And
Esau seeing that the daughters of
Canaan pleased
not Isaac his father;
And seeing that his father Isaac disapproved of the
Canaanite women,
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places
whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will
not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
And Jacob
awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it
not.
When Jacob
woke up, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”
And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
“Look,” said Jacob, “it is still broad
daylight; it is
not yet time to gather the
livestock. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”
And
Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for
nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
Laban said to him, “Just because you are my relative, should you work for
nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”
And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to
Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did
not I serve with thee for
Rachel? wherefore then hast thou
beguiled me?
When morning came, there was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob said to
Laban. “Wasn’t it for
Rachel that I served you? Why have you
deceived me?”
And
Laban said, It must
not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the
firstborn.
Laban replied, “It is
not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older.
And when
Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children,
Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
When
Rachel saw that she was
not bearing any children for Jacob, she
envied her sister. “Give me children, or I will die!” she said to Jacob.
And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it
not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said
Rachel, “he may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt
not give me any thing: if thou
wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
“What can I give you?”
Laban asked. “You do
not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on
shepherding and keeping your flocks.
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is
not speckled and
spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are
not speckled or
spotted, or any lambs that are
not dark-colored, they will be considered
stolen.”
And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the
ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of
Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them
not unto
Laban’s cattle.
Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the
streaked dark-colored sheep in
Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did
not put them with
Laban’s animals.
But when the cattle were feeble, he put them
not in: so the feebler were
Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
But if the animals were weak, he did
not set out the branches. So the weaker animals went to
Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob.
And Jacob
beheld the countenance of
Laban, and, behold, it was
not toward him as before.
And Jacob saw from the countenance of
Laban that his attitude toward him had changed.
And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
and he told them, “I can see from your father’s countenance that his attitude toward me has changed; but the God of my father has been with me.
And your father hath
deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him
not to
hurt me.
And although he has
cheated me and changed my wages ten times, God has
not allowed him to
harm me.
Are we
not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite
devoured also our money.
Are we
not regarded by him as outsiders?
Not only has he sold us, but he has certainly
squandered what was paid for us.
And Jacob
stole away unawares to
Laban the
Syrian, in that he told him
not that he fled.
And God came to
Laban the
Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take
heed that thou speak
not to Jacob either good or bad.
But that night God came to
Laban the
Aramean in a dream and
warned him, “Be careful
not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”
Wherefore
didst thou
flee away secretly, and
steal away from me; and
didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with
mirth, and with songs, with
tabret, and with
harp?
Why did you run away secretly and
deceive me, without even telling me? I would have sent you away with joy and singing, with tambourines and harps.
And hast
not suffered me to
kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done
foolishly in so doing.
But you did
not even let me
kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. Now you have done a
foolish thing.
It is in the power of my hand to do you
hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me
yesternight, saying, Take thou
heed that thou speak
not to Jacob either good or bad.
I have power to do you great
harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful
not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’
With
whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him
not live: before our brethren
discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew
not that
Rachel had
stolen them.
If you find your gods with
anyone here, he shall
not live! In the presence of our relatives, see for
yourself if anything is yours, and take it back.” For Jacob did
not know that
Rachel had
stolen the idols.
And
Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the two maidservants’ tents; but he found them
not. Then went he out of Leah’s tent, and entered into
Rachel’s tent.
So
Laban went into Jacob’s tent, then Leah’s tent, and then the tents of the two maidservants, but he found
nothing. Then he left Leah’s tent and entered
Rachel’s tent.
Now
Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the
camel’s furniture, and sat upon them. And
Laban searched all the tent, but found them
not.
Now
Rachel had taken
Laban’s household idols, put them in the saddlebag of her
camel, and was sitting on them. And
Laban searched everything in the tent but found
nothing.
And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do
not be
angry that I cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period.” So
Laban searched, but could
not find the household idols.
This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flock.
That which was
torn of beasts I brought
not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand
didst thou require it, whether
stolen by day, or
stolen by night.
I did
not bring you anything
torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for what was
stolen by day or night.
Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine
affliction and the labour of my hands, and
rebuked thee
yesternight.
If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had
not been with me, surely by now you would have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my
affliction and the
toil of my hands, and last night He rendered judgment.”
This
heap be witness, and this
pillar be witness, that I will
not pass over this
heap to thee, and that thou shalt
not pass over this
heap and this
pillar unto me, for
harm.
I am
not worthy of the least of all the
mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
And when he saw that he prevailed
not against him, he touched the hollow of his
thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s
thigh was out of joint, as he
wrestled with him.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will
not let thee go, except thou
bless me.
Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is
daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will
not let you go unless you
bless me.”
Therefore the children of Israel eat
not of the
sinew which
shrank, which is upon the hollow of the
thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s
thigh in the
sinew that
shrank.
Therefore to this day the Israelites do
not eat the
tendon which is at the
socket of the
hip, because the
socket of Jacob’s
hip was struck near that
tendon.
And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were
grieved, and they were very
wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter; which thing ought
not to be done.
When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they returned from the field. They were filled with grief and
fury, because
Shechem had committed an
outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should
not be done.
But if ye will
not hearken unto us, to be
circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
But if you will
not agree to be
circumcised, then we will take our sister and go.”
And the young man
deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
The young man, who was the most respected of all his father’s household, did
not hesitate to
fulfill this request, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.
Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
Will
not their
livestock, their possessions, and all their animals become ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell among us.”
And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
As they set out, a terror from God fell over the surrounding cities, so that they did not pursue Jacob’s sons.
And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
And God said to him, “Though your name is Jacob, you will no longer be called Jacob. Instead, your name will be Israel.” So God named him Israel.
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the
midwife said unto her, Fear
not; thou shalt have this son also.
During her severe labor, the
midwife said to her, “Do
not be afraid, for you are having another son.”
For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.
For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together; the land where they stayed could
not support them because of their
livestock.
And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they
hated him, and could
not speak
peaceably unto him.
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they
hated him and could
not speak a kind word to him.
And Israel said unto Joseph, Do
not thy brethren feed the flock in
Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
Israel said to him, “Are
not your brothers pasturing the flocks at
Shechem? Get ready; I am sending you to them.” “I am ready,” Joseph replied.
And
Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us
not kill him.
When
Reuben heard this, he tried to
rescue Joseph from their hands. “Let us
not take his life,” he said.
And
Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
“Do
not shed his blood. Throw him into this pit in the wilderness, but do
not lay a hand on him.”
Reuben said this so that he could
rescue Joseph from their hands and return him to his father.
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
Come, let us sell him to the
Ishmaelites and
not lay a hand on him; for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And they agreed.
And
Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was
not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
When
Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was
not there, he
tore his clothes,
And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is
not; and I,
whither shall I go?
returned to his brothers, and said, “The boy is gone! What am I going to do?”
And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.
They sent the
robe of many colors to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s
robe or
not.”
And Onan knew that the seed should
not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he
spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
But Onan knew that the offspring would
not belong to him; so whenever he would sleep with his brother’s wife, he would
spill his seed on the ground so that he would
not produce offspring for his brother.
And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a
vail, and
wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was
not given unto him to wife.
she removed her widow’s garments, covered her face with a
veil to
disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had
not been given to him as a wife.
And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew
not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What
wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.
And Judah sent the
kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his
pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her
not.
Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no
harlot in this place.
So Hirah returned to Judah and said, “I could
not find her, and
furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No
shrine prostitute has been here.’”
And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this
kid, and thou hast
not found her.
“Let her keep the items,” Judah replied. “Otherwise we will become a
laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you could
not find her.”
And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Judah recognized the items and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.
And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did
not concern himself with anything except the food he
ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master
wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does
not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has
withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he
hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her.
And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside.
The keeper of the prison looked
not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to
prosper.
The
warden did
not concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no
interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do
not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
“We both had dreams,” they replied, “but there is no one to
interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
For indeed I was
stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done
nothing that they should put me into the
dungeon.
For I was
kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done
nothing for which they should have put me in this
dungeon.”
Yet did
not the chief
butler remember Joseph, but
forgat him.
The chief
cupbearer, however, did
not remember Joseph; he
forgot all about him.
And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.
“I myself cannot do it,” Joseph replied, “but God will give Pharaoh a sound answer.”
And when they had eaten them up, it could
not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I
awoke.
When they had
devoured them, however, no one could tell that they had done so; their appearance was as
ugly as it had been before. Then I
awoke.
And the
plenty shall
not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very
grievous.
The abundance in the land will not be remembered, since the famine that follows it will be so severe.
And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.
This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and
buy for us from thence; that we may live, and
not die.
“Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and
buy some for us, so that we may live and
not die.”
But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent
not with his brethren; for he said, Lest
peradventure mischief
befall him.
But Jacob did
not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “I am afraid that
harm might
befall him.”
And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.
And they said unto him,
Nay, my lord, but to
buy food are thy servants come.
“
Not so, my lord,” they replied. “Your servants have come to
buy food.
We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy servants are no
spies.
We are all sons of one man. Your servants are
honest men,
not spies.”
And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of
Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is
not.
But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of
Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”
Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall
not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come
hither.
And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be
verified, and ye shall
not die. And they did so.
Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words can be
verified, that you may
not die.” And to this they consented.
And they said one to another, We are
verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the
anguish of his soul, when he
besought us, and we would
not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his
anguish when he
pleaded with us, but we would
not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
And
Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I
not unto you, saying, Do
not sin against the child; and ye would
not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
And
Reuben responded, “Didn’t I tell you
not to sin against the boy? But you would
not listen. Now we must account for his blood!”
And they knew
not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an
interpreter.
They did
not realize that Joseph understood them, since there was an
interpreter between them.
And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no
spies:
We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is
not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of
Canaan.
We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of
Canaan.’
And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no
spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall
traffick in the land.
But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are
not spies but
honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the land.’”
And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye
bereaved of my children: Joseph is
not, and
Simeon is
not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.
Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons. Joseph is gone and
Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is going against me!”
And
Reuben spake unto his father, saying,
Slay my two sons, if I bring him
not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
Then
Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him.”
And he said, My son shall
not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief
befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
But Jacob replied, “My son will
not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any
harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to
Sheol in sorrow.”
And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly
protest unto us, saying, Ye shall
not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But Judah replied, “The man solemnly
warned us, ‘You will
not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’
But if thou
wilt not send him, we will
not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall
not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the
lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and
not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die—neither we, nor you, nor our children.
I will be
surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him
not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the
blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do
not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.
For except we had
lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.
If we had not delayed, we could have come and gone twice by now.”
And other money have we brought down in our hands to
buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
We have brought additional silver with us to
buy food. We do
not know who put our silver in our sacks.”
And he said, Peace be to you, fear
not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you
treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought
Simeon out unto them.
“It is fine,” said the
steward. “Do
not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, gave you the
treasure that was in your sacks. I received your silver.” Then he brought
Simeon out to them.
And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might
not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an
abomination unto the Egyptians.
They separately served Joseph, his brothers, and the Egyptians. They
ate separately because the Egyptians would
not eat with the Hebrews, since that was
detestable to them.
And when they were gone out of the city, and
not yet far off, Joseph said unto his
steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou
dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
They had
not gone far from the city when Joseph told his
steward, “Pursue the men at once, and when you overtake them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?
Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
Is this
not the cup my master drinks from and uses for
divination? What you have done is wicked!’”
And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God
forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.
And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done?
wot ye
not that such a man as I can certainly divine?
“What is this deed you have done?” Joseph declared. “Do you not know that a man like me can surely divine the truth?”
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do
not be
angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
