And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and
smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces and routed
Chedorlaomer’s
army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And it came to pass at that time, that
Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
At that time
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his
army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
Thus they made a covenant at Beer-
sheba: then
Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.
After they had made the covenant at
Beersheba,
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his
army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
Then
Abimelech went to him from
Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his
army.
Later,
Abimelech came to Isaac from
Gerar, with Ahuzzath his
adviser and Phicol the commander of his
army.
And I will
harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.
And I will
harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue them. But I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his
army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” So this is what the Israelites did.
And he made ready his
chariot, and took his people with him:
So Pharaoh prepared his
chariot and took his
army with him.
But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and
chariots of Pharaoh, and his
horsemen, and his
army, and overtook them
encamping by the sea, beside
Pi-hahiroth, before
Baal-zephon.
The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and
chariots,
horsemen and troops—pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near
Pi-hahiroth, opposite
Baal-zephon.
And I, behold, I will
harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his
chariots, and upon his
horsemen.
And I will
harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. Then I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his
army and
chariots and
horsemen.
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the
pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
At morning watch, however, the LORD looked down on the
army of the Egyptians from the
pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion.
And the waters returned, and covered the
chariots, and the
horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
The waters flowed back and covered the
chariots and
horsemen—the entire
army of Pharaoh that had
chased the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.
Pharaoh’s
chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are
drowned in the Red sea.
Pharaoh’s
chariots and
army He has cast into the sea; the finest of his officers are
drowned in the Red Sea.
And Joshua
discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
So Joshua
overwhelmed Amalek and his
army with the sword.

From the sons of

army,
Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.
From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.
Of the children of
Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
And from the sons of
Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the
army,
Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

From the sons of
Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the
army,
So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;
So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.
And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And
Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
But
Edom insisted, “You may not pass through.” And they came out to
confront the Israelites with a large
army and a strong hand.
And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole
army and went out to
confront Israel in the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.
And they turned and went up by the way of
Bashan: and
Og the king of
Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
Then they turned and went up the road to
Bashan, and
Og king of
Bashan and his whole
army came out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
So they
smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
So they struck down
Og, along with his sons and his whole
army, until no
remnant was left. And they took possession of his land.
Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, throughout their fathers’ house, all that are able to go to war in Israel.
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
And Moses was
wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
But Moses was
angry with the officers of the
army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.
And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:
Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses
Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz.
And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we
smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army.
Then we turned, and went up the way to
Bashan: and
Og the king of
Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
Then we turned and went up the road to
Bashan, and
Og king of
Bashan and his whole
army came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.
So the LORD our God delivered into our hands
Og also, the king of
Bashan, and all his people: and we
smote him until none was left to him remaining.
So the LORD our God also delivered
Og king of
Bashan and his whole
army into our hands. We struck them down until no
survivor was left.
And what he did unto the
army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their
chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day;
what He did to the Egyptian
army and horses and
chariots when He made the waters of the Red Sea
engulf them as they pursued you, and how He destroyed them completely, even to this day;
When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and
chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses,
chariots, and an
army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
And it shall be, when ye are come
nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man
dedicate it.
Furthermore, the officers are to address the
army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man
dedicate it.
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and
fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart
faint as well as his heart.
Then the officers shall speak further to the
army, saying, “Is any man afraid or
fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not
melt like his own.”
And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
When the officers have finished addressing the
army, they are to
appoint commanders to lead it.
And he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?
“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”
And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy
shoe from off thy foot; for the place
whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
The Commander of the LORD’s
army replied, “Take off your
sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to
Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of
Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take the whole
army with you, and go up and attack
Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of
Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole
army set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at night
So Joshua ascended from
Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
So Joshua and his whole
army, including all the mighty men of
valor, came from
Gilgal.
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
The whole
army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one
dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the waters of
Merom, Joshua and his whole
army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
And I will draw unto thee to the river
Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s
army, with his
chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
And I will draw out Sisera the commander of Jabin’s
army, his
chariots, and his troops to the River
Kishon, and I will deliver him into your hand.’”
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all his
chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before
Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his
chariot, and fled away on his feet.
And in front of him the LORD routed with the sword Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his
army. Sisera abandoned his
chariot and fled on foot.
But
Barak pursued after the
chariots, and after the host, unto
Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
Then
Barak pursued the
chariots and
army as far as
Harosheth-hagoyim, and the whole
army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a single man was left.
And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite
army fled, crying out as they ran.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The
army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
But the leaders of Succoth asked, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?”
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their
army of about fifteen thousand men—all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand
swordsmen had already fallen.
And
Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and
smote the host: for the host was secure.
And
Gideon went up by way of the
caravan route east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and he attacked their
army, taking them by surprise.
And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of
Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and
discomfited all the host.
When Zebah and Zalmunna fled,
Gideon pursued and captured these two kings of
Midian, routing their entire
army.
And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove
Abimelech. And he said to
Abimelech, Increase thine
army, and come out.
If only this people were under my authority, I would remove
Abimelech; I would say to him, ‘Muster your
army and come out!’”
And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to
fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
We will take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the
army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to
punish them for the
atrocity they have committed in Israel.”
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in
array in the place where they put themselves in
array the first day.
But the
Israelite army took courage and again took their battle positions in the same place where they had
arrayed themselves on the first day.
And the Philistines put themselves in
array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was
smitten before the Philistines: and they
slew of the
army in the field about four thousand men.
The Philistines
arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the
army, and came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and
dirt on his head.
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that came out of the
army, and I fled to day out of the
army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
And when they
forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
But they
forgot the LORD their God, and He sold them into the hand of Sisera the commander of the
army of Hazor, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.
And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of
Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was
Abner, the son of
Ner, Saul’s uncle.
His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of
Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of his
army was
Abner, the son of Saul’s uncle
Ner.
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as
Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the
trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and
shouted for the battle.
So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as
Jesse had
instructed him. He reached the camp as the
army was marching out to its position and
shouting the battle cry.
For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in
array,
army against
army.
And Israel and the Philistines
arrayed in formation against each other.
And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the
army, and came and
saluted his brethren.
Then David left his supplies in the care of the
quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.
And it came to pass, when the
Philistine arose, and came and drew
nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the
army to meet the
Philistine.
As the
Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the
army, “
Abner, whose son is this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place where Saul lay, and
Abner the son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round about him.
Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his
army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly
trembled.
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to
morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. And the LORD will deliver the
army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.
And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they
forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
But
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to
Mahanaim;
Meanwhile,
Abner son of
Ner, the commander of Saul’s
army, took Saul’s son
Ish-bosheth, moved him to
Mahanaim,
When Toi king of
Hamath heard that David had
smitten all the host of Hadadezer,
When King Toi of
Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire
army of Hadadezer,
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and
Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;
Joab son of Zeruiah was over the
army;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;
And when David heard of it, he sent
Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
On hearing this, David sent
Joab and the entire
army of mighty men.
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
Hadadezer sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, and they came to Helam with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David
slew the men of seven hundred
chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand
horsemen, and
smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.
And it came to pass, after the year was
expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of
Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried still at Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out
Joab and his servants with the whole
army of Israel. They destroyed the
Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
So David’s
army marched into the field to
engage Israel in the battle, which took place in the forest of Ephraim.
And say ye to
Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of
Joab.
And say to
Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood? May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if from this time you are not the commander of my
army in place of
Joab!’”
Now
Joab was over all the host of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites:
Now
Joab was over the whole
army of Israel; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites;
For by thee I have run through a
troop: by my God have I
leaped over a wall.
For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
For the king said to
Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
So the king said to
Joab the commander of his
army, who was with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”
Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against
Joab, and against the captains of the host. And
Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against
Joab and against the commanders of the
army. So
Joab and the commanders of the
army departed from the presence of the king to count the troops of Israel.
And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and
Abiathar the priest, and
Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the king, as well as
Abiathar the priest and
Joab the commander of the
army. But he did not
invite your servant Solomon.
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
For
today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the
army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head, for without the knowledge of my father David he struck down two men more righteous and better than he when he put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s
army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s
army.
And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and
Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of
Abiathar.
And the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada in
Joab’s place over the
army, and he appointed
Zadok the priest in
Abiathar’s place.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host: and
Zadok and
Abiathar were the priests:
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in charge of the
army;
Zadok and
Abiathar were priests;
For it came to pass, when David was in
Edom, and
Joab the captain of the host was gone up to
bury the slain, after he had
smitten every male in
Edom;
Earlier, when David was in
Edom,
Joab the commander of the
army had gone to
bury the dead and had struck down every male in
Edom.
And when
Hadad heard in Egypt that David
slept with his fathers, and that
Joab the captain of the host was dead,
Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.
When
Hadad heard in Egypt that David had rested with his fathers and that
Joab, the commander of the
army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”
And the people that were
encamped heard say, Zimri hath
conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.
and the people in the camp heard that Zimri had not only
conspired but had also struck down the king. So there in the camp that very day, all Israel proclaimed Omri, the commander of the
army, king over Israel.
