his mouth,
Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a
matter of wrong or wicked
lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:
But just as Paul was about to speak,
Gallio told the Jews, “If this
matter involved a
wrongdoing or
vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to hear your
complaint.
But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
But since it is a dispute about words and names and your own law, settle it
yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of such things.”
So if
Demetrius and his fellow
craftsmen have a
complaint against
anyone, the courts are open and proconsuls are available. Let them bring charges against one another there.
But if ye
enquire any thing concerning other
matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
But if you are seeking anything beyond this, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
And when
Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he
deferred them, and said, When
Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the
uttermost of your
matter.
Then
Felix, who was well informed about the Way,
adjourned the hearing and said, “When
Lysias the commander comes, I will decide your case.”
And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
Since I was at a loss as to how to
investigate these
matters, I asked if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges.
For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
For the king knows about these
matters, and I can speak freely to him. I am
confident that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.
But he is a
Jew, which is one inwardly; and
circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
No, a man is a
Jew because he is one inwardly, and
circumcision is a
matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come from men, but from God.
Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
Therefore it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Hast thou faith? have it to
thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
Keep your belief about such
matters between
yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not
condemn himself by what he approves.
It hath pleased them
verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in
carnal things.
They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual blessings, they are
obligated to minister to them with
material blessings.
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to
nought:
Among the
mature, however, we speak a message of wisdom—but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.
Dare any of you, having a
matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
If any of you has a
grievance against another, how
dare he go to law before the unrighteous instead of before the saints!
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge
trivial cases?
If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
So if you need to settle
everyday matters, do you
appoint as judges those of no standing in the church?
Now concerning the things
whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
Now for the
matters you wrote about: It is good to
abstain from sexual relations.
If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall
reap your
carnal things?
If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much for us to
reap a
material harvest from you?
And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto
condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
If
anyone is
hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining
matters.
Brethren, be not children in understanding:
howbeit in
malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be
mature.
For behold this
selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you,
yea, what clearing of
yourselves,
yea, what
indignation,
yea, what fear,
yea, what
vehement desire,
yea, what zeal,
yea, what
revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this
matter.
Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear
yourselves, what
indignation, what
alarm, what longing, what zeal, what
vindication! In every way you have proved
yourselves to be innocent in this
matter.
And
herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our
boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready:
But I am sending the brothers in order that our
boasting about you in this
matter should not prove empty, but that you will be prepared, just as I said.
Therefore I thought it necessary to
exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up
beforehand your
bounty,
whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a
matter of
bounty, and not as of
covetousness.
So I thought it necessary to
urge the brothers to visit you
beforehand and make arrangements for the
bountiful gift you had promised. This way, your gift will be prepared generously and not begrudgingly.
I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.
Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak
foolishly,) I am bold also.
This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.
This is the third time I am coming to you. “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”
But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (
whatsoever they were, it maketh no
matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
But as for the highly esteemed—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show
favoritism—those leaders added nothing to me.
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the
stature of the
fulness of Christ:
until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we
mature to the full measure of the
stature of Christ.
Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall
reveal even this unto you.
All of us who are
mature should embrace this point of view. And if you think differently about some issue, God will
reveal this to you as well.
Now ye
Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from
Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
And as you
Philippians know, in the early days of the gospel, when I left
Macedonia, no church but you partnered with me in the
matter of giving and receiving.
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring
fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. He is always
wrestling in prayer for you, so that you may stand
mature and fully
assured in the full will of God.
and no one should ever
violate or
exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will
avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly
warned you.
And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
and to
aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own
matters, and to work with your own hands, as we
instructed you.
Meditate upon these things; give
thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Be
diligent in these
matters and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
Every high priest is appointed from among men to represent them in matters relating to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to
discern both good and evil.
But solid food is for the
mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to
maturity, not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,
But let
patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Allow
perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be
mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a
spark sets a great forest
ablaze.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a
thief, or as an
evildoer, or as a
busybody in other men’s
matters.
But these, as natural
brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
These men are like
irrational animals, creatures of
instinct, born to be captured and destroyed. They
blaspheme in
matters they do not understand, and like such creatures, they too will be destroyed.
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable
wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
He writes this way in all his letters, speaking in them about such
matters. Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people
distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
And
forasmuch as the things pertaining to the temple are now in hand, we think it meet not to neglect such a
matter,
For both they and their sons have married with their daughters, and the holy seed is mixed with the strange people of the land; and from the beginning of this matter the rulers and the great men have been partakers of this iniquity.
And with them the rulers and judges of every place, till we turn away the wrath of the Lord from us for this matter.
Then
Jonathan the son of Azael and Ezechias the son of Theocanus accordingly took this
matter upon them: and Mosollam and
Levis and Sabbatheus helped them.
And
Esdras the priest chose unto him the principal men of their families, all by name: and in the first day of the tenth month they sat together to examine the
matter.
Of the sons of Jesus the son of Josedec, and his brethren;
Matthelas and
Eleazar, and Joribus and Joadanus.
Of the sons of Ela;
Matthanias,
Zacharias, and Hierielus, and Hieremoth, and Aedias.
And of the sons of Addi; Naathus, and Moosias, Lacunus, and Naidus, and Mathanias, and Sesthel, Balnuus, and Manasseas.
And of the sons of Asom; Altaneus, and
Matthias, and Baanaia, Eliphalet, and Manasses, and Semei.
And there stood up by him
Mattathias, Sammus,
Ananias, Azarias, Urias, Ezecias, Balasamus, upon the right hand:
But my neighbours
mocked me, and said, This man is not yet afraid to be put to death for this
matter: who fled away; and yet, lo, he burieth the dead again.
So he communicated the
matter with Raguel: and Raguel said to Tobias, Eat and drink, and make
merry:
Now as concerning the matter, which Achior did speak in thy council, we have heard his words; for the men of Bethulia saved him, and he declared unto them all that he had spoken unto thee.
For I remember a dream which I saw concerning these matters, and nothing thereof hath failed.
Esther, what is the
matter? I am thy brother, be of good
cheer:
For thy
Almighty hand, that made the world of
matter without form, wanted not means to send among them a multitude of bears or fierce lions,
For this man, that of earthly
matter maketh brittle vessels and
graven images, knoweth himself to
offend above all others.
Be not curious in unnecessary matters: for more things are shewed unto thee than men understand.
Be not ignorant of any thing in a great matter or a small.
Marry thy daughter, and so shalt thou have performed a
weighty matter: but give her to a man of understanding.
Strive not in a
matter that concerneth thee not; and sit not in judgment with sinners.
My son,
meddle not with many
matters: for if thou
meddle much, thou shalt not be innocent; and if thou follow after, thou shalt not obtain, neither shalt thou escape by
fleeing.
He that telleth a tale to a
fool speaketh to one in a
slumber: when he hath told his tale, he will say, What is the
matter?
Many have
sinned for a small
matter; and he that seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away.
As the
matter of the fire is, so it burneth: and as a man’s strength is, so is his wrath; and according to his riches his anger riseth; and the stronger they are which
contend, the more they will be inflamed.
Neither
consult with a woman touching her of whom she is
jealous; neither with a
coward in
matters of war; nor with a merchant concerning exchange; nor with a
buyer of selling; nor with an
envious man of
thankfulness; nor with an
unmerciful man touching kindness; nor with the
slothful for any work; nor with an
hireling for a year of finishing work; nor with an idle servant of much business:
hearken not unto these in any
matter of counsel.
But when the elders had declared their
matter, the servants were greatly
ashamed: for there was never such a report made of
Susanna.
In those days arose
Mattathias the son of John, the son of
Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and dwelt in Modin.
And when many of Israel came unto them, Mattathias also and his sons came together.
Then answered the king’s officers, and said to Mattathias on this wise, Thou art a ruler, and an honourable and great man in this city, and strengthened with sons and brethren:
Then Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice, Though all the nations that are under the king’s dominion obey him, and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers, and give consent to his commandments:
Which thing when
Mattathias saw, he was inflamed with zeal, and his
reins trembled, neither could he
forbear to
shew his anger according to judgment: wherefore he ran, and
slew him upon the altar.
And
Mattathias cried throughout the city with a loud voice, saying,
Whosoever is
zealous of the law, and maintaineth the covenant, let him follow me.
Now when
Mattathias and his friends understood
hereof, they
mourned for them right
sore.
Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars:
