And when Joshua and all Israel saw
that the
ambush had taken the city, and
that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and
slew the men of
Ai.
When Joshua and all Israel saw
that the men in
ambush had captured the city and
that smoke was rising from it, they turned around and struck down the men of
Ai.
And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on
that side: and they
smote them, so
that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of
slaying all the inhabitants of
Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they
chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed,
that all the Israelites returned unto
Ai, and
smote it with the edge of the sword.
When Israel had finished killing all the men of
Ai who had pursued them into the field and wilderness, and when every last one of them had fallen by the sword, all the Israelites returned to
Ai and put it to the sword as well.
And so it was,
that all
that fell
that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of
Ai.
A total of twelve thousand men and women fell
that day—all the people of
Ai.
For Joshua drew not his hand back,
wherewith he stretched out the
spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw back the hand
that held his battle
lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in
Ai.
Only the cattle and the
spoil of
that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.
Israel took for themselves only the cattle and
plunder of
that city, as the LORD had commanded Joshua.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded
that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones,
that remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded
that they take down the body from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.
Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount
Ebal,
At
that time Joshua built an altar on Mount
Ebal to the LORD, the God of Israel,
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on
that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he
that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before,
that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
Afterward, Joshua read
aloud all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—according to all
that is written in the Book of the Law.
There was not a word of all
that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers
that were
conversant among them.
There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who lived among them.
That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one
accord.
they came together to
wage war against Joshua and Israel.
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.
This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we
sware unto them.
This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so
that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we
swore to them.”
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how
that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly
that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and
that is why we have done this.
And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel,
that they
slew them not.
So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken
Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to
Jericho and her king, so he had done to
Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard
that Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to
Ai and its king as he had done to
Jericho and its king—and
that the people of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
That they feared greatly, because
Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than
Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly
alarmed, because
Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than
Ai, and all its men were mighty.
Come up unto me, and help me,
that we may
smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
“Come up and help me. We will attack
Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”
And the men of
Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to
Gilgal, saying,
Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the
Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
Then the men of
Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at
Gilgal: “Do not
abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the
Amorites from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
And the LORD
discomfited them before Israel, and
slew them with a great slaughter at
Gibeon, and
chased them along the way
that goeth up to Beth-horon, and
smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at
Gibeon, pursued them along the
ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon,
that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the
Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon
Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
On the day
that the LORD gave the
Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “O sun, stand still over
Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of
Aijalon.”
And there was no day like
that before it or after it,
that the LORD
hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD
listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.
And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of
slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed,
that the rest which remained of them entered into
fenced cities.
So Joshua and the Israelites continued to
inflict a terrible slaughter until they had finished them off, and the remaining survivors retreated to the fortified cities.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun,
that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered
that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
And
that day Joshua took Makkedah, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls
that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
On
that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls
that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD also delivered
that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of
Libnah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls
that were therein, according to all
that he had done to
Libnah.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the people to the sword, just as he had done to
Libnah.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
At
that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
And they took it on
that day, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls
that were therein he utterly destroyed
that day, according to all
that he had done to
Lachish.
That day they captured
Eglon and put it to the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, just as he had done to
Lachish.
And they took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls
that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all
that he had done to
Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls
that were therein.
They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at
Eglon; he devoted to destruction
Hebron and
everyone in it.
And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls
that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to
Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to
Libnah, and to her king.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to
Hebron and as he had done to
Libnah and its king.
So Joshua
smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all
that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
Now when Jabin king of Hazor heard about these things, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon; to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph;
And to the kings
that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of
Dor on the west,
to the kings of the north in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Chinnereth, in the foothills, and in Naphoth-
dor to the west;
And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand
that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and
chariots very many.
So these kings came out with all their armies, a multitude as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, along with a great number of horses and
chariots.
And Joshua at
that time turned back, and took Hazor, and
smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor
beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
And they
smote all the souls
that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to
breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
The Israelites put
everyone in Hazor to the sword,
devoting them to destruction. Nothing
that breathed remained, and Joshua burned down Hazor itself.
But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.
Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
So Joshua took all
that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of
Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
So Joshua took this entire region: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of
Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the mountains of Israel and their foothills,
Even from the mount Halak,
that goeth up to
Seir, even unto
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon under mount
Hermon: and all their kings he took, and
smote them, and
slew them.
from Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir, as far as
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon at the foot of Mount
Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.
There was not a city
that made peace with the children of Israel, save the
Hivites the inhabitants of
Gibeon: all other they took in battle.
No city made peace with the Israelites except the
Hivites living in
Gibeon; all others were taken in battle.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts,
that they should come against Israel in battle,
that he might destroy them utterly, and
that they might have no favour, but
that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts to
engage Israel in battle, so
that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being
annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And at
that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from
Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
At
that time Joshua proceeded to
eliminate the
Anakim from the hill country of
Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction, along with their cities.
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt in
Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river
Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half
Gilead, even unto the river
Jabbok, which is the border of the children of
Ammon;
And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel
smote on this side Jordan on the west, from
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon even unto the mount Halak,
that goeth up to
Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
And these are the kings of the land
that Joshua and the Israelites conquered beyond the Jordan to the west, from
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon to Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir (according to the allotments to the tribes of Israel, Joshua gave them as an inheritance
This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,
This is the land that remains:
From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of
Ekron northward, which is counted to the
Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:
All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites, from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of
Ekron on the north (considered to be
Canaanite territory)—
that of the five
Philistine rulers of
Gaza,
Ashdod, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron, as well as
that of the Avvites;
From the south, all the land of the
Canaanites, and Mearah
that is beside the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the borders of the
Amorites:
to the south, all the land of the
Canaanites, from Mearah of the Sidonians to Aphek, as far as the border of the
Amorites;
From Aroer,
that is upon the bank of the river
Arnon, and the city
that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;
The area from Aroer on the
rim of the
Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
And their coast was from Aroer,
that is on the bank of the river
Arnon, and the city
that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba;
The territory from Aroer on the
rim of the
Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau beyond Medeba,
Heshbon, and all her cities
that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-
baal, and Beth-
baal-meon,
to
Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth-
baal, Beth-
baal-meon,
Balaam also the son of Beor, the
soothsayer, did the children of Israel
slay with the sword among them
that were slain by them.
The Israelites also killed the diviner
Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the sword.
And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of
Gilead, and half the land of the children of
Ammon, unto Aroer
that is before Rabbah;
The territory of Jazer, all the cities of
Gilead, and half the land of the
Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;
And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of
Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of
Manasseh by their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the half-tribe of
Manasseh,
that is, to half the tribe of the descendants of
Manasseh:
And half
Gilead, and
Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of
Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.
half of
Gilead; and
Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of
Og in
Bashan. All this was for the clans of the descendants of Machir son of
Manasseh,
that is, half of the descendants of Machir.
And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of
Canaan, which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.
Now these are the portions
that the Israelites inherited in the land of
Canaan, as distributed by
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families of the tribes of Israel.
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing
that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
Nevertheless my brethren
that went up with me made the heart of the people
melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.
Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people
melt with fear, I remained
loyal to the LORD my God.
And Moses
sware on
that day, saying, Surely the land
whereon thy feet have
trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.
On
that day Moses
swore to me, saying, ‘Surely the land on which you have set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children
forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’
As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
still as strong
today as I was the day Moses sent me out. As my strength was then, so it is now for war, for going out, and for coming in.
Now therefore give me this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in
that day; for thou heardest in
that day how the Anakims were there, and
that the cities were great and
fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me this hill country
that the LORD promised me on
that day, for you
yourself heard then
that the
Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.”
Hebron therefore became the inheritance of
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because
that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.
Therefore
Hebron belongs to
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.
And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looketh southward:
Their southern border started at the bay on the southern
tip of the Salt Sea,
From thence it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast.
It proceeded to Azmon, joined the
Brook of Egypt, and ended at the Sea. This was their southern border.
And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of
Achor, and so northward, looking toward
Gilgal,
that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel:
Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of
Achor, turning north to
Gilgal, which faces the
Ascent of Adummim south of the
ravine. It continued along the waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.
And the border went up by the valley of the son of
Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain
that lieth before the valley of
Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:
From there the border went up the Valley of
Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusites (
that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill
that faces the Valley of
Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim.
And the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border was drawn to Baalah, which is Kirjath-jearim:
From the
hilltop the border curved to the spring of the Waters of Nephtoah, proceeded to the cities of Mount Ephron, and then bent around toward Baalah (
that is, Kiriath-jearim).
And the border compassed from Baalah westward unto mount
Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north side, and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed on to Timnah:
The border
curled westward from Baalah to Mount
Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (
that is, Chesalon), went down to Beth-shemesh, and crossed to Timnah.
And unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron.
According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave
Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba,
that is,
Hebron. (Arba was the
forefather of
Anak.)
And
Caleb said, He
that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And it came to pass, as she came unto him,
that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
And Hazor, Hadattah, and Kerioth, and Hezron, which is Hazor,
Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron (that is, Hazor),
From
Ekron even unto the sea, all
that lay near
Ashdod, with their villages:
from
Ekron to the sea, all the cities near
Ashdod, along with their villages;
And Dannah, and Kirjath-
sannah, which is Debir,
Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, Dannah, Kiriath-
sannah (
that is, Debir),
And Humtah, and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, and Zior; nine cities with their villages:
Humtah, Kiriath-arba (
that is,
Hebron), and Zior—nine cities, along with their villages.
Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, and Rabbah; two cities with their villages:
Kiriath-
baal (
that is, Kiriath-jearim), and Rabbah—two cities, along with their villages.
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto the water of
Jericho on the east, to the wilderness
that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The
allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at
Jericho to the waters of
Jericho on the east, through the wilderness
that goes up from
Jericho into the hill country of
Bethel.
And goeth out from
Bethel to
Luz, and passeth along unto the borders of Archi to Ataroth,
It went on from
Bethel (
that is,
Luz) and proceeded to the border of the Archites in Ataroth.
But they did not drive out the
Canaanites who lived in
Gezer. So the
Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day, but they are forced laborers.
And the coast of
Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah,
that lieth before
Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
Now the border of
Manasseh went from Asher to Michmethath near
Shechem, then southward to include the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
And
Manasseh had in
Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns, even three countries.
Within
Issachar and Asher,
Manasseh was assigned Beth-shean, Ibleam,
Dor (
that is, Naphath),
Endor, Taanach, and
Megiddo, each with their surrounding settlements.
Yet the children of
Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the
Canaanites would dwell in
that land.
But the descendants of
Manasseh were unable to occupy these cities, because the
Canaanites were determined to stay in this land.
Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were
waxen strong,
that they put the
Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.
However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they put the
Canaanites to forced labor; but they failed to drive them out completely.
And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for
thyself there in the land of the
Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people
that the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go to the forest and clear for
yourself an area in the land of the
Perizzites and the
Rephaim.”
And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the
Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have
chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of
Jezreel.
“The hill country is not enough for us,” they replied, “and all the
Canaanites who live in the valley have iron
chariots, both in Beth-shean with its towns and in the Valley of
Jezreel.”
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye
slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?
So Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you put off entering and possessing the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?
Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description
hither to me,
that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.
When you have
mapped out the seven portions of land and brought it to me, I will cast lots for you here in the presence of the LORD our God.
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and
Gad, and
Reuben, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
The Levites, however, have no portion among you, because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. And
Gad,
Reuben, and half the tribe of
Manasseh have already received the inheritance
that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them beyond the Jordan to the east.”
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them
that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me,
that I may here cast lots for you before the LORD in
Shiloh.
As the men got up to go out, Joshua commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in
Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
And the border went over from thence toward
Luz, to the side of
Luz, which is
Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-
adar, near the hill
that lieth on the south side of the
nether Beth-horon.
From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of
Luz (
that is,
Bethel) and went down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.
