Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
To many thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the less inheritance: to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.
Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
The
registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or
more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the
more ye shall give the
more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man’s inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall
inherit.
And you are to divide the land by lot according to your clans. Give a larger inheritance to a larger clan and a smaller inheritance to a smaller one. Whatever falls to each one by lot will be his. You will receive an inheritance according to the tribes of your fathers.
Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.
And then I will do to you what I had
planned to do to them.”
And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
The cities that you
apportion from the territory of the Israelites should be given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe:
more from a larger tribe and less from a smaller one.”
Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
You are not to accept a
ransom for the life of a murderer who deserves to die; he must surely be put to death.
(The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many
more as ye are, and
bless you, as he hath promised you!)
May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times over and
bless you as He has promised.
Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and
moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts
melt, saying: ‘The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the heavens. We even saw the descendants of the
Anakim there.’”
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
And the little ones you said would become
captives—your children who on that day did not know good from evil—will enter the land that I will give them, and they will possess it.
All these cities were
fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.
All these cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars, and there were many more unwalled villages.
But the LORD was
wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no
more unto me of this matter.
But the LORD was
angry with me on account of you, and He would not
listen to me. “That is enough,” the LORD said to me. “Do not speak to Me again about this matter.
These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will
consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any
more, then we shall die.
But now, why should we die? For this great fire will
consume us, and we will die, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?
You may say in your heart, “These nations are greater than we are; how can we drive them out?”
Moreover the LORD thy God will send the
hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.
Moreover, the LORD your God will send the
hornet against them until even the survivors hiding from you have perished.
Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the
Canaanites, which dwell in the
champaign over against
Gilgal, beside the plains of
Moreh?
Are not these mountains across the Jordan, west of the road toward the
sunset, in the land of the
Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite
Gilgal near the Oak of
Moreh?
And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.
And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no
more presumptuously.
Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will no longer
behave arrogantly.
But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses:
forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no
more that way.
But the king must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more horses, for the LORD has said, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in
Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any
more, that I die not.
This is what you asked of the LORD your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”
If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
and if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you
today, loving the LORD your God and walking in His ways at all times, then you are to add three
more cities to these three.
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
Then the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything so evil among you.
When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and
chariots, and a people
more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses,
chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem
vile unto thee.
He may receive no
more than forty lashes, lest your brother be beaten any
more than that and be
degraded in your sight.
And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.
Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:
All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the LORD your God and keep the commandments and statutes He gave you.
Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou
wast afraid of; and they shall
cleave unto thee.
He will
afflict you again with all the diseases you
dreaded in Egypt, and they will
cling to you.
And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way
whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no
more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for
bondmen and
bondwomen, and no man shall
buy you.
The LORD will return you to Egypt in ships by a route that I said you should never see again. There you will sell
yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will
buy you.”
And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
And the LORD your God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it. He will cause you to
prosper and multiply
more than your fathers.
And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
he said to them, “I am now a hundred and twenty years old; I am no longer able to come and go, and the LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’
For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD; and how much
more after my death?
For I know how
rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are already rebelling against the LORD while I am still alive, how much
more will you
rebel after my death!
Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands:
smite through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that
hate him, that they rise not again.
Bless his substance, O LORD, and accept the work of his hands.
Smash the loins of those who rise against him, and of his foes so they can rise no
more.”
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did
melt, neither did there remain any
more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we heard this, our hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any
more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And the
manna ceased on the
morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel
manna any
more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of
Canaan that year.
And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, the
manna ceased. There was no
more manna for the Israelites, so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of
Canaan.
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you any
more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were
more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no
more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves
more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even
more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And
Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the
fleece; let it now be dry only upon the
fleece, and upon all the ground let there be
dew.
Then
Gideon said to God, “Do not be
angry with me; let me speak one
more time. Please allow me one
more test with the
fleece. This time let it be dry, and the ground covered with
dew.”
Then Jerubbaal, who is
Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of
Moreh, in the valley.
Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) and all the men with him camped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of
Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of
Moreh.
Thus was
Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no
more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of
Gideon.
In this way
Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. So the land had rest for forty years in the days of
Gideon,
Moreover the children of
Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was
sore distressed.
The
Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was in deep distress.
Yet ye have
forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no
more.
But you have
forsaken Me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
But the angel of the LORD did no
more appear to
Manoah and to his wife. Then
Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.
And when the angel of the LORD did not appear again to
Manoah and his wife,
Manoah realized that it had been the angel of the LORD.
And her father said, I
verily thought that thou hadst utterly
hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.
“I was sure that you thoroughly
hated her,” said her father, “so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you. Is not her younger sister
more beautiful than she? Please take her instead.”
And
Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be
more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once
more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And
Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O God, just once
more, so that with one
vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were
more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed
more than he had killed in his life.
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of
Rimmon: and they
gleaned of them in the
highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and
slew two thousand men of them.
Then the Benjamites turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of
Rimmon, and Israel cut down 5,000 men on the roads. And they overtook them at Gidom and struck down 2,000
more.
And
Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any
more sons in my
womb, that they may be your husbands?
But
Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Are there still sons in my
womb to become your husbands?
Where thou
diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and
more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD
punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
Then Boaz said, “May the LORD
bless you, my daughter. You have shown
more kindness now than before, because you have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.
Moreover Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And she said, Let thine
handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no
more sad.
“May your
maidservant find favor with you,” said
Hannah. Then she went on her way, and she began eating again, and her face was no longer
downcast.
Talk no
more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
They that were full have
hired out themselves for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food, but the
starving hunger no
more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Each year his mother would make him a little
robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my
habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons
more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God
punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.”
So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped
invading the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
Moreover as for me, God
forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. And I will continue to teach you the good and right way.
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding camps of the Philistines now went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and
Jonathan.
How much
more, if
haply the people had eaten freely to day of the
spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
How much better it would have been if the troops had eaten freely
today from the
plunder they took from their enemies! Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been much greater?”
And Saul answered, God do so and
more also: for thou shalt surely die,
Jonathan.
And Saul declared, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if you,
Jonathan, do not surely die!”
And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor
repent: for he is not a man, that he should
repent.
Moreover, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind, for He is not a man, that He should change His mind.”
And Samuel came no
more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel
mourned for Saul: and the LORD
repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel
mourned for Saul, and the LORD
regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
David said
moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the
paw of the lion, and out of the
paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this
Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this
Philistine.” “Go,” said Saul, “and may the LORD be with you.”
And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
And from that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father’s house.
And Saul was very
wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have
more but the kingdom?
And Saul was
furious and resented this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What
more can he have but the kingdom?”
And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.
he grew even more afraid of David. So from then on Saul was David’s enemy.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself
more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was
more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they
prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they
prophesied also.
When this was reported to Saul, he sent
more messengers, but they began to
prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third time, and even they began to
prophesy.
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
The LORD do so and much
more to
Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will
shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
But if my father intends to bring evil on you, then may the LORD
punish me, and ever so severely, if I do not tell you and send you on your way in safety. May the LORD be with you, just as He has been with my father.
And as soon as the
lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they
kissed one another, and
wept one with another, until David exceeded.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone, fell facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and
Jonathan kissed each other and
wept together—though David
wept more.
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the
more at this time.”
Did I then begin to
enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king
impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or
more.
Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king
accuse your servant or any of my father’s household, for your servant knew nothing of this whole
affair—not in part or in whole.”
And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
But David’s men said to him, “Look, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have rewarded me with good, though I have rewarded you with evil.
So and
more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that
pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
May God
punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one of Nabal’s men
survive until morning.”
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or
more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my son David: for I will no
more do thee
harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall
despair of me, to seek me any
more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
David, however, said to himself, “One of these days now I will be swept away by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop searching for me all over Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
And it was told Saul that David was fled to
Gath: and he sought no
more again for him.
And when Saul learned that David had fled to
Gath, he no longer searched for him.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am
sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no
more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to
morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. And the LORD will deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and
wept, until they had no
more power to
weep.
So David and the troops with him lifted up their voices and
wept until they had no strength left to
weep.
So
Joab blew a
trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no
more, neither fought they any
more.
So
Joab blew the ram’s horn, and all the troops stopped; they no longer pursued Israel or continued to fight.
So do God to
Abner, and
more also, except, as the LORD hath
sworn to David, even so I do to him;
May God
punish Abner, and ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the LORD has
sworn to him:
Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into
fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people
wept again over him.
Your hands were not bound, your feet were not
fettered. As a man falls before the wicked, so also you fell.” And all the people
wept over him even
more.
And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David
sware, saying, So do God to me, and
more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an oath, saying, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”
How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?
How much more, when wicked men kill a righteous man in his own house and on his own bed, shall I not now require his blood from your hands and remove you from the earth!”
And David took him
more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from
Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.
After he had arrived from
Hebron, David took
more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, and
more sons and daughters were born to him.
