Athaliah ruled the land.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who
remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
“This is what
Sennacherib king of Assyria says: What is the basis of your confidence, that you
remain in Jerusalem under siege?
Also he built altars in the house of the LORD,
whereof the LORD had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.
Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “My Name will
remain in Jerusalem
forever.”
Go,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah concerning the words in the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that has been poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book.”
And
whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the
freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
And let every
survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that region with silver, gold, goods, and
livestock, along with a
freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”
Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
Thus the construction of the house of God in Jerusalem ceased, and it
remained at a
standstill until the second year of the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we
remain this day as a
remnant. Here we are before You in our guilt, though because of it no one can stand before You.”
And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We have done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they
remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities.
Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the remaining nine were to dwell in their own towns.
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there
enlargement and
deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
For if you
remain silent at this time, relief and
deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for
bondmen and
bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not
countervail the king’s damage.
For my people and I have been sold out to destruction, death, and
annihilation. If we had merely been sold as menservants and maidservants, I would have
remained silent, because no such distress would
justify burdening the king.”
Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
If only you would remain silent; for that would be your wisdom!
He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.
And be it indeed that I have
erred, mine error
remaineth with myself.
Even if I have truly gone
astray, my error concerns me alone.
Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.
How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there
remaineth falsehood?
So how can you comfort me with empty words? For your answers
remain full of
falsehood.”
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils,
Those that
remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not
weep.
His survivors will be buried by the plague, and their widows will not
weep for them.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He
remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,
Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
The wild animals enter their lairs; they settle down in their dens.
Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
Though the river rages,
Behemoth is unafraid; he
remains secure, though the Jordan surges to his mouth.
In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
Strength resides in his neck, and dismay leaps before him.
Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
To You, O LORD, I call; be not
deaf to me, O my Rock. For if You
remain silent, I will be like those descending to the Pit.
For my loins are filled with a
loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.
For my loins are full of burning pain, and no soundness remains in my body.
I was
dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was
stirred.
I was speechless and still; I
remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was
stirred.
Lo, then would I
wander far off, and
remain in the wilderness.
Selah.
How far away I would
flee! In the wilderness I would
remain.
Selah They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon
endure, throughout all generations.
May they fear him as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains, through all generations.
Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.
Even the wrath of man shall praise You; with the survivors of wrath You will
clothe Yourself.
They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
In old age they will still bear fruit; healthy and green they will remain,
They shall perish, but thou shalt
endure:
yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a
vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on.
But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.
And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.
The waters covered their foes; not one of them remained.
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that He may cut off their memory from the earth.
Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:
the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He
remains faithful
forever.
For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
For the upright will inhabit the land, and the
blameless will
remain in it;
She is loud and
defiant; her feet do not
remain at home.
He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
Whoever shows contempt for his
neighbor lacks judgment, but a man of understanding
remains silent.
The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
The man who strays from the path of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead.
He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
A man who
remains stiff-necked after much reproof will suddenly be
shattered beyond recovery.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
Generations come and generations go, but the earth
remains forever.
So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
So I became great and surpassed all in Jerusalem who had preceded me; and my wisdom remained with me.
And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in
Zion, and he that
remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:
Whoever remains in
Zion and
whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy— all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living—
But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a
teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
And though a tenth
remains in the land, it will be burned again. As the
terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled, so the holy seed will be a
stump in the land.”
And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
and from the abundance of milk they give, he will eat curds; for all who remain in the land will eat curds and honey.
Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Nothing will
remain but to
crouch among the
captives or fall among the slain.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
The remaining trees of its forests will be so few that a child could count them.
As yet shall he
remain at
Nob that day: he shall
shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of
Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
And there shall be an
highway for the
remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
There will be a
highway for the
remnant of His people who
remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
Yet
gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the
shaking of an olive tree, two or three
berries in the top of the
uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.
Yet gleanings will
remain, like an olive tree that has been beaten— two or three
berries atop the tree, four or five on its fruitful branches,” declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of
Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.
The
remaining archers, the warriors of
Kedar, will be few.” For the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken.
He will surely violently turn and
toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the
chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord’s house.
roll you into a ball, and
sling you into a wide land. There you will die, and there your glorious
chariots will
remain—a disgrace to the house of your master.
Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.
Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter— one that remains faithful.
By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be
purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in
sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.
Therefore Jacob’s guilt will be
atoned for, and the full fruit of the removal of his sin will be this: When he makes all the altar stones like
crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will
remain standing.
Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.
Then justice will inhabit the wilderness, and righteousness will dwell in the fertile field.
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people
remained silent and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.
I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of
Sheol and be deprived of the
remainder of my years.”
“I have kept silent from ages past; I have
remained quiet and restrained. But now I will
groan like a woman in labor; I will at once
gasp and
pant.
The
carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may
remain in the house.
The woodworker extends a measuring line; he marks it out with a
stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He fashions it in the likeness of man, like man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a
shrine.
Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art
wroth; for we have
sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
You
welcome those who
gladly do right, who remember Your ways. Surely You were
angry, for we
sinned. How can we be saved if we
remain in our sins?
Which
remain among the graves, and
lodge in the monuments, which eat
swine’s flesh, and
broth of
abominable things is in their vessels;
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
“For just as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, will
endure before Me,” declares the LORD, “so your descendants and your name will
endure.
And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that
remain of this evil family, which
remain in all the places
whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
And wherever I have banished them, the
remnant of this evil family will choose death over life,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
I have seen thine
adulteries, and thy neighings, the
lewdness of thy
whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields.
Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem!
wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?
Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in
chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall
remain for ever.
then kings and princes will enter through the gates of this city. They will sit on the throne of David, riding in
chariots and on horses with their officials, along with the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited
forever.
And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give
Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that
remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:
But like the bad figs, so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the LORD, ‘so will I deal with
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, and the
remnant of Jerusalem—those
remaining in this land and those living in the land of Egypt.
But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land, saith the LORD; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.
But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave in its own land, to
cultivate it and reside in it, declares the LORD.”
But if they be prophets, and if the word of the LORD be with them, let them now make
intercession to the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, go not to Babylon.
If they are indeed prophets and the word of the LORD is with them, let them now
plead with the LORD of Hosts that the articles
remaining in the house of the LORD, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem, not be taken to Babylon.
For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city,
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says about the pillars, the sea, the bases, and the rest of the articles that remain in this city,
Yea, thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that
remain in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem;
Yes, this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says about the articles that
remain in the house of the LORD, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem:
They shall be carried to Babylon, and there shall they be until the day that I visit them, saith the LORD; then will I bring them up, and restore them to this place.
‘They will be carried to Babylon and will remain there until the day I attend to them again,’ declares the LORD. ‘Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place.’”
Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;
this is what the LORD says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your brothers who did not go with you into exile—
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the city shall be builded upon her own
heap, and the palace shall
remain after the manner thereof.
This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have
compassion on his dwellings. And the city will be rebuilt on her own ruins, and the palace will stand in its rightful place.
When the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against
Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities
remained of the cities of Judah.
as the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the
remaining cities of Judah—against
Lachish and Azekah. For these were the only fortified cities
remaining in Judah.
But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.
So when
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched into the land, we said: ‘Come, let us go into Jerusalem to escape the armies of the Chaldeans and the Arameans.’ So we have
remained in Jerusalem.”
For though ye had
smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there
remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.
Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
When Jeremiah was entered into the
dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had
remained there many days;
So Jeremiah went into a cell in the
dungeon and
remained there a long time.
Then
Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah
remained in the court of the prison.
So King
Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the
courtyard of the guard and given a
loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah
remained in the
courtyard of the guard.
Thus saith the LORD, He that
remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
“This is what the LORD says:
Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever surrenders to the Chaldeans will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of war, and he will live.
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We
beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that
remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the
welfare of this people, but the
hurt.
Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.”
So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the
dungeon: and Jeremiah
remained in the court of the prison.
and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the
cistern. And Jeremiah
remained in the
courtyard of the guard.
And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the
mire, and they are turned away back.
All the women who
remain in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon, and those women will say: ‘They misled you and overcame you— those trusted friends of yours. Your feet
sank into the
mire, and they deserted you.’
So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
And Jeremiah
remained in the
courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away
captive into Babylon the
remnant of the people that
remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that
remained.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away to Babylon the
remnant of the people who had
remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to him.
Even they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: so he dwelt among the people.
had Jeremiah brought from the
courtyard of the guard, and they turned him over to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him home. So Jeremiah
remained among his own people.
Then
Ishmael carried away
captive all the residue of the people that were in
Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people that
remained in
Mizpah, whom Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away
captive, and departed to go over to the
Ammonites.
And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we
beseech thee, our
supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this
remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
Jeremiah the prophet and said, “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire
remnant. For few of us
remain of the many, as you can see with your own eyes.
So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to
sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: and none of them shall
remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.
So all who
resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague. Not one of them will
survive or escape the
disaster I will bring upon them.’
Even men, and women, and children, and the king’s daughters, and every person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and
Baruch the son of Neriah.
the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and
everyone whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had allowed to
remain with Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and
Baruch son of Neriah.
Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and
suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to
remain;
So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great
harm to
yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving
yourselves without a
remnant?
So that none of the
remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to
sojourn there, shall escape or
remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.
so that none of the
remnant of Judah who have gone to reside in Egypt will escape or
survive to return to the land of Judah, where they long to return and live; for none will return except a few fugitives.”
Because of the day that cometh to
spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that
remaineth: for the LORD will
spoil the Philistines, the
remnant of the country of Caphtor.
For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and
Sidon every
remaining ally. Indeed, the LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the
remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his
lees, and hath not been
emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste
remained in him, and his
scent is not changed.
Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine on its
dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his
flavor has
remained the same, and his
aroma is unchanged.
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been set
ablaze, the bars of her gates are broken.
Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall
remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be
desolate for ever.
and say, ‘O LORD, You have promised to cut off this place so that no one will
remain—neither man nor beast. Indeed, it will be
desolate forever.’
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away
captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people that
remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile some of the poorest people and those who
remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the
craftsmen.
Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD’S anger none escaped nor
remained: those that I have
swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.
You summoned my attackers on every side, as for the day of an appointed feast. In the day of the LORD’s anger no one escaped or survived; my enemy has destroyed those I
nurtured and reared.
Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.
You, O LORD, reign
forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation.
But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very
wroth against us.
unless You have utterly rejected us and
remain angry with us beyond measure.
