Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
Listen, my son, and receive my words, and the
years of your life will be many.
Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
lest you
concede your
vigor to others, and your
years to one who is cruel;
There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are
detestable to Him:
For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
For she has brought many down to death; her slain are many in number.
Riches and honour are with me;
yea,
durable riches and righteousness.
With me are riches and honor,
enduring wealth and righteousness.
My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
My fruit is better than gold, pure gold, and my harvest surpasses choice silver.
For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
For through wisdom your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.
The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the
years of the wicked shall be
shortened.
The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be cut short.
The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
The LORD has made everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of
disaster.
Drive out the
mocker, and conflict will depart; even quarreling and insults will cease.
Yea, my
reins shall
rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
My inmost being will
rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas or lying on the top of a mast:
A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge enhances his strength.
Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will bring delight to your soul.
The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:
The
leech has two daughters: Give and Give. There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:
There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:
There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:
There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:
There are three things that are stately in their
stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:
She stretcheth out her hand to the poor;
yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the
needy.
She opens her arms to the poor and reaches out her hands to the
needy.
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have
gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem:
yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
Yea, I
hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
I
hated all for which I had
toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.
For all his days are sorrows, and his
travail grief;
yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
Indeed, all his days are filled with grief, and his task is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is
futile.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
For the fates of both men and beasts are the same: As one dies, so dies the other—they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage over the animals, since everything is
futile.
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
There is one alone, and there is not a second;
yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and
bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity,
yea, it is a
sore travail.
There is a man all alone, without even a son or brother. And though there is no end to his labor, his eyes are still not content with his wealth: “For whom do I
toil and
bereave my soul of enjoyment?” This too is
futile—a
miserable task.
If a man
beget an hundred children, and live many
years, so that the days of his
years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
A man may father a hundred children and live for many
years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he is unsatisfied with his prosperity and does not even receive a proper burial, I say that a
stillborn child is better off than he.
Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
It is good to
grasp the one and not let the other slip from your hand. For he who fears God will follow both warnings.
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and afterward they join the dead.
Yea also, when he that is a
fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a
fool.
Even as the
fool walks along the road, his sense is lacking, and he shows
everyone that he is a
fool.
But if a man live many
years, and
rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
So if a man lives many
years, let him
rejoice in them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is
futile.
Remember now thy
Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the
years draw
nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
Remember your
Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of
adversity come and the
years approach of which you will say, “I find no pleasure in them,”
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.
How handsome you are, my beloved! Oh, how delightful! The soft grass is our bed.
I am come into my garden, my sister, my
spouse: I have gathered my
myrrh with my
spice; I have eaten my
honeycomb with my honey; I have
drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink,
yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.
I have come to my garden, my sister, my
bride; I have gathered my
myrrh with my
spice. I have eaten my
honeycomb with my honey; I have
drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends, and drink; drink freely, O beloved.
His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
His mouth is most sweet; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
My
dove, my
undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her;
yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
but my
dove, my perfect one, is unique, the
favorite of the mother who bore her. The maidens see her and call her blessed; the queens and concubines sing her praises.
O that thou
wert as my brother, that
sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would
kiss thee;
yea, I should not be
despised.
O that you were to me like a brother who
nursed at my mother’s breasts! If I found you outdoors, I would
kiss you, and no one would
despise me.
And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you multiply your prayers, I will not
listen. Your hands are covered with blood.
Yea, ten acres of
vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an
ephah.
For ten acres of
vineyard will yield but a bath of wine, and a homer of seed only an
ephah of grain.”
Their
roaring shall be like a lion, they shall
roar like young lions:
yea, they shall
roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
Their
roaring is like that of a lion; they
roar like young lions. They
growl and seize their prey; they carry it away from
deliverance.
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
In the
year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and
exalted; and the train of His
robe filled the temple.
For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within
threescore and five
years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.
For the head of
Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five
years Ephraim will be
shattered as a people.
Yea, the
fir trees
rejoice at thee, and the cedars of
Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
In the
year that king
Ahaz died was this burden.
In the
year that King
Ahaz died, this burden was received:
My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall
flee unto Zoar, an
heifer of three
years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with
weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction.
My heart
cries out over Moab; her fugitives
flee as far as Zoar, as far as Eglath-shelishiyah. With
weeping they
ascend the slope of Luhith; they
lament their destruction on the road to Horonaim.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three
years, as the
years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all that great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three
years, as a
hired worker counts the
years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and
oblation;
yea, they shall
vow a
vow unto the LORD, and perform it.
The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and on that day Egypt will acknowledge the LORD. They will worship with sacrifices and offerings; they will make vows to the LORD and
fulfill them.
In the
year that
Tartan came unto
Ashdod, (when
Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against
Ashdod, and took it;
Before the
year that the chief commander, sent by
Sargon king of Assyria, came to
Ashdod and attacked and captured it,
And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and
barefoot three
years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon
Ethiopia;
Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and
barefoot for three
years as a sign and
omen against Egypt and
Cush,
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a
year, according to the
years of an
hireling, and all the glory of
Kedar shall fail:
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Within one
year, as a
hired worker would count it, all the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy
years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy
years shall Tyre sing as an
harlot.
At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy
years—the span of a king’s life. But at the end of seventy
years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the
harlot:
And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy
years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.
And at the end of seventy
years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the
remembrance of thee.
Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path of Your judgments. Your name and
renown are the desire of our souls.
With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be
ashamed for their
envy at the people;
yea, the fire of thine enemies shall
devour them.
O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your people and be put to shame. The fire set for Your enemies will
consume them!
Woe to
Ariel, to
Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye
year to
year; let them kill sacrifices.
Woe to you, O
Ariel, the city of
Ariel where David camped!
Year upon
year let your festivals
recur.
Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as
chaff that passeth away:
yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.
But your many foes will be like fine dust, the multitude of the
ruthless like blowing
chaff. Then suddenly, in an instant,
For
Tophet is ordained of old;
yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of
brimstone,
doth kindle it.
For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready for the king. Its funeral
pyre is deep and wide, with
plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the LORD, like a
torrent of burning sulfur, sets it
ablaze.
Many days and
years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the
vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.
In a little more than a
year you will
tremble, O secure ones. For the
grape harvest will fail and the fruit harvest will not arrive.
Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers;
yea, upon all the houses of joy in the
joyous city:
and for the land of my people, overgrown with thorns and briers— even for every house of
merriment in this city of
revelry.
For it is the day of the LORD’S
vengeance, and the
year of recompences for the controversy of
Zion.
Now it came to pass in the
fourteenth year of king
Hezekiah, that
Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this
year such as groweth of itself; and the second
year that which springeth of the same: and in the third
year sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This
year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second
year what springs from the same. But in the third
year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
Go, and say to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen
years.
“Go and tell
Hezekiah that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen
years to your life.
I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.
I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of
Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my
years.”
What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my
years because of the
anguish of my soul.
Yea, they shall not be planted;
yea, they shall not be sown:
yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the
whirlwind shall take them away as
stubble.
No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner have their stems taken root in the ground, than He blows on them and they wither, and a
whirlwind sweeps them away like
stubble.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will
strengthen thee;
yea, I will help thee;
yea, I will
uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will
strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will
uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
Shew the things that are to come
hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods:
yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.
Tell us the things that are to come, so that we may know that you are gods.
Yes, do something good or evil, that we may look on together in dismay.
Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and
beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous?
yea, there is none that sheweth,
yea, there is none that declareth,
yea, there is none that heareth your words.
Who has declared this from the beginning, so that we may know, and from times past, so that we may say: ‘He was right’? No one
announced it, no one
foretold it, no one heard your words.
The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall
stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry,
yea,
roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.
The LORD goes forth like a mighty one; He stirs up His zeal like a
warrior. He shouts;
yes, He roars in triumph over His enemies:
Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
everyone called by My name and created for My glory, whom I have indeed formed and made.”
Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?
Even from
eternity I am He, and none can deliver out of My hand. When I act, who can reverse it?”
Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.
Do not
tremble or fear. Have I not told you and declared it long ago? You are My witnesses! Is there any God but Me? There is no other Rock; I know not one.”
The smith with the
tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it with his strong arms. Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he fails to drink water and grows
faint.
Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself;
yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread;
yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a
graven image, and falleth down
thereto.
It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it to warm himself, and he kindles a fire and bakes his bread; he even fashions it into a god and worships it; he makes an
idol and bows down to it.
He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth
roast, and is satisfied:
yea, he warmeth himself, and saith,
Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
He burns half of it in the fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the
roast and is satisfied. Indeed, he warms himself and says, “
Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”
And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire;
yea, also I have
baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have
roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an
abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
And no one considers in his heart, no one has the knowledge or insight to say, “I burned half of it in the fire, and I
baked bread on its coals; I
roasted meat and I
ate. Shall I make something
detestable with the rest of it? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
Speak up and present your case—
yes, let them take counsel together. Who
foretold this long ago? Who
announced it from ancient times? Was it not I, the LORD? There is no other God but Me, a righteous God and
Savior; there is none but Me.
They
lavish gold out of the
bag, and
weigh silver in the balance, and
hire a
goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down,
yea, they worship.
They pour out their bags of gold and
weigh out silver on scales; they
hire a
goldsmith to fashion it into a god, so they can bow down and worship.
They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.
They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands, not
budging from that spot. They cry out to it, but it does not answer; it saves no one from his troubles.
Calling a
ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country:
yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
I
summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose from a far-off land. Truly I have spoken, and truly I will bring it to pass. I have
planned it, and I will surely do it.
Thy nakedness shall be uncovered,
yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take
vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.
Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame will be exposed. I will take
vengeance; I will
spare no one.”
Yea, thou heardest not;
yea, thou knewest not;
yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very
treacherously, and
wast called a
transgressor from the
womb.
You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you have been called a
rebel from birth.
I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
I, even I, have spoken;
yes, I have called him. I have brought him, and he will succeed in his mission.
Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye,
buy, and eat;
yea, come,
buy wine and milk without money and without price.
“Come, all you who are
thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come,
buy, and eat! Come,
buy wine and milk without money and without cost!
All ye beasts of the field, come to
devour,
yea, all ye beasts in the forest.
Come, all you beasts of the field; eat
greedily, all you beasts of the forest.
Yea, they are
greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are
shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.
Like
ravenous dogs, they are never satisfied. They are
shepherds with no
discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking his own gain:
Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
Truth is missing, and
whoever turns from evil becomes prey. The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice.
For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; it will be utterly destroyed.
For the day of
vengeance is in mine heart, and the
year of my redeemed is come.
Look down from heaven, and behold from the
habitation of thy
holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy
bowels and of thy
mercies toward me? are they restrained?
Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious
habitation. Where are Your zeal and might? Your
yearning and
compassion for me are restrained.
There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred
years old; but the
sinner being an hundred
years old shall be
accursed.
No longer will a
nursing infant live but a few days, or an old man fail to live out his
years. For the youth will die at a hundred
years, and he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered
accursed.
He that killeth an ox is as if he
slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an
oblation, as if he offered
swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an
idol.
Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man;
whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood;
whoever offers
frankincense is like one who blesses an
idol. Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.
To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of
Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the
thirteenth year of his reign.
The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the
thirteenth year of the reign of
Josiah son of Amon king of Judah,
and through the days of
Jehoiakim son of
Josiah king of Judah, until the fifth month of the
eleventh year of
Zedekiah son of
Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.
