The LORD shall establish thee an holy
people unto himself, as he hath
sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.
The LORD will establish you as His holy
people, just as He has
sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
Then all the
peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will stand in
awe of you.
Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand.
Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, while your eyes grow
weary looking for them day after day, with no power in your hand.
The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only
oppressed and
crushed alway:
A
people you do not know will eat the produce of your land and of all your
toil. All your days you will be
oppressed and
crushed.
And the LORD shall
scatter thee among all
people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.
Then the LORD will
scatter you among all the nations, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known.
That he may establish thee to day for a
people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath
sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
and so that He may establish you
today as His
people, and He may be your God as He promised you and as He
swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Then men shall say, Because they have
forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:
And the people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.
And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this
people unto the land which the LORD hath
sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to
inherit it.
Then Moses called for Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and
courageous, for you will go with this
people into the land that the LORD
swore to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.
Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
Assemble the
people—men, women, children, and the foreigners within your gates—so that they may
listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and to follow carefully all the words of this law.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this
people will rise up, and go a
whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land,
whither they go to be among them, and will
forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest with your fathers, and these
people will rise up and
prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will
forsake Me and break the covenant I have made with them.
They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a
perverse and
crooked generation.
His
people have acted corruptly toward Him; the spot on them is not that of His children, but of a
perverse and
crooked generation.
Do ye thus requite the LORD, O
foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?
Is this how you repay the LORD, O
foolish and senseless
people? Is He not your Father and
Creator? Has He not made you and established you?
When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
For the LORD’S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.
But the LORD’s portion is His
people, Jacob His
allotted inheritance.
They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have
provoked me to anger with their
vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a
people; I will
provoke them to anger with a
foolish nation.
They have
provoked My jealousy by that which is not God; they have
enraged Me with their worthless idols. So I will make them
jealous by those who are not a
people; I will make them
angry by a nation without understanding.
For the LORD shall judge his
people, and
repent himself for his servants, when he
seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.
For the LORD will
vindicate His
people and have
compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one remains, slave or free.
Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all God’s angels worship Him.
Rejoice, O nations, with His
people; for He will
avenge the blood of His children. He will take
vengeance on His
adversaries and repay those who
hate Him; He will
cleanse His land and His
people.
And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the
people, he, and Hoshea the son of
Nun.
Then Moses came with Joshua son of
Nun and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the
people.
And die in the mount
whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy
people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount
Hor, and was gathered unto his
people:
And there on the mountain that you
climb, you will die and be gathered to your
people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount
Hor and was gathered to his
people.
Yea, he loved the
people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
Surely You love the people; all the holy ones are in Your hand, and they sit down at Your feet; each receives Your words—
And he was king in
Jeshurun, when the heads of the
people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.
So the LORD became King in
Jeshurun when the leaders of the
people gathered, when the tribes of Israel came together.
And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.
And concerning Judah he said: “O LORD, hear the cry of Judah and bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause, but may You be a help against his foes.”
His glory is like the
firstling of his
bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall
push the
people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of
Manasseh.
His majesty is like a
firstborn bull, and his horns are like those of a wild ox. With them he will
gore the nations, even to the ends of the earth. Such are the myriads of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of
Manasseh.”
They shall call the
people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall
suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures
hid in the sand.
They will call the peoples to a mountain; there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness. For they will feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand.”
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the
people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O
people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy
excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt
tread upon their high places.
Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a
people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the sword in which you
boast. Your enemies will cower before you, and you shall
trample their high places.”
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, and cross over the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.
Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this
people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I
sware unto their fathers to give them.
Be strong and
courageous, for you shall give these
people the inheritance of the land that I
swore to their fathers I would give them.
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people:
Pass through the host, and command the
people, saying, Prepare you
victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.
“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
and commanded the
people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the
Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.
And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant and go on
ahead of the
people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went
ahead of them.
And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;
So when the
people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant
ahead of them.
That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an
heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the
people passed over right against
Jericho.
the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far
upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the
people crossed over opposite
Jericho.
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over the dry ground, until the entire nation had crossed the Jordan.
And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying,
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua,
Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,
For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.
Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until the
people had completed everything the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell them, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The
people hurried across,
And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.
and after
everyone had finished crossing, the priests with the ark of the LORD crossed in the sight of the
people.
And the
people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and
encamped in
Gilgal, in the east border of
Jericho.
On the tenth day of the first month the
people went up from the Jordan and camped at
Gilgal on the eastern border of
Jericho.
That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
He did this so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and so that you may always fear the LORD your God.”
And this is the cause why Joshua did
circumcise: All the
people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Now this is why Joshua
circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of war—had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.
Now all the
people that came out were
circumcised: but all the
people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not
circumcised.
Though all who had come out were
circumcised, none of those born in the wilderness on the journey from Egypt had been
circumcised.
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the
people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD
sware that he would not
shew them the land, which the LORD
sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
For the Israelites had
wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD
vowed never to let them see the land He had
sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
And it came to pass, when they had done
circumcising all the
people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
And after all the nation had been
circumcised, they stayed there in the camp until they were
healed.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the
people shall
shout with a great
shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the
people shall
ascend up every man straight before him.
And when there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you hear its sound, have all the
people give a mighty
shout. Then the wall of the city will
collapse and all your
people will charge straight into the city.”
And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.
And he told the
people, “Advance and march around the city, with the armed troops going
ahead of the ark of the LORD.”
And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the
people, that the seven priests bearing the seven
trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the LORD, and
blew with the
trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.
After Joshua had spoken to the
people, seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns before the LORD advanced and
blew the horns, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.
And Joshua had commanded the
people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I
bid you
shout; then shall ye
shout.
But Joshua had commanded the
people: “Do not give a battle cry or let your voice be heard; do not let one word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you to
shout. Then you are to
shout!”
So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and
lodged in the camp.
So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. And the people returned to the camp and spent the night there.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests
blew with the
trumpets, Joshua said unto the
people,
Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.
After the seventh time around, the priests
blew the horns, and Joshua commanded the
people, “
Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!
So the
people shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the
people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the
people shouted with a great
shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the
people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the
people shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the
people gave a great
shout, and the wall
collapsed. Then all the
people charged straight into the city and captured it.
And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the
people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and
smite Ai; and make not all the
people to labour thither; for they are but few.
On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need to send all the
people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack
Ai. Since the
people of
Ai are so few, you need not wear out all our
people there.”
So there went up thither of the
people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of
Ai.
So about three thousand men went up, but they fled before the men of
Ai.
And the men of
Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the
people melted, and became as water.
And the men of
Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the
people melted and became like water.
And Joshua said,
Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this
people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
“O, Lord GOD,” Joshua said, “why did You ever bring this
people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
Up,
sanctify the
people, and say,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an
accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the
accursed thing from among you.
Get up and
consecrate the
people, saying, ‘
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the
people of war with thee, and arise, go up to
Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of
Ai, and his
people, and his city, and his land:
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack
Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of
Ai, his
people, his city, and his land.
So Joshua arose, and all the
people of war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at night
And I, and all the
people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will
flee before them,
Then I and all the troops with me will advance on the city. When they come out against us as they did the first time, we will
flee from them.
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in
ambush, and abode between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of
Ai: but Joshua
lodged that night among the
people.
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place of
ambush and lay in wait between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of
Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the
people.
And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the
people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the
people to
Ai.
Joshua got up early the next morning and
mobilized his men, and he and the elders of Israel marched before them up to
Ai.
And all the
people, even the
people of war that were with him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.
And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
So the forces were stationed with the main camp to the north of the city and the rear guard to the west of the city. And that night Joshua went into the valley.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his
people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
And all the
people that were in
Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
Then all the men of
Ai were summoned to pursue them, and they followed Joshua and were drawn away from the city.
And when the men of
Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to
flee this way or that way: and the
people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
When the men of
Ai turned and looked back, the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. They could not escape in any direction, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now became the pursuers.
And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of
Ai.
A total of twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the
people of
Ai.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should
bless the
people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the
people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the
people of Israel.
And when the inhabitants of
Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto
Jericho and to
Ai,
But the
people of
Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to
Jericho and
Ai,
Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken
Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to
Jericho and her king, so he had done to
Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to
Ai and its king as he had done to
Jericho and its king—and that the
people of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
That they feared greatly, because
Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than
Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
So Adoni-zedek and his
people were greatly
alarmed, because
Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than
Ai, and all its men were mighty.
So Joshua ascended from
Gilgal, he, and all the
people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty men of
valor, came from
Gilgal.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the
people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took
vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of
Jashar? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.”
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one
dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the
people to the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of
Libnah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to
Libnah.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the
people to the sword, just as he had done to
Libnah.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and his
people, until he had left him none remaining.
At that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his
people, leaving no survivors.
And they took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to
Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the
people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at
Eglon; he devoted to destruction
Hebron and
everyone in it.
And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much
people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and
chariots very many.
So these kings came out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, along with a great number of horses and
chariots.
So Joshua came, and all the
people of war with him, against them by the waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the waters of
Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
And all the
spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they
smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to
breathe.
The Israelites took for themselves all the
plunder and
livestock of these cities, but they put all the
people to the sword until they had completely destroyed them, not
sparing anyone who breathed.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the
people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.
Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the
people melt with fear, I remained
loyal to the LORD my God.
And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to
inherit, seeing I am a great
people,
forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto?
Then the sons of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one portion as an inheritance? We have many people, because the LORD has blessed us abundantly.”
And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great
people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for
thyself there in the land of the
Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
Joshua answered them, “If you have so many
people that the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go to the forest and clear for
yourself an area in the land of the
Perizzites and the
Rephaim.”
And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to
Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great
people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only:
So Joshua said to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and
Manasseh—“You have many
people and great strength. You shall not have just one
allotment,
And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
And Joshua said to all the
people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and
Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods.
And the
people answered and said, God
forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
The
people replied, “Far be it from us to
forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the
people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And the LORD
drave out from before us all the
people, even the
Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the
Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our God!”
And Joshua said unto the
people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a
jealous God; he will not
forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
But Joshua said to the
people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God; He is a
jealous God; He will not
forgive your rebellion or your sins.
And the
people said unto Joshua,
Nay; but we will serve the LORD.
“No!” replied the people. “We will serve the LORD!”
And Joshua said unto the
people, Ye are witnesses against
yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
Then Joshua told them, “You are witnesses against
yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “We are witnesses!” they said.
And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
So the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice.”
So Joshua made a covenant with the
people that day, and set them a statute and an
ordinance in
Shechem.
On that day Joshua made a covenant for the
people, and there at
Shechem he established for them a statute and
ordinance.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone. It will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny your God.”
So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the
people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to live among the
people.
