Because Isaac had a
taste for wild game, he loved
Esau; but
Rebekah loved Jacob.
And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may
bless thee before I die.
Then prepare a
tasty dish that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I may
bless you before I die.”
Bring me
venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and
bless thee before the LORD before my death.
‘Bring me some game and prepare me a
tasty dish to eat, so that I may
bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.’
Go now to the flock, and
fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:
Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so that I can make them into a
tasty dish for your father—the kind he loves.
And he went, and
fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.
So Jacob went and got two goats and brought them to his mother, who made the
tasty food his father loved.
And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
Then she handed her son Jacob the
tasty food and bread she had made.
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s
venison, that thy soul may
bless me.
He too made some
tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may
bless me.”
Therefore they did set over them
taskmasters to
afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh
treasure cities,
Pithom and Raamses.
So the Egyptians appointed
taskmasters over the Israelites to
oppress them with forced labor. As a result, they built
Pithom and
Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the
affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their
taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the
affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings.
And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,
That same day Pharaoh commanded the
taskmasters of the people and their
foremen:
And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.
So the
taskmasters and
foremen of the people went out and said to them, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I am no longer giving you straw.
And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.
The
taskmasters kept pressing them, saying, “
Fulfill your
quota each day, just as you did when straw was provided.”
And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s
taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your
task in making brick both
yesterday and to day, as
heretofore?
Then the
Israelite foremen, whom Pharaoh’s
taskmasters had set over the people, were beaten and asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your
quota of bricks
yesterday or
today, as you did before?”
And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not
minish ought from your bricks of your daily
task.
The
Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You must not reduce your daily
quota of bricks.”
And the house of Israel called the name thereof
Manna: and it was like
coriander seed, white; and the
taste of it was like
wafers made with honey.
Now the house of Israel called the bread
manna. It was white like
coriander seed and
tasted like
wafers made with honey.
Thou
wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it
thyself alone.
Surely you and these people with you will wear
yourselves out, because the
task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone.
And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and
confess over him all the
iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:
Then he is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and
confess over it all the
iniquities and
rebellious acts of the Israelites in regard to all their sins. He is to put them on the goat’s head and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man appointed for the
task.
But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and
appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:
In order that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go in and
assign each man his
task and what he is to carry.
And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and
baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the
taste of it was as the
taste of fresh oil.
The people walked around and gathered it, ground it on a
handmill or
crushed it in a mortar, then boiled it in a
cooking pot or shaped it into cakes. It
tasted like
pastry baked with fine oil.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and
bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the
fringe of the borders a
ribband of blue:
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them that throughout the generations to come they are to make for themselves
tassels for the corners of their garments, with a blue cord on each
tassel.
And it shall be unto you for a
fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a
whoring:
These will serve as
tassels for you to look at, so that you may remember all the commandments of the LORD, that you may obey them and not
prostitute yourselves by following your own heart and your own eyes.
You are to make
tassels on the four corners of the
cloak you wear.
And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had
adjured the people, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be
avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people
tasted any food.
Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an oath, saying, “
Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, before I have taken
vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the troops
tasted any food.
Then said
Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been
enlightened, because I
tasted a little of this honey.
“My father has brought trouble to the land,”
Jonathan replied. “Just look at how my eyes have
brightened because I
tasted a little of this honey.
Then Saul said to
Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And
Jonathan told him, and said, I did but
taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So
Jonathan told him, “I only
tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I must die?”
And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David
sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I
taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an oath, saying, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if I
taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”
I am this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant
taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant
taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the
pottage, that they
cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.
And they poured it out for the men to eat, but when they
tasted the
stew they
cried out, “There is death in the pot, O man of God!” And they could not eat it.
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Then King David said to the whole assembly, “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great because this palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were
scribes, and officers, and
porters.
were over the laborers and
supervised all who did the work,
task by
task. Some of the Levites were
secretaries, officers, and gatekeepers.
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and
disheartened, for they realized that this
task had been accomplished by our God.
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Is
tasteless food eaten without salt, or is there
flavor in the white of an egg?
Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth
taste his meat?
Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes its food?
And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
Yet another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, having never tasted prosperity.
For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
For the ear tests words as the mouth tastes food.
O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
How sweet are thy words unto my
taste!
yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
How sweet are Your words to my taste— sweeter than honey in my mouth!
Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
“
Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is
tasty!”
They that
tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Those who
linger over wine, who go to
taste mixed drinks.
My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the
honeycomb, which is sweet to thy
taste:
Eat honey, my son, for it is good, and the
honeycomb is sweet to your
taste.
For all his days are sorrows, and his
travail grief;
yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
Indeed, all his days are filled with grief, and his
task is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is
futile.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the
sinner He assigns the
task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
There is one alone, and there is not a second;
yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and
bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity,
yea, it is a
sore travail.
There is a man all alone, without even a son or brother. And though there is no end to his labor, his eyes are still not content with his wealth: “For whom do I
toil and
bereave my soul of enjoyment?” This too is
futile—a
miserable task.
When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night
seeth sleep with his eyes:)
When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the task that one performs on the earth—though his eyes do not see sleep in the day or even in the night—
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.
Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind.
Breathe on my garden and spread the
fragrance of its spices. Let my beloved come into his garden and
taste its choicest fruits.
For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be
wroth as in the valley of
Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim. He will
rouse Himself as in the Valley of
Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His
task, His
disturbing task.
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
Behold, I have created the
craftsman who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its
task; and I have created the destroyer to
wreak havoc.
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his
lees, and hath not been
emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his
taste remained in him, and his
scent is not changed.
Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine on its
dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his
flavor has remained the same, and his
aroma is unchanged.
Belshazzar, whiles he
tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father
Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
Under the influence of the wine,
Belshazzar gave orders to bring in the gold and silver vessels that
Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king could drink from them, along with his nobles, his wives, and his concubines.
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through
Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast,
herd nor flock,
taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
Then he issued a
proclamation in
Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let no man or beast,
herd or flock,
taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink.
Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not
taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their
phylacteries, and
enlarge the borders of their garments,
They gave him
vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had
tasted thereof, he would not drink.
they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.
And he said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not
taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
Then Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.”
For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant in charge of his own
task, and
instructed the
doorkeeper to keep watch.
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
But I tell you truthfully, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
For I say unto you, That none of those men which were
bidden shall
taste of my
supper.
For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will
taste my
banquet.’”
When the ruler of the feast had
tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the
bridegroom,
and the master of the
banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the
bridegroom aside
Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
“Now we know that You have a
demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that
anyone who keeps Your word will never
taste death.
To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
To the one, we are an
odor of death and
demise; to the other, a
fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a
task?
(Touch not; taste not; handle not;
“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”?
This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might
taste death for
everyone.
For it is impossible for those who were once
enlightened, and have
tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
It is impossible for those who have once been
enlightened, who have
tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age—
If so be ye have
tasted that the Lord is
gracious.
now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
And the men that are received shall see it, who have not tasted death from their birth: and the heart of the inhabitants shall be changed, and turned into another meaning.
For immediately there was great and innumerable fruit, and many and
divers pleasures for the
taste, and flowers of unchangeable colour, and odours of wonderful smell: and this was done the third day.
But go into a field of flowers, where no house is builded, and eat only the flowers of the field; taste no flesh, drink no wine, but eat flowers only;)
Then before I had tasted of any meat, I started up, and took him up into a room until the going down of the sun.
Instead of which punishment, dealing
graciously with thine own people, thou preparedst for them meat of a strange
taste, even quails to
stir up their
appetite:
To the end that they, desiring food, might for the
ugly sight of the beasts sent among them
lothe even that, which they must needs desire; but these, suffering
penury for a short space, might be made partakers of a strange
taste.
Instead
whereof thou feddest thine own people with angels’ food, and
didst send them from heaven bread prepared without their labour, able to content every man’s delight, and agreeing to every
taste.
Yea, the
tasting of death touched the righteous also, and there was a destruction of the multitude in the wilderness: but the wrath
endured not long.
Unto these the destroyer gave place, and was afraid of them: for it was enough that they only tasted of the wrath.
As it behoved them to come, that are
resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be
tasted.
It came to pass also, that seven brethren with their mother were taken, and compelled by the king against the law to
taste swine’s flesh, and were
tormented with scourges and whips.
Now when the king had taken a
taste of the
manliness of the Jews, he went about to take the holds by policy,
For as it is
hurtful to drink wine or water alone; and as wine mingled with water is pleasant, and delighteth the
taste: even so speech finely framed delighteth the ears of them that read the story. And here shall be an end.
