Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died, leaving no children.
And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.
Then the second one married the widow, but he also died and left no children. And the third did likewise.
And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.
In this way, none of the seven left any children. And last of all, the woman died.
And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore
err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?
Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the
bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham,
and the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob?
But concerning the dead rising, have you not read about the burning
bush in the Book of Moses, how God told him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob’?
And one of the
scribes came,
and having heard them reasoning together,
and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
Now one of the
scribes had come up
and heard their
debate. Noticing how well Jesus had answered them, he asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”
And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
The second is this: ‘Love your
neighbor as
yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
And the
scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God;
and there is none other but he:
“Right, Teacher,” the
scribe replied. “You have stated correctly that God is One
and there is no other but Him,
And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
and to love Him with all your heart
and with all your understanding
and with all your strength,
and to love your
neighbor as
yourself, which is more important than all burnt offerings
and sacrifices.”
And when Jesus saw that he answered
discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.
And no man after that
durst ask him any question.
When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely, He said, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”
And no one
dared to question Him any further.
And Jesus answered
and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the
scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, He asked, “How can the
scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?
David therefore himself calleth him Lord;
and whence is he then his son?
And the common people heard him
gladly.
David himself calls Him ‘Lord.’ So how can He be David’s son?”
And the large crowd
listened to Him with delight.
And he said unto them in his doctrine,
Beware of the
scribes, which love to go in long clothing,
and love
salutations in the marketplaces,
In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the
scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,
And the chief seats in the synagogues,
and the
uppermost rooms at feasts:
and to have the chief seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
And Jesus sat over against the treasury,
and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury:
and many that were rich cast in much.
As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, He watched the crowd putting money into it. And many rich people put in large amounts.
And there came a certain poor widow,
and she threw in two mites, which make a
farthing.
Then one poor widow came
and put in two small copper coins, which amounted to a small fraction of a
denarius.
And he called unto him his disciples,
and saith unto them,
Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury.
And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!
As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look at the magnificent stones and buildings!”
And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
“Do you see all these great buildings?” Jesus replied. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately,
Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
“Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to be fulfilled?”
And Jesus answering them began to say, Take
heed lest any man
deceive you:
Jesus began by telling them, “See to it that no one deceives you.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ;
and shall
deceive many.
Many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’
and will
deceive many.
And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.
When you hear of wars
and rumors of wars, do not be
alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.
For nation shall rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be earthquakes in
divers places,
and there shall be famines
and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, as well as famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
But take
heed to
yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils;
and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten:
and ye shall be brought before rulers
and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
So be on your guard. You will be delivered over to the councils and beaten in the synagogues. On My account you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.
And the gospel must first be published among all nations.
And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations.
But when they shall lead you,
and deliver you up, take no thought
beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye
premeditate: but
whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
But when they arrest you
and hand you over, do not
worry beforehand what to say. Instead, speak whatever you are given at that time, for it will not be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
Now the brother shall
betray the brother to death,
and the father the son;
and children shall rise up against their parents,
and shall cause them to be put to death.
Brother will
betray brother to death,
and a father his child. Children will rise against their parents
and have them put to death.
And ye shall be
hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall
endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
You will be
hated by
everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:
Let no one on the housetop go back inside to
retrieve anything from his house.
And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.
And let no one in the field return for his
cloak.
But
woe to them that are with child,
and to them that give
suck in those days!
And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.
Pray that this will not occur in the winter.
For in those days shall be
affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
For those will be days of
tribulation unmatched from the beginning of God’s creation until now,
and never to be seen again.
And except that the Lord had
shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the
elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath
shortened the days.
If the Lord had not cut short those days,
nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the
elect, whom He has chosen, He has cut them short.
And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:
At that time if
anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it.
For false Christs
and false prophets shall rise,
and shall
shew signs
and wonders, to
seduce, if it were possible, even the
elect.
For false Christs
and false prophets will appear
and perform signs
and wonders that would
deceive even the
elect, if that were possible.
But in those days, after that
tribulation, the sun shall be
darkened,
and the moon shall not give her light,
But in those days, after that
tribulation: ‘The sun will be
darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
And the stars of heaven shall fall,
and the powers that are in heaven shall be
shaken.
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the powers of the heavens will be
shaken.’
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
And then shall he send his angels,
and shall gather together his
elect from the four winds, from the
uttermost part of the earth to the
uttermost part of heaven.
And He will send out the angels to gather His
elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
Now learn this
lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender
and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Take ye
heed, watch
and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
Be on your guard
and stay
alert! For you do not know when the appointed time will come.
For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant in charge of his own task,
and instructed the
doorkeeper to keep watch.
Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
Otherwise, he may arrive without notice and find you sleeping.
And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
And what I say to you, I say to
everyone: Keep watch!”
After two days was the feast of the
passover,
and of
unleavened bread:
and the chief priests
and the
scribes sought how they might take him by craft,
and put him to death.
Now the
Passover and the Feast of
Unleavened Bread were two days away,
and the chief priests
and scribes were looking for a
covert way to arrest Jesus
and kill Him.
And there were some that had
indignation within themselves,
and said, Why was this waste of the
ointment made?
Some of those present, however, expressed their
indignation to one another: “Why this waste of
perfume?
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred
pence,
and have been given to the poor.
And they
murmured against her.
It could have been sold for over three hundred
denarii and the money given to the poor.”
And they
scolded her.
And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone; why are you
bothering her? She has done a beautiful deed to Me.
For ye have the poor with you always,
and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me.
Verily I say unto you,
Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a
memorial of her.
And truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
And when they heard it, they were
glad,
and promised to give him money.
And he sought how he might conveniently
betray him.
They were delighted to hear this,
and they promised to give him money. So
Judas began to look for an opportunity to
betray Jesus.
And the first day of
unleavened bread, when they killed the
passover, his disciples said unto him, Where
wilt thou that we go
and prepare that thou mayest eat the
passover?
On the first day of the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, when the
Passover lamb was to be sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the
Passover?”
And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
So He sent two of His disciples
and told them, “Go into the city,
and a man carrying a
jug of water will meet you. Follow him,
And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the
goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the
passover with my disciples?
and whichever house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is My
guest room, where I may eat the
Passover with My disciples?’
And he will
shew you a large upper room furnished
and prepared: there make ready for us.
And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
And his disciples went forth,
and came into the city,
and found as he had said unto them:
and they made ready the
passover.
So the disciples left
and went into the city, where they found everything as Jesus had described.
And they prepared the
Passover.
And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
And as they sat
and did eat, Jesus said,
Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall
betray me.
And while they were
reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you who is eating with Me will
betray Me.”
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
They began to be
grieved and to ask Him one after another, “Surely not I?”
And he answered
and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the
dish.
He answered, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is
dipping his hand into the
bowl with Me.
And as they did eat, Jesus took bread,
and blessed,
and brake it,
and gave to them,
and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it; this is My body.”
And he took the cup,
and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them:
and they all
drank of it.
Then He took the cup, gave
thanks,
and gave it to them,
and they all
drank from it.
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
And when they had sung an
hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
And when they had sung a
hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be
offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will
smite the
shepherd,
and the sheep shall be scattered.
Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written: ‘I will strike the
Shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
And Jesus saith unto him,
Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the
cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me
thrice.
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “this very night, before the
rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
But he spake the more
vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
But Peter kept
insisting, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.”
And all the others said the same thing.
And they came to a place which was named
Gethsemane:
and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
Then they came to a place called
Gethsemane,
and Jesus told His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
And he taketh with him Peter
and James
and John,
and began to be
sore amazed,
and to be very heavy;
He took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be deeply troubled and distressed.
And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death:
tarry ye here,
and watch.
Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.”
And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.
And he said,
Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou
wilt.
“
Abba, Father,” He said, “all things are possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.”
And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
Then Jesus returned
and found them sleeping. “Simon, are you
asleep?” He asked. “Were you not able to keep watch for one hour?
Watch ye
and pray, lest ye enter into
temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
Watch
and pray so that you will not enter into
temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
Again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing.
And when he returned, he found them
asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither
wist they what to answer him.
And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping—for their eyes were heavy. And they did not know what to answer Him.
And he cometh the third time,
and saith unto them, Sleep on now,
and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners.
When Jesus returned the third time, He said, “Are you still sleeping
and resting? That is enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners.
And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh
Judas, one of the twelve,
and with him a great multitude with swords
and staves, from the chief priest
and the
scribes and the elders.
While Jesus was still speaking,
Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd armed with swords
and clubs, sent from the chief priests,
scribes,
and elders.
Now the
betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I
kiss is the man; arrest Him
and lead Him away securely.”
And as soon as he was come, he goeth
straightway to him,
and saith, Master, master;
and kissed him.
Going directly to Jesus, he said, “
Rabbi!”
and kissed Him.
And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
Then the men seized Jesus and arrested Him.
And one of them that stood by drew a sword,
and smote a servant of the high priest,
and cut off his ear.
And one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
And Jesus answered
and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a
thief, with swords
and with
staves to take me?
Jesus asked the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw?
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.
Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me. But this has happened that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.”
And they all
forsook him,
and fled.
And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
One young man who had been following Jesus was wearing a linen cloth around his body. They caught hold of him,
And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
but he pulled free of the linen cloth and ran away naked.
And they led Jesus away to the high priest:
and with him were assembled all the chief priests
and the elders
and the
scribes.
They led Jesus away to the high priest,
and all the chief priests, elders,
and scribes assembled.
And Peter followed him
afar off, even into the palace of the high priest:
and he sat with the servants,
and warmed himself at the fire.
Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the
courtyard of the high priest.
And he sat with the officers
and warmed himself by the fire.
And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
Now the chief priests
and the whole
Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any.
