And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
and who has shown me favor before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. And because the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, I took courage and gathered the leaders of Israel to return with me.
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of
Ahava, that we might
afflict ourselves
before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.
And there by the
Ahava Canal I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves
before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.
Watch ye, and keep them, until ye
weigh them
before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.
Guard them carefully until you
weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the LORD in Jerusalem
before the leading priests, Levites, and heads of the
Israelite families.”
O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we remain this day as a
remnant. Here we are
before You in our guilt, though because of it no one can stand
before You.”
Now when
Ezra had prayed, and when he had
confessed,
weeping and casting himself down
before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people
wept very
sore.
While
Ezra prayed and made this confession,
weeping and falling facedown
before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites—men, women, and children—gathered around him, and the people
wept bitterly as well.
Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that
tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
So now let us make a covenant
before our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who
tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.
Then
Ezra rose up from
before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he
mourned because of the
transgression of them that had been carried away.
Then
Ezra withdrew from
before the house of God and walked to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. And while he stayed there, he
ate no food and
drank no water, because he was
mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and
wept, and
mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed
before the God of heaven,
When I heard these words, I sat down and
wept. I
mourned for days, fasting and praying
before the God of heaven.
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray
before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray
before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
And it came to pass in the month
Nisan, in the
twentieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that wine was
before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been
beforetime sad in his presence.
Now in the month of
Nisan, in the
twentieth year of King
Artaxerxes, when wine was set
before him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had never been
sad in his presence,
And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even
before the
dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
So I went out at night through the Valley Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung Gate, and I
inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and the gates that had been destroyed by fire.
And he spake
before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they
fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the
rubbish which are burned?
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of
rubble?”
And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be
blotted out from
before thee: for they have
provoked thee to anger
before the builders.
Do not cover up their iniquity or let their sin be
blotted out from Your sight, for they have
provoked the builders.
And our
adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and
slay them, and cause the work to cease.
And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”
But the former governors that had been
before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver;
yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
The governors
before me had
heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine
plus forty shekels of silver. Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.
Also they reported his good deeds
before me, and uttered my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
Moreover, these nobles kept reporting to me
Tobiah’s good deeds, and they relayed my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to
intimidate me.
And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was
before the water gate; and they spake unto
Ezra the
scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.
At that time all the people gathered together in the square
before the Water Gate, and they asked
Ezra the
scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel.
And
Ezra the priest brought the law
before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.
On the first day of the seventh month,
Ezra the priest brought the Law
before the assembly of men and women and all who could
listen and understand.
And he read therein
before the street that was
before the water gate from the morning until
midday,
before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were
attentive unto the book of the law.
So
Ezra read it
aloud from
daybreak until
noon as he faced the square
before the Water Gate, in front of the men and women and those who could understand. And all the people
listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
And foundest his heart faithful
before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Amorites, and the
Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:
You found his heart faithful
before You, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the
Canaanites and
Hittites, of the
Amorites and
Perizzites, of the Jebusites and Girgashites— to give it to his descendants. You have kept Your promise, because You are righteous.
And thou
didst divide the sea
before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.
You divided the sea
before them, and they crossed through it on dry ground. You
hurled their pursuers into the depths like a stone into
raging waters.
So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst
before them the inhabitants of the land, the
Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.
So their descendants went in and possessed the land; You subdued
before them the
Canaanites dwelling in the land. You delivered into their hands the kings and peoples of the land, to do with them as they wished.
But after they had rest, they did evil again
before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and
cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times
didst thou deliver them according to thy
mercies;
But as soon as they had rest, they again did evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to the hands of their enemies, who had dominion over them. When they
cried out to You again, You heard from heaven, and You delivered them many times in Your
compassion.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
So now, our God, the great and mighty and
awesome God who keeps His
gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the
hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until
today.
For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.
For even while they were in their kingdom, with the abundant goodness that You had given them, and in the
spacious and fertile land that You had set
before them, they would not serve You or turn from their wicked ways.
And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and
Ezra the
scribe before them.
and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—with the musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God.
Ezra the
scribe led the
procession.
And
before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto
Tobiah:
Now
before this, Eliashib the priest, a relative of
Tobiah, had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God
And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.
When the evening shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem, just before the Sabbath, I ordered that the gates be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no load could enter on the Sabbath day.
And I
contended with them, and
cursed them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked off their hair, and made them
swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for
yourselves.
I
rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath
before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for
yourselves!
In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
In the third year of his reign,
Xerxes held a feast for all his officials and servants. The military leaders of Persia and Media were there, along with the nobles and princes of the provinces.
To bring Vashti the queen
before the king with the crown royal, to
shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
to bring Queen Vashti before him, wearing her royal crown, to display her beauty to the people and officials. For she was beautiful to behold.
And Memucan answered
before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus.
And in the presence of the king and his princes, Memucan replied, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king, but all the princes and the peoples in all the provinces of King
Xerxes.
For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall
despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king
Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in
before him, but she came not.
For the conduct of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to
despise their husbands and say, ‘King
Xerxes ordered Queen Vashti to be brought
before him, but she did not come.’
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more
before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a woman better than she.
And
Mordecai walked every day
before the court of the women’s house, to know how
Esther did, and what should become of her.
And every day
Mordecai would walk back and forth in front of the court of the
harem to learn about
Esther’s
welfare and what was happening to her.
Now when every
maid’s turn was come to go in to king
Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of
myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the
purifying of the women;)
In the twelve months
before her turn to go to King
Xerxes, the
harem regulation required each young woman to receive beauty treatments with oil of
myrrh for six months, and then with perfumes and cosmetics for another six months.
And when
inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both
hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles
before the king.
After the report had been investigated and
verified, both officials were
hanged on the
gallows. And all this was recorded in the Book of the Chronicles in the presence of the king.
In the first month, that is, the month
Nisan, in the
twelfth year of king
Ahasuerus, they cast
Pur, that is, the lot,
before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the
twelfth month, that is, the month
Adar.
In the
twelfth year of King
Xerxes, in the first month, the month of
Nisan, the
Pur (that is, the lot) was cast
before Haman to determine a day and month. And the lot fell on the
twelfth month, the month of
Adar.
And came even
before the king’s gate: for none might enter into the king’s gate clothed with
sackcloth.
But he went only as far as the king’s gate, because the law prohibited
anyone wearing
sackcloth from entering that gate.
So Hatach went forth to
Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was
before the king’s gate.
So Hathach went out to
Mordecai in the city square in front of the king’s gate,
Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at
Shushan to destroy them, to
shew it unto
Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make
supplication unto him, and to make request
before him for her people.
Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree issued in
Susa for the destruction of the Jews, to show and explain to
Esther,
urging her to approach the king,
implore his favor, and
plead before him for her people.
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear
before the king for the past thirty days.”
On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.
That night sleep escaped the king; so he ordered the Book of Records, the Chronicles, to be brought in and read to him.
And let this
apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may
array the man
withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on
horseback through the street of the city, and
proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
Let the
robe and the horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them
array the man the king wants to honor and
parade him on the horse through the city square,
proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!’”
Then took
Haman the
apparel and the horse, and
arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on
horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed
before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
So
Haman took the
robe and the horse,
arrayed Mordecai, and
paraded him through the city square, crying out
before him, “This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!”
And
Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had
befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If
Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews,
before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall
before him.
Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since
Mordecai,
before whom your
downfall has begun, is Jewish, you will not prevail against him—for surely you will fall
before him.”
Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the
banquet of wine; and
Haman was fallen upon the bed
whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also
before me in the house? As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the
banquet hall,
Haman was falling on the
couch where
Esther was
reclining. The king
exclaimed, “Would he actually
assault the queen while I am in the palace?” As soon as the words had left the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said
before the king, Behold also, the
gallows fifty cubits high, which
Haman had made for
Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of
Haman. Then the king said,
Hang him
thereon.
Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said: “There is a
gallows fifty cubits high at
Haman’s house. He had it built for
Mordecai, who gave the report that saved the king.” “
Hang him on it!” declared the king.
On that day did the king
Ahasuerus give the house of
Haman the Jews’ enemy unto
Esther the queen. And
Mordecai came
before the king; for
Esther had told what he was unto her.
And
Esther spake yet again
before the king, and fell down at his feet, and
besought him with tears to put away the mischief of
Haman the Agagite, and his
device that he had devised against the Jews.
And once again,
Esther addressed the king. She fell at his feet
weeping and
begged him to
revoke the evil scheme of
Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.
Then the king held out the golden
sceptre toward
Esther. So
Esther arose, and stood
before the king,
The king extended the gold
scepter toward
Esther, and she arose and stood
before the king.
And said, If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right
before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by
Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king’s provinces:
“If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if I have found favor in his sight, and the matter seems proper to the king, and I am pleasing in his sight, may an order be written to
revoke the letters that the scheming
Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.
On that day the number of those that were slain in
Shushan the palace was brought
before the king.
On that day the number of those killed in the citadel of
Susa was reported to the king,
But when
Esther came
before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked
device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
But when it came
before the king, he commanded by letter that the wicked scheme which
Haman had devised against the Jews should come back upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves
before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them.
One day the sons of God came to present themselves
before the LORD, and
Satan also came with them.
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves
before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them to present himself
before the LORD.
On another day the sons of God came to present themselves
before the LORD, and
Satan also came with them to present himself
before Him.
For my
sighing cometh
before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.
I
sigh when food is put
before me, and my groans pour out like water.
Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
It stood still, but I could not
discern the form thereof: an image was
before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
It stood still, but I could not
discern its appearance; a form
loomed before my eyes, and I heard a
whispering voice:
How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are
crushed before the
moth?
how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who can be
crushed like a
moth!
I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth
before any other
herb.
While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden.
He is a well-watered plant in the
sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden.
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
“
Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a
mortal be righteous
before God?
Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
before I go—never to return— to a land of darkness and
gloom,
Surely I would speak to the
Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.
Yet I desire to speak to the
Almighty and
argue my case
before God.
Though he
slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways
before him.
Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.
He also shall be my salvation: for an
hypocrite shall not come
before him.
Moreover, this will be my salvation, for no godless man can appear before Him.
And
dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You?
Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer
before God.
But you even undermine the fear of God and hinder
meditation before Him.
Art thou the first man that was born? or
wast thou made
before the hills?
Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
It will be paid in full
before his time, and his branch will not
flourish.
They that come after him shall be
astonied at his day, as they that went
before were
affrighted.
Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
Their descendants are established around them, and their offspring before their eyes.
They are as
stubble before the wind, and as
chaff that the storm carrieth away.
Are they like straw
before the wind, like
chaff swept away by a storm?
The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
The clods of the valley are sweet to him;
everyone follows behind him, and those
before him are without number.
Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was
overflown with a flood:
They were
snatched away
before their time, and their foundations were swept away by a flood.
I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
I would
plead my case
before Him and fill my mouth with arguments.
Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.
How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?
Hell is naked
before him, and destruction hath no covering.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and
afflicted me, they have also let loose the
bridle before me.
Because God has unstrung my bow and
afflicted me, they have cast off restraint in my presence.
Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to
ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
You
snatch me up into the wind and drive me
before it; You
toss me about in the storm.
If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.
Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s
stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.
He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have
sinned, and
perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
Then he sings
before men with these words: ‘I have
sinned and
perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved.
So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the
afflicted.
They caused the cry of the poor to come
before Him, and He heard the outcry of the
afflicted.
Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
How much less, then, when you say that you do not see Him, that your case is before Him and you must wait for Him,
None is so fierce that
dare stir him up: who then is able to stand
before me?
No one is so fierce as to
rouse Leviathan. Then who is able to stand against Me?
In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
Strength resides in his neck, and dismay leaps before him.
When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they
purify themselves.
And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.
After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his prosperity and doubled his former possessions.
Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance
before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they
bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an
earring of gold.
All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and
dined with him in his house. They
consoled him and comforted him over all the
adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at
daybreak I lay my
plea before You and wait in expectation.
Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make straight Your way before me.
When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.
When my enemies retreat, they
stumble and perish
before You.
I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
I have set the LORD always
before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be
shaken.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and
cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came
before him, even into his ears.
In my distress I called upon the LORD; I
cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for His help reached His ears.
At the brightness that was
before him his thick clouds passed,
hail stones and coals of fire.
From the brightness of His presence His clouds advanced— hailstones and coals of fire.
