Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
For the LORD shall judge his people, and
repent himself for his servants, when he
seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.
For the LORD will
vindicate His people and have
compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one
remains, slave or free.
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may
remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be armed for battle to cross over
ahead of your brothers and help them,
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did
melt, neither did there
remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we heard this, our hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.
Now the priests who carried the ark
remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until the people had completed everything the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell them, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people
hurried across,
And they raised over him a great
heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of
Achor, unto this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that
remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of
Achor to this day.
And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them
remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones, that
remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded that they take down the body from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which
remains to this day.
And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of
slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which
remained of them entered into
fenced cities.
So Joshua and the Israelites continued to
inflict a terrible slaughter until they had finished them off, and the
remaining survivors retreated to the fortified cities.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which
remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none
remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none
remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of
Libnah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and his people, until he had left him none
remaining.
At that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
And they took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none
remaining, according to all that he had done to
Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at
Eglon; he devoted to destruction
Hebron and
everyone in it.
And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none
remaining: as he had done to
Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to
Libnah, and to her king.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to
Hebron and as he had done to
Libnah and its king.
So Joshua
smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none
remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who
smote them, and
chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-
maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they
smote them, until they left them none
remaining.
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to Greater
Sidon and Misrephoth-
maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, leaving no survivors.
And they
smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to
breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
The Israelites put
everyone in Hazor to the sword,
devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed
remained, and Joshua burned down Hazor itself.
There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in
Gaza, in
Gath, and in
Ashdod, there
remained.
Now Joshua was old and
stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and
stricken in years, and there
remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.
Now Joshua was old and well along in years, and the LORD said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed.
This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,
This is the land that remains:
All the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, which reigned in
Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who
remained of the
remnant of the giants: for these did Moses
smite, and cast them out.
the whole kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, who had reigned in
Ashtaroth and Edrei and had
remained as a
remnant of the
Rephaim. Moses had struck them down and dispossessed them,
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people
melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.
Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people
melt with fear, I
remained loyal to the LORD my God.
And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance.
there were still seven tribes of Israel who had not yet received their inheritance.
And they shall divide it into seven parts: Judah shall
abide in their coast on the south, and the house of Joseph shall
abide in their coasts on the north.
and divide the land into seven portions. Judah shall remain in their territory in the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory in the north.
And the rest of the children of
Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of
Dan, and out of the half tribe of
Manasseh, ten cities.
The
remaining descendants of
Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim,
Dan, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh.
And the families of the children of
Kohath, the Levites which
remained of the children of
Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.
The
remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were
allotted these cities:
All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of
Kohath that
remained.
In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.
In all, twelve cities were
allotted to the clans of Merari, the
remaining Levite clans.
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these
remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward to the Great Sea.
That ye come not among these nations, these that
remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate with these nations that
remain among you. You must not call on the names of their gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
Else if ye do in any wise go back, and
cleave unto the
remnant of these nations, even these that
remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
For if you turn away and
cling to the rest of these nations that
remain among you, and if you
intermarry and associate with them,
Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.
Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty.
Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did
Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches.
Gilead remained beyond the Jordan.
Dan, why did you
linger by the ships? Asher stayed at the coast and
remained in his harbors.
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there
remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn back and leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back, but ten thousand
remained.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it
remains in Lehi to this day.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength
remained unknown.
And his father in law, the
damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and
lodged there.
His father-in-law, the
girl’s father, persuaded him to stay, so he
remained with him three days, eating, drinking, and
lodging there.
How shall we do for wives for them that
remain, seeing we have
sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
What should we do about wives for the survivors, since we have
sworn by the LORD not to give them our daughters in marriage?”
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
Then the elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?”
And when they arose early on the
morrow morning, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of
Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the
threshold; only the
stump of
Dagon was left to him.
But when they got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his hands broken off and lying on the
threshold. Only the
torso remained.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone
remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark
remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and sought after the LORD.
But the children of
Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they
despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
But some worthless men said, “How can this man save us?” So they
despised him and brought him no gifts; but Saul
remained silent about it.
And it was so on the
morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and
slew the
Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which
remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions, and during the morning watch they invaded the camp of the
Ammonites and slaughtered them, until the hottest part of the day. And the survivors were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of
Gad and
Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in
Gilgal, and all the people followed him
trembling.
Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan into the land of
Gad and
Gilead. Saul, however,
remained at
Gilgal, and all his troops were
quaking in fear.
And Samuel said unto
Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There
remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto
Jesse, Send and
fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come
hither.
And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,”
Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.” “Send for him,” Samuel replied. “For we will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
And Saul sent to
Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
Then Saul sent word to
Jesse, saying, “Let David
remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou
didst hide
thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt
remain by the stone Ezel.
When you have stayed three days,
hurry down to the place you
hid on the day this trouble began, and
remain beside the stone Ezel.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and
Jonathan went to his house.
So the two of them made a covenant before the LORD. And David
remained in Horesh, while
Jonathan went home.
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road, where there was a cave, and he went in to
relieve himself. And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
So David took the
spear and the
cruse of water from Saul’s
bolster; and they
gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither
awaked: for they were all
asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.
So David took the
spear and water
jug by Saul’s head, and they departed. No one saw them or knew about it, nor did
anyone wake up; they all
remained asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.
And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed-
edom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obed-
edom, and all his household.
Thus the ark of the LORD
remained in the house of Obed-
edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and all his household.
That the king said unto
Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of
cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.
he said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of
cedar, while the ark of God
remains in a tent.”
And it came to pass, after the year was
expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of
Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried still at Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out
Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the
Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David
remained in Jerusalem.
And
Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar
remained desolate in her brother
Absalom’s house.
Her brother
Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar lived as a
desolate woman in the house of her brother
Absalom.
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor
remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one
remaining ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And Hushai said unto
Absalom,
Nay; but whom the LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I
abide.
“Not at all,” Hushai answered. “For the one chosen by the LORD, by the people, and by all the men of Israel—his I will be, and with him I will remain.
So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the
dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
Then we will attack David wherever we find him, and we will descend on him like
dew on the ground. And of all the men with him, not even one will
remain.
Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak
comfortably unto thy servants: for I
swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not
tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that
befell thee from thy youth until now.
Now therefore get up! Go out and speak comfort to your servants, for I
swear by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will
remain with you
tonight. This will be worse for you than all the
adversity that has
befallen you from your youth until now!”
And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?
But Barzillai replied, “How many years of my life remain, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?
And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
And they answered the king, “As for the man who consumed us and
plotted against us to
exterminate us from existing within any border of Israel,
And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.
But King Solomon will be blessed and David’s throne will
remain secure before the LORD
forever.”
Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon
levy a tribute of
bondservice unto this day.
their descendants who
remained in the land, those whom the Israelites were unable to
devote to destruction—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.
(For six months did
Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut off every male in
Edom:)
Joab and all Israel had stayed there six months, until he had killed every male in
Edom.
(But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)
But one tribe will remain for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
Solomon sought therefore to kill
Jeroboam. And
Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto
Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
Solomon therefore sought to kill
Jeroboam. But
Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to
Shishak king of Egypt, where he
remained until the death of Solomon.
Then
Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king
Asa sent them to Ben-
hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
So
Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that
remained in the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace. He entrusted it to his servants and sent them with this message to Ben-
hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion king of
Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so
sore, that there was no breath left in him.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
Then said
Elijah unto the people, I, even I only,
remain a prophet of the LORD; but
Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Then
Elijah said to the people, “I am the only
remaining prophet of the LORD, but
Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
And Ben-
hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
Then Ben-
hadad sent another message to
Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if enough dust
remains of Samaria for each of my men to have a handful.”
But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-
hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
The rest of them fled into the city of Aphek, where the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the
remaining men. Ben-
hadad also fled to the city and
hid in an inner room.
And the
remnant of the sodomites, which
remained in the days of his father
Asa, he took out of the land.
He banished from the land the male
shrine prostitutes who
remained from the days of his father
Asa.
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt. Then you and your sons can live on the remainder.”
Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of
Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
He
announced, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of
Elisha son of Shaphat
remains on his shoulders through this day!”
And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.
But one of his servants replied, “Please, have scouts take five of the horses that
remain in the city. Their
plight will be no worse than all the Israelites who are left here. You can see that all the Israelites here are
doomed. So let us send them and find out.”
So
Jehu slew all that
remained of the house of
Ahab in
Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none
remaining.
So
Jehu killed
everyone in
Jezreel who
remained of the house of
Ahab, as well as all his great men and close friends and priests, leaving him without a single
survivor.
And when he came to Samaria, he
slew all that
remained unto
Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the saying of the LORD, which he spake to
Elijah.
When
Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down
everyone belonging to
Ahab who
remained there, until he had destroyed them, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to
Elijah.
And he was with her
hid in the house of the LORD six years. And
Athaliah did reign over the land.
And
Joash remained hidden with his
nurse in the house of the LORD for six years while
Athaliah ruled the land.
Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of
Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked therein: and there
remained the
grove also in Samaria.)
Nevertheless, they did not turn away from the sins that the house of
Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit, but they continued to walk in them. The Asherah pole even
remained standing in Samaria.
And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land.
Menahem exacted this money from each of the wealthy men of Israel—fifty shekels of silver from each man—to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and did not remain in the land.
Therefore the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
So the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah
remained,
For he
clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn from following Him; he kept the commandments that the LORD had given Moses.
But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people
remained silent and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand
captives, and all the
craftsmen and smiths: none
remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land.
He carried into exile all Jerusalem—all the commanders and mighty men of
valor, all the
craftsmen and metalsmiths—ten thousand
captives in all. Only the poorest people of the land
remained.
Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon, with the
remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the population.
And as for the people that
remained in the land of Judah, whom
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler.
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over the people he had left behind in the land of Judah.
And the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
So the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria) to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh into exile. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they
remain to this day.
And out of the half tribe of
Manasseh; Aner with her suburbs, and Bileam with her suburbs, for the family of the
remnant of the sons of
Kohath.
And from the half-tribe of
Manasseh the
remaining clans of the Kohathites were given Aner and Bileam, together with their pasturelands.
And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.
Those who were musicians, the heads of
Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers and were
exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and night.
And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
From Benjamin, the
kinsmen of Saul: 3,000, most of whom had
remained loyal to the house of Saul up to that time.
And the ark of God
remained with the family of Obed-
edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-
edom, and all that he had.
Thus the ark of God
remained with the family of Obed-
edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he owned.
Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to
Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD
remaineth under curtains.
After David had settled into his palace, he said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of
cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”
And it came to pass, that after the year was
expired, at the time that kings go out to battle,
Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of
Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried at Jerusalem. And
Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,
Joab led out the army and
ravaged the land of the
Ammonites. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David
remained in Jerusalem. And
Joab attacked Rabbah and
demolished it.
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague
remain upon Your people.”
And the rest of the sons of Levi were these: Of the sons of Amram; Shubael: of the sons of Shubael; Jehdeiah.
Now these were the remaining descendants of Levi: From the sons of Amram: Shubael; from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.
But of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day.
their descendants who remained in the land, those whom the Israelites were unable to destroy—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.
