And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of
Jonas the prophet.
As the crowds were increasing, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It demands a sign, but none
will be given it except the sign of
Jonah.
For as
Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
For as
Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man
will be a sign to this generation.
The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and
condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
The Queen of the South
will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and
condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here.
The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than
Jonas is here.
The men of
Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and
condemn it; for they
repented at the preaching of
Jonah, and now One greater than
Jonah is here.
If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright
shining of a
candle doth give thee light.
So if your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, you
will be
radiant, as though a lamp were
shining on you.”
But rather give
alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
But give as
alms the things that are within you, and you
will see that everything is clean for you.
And he said,
Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye
lade men with burdens
grievous to be borne, and ye
yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
“
Woe to you as well, experts in the law!” He replied. “You
weigh men down with heavy burdens, but you
yourselves will not lift a finger to
lighten their load.
Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I
will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall
slay and
persecute:
Because of this, the wisdom of God said, ‘I
will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they
will kill and others they
will persecute.’
That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
As a result, this generation will be charged with the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the foundation of the world,
From the blood of
Abel unto the blood of
Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple:
verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
from the blood of
Abel to the blood of
Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.
Yes, I tell you, all of it
will be charged to this generation.
For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither
hid, that shall not be known.
There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
Therefore
whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
What you have spoken in the dark
will be heard in the
daylight, and what you have
whispered in the inner rooms
will be proclaimed from the housetops.
But I
will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into
hell;
yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
But I
will show you whom you should fear: Fear the One who, after you have been killed, has authority to throw you into
hell.
Yes, I tell you, fear Him!
Also I say unto you,
Whosoever shall
confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also
confess before the angels of God:
I tell you,
everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man
will also
confess him before the angels of God.
But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
But
whoever denies Me before men
will be denied before the angels of God.
And
whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be
forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be
forgiven.
For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
For at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you should say.”
And he said, This
will I do: I
will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there
will I
bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Then he said, ‘This is what I
will do: I
will tear down my barns and
will build
bigger ones, and there I
will store up all my grain and my goods.
And I
will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be
merry.
Then I
will say to myself, “You have
plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be
merry!”’
But God said unto him, Thou
fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
But God said to him, ‘You
fool! This very night your life
will be required of you. Then who
will own what you have accumulated?’
So is he that layeth up
treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
This is how it
will be for
anyone who stores up
treasure for himself but is not rich toward God.”
And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not
worry about your life, what you
will eat, or about your body, what you
will wear.
If then God so
clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to
morrow is cast into the
oven; how much more
will he
clothe you, O ye of little faith?
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here
today and
tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more
will He
clothe you, O you of little faith!
And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
And do not be concerned about what you
will eat or drink. Do not
worry about it.
But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added unto you.
Sell that ye have, and give
alms; provide
yourselves bags which wax not old, a
treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no
thief approacheth, neither
moth corrupteth.
For where your
treasure is, there
will your heart be also.
For where your
treasure is, there your heart
will be also.
And ye
yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he
will return from the
wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.
Then you
will be like servants waiting for their master to return from the
wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.
Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching:
verily I say unto you, that he shall
gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and
will come forth and serve them.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds on watch when he returns. Truly I tell you, he
will dress himself to serve and
will have them
recline at the table, and he himself
will come and wait on them.
And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night and finds them
alert, those servants
will be blessed.
Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.”
Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be
drunken;
But suppose that servant says in his heart, ‘My master
will be a long time in coming,’ and he begins to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink and get
drunk.
The lord of that servant
will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and
will cut him in
sunder, and
will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
The master of that servant
will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not
anticipate. Then he
will cut him to pieces and
assign him a place with the unbelievers.
And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows.
But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto
whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they
will ask the more.
But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment
will be beaten with few blows. From
everyone who has been given much, much
will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more
will be demanded.
I am come to send fire on the earth; and what
will I if it be already
kindled?
I have come to
ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already
kindled!
For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.
The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It will be hot,’ and it is.
I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last
mite.
I tell you, you
will not get out until you have paid the very last
penny.”
I tell you,
Nay: but, except ye
repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
No, I tell you. But unless you
repent, you too
will all perish.
I tell you,
Nay: but, except ye
repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
No, I tell you. But unless you
repent, you too
will all perish.”
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
“Lord,” someone asked Him, “will only a few people be saved?” Jesus answered,
Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you,
will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.
When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to
knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:
After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you
will stand outside
knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he
will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’
Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and
drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
Then you
will say, ‘We
ate and
drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’
But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’
There shall be
weeping and
gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you
yourselves thrust out.
There
will be
weeping and
gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you
yourselves are thrown out.
And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
People
will come from east and west and north and south, and
will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.
And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
And indeed, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”
The same day there came certain of the
Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod
will kill thee.
At that very hour, some
Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.”
And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to
morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I
will keep driving out demons and
healing people
today and
tomorrow, and on the third day I
will reach My
goal.’
Behold, your house is left unto you
desolate: and
verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Look, your house is left to you
desolate. And I tell you that you
will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an
ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and
will not
straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?”
And he that
bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
Then the host who invited both of you
will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in
humiliation, you
will have to take the last place.
But when thou art
bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that
bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host
will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you
will be honored in front of
everyone at the table with you.
For
everyone who exalts himself
will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself
will be
exalted.”
Then said he also to him that
bade him, When thou makest a
dinner or a
supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy
kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also
bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a
dinner or a
banquet, do not
invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may
invite you in return, and you
will be repaid.
And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot
recompense thee: for thou shalt be
recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
When one of those
reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is
everyone who
will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the
highways and hedges, and
compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
So the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the
highways and hedges and
compel them to come in, so that my house
will be full.
For I say unto you, That none of those men which were
bidden shall taste of my
supper.
For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited
will taste my
banquet.’”
Lest
haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to
mock him,
Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work,
everyone who sees it
will ridicule him,
Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
Or what king on his way to war with another king
will not first sit down and consider whether he can
engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an
ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
And if he is unable, he
will send a
delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.
Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be seasoned?
Salt is good, but if the salt loses its
savor, with what
will it be seasoned?
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one
sinner that repenteth, more than over
ninety and nine just persons, which need no
repentance.
In the same way, I tell you that there
will be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over
ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to
repent.
I
will arise and go to my father, and
will say unto him, Father, I have
sinned against heaven, and before thee,
I
will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you.
I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the
stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
I know what I
will do, so that after my removal from management, people
will welcome me into their homes.’
And I say unto you, Make to
yourselves friends of the
mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into
everlasting habitations.
I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for
yourselves, so that when it is gone, they
will welcome you into eternal dwellings.
He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous
mammon, who
will commit to your trust the true riches?
So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who
will entrust you with true riches?
And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?
And if you have not been faithful with the belongings of another, who will give you belongings of your own?
No servant can serve two masters: for either he
will hate the one, and love the other; or else he
will hold to the one, and
despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.
No servant can serve two masters. Either he
will hate the one and love the other, or he
will be devoted to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
For I have five brethren; that he may
testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of
torment.
for I have five brothers. Let him
warn them, so that they
will not also end up in this place of
torment.’
And he said,
Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they
will repent.
‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they
will repent.’
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not
listen to Moses and the prophets, they
will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences
will come: but
woe unto him, through whom they come!
Jesus said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that
stumbling blocks
will come, but
woe to the one through whom they come!
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of
mustard seed, ye might say unto this
sycamine tree, Be thou
plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
And the Lord answered, “If you have faith the size of a
mustard seed, you can say to this
mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it
will obey you.
But which of you, having a servant
plowing or feeding cattle,
will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
Which of you whose servant comes in from
plowing or
shepherding in the field
will say to him, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’?
And
will not rather say unto him, Make ready
wherewith I may
sup, and
gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and
drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?
Instead, won’t he tell him, ‘Prepare my meal and dress
yourself to serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’?
And when he was demanded of the
Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
When asked by the
Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God
will not come with observable signs.
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Nor will people say, ‘Look, here it is,’ or ‘There it is.’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”
And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not seeit.
Then He said to the disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
People
will tell you, ‘Look, there He is!’ or ‘Look, here He is!’ Do not go out or
chase after them.
For as the
lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
For just as the
lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so
will be the Son of Man in His day.
And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Just as it was in the days of
Noah, so also
will it be in the days of the Son of Man:
Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and
whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
Whoever tries to save his life
will lose it, but
whoever loses his life
will preserve it.
I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed: one will be taken and the other left.
Two women shall be
grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Two women
will be
grinding grain together: one
will be taken and the other left.”
And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them,
Wheresoever the body is, thither
will the eagles be gathered together.
“Where, Lord?” they asked. Jesus answered, “Wherever there is a
carcass, there the vultures
will gather.”
Yet because this widow troubleth me, I
will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she
weary me.
yet because this widow keeps
pestering me, I
will give her justice. Then she
will stop wearing me out with her perpetual requests.’”
And shall not God
avenge his own
elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
Will not God bring about justice for His
elect who cry out to Him day and night?
Will He continue to
defer their help?
I tell you that he
will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
I tell you, He
will promptly carry out justice on their behalf. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes,
will He find faith on earth?”
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be
exalted.
I tell you, this man, rather than the
Pharisee, went home justified. For
everyone who exalts himself
will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself
will be
exalted.”
Verily I say unto you,
Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
Truly I tell you,
anyone who does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child
will never enter it.”
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
On hearing this, Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you
will have
treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
Who shall not receive
manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life
everlasting.
will fail to receive many times more in this age—and in the age to come, eternal life.”
