Thus dealt he
zealously for the law of God like as Phinees did unto Zambri the

Now when the time drew near that Mattathias should die, he said unto his
sons, Now hath pride and
rebuke gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of
indignation:
Now therefore, my
sons, be ye
zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers.
Wherefore, ye my
sons, be
valiant and
shew yourselves men in the behalf of the law; for by it shall ye obtain glory.
And he died in the hundred forty and sixth year, and his
sons buried him in the

stead.

son Antiochus, until he came again.
Then
Lysias chose Ptolemee the
son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and
Gorgias, mighty men of the king’s friends:

forever.
And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who
didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of

Judas chose Eupolemus the
son of John, the
son of Accos, and
Jason the
son of
Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of
amity and
confederacy with them,
Besides, he took the chief men’s sons in the country for hostages, and put them into the tower at Jerusalem to be kept.
Now therefore let us make a league of
amity together, and give me now thy daughter to wife: and I will be thy
son in law, and will give both thee and her as according to thy dignity.
Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander’s part
afore, who, seeing that all the host

Gaza made
supplication unto
Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the
sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.
Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the
son of
Absalom, and
Judas the
son of Calphi, the captains of the host.

son of
Antiochus, and

Jonathan the

songs and
thanksgiving.

Antiochus, and
Antipater son of
Jason, the Jews’ ambassadors, came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us.
Whereof when the people heard, they said, What
thanks shall we give to Simon and his
sons?
Forasmuch as
oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the
son of Mattathias, of the
posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in
jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour:

Antiochus son of
Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people;

prospered so well in our hands, that we have delivered Israel
oftentimes.
Moreover in the plain of
Jericho was Ptolemeus the
son of Abubus made captain, and he had abundance of silver and gold:
For he was the high priest’s son in law.
Wherefore his heart being lifted up, he thought to get the country to himself, and
thereupon consulted
deceitfully against Simon and his
sons to destroy them.
Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the country, and taking care for the good ordering of them; at which time he came down himself to
Jericho with his
sons, Mattathias and
Judas, in the hundred
threescore and
seventeenth year, in the
eleventh month, called Sabat:
Where the
son of Abubus receiving them
deceitfully into a little hold, called Docus, which he had built, made them a great
banquet:
howbeit he had
hid men there.
So when Simon and his
sons had
drunk largely, Ptolemee and his men rose up, and took their weapons, and came upon Simon into the

son of Tobias, a man of great dignity, and not as that wicked Simon had misinformed: the sum
whereof in all was four hundred talents of silver, and two hundred of gold:

Apollonius the
son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the
coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor,

And when he had
exhorted her with many words, she promised him that she would counsel her
son.
But she bowing herself toward him,
laughing the cruel
tyrant to
scorn, spake in her country language on this manner; O my
son, have
pity upon me that bare thee nine months in my
womb, and gave thee such three years, and
nourished thee, and brought thee up unto this age, and
endured the troubles of education.
I
beseech thee, my
son, look upon the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, and consider that God made them of things that were not; and so was mankind made likewise.
Last of all after the sons the mother died.
Then
forthwith choosing Nicanor the

opportunities, and expect what shall be the event. I have appointed my
son Antiochus king, whom I often committed and

Therefore I pray and request you to remember the benefits that I have done unto you generally, and in special, and that every man will be still faithful to me and my son.

Judas informed, that
Demetrius the
son of Seleucus, having entered by the
