And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of
Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.
and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of
Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, saying,
Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the
Amorites, saying,
And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole army
and went out to
confront Israel in the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.
And Israel
smote him with the edge of the sword,
and possessed his land from
Arnon unto
Jabbok, even unto the children of
Ammon: for the border of the children of
Ammon was strong.
And Israel put him to the sword
and took possession of his land, from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok—but only up to the border of the
Ammonites, because it was fortified.
And Israel took all these cities:
and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the
Amorites, in
Heshbon,
and in all the villages thereof.
Israel captured all the cities of the
Amorites and occupied them, including
Heshbon and all its villages.
For
Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the
Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab,
and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto
Arnon.
Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab
and taken all his land as far as the
Arnon.
Wherefore they that speak in
proverbs say, Come into
Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built
and prepared:
That is why the poets say: “Come to
Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the city of Sihon be restored.
For there is a fire gone out of
Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab,
and the lords of the high places of
Arnon.
For a fire went out from
Heshbon, a
blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the rulers of
Arnon’s heights.
Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of
Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped,
and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the
Amorites.
Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of
Chemosh! He gave up his sons as refugees,
and his daughters into captivity to Sihon king of the
Amorites.
We have shot at them;
Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon,
and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
But we have overthrown them;
Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon. We
demolished them as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.”
And Moses sent to
spy out Jaazer,
and they took the villages thereof,
and drove out the
Amorites that were there.
After Moses had sent
spies to Jazer, Israel captured its villages
and drove out the
Amorites who were there.
And they turned
and went up by the way of
Bashan:
and Og the king of
Bashan went out against them, he,
and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
Then they turned
and went up the road to
Bashan,
and Og king of
Bashan and his whole army came out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand,
and all his people,
and his land;
and thou shalt do to him as thou
didst unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, which dwelt at
Heshbon.
But the LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, along with all his people
and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon.”
So they
smote him,
and his sons,
and all his people, until there was none left him alive:
and they possessed his land.
So they struck down
Og, along with his sons
and his whole army, until no
remnant was left.
And they took possession of his land.
And the children of Israel set forward,
and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by
Jericho.
Then the Israelites traveled on
and camped in the plains of Moab near the Jordan, across from
Jericho.
And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the
Amorites.
Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the
Amorites,
And Moab was
sore afraid of the people, because they were many:
and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
and Moab was
terrified of the people because they were numerous. Indeed, Moab
dreaded the Israelites.
And Moab said unto the elders of
Midian, Now shall this company
lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field.
And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
So the Moabites said to the elders of
Midian, “This
horde will
devour everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” Since Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time,
He sent messengers therefore unto
Balaam the son of Beor to
Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth,
and they
abide over against me:
he sent messengers to
Balaam son of Beor at
Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people. “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt,” said Balak. “They cover the face of the land
and have settled next to me.
Come now therefore, I pray thee,
curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me:
peradventure I shall prevail, that we may
smite them,
and that I may drive them out of the land: for I
wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed,
and he whom thou cursest is
cursed.
So please come now
and put a
curse on this people, because they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them
and drive them out of the land; for I know that those you
bless are blessed,
and those you
curse are
cursed.”
And the elders of Moab
and the elders of
Midian departed with the rewards of
divination in their hand;
and they came unto
Balaam,
and spake unto him the words of Balak.
The elders of Moab
and Midian departed with the fees for
divination in hand. They came to
Balaam and relayed to him the words of Balak.
And he said unto them,
Lodge here this night,
and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me:
and the princes of Moab abode with
Balaam.
“
Spend the night here,”
Balaam replied, “
and I will give you the answer that the LORD speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with
Balaam.
And God came unto
Balaam,
and said, What men are these with thee?
Then God came to
Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?”
And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message:
Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now,
curse me them;
peradventure I shall be able to overcome them,
and drive them out.
‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt,
and they cover the face of the land. Now come
and put a
curse on them for me. Perhaps I may be able to fight against them
and drive them away.’”
And God said unto
Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not
curse the people: for they are blessed.
But God said to
Balaam, “Do not go with them. You are not to
curse this people, for they are blessed.”
And Balaam rose up in the morning,
and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
So
Balaam got up the next morning
and said to Balak’s princes, “Go back to your homeland, because the LORD has refused to let me go with you.”
And the princes of Moab rose up,
and they went unto Balak,
and said,
Balaam refuseth to come with us.
And the princes of Moab arose, returned to Balak,
and said, “
Balaam refused to come with us.”
And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
Then Balak sent other princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first messengers.
And they came to
Balaam,
and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
They came to
Balaam and said, “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me,
For I will promote thee unto very great honour,
and I will do
whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee,
curse me this people.
for I will honor you richly
and do whatever you say. So please come
and put a
curse on this people for me!’”
And Balaam answered
and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver
and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.
But
Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “If Balak were to give me his house full of silver
and gold, I could not do anything small or great to go beyond the command of the LORD my God.
And God came unto
Balaam at night,
and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up,
and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
That night God came to
Balaam and said, “Since these men have come to
summon you, get up
and go with them, but you must only do what I tell you.”
And Balaam rose up in the morning,
and saddled his
ass,
and went with the princes of Moab.
And God’s anger was
kindled because he went:
and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an
adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his
ass,
and his two servants were with him.
Then God’s anger was
kindled because
Balaam was going along,
and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to
oppose him.
Balaam was riding his
donkey,
and his two servants were with him.
And the
ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way,
and his sword drawn in his hand:
and the
ass turned aside out of the way,
and went into the field:
and Balaam smote the
ass, to turn her into the way.
When the
donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the path
and went into a field. So
Balaam beat her to return her to the path.
But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow passage between two vineyards, with walls on either side.
And when the
ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall,
and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall:
and he
smote her again.
And the
donkey saw the angel of the LORD
and pressed herself against the wall,
crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her once again.
And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
And the angel of the LORD moved on
ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or left.
When the
donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under
Balaam,
and he became
furious and beat her with his staff.
And the LORD opened the mouth of the
ass,
and she said unto
Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast
smitten me these three times?
Then the LORD opened the
donkey’s mouth,
and she said to
Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”
And Balaam said unto the
ass, Because thou hast
mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
Balaam answered the
donkey, “You have made a
fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!”
And the
ass said unto
Balaam, Am not I thine
ass, upon which thou hast
ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever
wont to do so unto thee?
And he said,
Nay.
But the
donkey said to
Balaam, “Am I not the
donkey you have
ridden all your life until
today? Have I ever treated you this way before?” “No,” he replied.
Then the LORD opened the eyes of
Balaam,
and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way,
and his sword drawn in his hand:
and he bowed down his head,
and fell flat on his face.
Then the LORD opened
Balaam’s eyes,
and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand.
And Balaam bowed low
and fell facedown.
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou
smitten thine
ass these three times? behold, I went out to
withstand thee, because thy way is
perverse before me:
The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your
donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to
oppose you, because your way is
perverse before me.
And the
ass saw me,
and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee,
and saved her alive.
The
donkey saw me
and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away, then by now I would surely have killed you
and let her live.”
And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have
sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
“I have
sinned,”
Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “for I did not
realize that you were standing in the road to
confront me.
And now, if this is displeasing in your sight, I will go back home.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So
Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
But the angel of the LORD said to
Balaam, “Go with the men, but you are to speak only what I tell you.” So
Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
And when Balak heard that
Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of
Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
When Balak heard that
Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the
Moabite city on the
Arnon border, at the edge of his territory.
And Balak said unto
Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
And he said to
Balaam, “Did I not send you an
urgent summons? Why did you not come to me? Am I really not able to richly reward you?”
And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
“See, I have come to you,”
Balaam replied, “but can I say just anything? I must speak only the word that God puts in my mouth.”
And Balaam went with Balak,
and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.
So
Balaam accompanied Balak,
and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.
And Balak offered oxen
and sheep,
and sent to
Balaam,
and to the princes that were with him.
Balak sacrificed cattle
and sheep,
and he gave portions to
Balaam and the princes who were with him.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that Balak took
Balaam,
and brought him up into the high places of
Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
The next morning, Balak took
Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-
baal. From there he could see the outskirts of the camp of the people.
And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars,
and prepare me here seven oxen
and seven rams.
Then
Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me seven altars here,
and prepare for me seven bulls
and seven rams.”
And Balak did as
Balaam had spoken;
and Balak
and Balaam offered on every altar a
bullock and a ram.
And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering,
and I will go:
peradventure the LORD will come to meet me:
and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee.
And he went to an high place.
“Stay here by your burnt offering while I am gone,”
Balaam said to Balak. “Perhaps the LORD will meet with me.
And whatever He reveals to me, I will tell you.” So
Balaam went off to a barren height,
And God met
Balaam:
and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars,
and I have offered upon every altar a
bullock and a ram.
and God met with him. “I have set up seven altars,”
Balaam said, “
and on each altar I have offered a bull
and a ram.”
And the LORD put a word in
Balaam’s mouth,
and said, Return unto Balak,
and thus thou shalt speak.
Then the LORD put a message in
Balaam’s mouth, saying, “Return to Balak
and give him this message.”
And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.
So he returned to Balak, who was standing there beside his burnt offering, with all the princes of Moab.
And he took up his parable,
and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from
Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come,
curse me Jacob,
and come,
defy Israel.
And Balaam lifted up an
oracle, saying: “Balak brought me from
Aram, the king of Moab from the mountains of the east. ‘Come,’ he said, ‘put a
curse on Jacob for me; come
and denounce Israel!’
For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
For I see them from
atop the rocky cliffs,
and I watch them from the hills. Behold, a people dwelling apart, not
reckoning themselves among the nations.
Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!
Who can count the dust of Jacob or number even a fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous; let my end be like theirs!”
And Balak said unto
Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to
curse mine enemies,
and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.
Then Balak said to
Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you here to
curse my enemies,
and behold, you have only blessed them!”
And he answered
and said, Must I not take
heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?
But
Balaam replied, “Should I not speak exactly what the LORD puts in my mouth?”
And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them,
and shalt not see them all:
and curse me them from thence.
Then Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place where you can see them. You will only see the outskirts of their camp—not all of them.
And from there,
curse them for me.”
And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of
Pisgah,
and built seven altars,
and offered a
bullock and a ram on every altar.
So Balak took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of
Pisgah, where he built seven altars
and offered a bull
and a ram on each altar.
And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD
yonder.
Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt offering while I meet the LORD over there.”
And the LORD met
Balaam,
and put a word in his mouth,
and said, Go again unto Balak,
and say thus.
And the LORD met with
Balaam and put a message in his mouth, saying, “Return to Balak
and speak what I tell you.”
And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken?
So he returned to Balak, who was standing there by his burnt offering with the princes of Moab. “What did the LORD say?” Balak asked.
And he took up his parable,
and said, Rise up, Balak,
and hear;
hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
Then
Balaam lifted up an
oracle, saying: “Arise, O Balak,
and listen; give ear to me, O son of Zippor.
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should
repent: hath he said,
and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken,
and shall he not make it good?
God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak
and not act? Does He promise
and not
fulfill?
Behold, I have received commandment to
bless:
and he hath blessed;
and I cannot reverse it.
I have indeed received a command to
bless; He has blessed,
and I cannot change it.
He hath not
beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen
perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him,
and the
shout of a king is among them.
He considers no
disaster for Jacob; He sees no trouble for Israel. The LORD their God is with them,
and the
shout of the King is among them.
Surely there is no
enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any
divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob
and of Israel, What hath God wrought!
For there is no
spell against Jacob
and no
divination against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob
and Israel, ‘What great things God has done!’
Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.
Behold, the people rise like a
lioness; they
rouse themselves like a lion, not resting until they
devour their prey
and drink the blood of the slain.”
Now Balak said to
Balaam, “Then neither
curse them at all nor
bless them at all!”
But
Balaam answered
and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?
But
Balaam replied, “Did I not tell you that whatever the LORD says, I must do?”
And Balak said unto
Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place;
peradventure it will please God that thou mayest
curse me them from thence.
“Please come,” said Balak, “I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you
curse them for me from there.”
And Balak brought
Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon.
And Balak took
Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the wasteland.
And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars,
and prepare me here seven bullocks
and seven rams.
Then
Balaam said, “Build for me seven altars here,
and prepare for me seven bulls
and seven rams.”
And Balak did as
Balaam had said,
and offered a
bullock and a ram on every altar.
So Balak did as
Balaam had
instructed,
and he offered a bull
and a ram on each altar.
And when
Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to
bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.
And when
Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to
bless Israel, he did not resort to
sorcery as on previous occasions, but he turned his face toward the wilderness.
And Balaam lifted up his eyes,
and he saw Israel
abiding in his tents according to their tribes;
and the spirit of God came upon him.
When
Balaam looked up
and saw Israel
encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him,
And he took up his parable,
and said,
Balaam the son of Beor hath said,
and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
and he lifted up an
oracle, saying: “This is the prophecy of
Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open,
How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!
How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!
As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign
aloes which the LORD hath planted,
and as
cedar trees beside the waters.
They spread out like palm groves, like gardens beside a stream, like
aloes the LORD has planted, like cedars beside the waters.
He shall pour the water out of his buckets,
and his seed shall be in many waters,
and his king shall be higher than
Agag,
and his kingdom shall be
exalted.
Water will flow from his buckets,
and his seed will have abundant water. His king will be greater than
Agag,
and his kingdom will be
exalted.
God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an
unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies,
and shall break their bones,
and pierce them through with his arrows.
God brought him out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox, to
devour hostile nations
and crush their bones, to
pierce them with arrows.
He
couched, he lay down as a lion,
and as a great lion: who shall
stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee,
and cursed is he that curseth thee.
And Balak’s anger was
kindled against
Balaam,
and he
smote his hands together:
and Balak said unto
Balaam, I called thee to
curse mine enemies,
and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.
Then Balak’s anger burned against
Balaam,
and he struck his hands together
and said to
Balaam, “I summoned you to
curse my enemies, but behold, you have
persisted in blessing them these three times.
And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying,
Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not already tell the messengers you sent me
If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?
that even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver
and gold, I could not do anything of my own
accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD? I will speak whatever the LORD says.
And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore,
and I will
advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.
Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me
warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.”
And he took up his parable,
and said,
Balaam the son of Beor hath said,
and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
Then
Balaam lifted up an
oracle, saying, “This is the prophecy of
Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open,
He hath said, which heard the words of God,
and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the
Almighty, falling into a
trance, but having his eyes open:
the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the
Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open:
I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not
nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob,
and a
Sceptre shall rise out of Israel,
and shall
smite the corners of Moab,
and destroy all the children of
Sheth.
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come forth from Jacob,
and a
scepter will arise from Israel. He will
crush the skulls of Moab
and strike down all the sons of
Sheth.
And Edom shall be a possession,
Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies;
and Israel shall do
valiantly.
Edom will become a possession, as will
Seir, his enemy; but Israel will perform with
valor.
Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.”
