Which
say, Stand by
thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.
They
say, ‘Keep to
yourself; do not come near me, for I am holier than you!’ Such people are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all day long.
Your
iniquities, and the
iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and
blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their
bosom.
both for your
iniquities and for those of your fathers,”
says the LORD. “Because they burned incense on the mountains and
scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former deeds.”
Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the
cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.
This is what the LORD
says: “As the new wine is found in a
cluster of grapes, and men
say, ‘Do not destroy it, for it contains a blessing,’ so I will act on behalf of My servants; I will not destroy them all.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be
hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be
thirsty: behold, my servants shall
rejoice, but ye shall be
ashamed:
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD
says: “My servants will eat, but you will go
hungry; My servants will drink, but you will go
thirsty; My servants will
rejoice, but you will be put to shame.
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the
bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not
hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.
The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but the food of the serpent will be dust. They will neither
harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain,”
says the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my
footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
This is what the LORD
says: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My
footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me? Or where will My place of
repose be?
Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the
womb? saith thy God.
Shall I bring a
baby to the point of birth and not deliver it?”
says the LORD. “Or will I who deliver close the
womb?”
says your God.
For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye
suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be
dandled upon her knees.
For this is what the LORD
says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flowing stream; you will
nurse and be carried on her arm, and
bounced upon her knees.
And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in
chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.
And they will bring all your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the LORD on horses and
chariots and wagons, on mules and camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem,”
says the LORD, “just as the Israelites bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD.”
And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the LORD.
“And I will select some of them as priests and Levites,” says the LORD.
And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.
Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
But the LORD said unto me,
Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and
whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
But the LORD told me: “Do not
say, ‘I am only a child.’ For to
everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak.
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me,
saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an
almond tree.
And the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” “I see a branch of an
almond tree,” I replied.
And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time,
saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a
seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.
Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see?” “I see a boiling pot,” I replied, “and it is
tilting toward us from the north.”
Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem,
saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine
espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
“Go and
proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem that this is what the LORD
says: ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a
bride, how you followed Me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.
Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
This is what the LORD
says: “What fault did your fathers find in Me that they
strayed so far from Me, and followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?
For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and
burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not
transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the
harlot.
“For long ago you broke your yoke and
tore off your chains,
saying, ‘I will not serve!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down as a
prostitute.
How canst thou
say, I am not
polluted, I have not gone after
Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift
dromedary traversing her ways;
“How can you
say, ‘I am not
defiled; I have not run after the Baals’? Look at your
behavior in the valley; acknowledge what you have done. You are a swift young she-
camel galloping here and there,
Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me and not their faces, yet in the time of trouble they
beg, ‘Rise up and save us!’
O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?
You people of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: “Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of dense darkness? Why do My people
say, ‘We are free to
roam; we will come to You no more’?
Yet thou
sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will
plead with thee, because thou
sayest, I have not
sinned.
you
say, ‘I am innocent. Surely His anger will turn from me.’ Behold, I will judge you, because you
say, ‘I have not
sinned.’
They
say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly
polluted? but thou hast played the
harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
Go and
proclaim these words toward the north, and
say, Return, thou
backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am
merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.
Go,
proclaim this message toward the north: ‘Return, O faithless Israel,’ declares the LORD. ‘I will no longer look on you with anger, for I am
merciful,’ declares the LORD. ‘I will not be
angry forever.
And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
“In those days, when you multiply and increase in the land,” declares the LORD, “they will no longer
discuss the ark of the covenant of the LORD. It will never come to mind, and no one will remember it or miss it, nor will another one be made.
For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your
fallow ground, and
sow not among thorns.
For this is what the LORD
says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your
unplowed ground, and do not
sow among the thorns.
Declare ye in Judah, and
publish in Jerusalem; and
say, Blow ye the
trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and
say,
Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly
deceived this people and Jerusalem,
saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
Then I said, “
Ah, Lord GOD, how completely You have
deceived this people and Jerusalem by
saying, ‘You will have peace,’ while a sword is at our throats.”
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be
desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
For this is what the LORD
says: “The whole land will be
desolate, but I will not finish its destruction.
For I have heard a voice as of a woman in
travail, and the
anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of
Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands,
saying,
Woe is me now! for my soul is
wearied because of murderers.
For I hear a cry like a woman in labor, a cry of
anguish like one bearing her first child— the cry of the Daughter of
Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands to
say, “
Woe is me, for my soul
faints before the murderers!”
And though they
say, The LORD liveth; surely they
swear falsely.
Although they
say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ they are
swearing falsely.”
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall
devour them.
Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says: “Because you have spoken this word, I will make My words a fire in your mouth and this people the wood it consumes.
Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
Behold, I am bringing a distant nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD. “It is an established nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know and whose speech you do not understand.
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall
say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have
forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
And when the people ask, ‘For what
offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ You are to tell them, ‘Just as you have
forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve foreigners in a land that is not your own.’”
Declare this in the house of Jacob, and
publish it in Judah,
saying,
Declare this in the house of Jacob and
proclaim it in Judah:
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rains, both autumn and spring, in season, who keeps for us the appointed weeks of harvest.’
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts
says: “Cut down the trees and raise a siege
ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; there is nothing but oppression in her midst.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall throughly
glean the
remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets.
This is what the LORD of Hosts
says: “
Glean the
remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine. Pass your hand once more like a
grape gatherer over the branches.”
They have
healed also the
hurt of the daughter of my people slightly,
saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
They dress the wound of My people with very little care, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace at all.
Were they
ashamed when they had committed
abomination?
nay, they were not at all
ashamed, neither could they
blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
Are they
ashamed of the
abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to
blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I
punish them, they will
collapse,”
says the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’ Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’
I appointed
watchmen over you and said, ‘
Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.’ But they answered, ‘We will not
listen!’
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.
Therefore this is what the LORD
says: “I will lay
stumbling blocks before this people; fathers and sons alike will be
staggered; friends and neighbors will perish.”
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth.
This is what the LORD
says: “Behold, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is
stirred up from the ends of the earth.
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
Stand in the gate of the LORD’S house, and
proclaim there this word, and
say, Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the LORD.
“Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and
proclaim this message: Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah who enter through these gates to worship the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel,
Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Correct your ways and deeds, and I will let you live in this place.
Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.
Do not trust in
deceptive words,
chanting: ‘This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’
And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears My Name, and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue with all these abominations’?
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my
fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be
quenched.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD
says: Behold, My anger and My
fury will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field and the produce of the land, and it will burn and not be
extinguished.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,
says: Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat
yourselves!
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
but this is what I commanded them: Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you.
But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
Therefore you must
say to them, ‘This is the nation that would not
listen to the voice of the LORD their God and would not receive correction. Truth has perished; it has disappeared from their lips.
Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
So you are to tell them this is what the LORD says: “Do men fall and not get up again? Does one turn away and not return?
I
hearkened and heard, but they spake not
aright: no man
repented him of his wickedness,
saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
I have
listened and heard; they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone has pursued his own course like a horse charging into battle.
How do ye
say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the
scribes is in vain.
How can you
say, ‘We are wise, and the Law of the LORD is with us,’ when in fact the lying pen of the
scribes has produced a
deception?
For they have
healed the
hurt of the daughter of my people slightly,
saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
They dress the wound of the daughter of My people with very little care, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace at all.
Were they
ashamed when they had committed
abomination?
nay, they were not at all
ashamed, neither could they
blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their
visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
Are they
ashamed of the
abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to
blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I
punish them, they will
collapse,
says the LORD.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will
melt them, and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold, I will refine them and test them, for what else can I do because of the daughter of My people?
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with
wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,
says: “Behold, I will feed this people
wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the
mourning women, that they may come; and send for
cunning women, that they may come:
This is what the LORD of Hosts
says: “Take note, and
summon the
wailing women; send for the most skillful among them.
Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the
harvestman, and none shall gather them.
Declare that this is what the LORD
says: “The corpses of men will fall like dung upon the open field, like newly cut grain behind the
reaper, with no one to gather it.”
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
This is what the LORD
says: “Let not the wise man
boast in his wisdom, nor the strong man in his strength, nor the wealthy man in his riches.
Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
This is what the LORD
says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be
terrified by the signs in the heavens, though the nations themselves are
terrified by them.
Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
Thus you are to tell them: “These gods, who have made neither the heavens nor the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.”
For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will
sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
For this is what the LORD
says: “Behold, at this time I will
sling out the inhabitants of the land and bring distress upon them so that they may be captured.”
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
And
say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel;
Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant,
You must tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel,
says:
Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,
Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:
which I commanded your forefathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, saying, ‘Obey Me, and do everything I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God.’
Then the LORD said unto me,
Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem,
saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them.
Then the LORD said to me, “
Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem,
saying: Hear the words of this covenant and carry them out.
For I earnestly
protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and
protesting,
saying, Obey my voice.
For from the time I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt until
today, I strongly
warned them again and again,
saying, ‘Obey My voice.’
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not
hearken unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD
says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a
disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to Me, but I will not
listen to them.
But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had
plotted against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life,
saying,
Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:
Therefore this is what the LORD
says concerning the people of Anathoth who are seeking your life and
saying, “You must not
prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will die by our hand.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will
punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine:
So this is what the LORD of Hosts
says: “I will
punish them. Their young men will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine.
Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to
inherit; Behold, I will
pluck them out of their land, and
pluck out the house of Judah from among them.
This is what the LORD
says: “As for all My evil neighbors who attack the inheritance that I
bequeathed to My people Israel, I am about to
uproot them from their land, and I will
uproot the house of Judah from among them.
And it shall come to pass, if they will
diligently learn the ways of my people, to
swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to
swear by
Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.
And if they will
diligently learn the ways of My people and
swear by My name,
saying, ‘As surely as the LORD lives’—just as they once taught My people to
swear by
Baal—then they will be established among My people.
And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time:
Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me:
Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I
mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.
“This is what the LORD says: In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.
Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Every
bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall
say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every
bottle shall be filled with wine?
Therefore you are to tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Every wineskin shall be filled with wine.’ And when they reply, ‘Don’t we surely know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’
Then shalt thou
say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David’s throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with
drunkenness.
then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD
says: ‘I am going to fill with
drunkenness all who live in this land—the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the people of Jerusalem.
Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble
yourselves, sit down: for your
principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.
Say to the king and to the queen mother: “Take a lowly seat, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.”
What
wilt thou
say when he shall
punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in
travail?
What will you
say when He sets over you close allies whom you
yourself trained? Will not pangs of
anguish grip you, as they do a woman in labor?
And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.
And if you ask
yourself, “Why has this happened to me?” It is because of the magnitude of your iniquity that your skirts have been
stripped off and your body has been exposed.
Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to
wander, they have not
refrained their feet, therefore the LORD
doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.
This is what the LORD
says about this people: “Truly they love to
wander; they have not restrained their feet. So the LORD does not accept them; He will now remember their guilt and call their sins to account.”
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets
say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you
assured peace in this place.
“
Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that
prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they
say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
Therefore this is what the LORD
says about the prophets who
prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they
say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end!
Therefore thou shalt
say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very
grievous blow.
You are to speak this word to them: ‘My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people has been
shattered by a
crushing blow, a severely
grievous wound.
And it shall come to pass, if they
say unto thee,
Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.
If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘Those destined for death, to death; those destined for the sword, to the sword; those destined for famine, to famine; and those destined for captivity, to captivity.’
Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the
vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD
says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My
spokesman. It is they who must turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
The word of the LORD came also unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that
begat them in this land;
For this is what the LORD says concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and the mothers who bore them, and the fathers who fathered them in this land:
For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of
mourning, neither go to
lament nor
bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and
mercies.
Indeed, this is what the LORD
says: “Do not enter a house where there is a funeral meal. Do not go to
mourn or show sympathy, for I have removed from this people My peace, My loving devotion, and My
compassion,” declares the LORD.
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of
mirth, and the voice of
gladness, the voice of the
bridegroom, and the voice of the
bride.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,
says: I am going to remove from this place, before your very eyes and in your days, the sounds of joy and
gladness, the voices of the
bride and
bridegroom.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt
shew this people all these words, and they shall
say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?
When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great
disaster against us? What is our guilt? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’
Then shalt thou
say unto them, Because your fathers have
forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have
forsaken me, and have not kept my law;
Then you are to answer them: ‘It is because your fathers have
forsaken Me, declares the LORD, and followed other gods, and served and worshiped them. They abandoned Me and did not keep My instruction.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’
But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands
whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.
Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ For I will return them to their land that I gave to their forefathers.
