Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
“Should this stream of words go unanswered and such a speaker be
vindicated?
And Job answered and said,
Then Job answered:
I am as one
mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is
laughed to
scorn.

And
Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite
answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and
durst not
shew you mine opinion.
So
Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was
timid and afraid to tell you what I know.
Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that
convinced Job, or that
answered his words:
I paid you full attention. But no one proved Job wrong; not one of you
rebutted his arguments.
They were
amazed, they
answered no more: they left off speaking.
Job’s friends are dismayed, with no more to say; words have escaped them.
When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply?
Then the LORD
answered Job out of the
whirlwind, and said,

They
cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the LORD, but he
answered them not.
They
cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but He did not answer.
Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
Save me from the mouth of the lion; at the horns of the wild oxen You have answered me!
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.
Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I
answered thee in the secret place of
thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah.
Selah.
You called out in distress, and I
rescued you; I
answered you from the cloud of
thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Selah Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.
Moses and Aaron were among His priests; Samuel was among those who called on His name. They called to the LORD and He answered.
Thou
answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou
wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest
vengeance of their inventions.
O LORD our God, You
answered them. You were a
forgiving God to them, yet an
avenger of their misdeeds.
I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.
In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered and set me free.
I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
I will give You
thanks, for You have
answered me, and You have become my salvation.
I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes.
I recounted my ways, and You answered me; teach me Your statutes.
In my distress I
cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.
In my distress I
cried to the LORD, and He
answered me.
In the day when I
cried thou
answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.
On the day I called, You
answered me; You
emboldened me and strengthened my soul.
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he
answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly
desolate,
Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left unoccupied and the land is
desolate and
ravaged,
And, behold, here cometh a
chariot of men, with a couple of
horsemen. And he
answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the
graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
Look, here come the riders,
horsemen in pairs.” And one
answered, saying: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon! All the images of her gods lie
shattered on the ground!”
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,”
answered Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
So I will choose their punishment and I will bring terror upon them, because I called and no one
answered, I spoke and no one
listened. But they did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did not delight.”
I appointed
watchmen over you and said, ‘
Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.’ But they
answered, ‘We will not
listen!’
And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;
And now, because you have done all these things, declares the LORD, and because I have spoken to you again and again but you would not
listen, and I have called to you but you would not answer,
And the LORD saith, Because they have
forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
And the LORD
answered, “It is because they have
forsaken My law, which I set before them; they have not walked in it or obeyed My voice.
That I may perform the oath which I have
sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then
answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD.
This was in order to establish the oath I
swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is to this day.” “
Amen, LORD,” I
answered.
Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to
Zedekiah:
But Jeremiah
answered, “You are to tell
Zedekiah that
Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
This is what each man is to say to his friend and to his brother: ‘What has the LORD answered?’ or ‘What has the LORD spoken?’
Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath the LORD answered thee? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
Thus you are to say to the prophet: ‘What has the LORD answered you?’ and ‘What has the LORD spoken?’
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.
Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the
disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have not
answered.’”
Then
Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.
“It was at his
dictation,”
Baruch replied. “He recited all these words to me and I wrote them in ink on the
scroll.”
Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah,
Then I answered them, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
So I answered them, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord GOD,” I replied, “only You know.”
Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will
shew the interpretation.
Then the astrologers
answered the king in
Aramaic, “O king, may you live
forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”
The king
answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a
dunghill.
The king replied to the astrologers, “My word is final: If you do not tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will be cut into pieces and your houses will be reduced to
rubble.
They
answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will
shew the interpretation of it.
They answered a second time, “Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will give the interpretation.”
The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
The king replied, “I know for sure that you are
stalling for time, because you see that my word is final.
The Chaldeans
answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can
shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any
magician, or
astrologer, or
Chaldean.
The astrologers
answered the king, “No one on earth can do what the king requests! No king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any
magician,
enchanter, or
astrologer.
Then Daniel
answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to
slay the wise men of Babylon:
When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to
execute the wise men of Babylon, Daniel replied with
discretion and
tact.
He
answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Why is the decree so
hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
“Why is the decree from the king so harsh?” he asked. At this time Arioch explained the situation to Daniel.
Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
and declared: “Blessed be the name of God
forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him.
The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?
The king
responded to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to tell me what I saw in the dream, as well as its interpretation?”
Daniel
answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers,
shew unto the king;
Daniel
answered the king, “No wise man,
enchanter, medium, or
magician can explain to the king the
mystery of which he inquires.
The king
answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a
revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldst
reveal this secret.
The king said to Daniel, “Your God is truly the God of gods and Lord of kings, the
Revealer of Mysteries, since you were able to
reveal this
mystery.”
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego,
answered and said to the king, O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
Then
Nebuchadnezzar the king was
astonied, and rose up in
haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They
answered and said unto the king, True, O king.
Suddenly King
Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in
amazement and asked his advisers, “Did we not throw three men, firmly bound, into the fire?” “Certainly, O king,” they replied.
He
answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no
hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
“Look!” he
exclaimed. “I see four men, unbound and
unharmed, walking around in the fire—and the fourth looks like a son of the gods!”
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was
astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar
answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that
hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
For a time, Daniel, who was also known as Belteshazzar, was
perplexed, and his thoughts
alarmed him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation
alarm you.” “My lord,” replied Belteshazzar, “may the dream apply to those who
hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!
Then Daniel
answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to
thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
In
response, Daniel said to the king, “You may keep your gifts for
yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the inscription for the king and
interpret it for him.
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be
repealed.”
Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
Then they told the king, “Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, shows no regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed. He still makes his petition three times a day.”
Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied
therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
Then
answered Amos, and said to
Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an
herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
“I was not a prophet,”
Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a
herdsman and a tender of
sycamore-fig trees.
And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.
“
Pick me up,” he
answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to
blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He
answered me. From the
belly of
Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what
Balaam the son of Beor
answered him from
Shittim unto
Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.
My people, remember what Balak king of Moab counseled and what
Balaam son of Beor
answered. Remember your journey from
Shittim to
Gilgal, so that you may acknowledge the righteousness of the LORD.’”
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Then the LORD
answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly
inscribe it on tablets, so that a
herald may run with it.
If one bear holy flesh in the
skirt of his garment, and with his
skirt do touch bread, or
pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests
answered and said, No.
If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread,
stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that
item become holy?’” “No,” replied the priests.
Then said
Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests
answered and said, It shall be unclean.
Then
answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
Then
Haggai replied, “So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is
defiled.
And the man that stood among the
myrtle trees
answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and
fro through the earth.
Then the man standing among the
myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to
patrol the earth.”
And they
answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the
myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and
fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
And the riders
answered the angel of the LORD who was standing among the
myrtle trees, “We have
patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is at rest and
tranquil.”
Then the angel of the LORD
answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long
wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had
indignation these
threescore and ten years?
Then the angel of the LORD said, “How long, O LORD of Hosts, will You
withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been
angry these seventy years?”
And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.
So the LORD spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who was speaking with me.
And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he told me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
And he
answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the
filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will
clothe thee with change of
raiment.
So the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off his
filthy clothes!” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will
clothe you with splendid robes.”
So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
“What are these, my lord?” I asked the angel who was speaking with me.
Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered.
Then he
answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto
Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts.
Then
answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the
candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
Then I asked the angel, “What are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand?”
And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
And I questioned him further, “What are the two olive branches beside the two gold pipes from which the golden oil pours?”
And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what these are?” he inquired. “No, my lord,” I replied.
And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
“What do you see?” asked the angel. “I see a flying
scroll,” I replied, “twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.”
Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?
So I inquired of the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these, my lord?”
And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.
And the angel told me, “These are the four spirits of heaven, going forth from their station before the Lord of all the earth.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
The
centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be
healed.
The
centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be
healed.
And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him,
Yea, Lord.
After Jesus had entered the house, the blind men came to Him. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” He asked. “
Yes, Lord,” they
answered.
Jesus
answered and said unto them, Go and
shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
At that time Jesus
answered and said, I
thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast
hid these things from the wise and
prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
Then certain of the
scribes and of the
Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Then some of the
scribes and
Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
But he
answered and said unto them, An evil and
adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet
Jonas:
Jesus replied, “A wicked and
adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet
Jonah.
