And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be
the fatness of
the earth, and of
the dew of heaven from above;
His father Isaac answered him: “Behold, your dwelling place shall be away from
the richness of
the land, away from
the dew of heaven above.
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
You shall live by
the sword and serve your brother. But when you
rebel, you will
tear his yoke from your neck.”
And
Esau hated Jacob because of
the blessing
wherewith his father blessed him: and
Esau said in his heart,
The days of
mourning for my father are at hand;
then will I
slay my brother Jacob.
Esau held a
grudge against Jacob because of
the blessing his father had given him. And
Esau said in his heart, “
The days of
mourning for my father are at hand;
then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
And
these words of
Esau her elder son were told to
Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother
Esau, as touching
thee,
doth comfort himself, purposing to kill
thee.
When
the words of her older son
Esau were relayed to
Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother
Esau is
consoling himself by
plotting to kill you.
Now
therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise,
flee thou to
Laban my brother to
Haran;
So now, my son, obey my voice and
flee at once to my brother
Laban in
Haran.
Until thy brother’s anger turn away from
thee, and he
forget that which thou hast done to him:
then I will send, and
fetch thee from
thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
until your brother’s
rage against you wanes and he forgets what you have done to him.
Then I will send for you and bring you back from
there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
And
Rebekah said to Isaac, I am
weary of my life because of
the daughters of
Heth: if Jacob take a wife of
the daughters of
Heth, such as
these which are of
the daughters of
the land, what good shall my life do me?
Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am
weary of my life because of
these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a Hittite wife from among
them, what good is my life?”
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of
the daughters of
Canaan.
So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from
the Canaanite women,” he commanded.
Arise, go to Padan-
aram, to
the house of
Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take
thee a wife from
thence of
the daughters of
Laban thy mother’s brother.
“Go at once to Paddan-
aram, to
the house of your mother’s father
Bethuel, and take a wife from among
the daughters of
Laban, your mother’s brother.
And God
Almighty bless thee, and make
thee fruitful, and multiply
thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
May God
Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a company of peoples.
And give
thee the blessing of Abraham, to
thee, and to thy seed with
thee; that thou mayest
inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
And may He give the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants, so that you may possess the land where you dwell as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”
When
Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-
aram, to take him a wife from
thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of
the daughters of
Canaan;
Now
Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-
aram to take a wife
there, commanding him, “Do not marry a
Canaanite woman,”
And
Esau seeing that
the daughters of
Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
And seeing that his father Isaac disapproved of
the Canaanite women,
Then went
Esau unto
Ishmael, and took unto
the wives which he had Mahalath
the daughter of
Ishmael Abraham’s son,
the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.
Esau went to
Ishmael and married Mahalath,
the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Abraham’s son
Ishmael, in addition to
the wives he already had.
And he lighted upon a certain place, and
tarried there all night, because
the sun was set; and he took of
the stones of that place, and put
them for his
pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a
ladder set up on
the earth, and
the top of it reached to heaven: and behold
the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
And Jacob had a dream about a
ladder that rested on
the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down
the ladder.
And, behold,
the LORD stood above it, and said, I am
the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and
the God of Isaac:
the land
whereon thou liest, to
thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and east and north and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
And, behold, I am with
thee, and will keep
thee in all places
whither thou goest, and will bring
thee again into this land; for I will not leave
thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to
thee of.
Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
And Jacob
awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely
the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
When Jacob
woke up, he thought, “Surely
the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”
And he was afraid, and said, How
dreadful is this place! this is none other but
the house of God, and this is
the gate of heaven.
And he was afraid and said, “How
awesome is this place! This is none other than
the house of God; this is
the gate of heaven!”
And Jacob rose up early in
the morning, and took
the stone that he had put for his
pillows, and set it up for a
pillar, and poured oil upon
the top of it.
Early
the next morning, Jacob took
the stone that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a
pillar. He poured oil on top of it,
And he called
the name of that place
Bethel: but
the name of that city was called
Luz at
the first.
and he called that place
Bethel, though previously
the city had been named
Luz.
And Jacob
vowed a
vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and
raiment to put on,
Then Jacob made a
vow, saying, “If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey, and if He will provide me with food to eat and clothes to wear,
So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.
And this stone, which I have set for a
pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give
the tenth unto
thee.
And this stone I have set up as a
pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”
Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
Jacob resumed his journey and came to the land of the people of the east.
And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.
He looked and saw a well in the field, and near it lay three flocks of sheep, because the sheep were watered from this well. And a large stone covered the mouth of the well.
And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
When all
the flocks had been gathered
there,
the shepherds would roll away
the stone from
the mouth of
the well and water
the sheep.
Then they would return
the stone to its place over
the mouth of
the well.
And Jacob said unto
them, My brethren, whence be ye? And
they said, Of
Haran are we.
“My brothers,” Jacob asked
the shepherds, “where are you from?” “We are from
Haran,”
they answered.
And he said unto
them, Know ye
Laban the son of
Nahor? And
they said, We know him.
“Do you know
Laban the grandson of
Nahor?” Jacob asked. “We know him,”
they replied.
And he said unto
them, Is he well? And
they said, He is well: and, behold,
Rachel his daughter cometh with
the sheep.
“Is he well?” Jacob inquired. “
Yes,”
they answered, “and here comes his daughter
Rachel with his sheep.”
And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
“Look,” said Jacob, “it is still broad
daylight; it is not yet time to gather
the livestock. Water
the sheep and take
them back to pasture.”
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
But they replied, “We cannot, until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”
And while he yet spake with
them,
Rachel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept
them.
While he was still speaking with
them,
Rachel arrived with her father’s sheep, for she was a
shepherdess.
And it came to pass, when Jacob saw
Rachel the daughter of
Laban his mother’s brother, and
the sheep of
Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled
the stone from
the well’s mouth, and watered
the flock of
Laban his mother’s brother.
As soon as Jacob saw
Rachel,
the daughter of his mother’s brother
Laban, with
Laban’s sheep, he went up and rolled
the stone away from
the mouth of
the well and watered his uncle’s sheep.
And it came to pass, when
Laban heard
the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and
kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told
Laban all
these things.
When
Laban heard
the news about his sister’s son Jacob, he ran out to meet him. He embraced him and
kissed him and brought him to his home, where Jacob told him all that had happened.
And
Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him
the space of a month.
Then Laban declared, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.” After Jacob had stayed with him a month,
And
Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou
therefore serve me for
nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
Laban said to him, “Just because you are my relative, should you work for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”
And
Laban had two daughters:
the name of
the elder was Leah, and
the name of
the younger was
Rachel.
Now
Laban had two daughters;
the older was named Leah, and
the younger was named
Rachel.
And Jacob loved
Rachel; and said, I will serve
thee seven years for
Rachel thy younger daughter.
Since Jacob loved
Rachel, he answered, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter
Rachel.”
And
Laban said, It is better that I give her to
thee, than that I should give her to another man:
abide with me.
Laban replied, “Better that I give her to you than to another. Stay here with me.”
And Jacob served seven years for
Rachel; and
they seemed unto him but a few days, for
the love he had to her.
So Jacob served seven years for
Rachel, yet it seemed but a few days because of his love for her.
And
Laban gathered together all
the men of
the place, and made a feast.
So
Laban invited all
the men of that place and prepared a feast.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
But when evening came,
Laban took his daughter Leah and gave her to Jacob, and he
slept with her.
And it came to pass, that in
the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to
Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with
thee for
Rachel? wherefore
then hast thou
beguiled me?
When morning came,
there was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob said to
Laban. “Wasn’t it for
Rachel that I served you? Why have you
deceived me?”
And
Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give
the younger before
the firstborn.
Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give
the younger daughter in marriage before
the older.
Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
Finish this week’s
celebration, and we will give you
the younger one in return for another seven years of work.”
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him
Rachel his daughter to wife also.
And Jacob did just that. He finished
the week’s
celebration, and
Laban gave him his daughter
Rachel as his wife.
And when
the LORD saw that Leah was
hated, he opened her
womb: but
Rachel was barren.
When
the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her
womb; but
Rachel was barren.
And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name
Reuben: for she said, Surely
the LORD hath looked upon my
affliction; now
therefore my husband will love me.
And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him
Reuben, for she said, “
The LORD has seen my
affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.”
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because
the LORD hath heard that I was
hated, he hath
therefore given me this son also: and she called his name
Simeon.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Because
the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named him
Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children.
Jacob became
angry with
Rachel and said, “Am I in
the place of God, who has
withheld children from you?”
And she said, Behold my
maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees that I may also have children by her.
Then she said, “Here is my
maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.”
And
Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son:
therefore called she his name
Dan.
And
Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I
wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name
Naphtali.
And Leah said, A
troop cometh: and she called his name
Gad.
Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named him
Gad.
And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.
And
Reuben went in
the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in
the field, and brought
them unto his mother Leah.
Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray
thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.
Now during
the wheat harvest,
Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in
the field. When he brought
them to his mother,
Rachel begged Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said,
Therefore he shall lie with
thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said
Rachel, “he may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And Jacob came out of
the field in
the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have
hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
When Jacob came in from
the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have
hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with her that night.
And God
hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob
the fifth son.
And God
listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son to Jacob.
And Leah said, God hath given me my
hire, because I have given my
maiden to my husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my husband.” So she named him
Issachar.
And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
Give me my wives and children for whom I have served you, that I may go on my way. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
And
Laban said unto him, I pray
thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes,
tarry: for I have learned by experience that
the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
But
Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by
divination that
the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
And he said,
Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
And he added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”
And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
Then Jacob answered, “You know how I have served you and how your
livestock have
thrived under my care.
For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
Indeed, you had very little before my arrival, but now your wealth has increased many times over. The LORD has blessed you wherever I set foot. But now, when may I also provide for my own household?”
And he said, What shall I give
thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou
wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
“What can I give you?”
Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on
shepherding and keeping your flocks.
I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from
thence all
the speckled and
spotted cattle, and all
the brown cattle among
the sheep, and
the spotted and
speckled among
the goats: and of such shall be my
hire.
Let me go through all your flocks
today and remove from
them every
speckled or
spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and every
spotted or
speckled goat.
These will be my wages.
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is not
speckled and
spotted among
the goats, and brown among
the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you come to check on my wages in
the future. If I have any goats that are not
speckled or
spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored,
they will be considered
stolen.”
And he removed that day
the he goats that were
ringstraked and
spotted, and all
the she goats that were
speckled and
spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all
the brown among
the sheep, and gave
them into
the hand of his sons.
That very day
Laban removed all
the streaked or
spotted male goats and every
speckled or
spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed
them under
the care of his sons.
And he set three days journey
betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed
the rest of
Laban’s flocks.
Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was
shepherding the rest of
Laban’s flocks.
And Jacob took him rods of green
poplar, and of
the hazel and
chesnut tree; and
pilled white strakes in
them, and made
the white appear which was in
the rods.
Jacob, however, took fresh branches of
poplar,
almond, and plane trees, and
peeled the bark,
exposing the white inner wood of
the branches.
And he set
the rods which he had
pilled before
the flocks in
the gutters in
the watering troughs when
the flocks came to drink, that
they should conceive when
they came to drink.
Then he set
the peeled branches in
the watering troughs in front of
the flocks coming in to drink. So when
the flocks were in heat and came to drink,
And Jacob did separate
the lambs, and set
the faces of
the flocks toward
the ringstraked, and all
the brown in
the flock of
Laban; and he put his own flocks by
themselves, and put
them not unto
Laban’s cattle.
Jacob set apart
the young, but made
the rest face
the streaked dark-colored sheep in
Laban’s flocks.
Then he set his own stock apart and did not put
them with
Laban’s animals.
And it came to pass,
whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid
the rods before
the eyes of
the cattle in
the gutters, that
they might conceive among
the rods.
Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches.
But when
the cattle were feeble, he put
them not in: so
the feebler were
Laban’s, and
the stronger Jacob’s.
But if
the animals were weak, he did not set out
the branches. So
the weaker animals went to
Laban and
the stronger ones to Jacob.
And
the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and
asses.
Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and
donkeys.
And he heard
the words of
Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he
gotten all this glory.
Now Jacob heard that
Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken away all that belonged to our father and built all this wealth at our father’s expense.”
And Jacob
beheld the countenance of
Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.
And Jacob saw from
the countenance of
Laban that his attitude toward him had changed.
And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
And Jacob sent and called
Rachel and Leah to
the field unto his flock,
So Jacob sent word and called
Rachel and Leah to
the field where his flocks were,
And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
and he told them, “I can see from your father’s countenance that his attitude toward me has changed; but the God of my father has been with me.
If he said, ‘
The speckled will be your wages,’
then the whole flock bore
speckled offspring. If he said, ‘
The streaked will be your wages,’
then the whole flock bore
streaked offspring.
Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
Thus God has taken away your father’s
livestock and given
them to me.
And it came to pass at
the time that
the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold,
the rams which
leaped upon
the cattle were
ringstraked,
speckled, and
grisled.
When
the flocks were breeding, I saw in a dream that
the streaked,
spotted, and
speckled males were mating with
the females.
And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ And I replied, ‘Here I am.’
‘Look up,’ he said, ‘and see that all
the males that are mating with
the flock are
streaked,
spotted, or
speckled; for I have seen all that
Laban has done to you.
I am
the God of
Bethel, where thou anointedst
the pillar, and where thou vowedst a
vow unto me: now arise, get
thee out from this land, and return unto
the land of thy kindred.
I am
the God of
Bethel, where you
anointed the pillar and made a solemn
vow to Me. Now get up and leave this land at once, and return to your native land.’”
And
Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is
there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?
And
Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we have any portion or inheritance left in our father’s house?
For all
the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s: now
then,
whatsoever God hath said unto
thee, do.
Surely all the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So do whatever God has told you.”
