For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order.
It was because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God
burst forth in anger against us. For we did not
consult Him about the proper order.”

And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for
burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good. Look, I will give the oxen for the
burnt offerings, the
threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
And king David said to Ornan,
Nay; but I will
verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer
burnt offerings without cost.
“No,” replied King David, “I
insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you, nor will I offer
burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the
burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at
Gibeon.
For the tabernacle of the LORD that Moses had made in the wilderness and the altar of
burnt offering were presently at the high place in
Gibeon,
Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.
Then David said, “Here shall be the house of the LORD God, as well as the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”
The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should
sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to
burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to
bless in his name for ever.
The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were set apart
forever to
consecrate the most holy things, to
burn incense before the LORD, to minister before Him, and to
pronounce blessings in His name
forever.
And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:
Whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, they were to serve regularly before the LORD in the numbers prescribed for them.
And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered
burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the
morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:
The next day they offered sacrifices and presented burnt offerings to the LORD: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, along with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.
And Solomon went up thither to the
brasen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand
burnt offerings upon it.
Solomon offered sacrifices there before the LORD on the bronze altar in the Tent of Meeting, where he offered a thousand burnt offerings.
And Solomon told out
threescore and ten thousand men to bear
burdens, and
fourscore thousand to
hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.
So he conscripted 70,000
porters, 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors.
Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to
dedicate it to him, and to
burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual
shewbread, and for the
burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an
ordinance for ever to Israel.
Behold, I am about to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God to
dedicate to Him for
burning fragrant incense before Him, for displaying the
showbread continuously, and for making
burnt offerings every morning and evening as well as on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts of the LORD our God. This is ordained for Israel
forever.
But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?
But who is able to build a house for Him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain Him? Who then am I, that I should build a house for Him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before Him?
And he set
threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of
burdens, and
fourscore thousand to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.
Solomon made 70,000 of them
porters, 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors.
He made also ten lavers, and put five on the right hand, and five on the left, to wash in them: such things as they offered for the burnt offering they washed in them; but the sea was for the priests to wash in.
He also made ten basins for washing and placed five on the south side and five on the north. The parts of the
burnt offering were
rinsed in them, but the priests used the Sea for washing.
Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps, that they should
burn after the manner before the
oracle, of pure gold;
the lampstands of pure gold and their lamps, to burn in front of the inner sanctuary as prescribed;
Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house.
When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.
Moreover Solomon
hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered
burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the
brasen altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the
burnt offerings, and the meat offerings, and the fat.
Then Solomon consecrated the middle of the
courtyard in front of the house of the LORD, and there he offered the
burnt offerings and the fat of the peace offerings, since the bronze altar he had made could not contain all these offerings.
Then Solomon offered
burnt offerings unto the LORD on the altar of the LORD, which he had built before the
porch,
At that time Solomon offered
burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of the LORD he had built in front of the
portico.
And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their
apparel; his cupbearers also, and their
apparel; and his
ascent by which he went up into the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.
the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and
attire of his attendants and cupbearers, and the
burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away.
And Solomon
slept with his fathers, and he was
buried in the city of David his father: and
Rehoboam his son reigned in his
stead.
And Solomon rested with his fathers and was
buried in the city of his father David. And his son
Rehoboam reigned in his place.
Thy father made our yoke
grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the
grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
“Your father put a heavy yoke on us. But now you should
lighten the
burden of your father’s service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father
chastised you with whips, but I will
chastise you with scorpions.
Whereas my father
burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father
scourged you with whips, I will
scourge you with scorpions.’”
And
Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was
buried in the City of David. And his son
Abijah reigned in his place.
And they
burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening
burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the
shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the
candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to
burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have
forsaken him.
Every morning and every evening they present
burnt offerings and
fragrant incense to the LORD. They set out the rows of
showbread on the
ceremonially clean table, and every evening they light the lamps of the gold lampstand. We are carrying out the requirements of the LORD our God, while you have
forsaken Him.
So
Abijah slept with his fathers, and they
buried him in the city of David: and
Asa his son reigned in his
stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
Then
Abijah rested with his fathers and was
buried in the City of David. And his son
Asa reigned in his place, and in his days the land was at peace for ten years.
And also concerning Maachah the mother of
Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an
idol in a
grove: and
Asa cut down her
idol, and stamped it, and
burnt it at the
brook Kidron.
And they
buried him in his own
sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and
divers kinds of spices prepared by the
apothecaries’ art: and they made a very great
burning for him.
And he was
buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a
bier that was full of spices and various
blended perfumes; then they made a great fire in his honor.
Now
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was
buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was
buried with them in the City of David. And his son Jehoram reigned in his place.
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his people made no
burning for him, like the
burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired.
Howbeit they
buried him in the city of David, but not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died, to no one’s
regret, and was
buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And he sought
Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was
hid in Samaria,) and brought him to
Jehu: and when they had slain him, they
buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. So the house of
Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.
Then
Jehu looked for
Ahaziah, and
Jehu’s soldiers captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. So
Ahaziah was brought to
Jehu and put to death. They
buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” So no one was left from the house of
Ahaziah with the strength to rule the kingdom.
Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the
burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses, with
rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David.
Moreover, Jehoiada put the oversight of the house of the LORD into the hands of the
Levitical priests, whom David had appointed over the house of the LORD, to offer
burnt offerings to the LORD as is written in the Law of Moses, with
rejoicing and song, as ordained by David.
And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada,
whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer
withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered
burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.
When they were finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada to make with it the articles for the house of the LORD—utensils for the service and for the burnt offerings, dishes, and other objects of gold and silver. Throughout the days of Jehoiada, burnt offerings were presented regularly in the house of the LORD.
And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they
buried him in the city of David, but they
buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was
buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the
burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And
Amaziah his son reigned in his
stead.
The accounts of the sons of
Joash, as well as the many pronouncements about him and about the restoration of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son
Amaziah reigned in his place.
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and
burned incense unto them.
When
Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as his own gods, bowed before them, and
burned sacrifices to them.
Wherefore the anger of the LORD was
kindled against
Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
Therefore the anger of the LORD
burned against
Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this people’s gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
They carried him back on horses and buried him with his fathers in the City of Judah.
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he
transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to
burn incense upon the altar of incense.
But when Uzziah grew powerful, his
arrogance led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to
burn incense on the altar of incense.
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to
burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to
burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
Then Uzziah was
wroth, and had a
censer in his hand to
burn incense: and while he was
wroth with the priests, the
leprosy even rose up in his
forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar.
Uzziah, with a
censer in his hand to offer incense, was
enraged. But while he
raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense,
leprosy broke out on his
forehead.
So Uzziah
slept with his fathers, and they
buried him with his fathers in the field of the
burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a
leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his
stead.
And Uzziah rested with his fathers and was
buried near them in a field of
burial that belonged to the kings; for the people said, “He was a
leper.” And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
And Jotham
slept with his fathers, and they
buried him in the city of David: and
Ahaz his son reigned in his
stead.
And Jotham rested with his fathers and was
buried in the City of David. And his son
Ahaz reigned in his place.
Moreover he
burnt incense in the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and
burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
Moreover,
Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of
Hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.
And in every several city of Judah he made high places to
burn incense unto other gods, and
provoked to anger the LORD God of his fathers.
In every city of Judah he built high places to offer incense to other gods, and so he
provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers.
And
Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they
buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the
sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and
Hezekiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Ahaz rested with his fathers and was
buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son
Hezekiah reigned in his place.
Also they have shut up the doors of the
porch, and put out the lamps, and have not
burned incense nor offered
burnt offerings in the holy place unto the God of Israel.
They also shut the doors of the
portico and
extinguished the lamps. They did not
burn incense or present
burnt offerings in the Holy Place of the God of Israel.
My sons, be not now
negligent: for the LORD hath chosen you to stand before him, to serve him, and that ye should minister unto him, and
burn incense.
Now, my sons, do not be
negligent, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, to minister before Him, and to
burn incense.”
Then they went in to
Hezekiah the king, and said, We have
cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of
burnt offering, with all the vessels thereof, and the
shewbread table, with all the vessels thereof.
Then they went in to King
Hezekiah and reported, “We have
cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of
burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the
showbread with all its utensils.
And the priests killed them, and they made
reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an
atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the
burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.
And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a sin offering, to make
atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered the
burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.
And
Hezekiah commanded to offer the
burnt offering upon the altar. And when the
burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began also with the
trumpets, and with the instruments ordained by David king of Israel.
And
Hezekiah ordered that the
burnt offering be sacrificed on the altar. When the
burnt offering began, the song of the LORD and the
trumpets began as well, accompanied by the instruments of David king of Israel.
And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers
sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the
burnt offering was finished.
The whole assembly was worshiping, the singers were singing, and the trumpeters were playing. All this continued until the burnt offering was completed.
Then
Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated
yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and
thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and
thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart
burnt offerings.
Then
Hezekiah said, “Now that you have consecrated
yourselves to the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and
thank offerings to the house of the LORD.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and
thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing brought
burnt offerings.
And the number of the
burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was
threescore and ten bullocks, an hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a
burnt offering to the LORD.
The number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not
flay all the
burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had
sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to
sanctify themselves than the priests.
However, since there were not enough priests to skin all the
burnt offerings, their
Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had been consecrated. For the Levites had been more
diligent in
consecrating themselves than the priests had been.
And also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order.
Furthermore, the
burnt offerings were abundant, along with the fat of the peace offerings and the drink offerings for the
burnt offerings. So the service of the house of the LORD was established.
Then they killed the
passover on the
fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were
ashamed, and
sanctified themselves, and brought in the
burnt offerings into the house of the LORD.
And on the
fourteenth day of the second month they slaughtered the
Passover lamb. The priests and Levites were
ashamed, and they consecrated themselves and brought
burnt offerings to the house of the LORD.
And
Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for
burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give
thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD.
Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests and Levites—each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites—for the
burnt offerings and peace offerings, for ministry, for giving
thanks, and for singing praises at the gates of the LORD’s dwelling.
He appointed also the king’s portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, to wit, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths, and for the new moons, and for the set feasts, as it is written in the law of the LORD.
The king contributed from his own possessions for the regular morning and evening burnt offerings and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, as written in the Law of the LORD.
Hath not the same
Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and
burn incense upon it?
Did not
Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar, and on it you shall
burn sacrifices’?
And
Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they
buried him in the chiefest of the
sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And
Manasseh his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was
buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
So
Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they
buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Manasseh rested with his fathers and was
buried at his palace. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
And he
burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and
cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
Then he
burned the bones of the priests on their altars. So he
cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
Also they were over the bearers of
burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were
scribes, and officers, and
porters.
were over the laborers and
supervised all who did the work, task by task. Some of the Levites were
secretaries, officers, and gatekeepers.
Because they have
forsaken me, and have
burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and
burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be
quenched.’
And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD,
Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families of the people to offer to the LORD, as is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the bulls.
And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were
busied in offering of
burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests, since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up
burnt offerings and fat until
nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day, to keep the
passover, and to offer
burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king
Josiah.
So on that day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for
celebrating the
Passover and offering
burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD, according to the command of King
Josiah.
His servants therefore took him out of that
chariot, and put him in the second
chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was
buried in one of the
sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem
mourned for
Josiah.
So his servants took him out of his
chariot, put him in his second
chariot, and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. And
Josiah was
buried in the tomb of his fathers, and all Judah and Jerusalem
mourned for him.
And they
burnt the house of God, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and
burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer
burnt offerings
thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice
burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered
burnt offerings
thereon unto the LORD, even
burnt offerings morning and evening.
They set up the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD—both the morning and evening burnt offerings—even though they feared the people of the land.
They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;
They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily based on the number prescribed for each day.
And afterward offered the continual
burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of the LORD that were consecrated, and of every one that willingly offered a
freewill offering unto the LORD.
After that, they presented the regular
burnt offerings and those for New Moons and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD, as well as all the
freewill offerings brought to the LORD.
From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.
On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered
burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel,
ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a
burnt offering unto the LORD.
Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and a sin offering of 12 male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.
And they said unto me, The
remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great
affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are
burned with fire.
And they told me, “The
remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are
burned with fire.”
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are
buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’
sepulchres, that I may build it.
and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city where my fathers are buried, so that I may rebuild it.”
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they
fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the
rubbish which are
burned?
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these
burnt stones back to life from the mounds of
rubble?”
And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of
burdens is decayed, and there is much
rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
Meanwhile, the people of Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much
rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the wall.”
They which builded on the wall, and they that bare
burdens, with those that
laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.
But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver;
yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
The governors before me had
heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine
plus forty shekels of silver. Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the
bondage was heavy upon this people.
Each day one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand the food
allotted to the governor, because the
burden on the people was so heavy.
For the
shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual
burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an
atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
for the
showbread, for the regular grain offerings and
burnt offerings, for the Sabbath offerings, for the New Moons and appointed feasts, for the holy offerings, for the sin offerings to make
atonement for Israel, and for all the duties of the house of our God.
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
We have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the
donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our God to
burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law.
In those days saw I in Judah some
treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and
lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of
burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I
testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals.
In those days I saw people in Judah
treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on
donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I
warned them against selling food on that day.
And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.
When the evening shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem, just before the Sabbath, I ordered that the gates be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no load could enter on the Sabbath day.
But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very
wroth, and his anger
burned in him.
Queen Vashti, however, refused to come at the king’s command brought by his eunuchs. And the king became
furious, and his anger
burned within him.
For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for
bondmen and
bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not
countervail the king’s damage.
For my people and I have been sold out to destruction, death, and
annihilation. If we had merely been sold as menservants and maidservants, I would have remained silent, because no such distress would
justify burdening the king.”
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered
burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer
burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have
sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
