Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”
Then again called they the man
that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know
that this man is a
sinner.
So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know
that this man is a
sinner.”
He answered and said, Whether he be a
sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know,
that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
He answered, “Whether He is a
sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!”
We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”
The man answered and said unto them, Why
herein is a marvellous thing,
that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
“That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
We know
that God does not
listen to sinners, but He does
listen to the one who worships Him and does His will.
Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
Never before has
anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
Jesus heard
that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him,
Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
“Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”
And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
“You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”
But he
that entereth in by the door is the
shepherd of the sheep.
But the one who enters by the gate is the
shepherd of the sheep.
All
that ever came before me are
thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
All who came before Me were
thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not
listen to them.
The
thief cometh not, but for to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come
that they might have life, and
that they might have it more abundantly.
The
thief comes only to
steal and kill and destroy. I have come
that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.
But he
that is an
hireling, and not the
shepherd, whose own the sheep are not,
seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
The
hired hand is not the
shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock.
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one
shepherd.
I have other sheep
that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will
listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock and one
shepherd.
Therefore
doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life,
that I might take it again.
The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again.
Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
But others replied, “These are not the words of a man possessed by a
demon. Can a
demon open the eyes of the blind?”
And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the
dedication, and it was winter.
At
that time the Feast of
Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter,
Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.
“I already told you,” Jesus replied, “but you did not believe. The works I do in My Father’s name
testify on My behalf.
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for
blasphemy; and because
that thou, being a man, makest
thyself God.
“We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews, “but for
blasphemy, because You, who are a man, declare
Yourself to be God.”
Say ye of him, whom the Father hath
sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
then what about the One whom the Father
sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you
accuse Me of
blasphemy for stating
that I am the Son of God?
But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.”
And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no
miracle: but all things
that John spake of this man were true.
Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything he said about this man was true.”
And many believed on him there.
And many in that place believed in Jesus.
When Jesus heard
that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God,
that the Son of God might be
glorified thereby.
When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so
that the Son of God may be
glorified through it.”
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
So on hearing
that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days,
Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to
Judea.”
These things said he: and after
that he saith unto them, Our friend
Lazarus sleepeth; but I go,
that I may
awake him out of sleep.
After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend
Lazarus has fallen
asleep, but I am going there to
wake him up.”
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought
that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
They thought
that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of
Lazarus.
And I am
glad for your sakes
that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
and for your sake I am
glad I was not there, so
that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
Then said Thomas, which is called
Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go,
that we may die with him.
Then Thomas called
Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so
that we may die with Him.”
Then when Jesus came, he found
that he had
lain in the grave four days already.
When Jesus arrived, He found
that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.
Then
Martha, as soon as she heard
that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
So when
Martha heard
that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him; but Mary stayed at home.
But I know,
that even now,
whatsoever thou
wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask of Him.”
Martha saith unto him, I know
that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Martha replied, “I know
that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.
Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.
She saith unto him,
Yea, Lord: I believe
that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
“
Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe
that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in
that place where
Martha met him.
Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where
Martha had met Him.
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary,
that she rose up
hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to
weep there.
When the Jews who were in the house
consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to
mourn there.
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept
Lazarus from dying?”
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone.
Martha, the sister of him
that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
“Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,” said
Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.”
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I
thank thee
that thou hast heard me.
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I
thank You
that You have heard Me.
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.”
And he
that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with
graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a
napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face
wrapped in a cloth. “
Unwrap him and let him go,” Jesus told them.
And one of them, named
Caiaphas, being the high priest
that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
But one of them, named
Caiaphas, who was high priest
that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
You do not
realize that it is better for you
that one man die for the people than
that the whole nation perish.”
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest
that year, he
prophesied that Jesus should die for
that nation;
Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest
that year, he was
prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one.
Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
So from
that day on they
plotted to kill Him.
Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? Will He come to the feast at all?”
Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisees had given a commandment,
that, if any man knew where he were, he should
shew it,
that they might take him.
But the chief priests and
Pharisees had given orders
that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so
that they could arrest Him.
There they made him a
supper; and
Martha served: but
Lazarus was one of them
that sat at the table with him.
This he said, not
that he cared for the poor; but because he was a
thief, and had the
bag, and bare what was put therein.
Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a
thief. As keeper of the money
bag, he used to take from what was put into it.
Much people of the Jews therefore knew
that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but
that they might see
Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned
that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see
Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
But the chief priests consulted
that they might put
Lazarus also to death;
So the chief priests made plans to kill
Lazarus as well,
Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.
On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and
cried,
Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel
that cometh in the name of the Lord.
They took palm branches and went out to meet Him,
shouting: “
Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”
These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was
glorified, then remembered they
that these things were written of him, and
that they had done these things unto him.
At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was
glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized
that these very things had also been written about Him.
The people therefore
that was with him when he called
Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
Meanwhile, many people continued to
testify that they had been with Jesus when He called
Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead.
For this cause the people also met him, for
that they heard
that he had done this
miracle.
That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.
The
Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
Then the
Pharisees said to one another, “You can see
that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”
And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come,
that the Son of man should be
glorified.
But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be
glorified.
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Whoever loves his life will lose it, but
whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour.
The people therefore,
that stood by, and heard it, said
that it
thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
The crowd standing there heard it and said
that it had
thundered. Others said
that an angel had spoken to Him.
The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law
that the Christ will remain
forever. So how can You say
that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he
that walketh in darkness knoweth not
whither he goeth.
Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them.
That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
This was to
fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says:
He hath blinded their eyes, and
hardened their heart;
that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should
heal them.
“He has blinded their eyes and
hardened their hearts, so
that they cannot see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would
heal them.”
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the
Pharisees they did not
confess him, lest they should be put out of the
synagogue:
Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the
Pharisees they did not
confess Him, for fear
that they would be put out of the
synagogue.
Jesus
cried and said, He
that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him
that sent me.
Then Jesus
cried out, “
Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me.
And
whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me.
I am come a light into the world,
that whosoever believeth on me should not
abide in darkness.
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
And I know
that his commandment is life
everlasting:
whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”
Now before the feast of the
passover, when Jesus knew
that his hour was come
that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
It was now just before the
Passover Feast, and Jesus knew
that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end.
Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.
After
that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the
towel that was around Him.
Jesus saith to him, He
that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every
whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
Jesus told him, “
Whoever has already bathed needs only to wash his feet, and he will be completely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.”
For he knew who should
betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
For He knew who would
betray Him.
That is why He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he
that is sent greater than he
that sent him.
Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a
messenger greater than the one who sent him.
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but
that the scripture may be fulfilled, He
that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his
heel against me.
I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to
fulfill the Scripture: ‘The one who shares My bread has lifted up his
heel against Me.’
Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it comes to pass, you will believe that I am He.
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, He
that receiveth
whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he
that receiveth me receiveth him
that sent me.
Truly, truly, I tell you,
whoever receives the one I send receives Me, and
whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me.”
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and
testified, and said,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you,
that one of you shall
betray me.
After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and
testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will
betray Me.”
Simon Peter therefore
beckoned to him,
that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about.
And after the
sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him,
That thou doest, do quickly.
And when
Judas had taken the
morsel,
Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to
Judas, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
For some of them thought, because
Judas had the
bag,
that Jesus had said unto him,
Buy those things
that we have need of against the feast; or,
that he should give something to the poor.
Since
Judas kept the money
bag, some thought
that Jesus was telling him to
buy what was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
By this
everyone will know
that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
