And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every
herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had
not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was
not a man to till the ground.
Now no
shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field
sprouted; for the LORD God had
not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to
cultivate the ground.
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
The man gave names to all the
livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were
not ashamed.
And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were
not ashamed.
Now the serpent was more
subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman,
Yea, hath God said, Ye shall
not eat of every tree of the garden?
Now the serpent was more
crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must
not eat from any tree in the garden?’”
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
“You will not surely die,” the serpent told her.
And he said, Who told thee that thou
wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree,
whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest
not eat?
“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast
hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt
not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And to Adam He said: “Because you have
listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you
not to eat,
cursed is the ground because of you; through
toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
But unto
Cain and to his offering he had
not respect. And
Cain was very
wroth, and his countenance fell.
but He had no regard for
Cain and his offering. So
Cain became very
angry, and his countenance fell.
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
If you do what is right, will you
not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is
crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
And the LORD said unto
Cain, Where is
Abel thy brother? And he said, I know
not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
And the LORD said to
Cain, “Where is your brother
Abel?” “I do
not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
When thou tillest the ground, it shall
not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a
fugitive and a
vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a
fugitive and a
wanderer on the earth.”
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore
whosoever slayeth
Cain,
vengeance shall be taken on him
sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon
Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
And
Enoch walked with God: and he was
not; for God took him.
Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God had taken him away.
And the LORD said, My spirit shall
not always
strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
So the LORD said, “My Spirit will
not contend with man
forever, for he is
mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”
Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
You are to take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its
mate; a pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its
mate;
Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
The clean and unclean animals, the birds, and everything that crawls along the ground
And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the
dove; which returned
not again unto him any more.
And
Noah waited seven more days and sent out the
dove again, but this time she did
not return to him.
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will
not again
curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again
smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
When the LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I
curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
While the earth remaineth,
seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall
not cease.
As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall never cease.”
But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
But you must
not eat meat with its
lifeblood still in it.
And
Shem and
Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw
not their father’s nakedness.
Then
Shem and
Japheth took a garment and placed it across their shoulders, and walking backward, they covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned away so that they did
not see their father’s nakedness.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
“Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then
nothing they
devise will be beyond them.
Go to, let us go down, and there
confound their language, that they may
not understand one another’s speech.
Come, let Us go down and
confuse their language, so that they will
not understand one another’s speech.”
And Pharaoh called
Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why
didst thou
not tell me that she was thy wife?
So Pharaoh summoned
Abram and asked, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?
And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to
coexist.
Is
not the whole land before thee? separate
thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou
wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Is
not the whole land before you? Now separate
yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
That I will
not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will
not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made
Abram rich:
that I will
not accept even a thread, or a
strap of a
sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I have made
Abram rich.’
Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre; let them take their portion.
I will accept
nothing but what my men have eaten and the share for the men who went with me—Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre. They may take their portion.”
After these things the word of the LORD came unto
Abram in a vision, saying, Fear
not,
Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
After these events, the word of the LORD came to
Abram in a vision: “Do
not be afraid,
Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall
not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will
not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
So
Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the
halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did
not cut in half.
And he said unto
Abram, Know of a
surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is
not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall
afflict them four hundred years;
Then the LORD said to
Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is
not their own, and they will be
enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
But in the fourth generation they shall come
hither again: for the iniquity of the
Amorites is
not yet full.
In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the
Amorites is
not yet complete.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
And he that is eight days old shall be
circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is
not of thy seed.
Generation after generation, every male must be
circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased from a foreigner—even those who are
not your offspring.
But if any male is
not circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt
not call her name Sarai, but
Sarah shall her name be.
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, do
not call her Sarai, for her name is to be
Sarah.
And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
“My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.
But
Sarah was afraid, so she denied it and said, “I did
not laugh.” “No,” replied the LORD, “but you did
laugh.”
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
I will go down to see if their actions fully
justify the outcry that has reached Me. If
not, I will find out.”
Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city:
wilt thou also destroy and
not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
What if there are fifty righteous ones in the city? Will You really
sweep it away and
not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there?
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to
slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall
not the Judge of all the earth do right?
Far be it from You to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”
Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous:
wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will
not destroy it.
suppose the fifty righteous ones lack five. Will You destroy the whole city for the lack of five?” He replied, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.”
And he spake unto him yet again, and said,
Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will
not do it for forty’s sake.
Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.”
And he said unto him, Oh let
not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will
not do it, if I find thirty there.
Then Abraham said, “May the Lord
not be
angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will
not do it.”
And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord:
Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will
not destroy it for twenty’s sake.
And Abraham said, “Now that I have
ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the twenty, I will
not destroy it.”
And he said, Oh let
not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will
not destroy it for ten’s sake.
Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord
not be
angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will
not destroy it.”
And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
“Please, my brothers,” he
pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never
slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do
not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do
not look back, and do
not stop
anywhere on the plain!
Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
Behold now, this city is near to
flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it
not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
Look, there is a town nearby where I can
flee, and it is a small place. Please let me
flee there—is it
not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
“Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will
not demolish the town you indicate.
And the
firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is
not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us, as is the custom over all the earth.
And they made their father drink wine that night: and the
firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived
not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
So that night they got their father
drunk with wine, and the
firstborn went in and
slept with her father; he was
not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
So again that night they got their father
drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and
slept with him; he was
not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
But
Abimelech had
not come near her: and he said, Lord,
wilt thou
slay also a righteous nation?
Now
Abimelech had
not gone near her, so he replied, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?
Said he
not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the
integrity of my heart and
innocency of my hands have I done this.
Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the
integrity of my heart and the
innocence of my hands.”
And God said unto him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee from
sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee
not to touch her.
Then God said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from
sinning against Me. That is why I did
not let you touch her.
Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet; he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, be aware that you will surely die—you and all who belong to you.”
Then
Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I
offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought
not to be done.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I
sinned against you, that you have brought such
tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should
not be done.”
And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is
not in this place; and they will
slay me for my wife’s sake.
Abraham replied, “I thought to myself, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place. They will kill me on account of my wife.’
And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father—though not the daughter of my mother—and she became my wife.
Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this
bondwoman and her son: for the son of this
bondwoman shall
not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
and she said to Abraham, “
Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
And God said unto Abraham, Let it
not be
grievous in thy sight because of the
lad, and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God said to Abraham, “Do
not be distressed about the boy and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me
not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
And God heard the voice of the
lad; and the angel of God called
Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee,
Hagar? fear
not; for God hath heard the voice of the
lad where he is.
Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to
Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong,
Hagar? Do
not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
Now therefore
swear unto me here by God that thou
wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast
sojourned.
Now, therefore,
swear to me here before God that you will
not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
And
Abimelech said, I
wot not who hath done this thing: neither
didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.
Abimelech replied, “I do
not know who has done this. You did
not tell me, so I have
not heard about it until
today.”
And he said, Lay
not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast
not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do
not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have
not withheld your only son from me.”
And said, By myself have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast
not withheld thy son, thine only son:
saying, “By Myself I have
sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have
not withheld your only son,
And I will make thee
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt
not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
and I will have you
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will
not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
And the servant said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will
not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And Abraham said unto him,
Beware thou that thou bring
not my son thither again.
Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
And the
damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Now the
girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had
not had relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her
jar, and came up again.
And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
Meanwhile, the man watched her silently to see whether or not the LORD had made his journey a success.
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has
not withheld His kindness and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will
not eat, until I have told mine
errand. And he said, Speak on.
Then a meal was set before the man, but he said, “I will
not eat until I have told you what I came to say.” So
Laban said, “Please speak.”
And my master made me
swear, saying, Thou shalt
not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
My master made me
swear an oath and said, ‘You shall
not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites in whose land I dwell,
And I said unto my master,
Peradventure the woman will
not follow me.
Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’
Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.
And when you go to my kindred, if they refuse to give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”
And he said unto them, Hinder me
not, seeing the LORD hath
prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD has made my journey a success. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.”
And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you.
And he removed from thence, and
digged another well; and for that they
strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
He moved on from there and
dug another well, and they did
not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth and said, “At last the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear
not, for I am with thee, and will
bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.
and that night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do
not be afraid, for I am with you. I will
bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.”
That thou
wilt do us no
hurt, as we have
not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee
nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
that you will
not harm us, just as we have
not harmed you but have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were
dim, so that he could
not see, he called
Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called his older son
Esau and said to him, “My son.” “Here I am,”
Esau replied.
And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:
“Look,” said Isaac, “I am now old, and I do not know the day of my death.
My father
peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a
deceiver; and I shall bring a
curse upon me, and
not a blessing.
What if my father touches me? Then I would be revealed to him as a
deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a
curse rather than a blessing.”
And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son
Esau or
not.
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son
Esau, or
not?”
And he
discerned him
not, because his hands were
hairy, as his brother
Esau’s hands: so he blessed him.
Isaac did
not recognize him, because his hands were
hairy like those of his brother
Esau; so he blessed him.
And he said, Is
not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath
supplanted me these two times: he took away my
birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou
not reserved a blessing for me?
So
Esau declared, “Is he
not rightly named Jacob? For he has
cheated me twice. He took my
birthright, and now he has taken my blessing.” Then he asked, “
Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt
not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan.
So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do
not take a wife from the
Canaanite women,” he commanded.
When
Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-
aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt
not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan;
Now
Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-
aram to take a wife there, commanding him, “Do
not marry a
Canaanite woman,”
