The
burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and
anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the
viper and
fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young
asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.
This is the
burden against the beasts of the Negev: Through a land of
hardship and distress, of
lioness and lion, of
viper and flying serpent, they carry their wealth on the backs of
donkeys and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people of no profit to them.
And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not
spare: so that there shall not be found in the
bursting of it a
sherd to take fire from the
hearth, or to take water
withal out of the pit.
Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far,
burning with his anger, and the
burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of
indignation, and his tongue as a
devouring fire:
Behold, the Name of the LORD comes from
afar, with
burning anger and dense smoke. His lips are full of
fury, and His tongue is like a
consuming fire.
For
Tophet is ordained of old;
yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of
brimstone,
doth kindle it.
For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready for the king. Its funeral
pyre is deep and wide, with
plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the LORD, like a
torrent of
burning sulfur, sets it
ablaze.
And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.
The peoples will be
burned to ashes, like thorns cut down and set
ablaze.
The sinners in
Zion are afraid;
fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the
devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with
everlasting burnings?
And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into
brimstone, and the land thereof shall become
burning pitch.
Edom’s streams will be turned to tar, and her soil to sulfur; her land will become a
blazing pitch.
And
Lebanon is not sufficient to
burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a
burnt offering.
Lebanon is not sufficient for fuel, nor its animals enough for a
burnt offering.
Therefore he hath poured upon him the
fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it
burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
So He poured out on them His
furious anger and the fierceness of battle. It
enveloped them in flames, but they did not understand; it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be
burned; neither shall the flame
kindle upon thee.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not
overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be
scorched; the flames will not set you
ablaze.
Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy
burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor
wearied thee with incense.
You have not brought Me sheep for
burnt offerings, nor honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not
burdened you with offerings, nor
wearied you with
frankincense.
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast
wearied me with thine
iniquities.
You have not bought Me sweet cane with your silver, nor satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have
burdened Me with your sins; you have
wearied Me with your
iniquities.
Then shall it be for a man to
burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself;
yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread;
yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a
graven image, and falleth down
thereto.
It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it to warm himself, and he kindles a fire and bakes his bread; he even fashions it into a god and worships it; he makes an
idol and bows down to it.
He
burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth
roast, and is satisfied:
yea, he warmeth himself, and saith,
Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
He
burns half of it in the fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the
roast and is satisfied. Indeed, he warms himself and says, “
Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”
And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have
burned part of it in the fire;
yea, also I have
baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have
roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an
abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
And no one considers in his heart, no one has the knowledge or insight to say, “I
burned half of it in the fire, and I
baked bread on its coals; I
roasted meat and I
ate. Shall I make something
detestable with the rest of it? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
Bel boweth down,
Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a
burden to the
weary beast.
They
stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the
burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.
The gods cower; they
crouch together, unable to
relieve the
burden; but they themselves go into captivity.
Behold, they shall be as
stubble; the fire shall
burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
Surely they are like
stubble; the fire will
burn them up. They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. There will be no coals to warm them or fire to sit beside.
For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall
clap their hands.
You will indeed go out with joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will
burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will
clap their hands.
Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar, for My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations.”
Enflaming
yourselves with idols under every green tree,
slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?
who
burn with
lust among the oaks, under every
luxuriant tree, who slaughter your children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to
undo the heavy
burdens, and to let the
oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to
untie the cords of the yoke, to set the
oppressed free and
tear off every yoke?
For I the LORD love judgment, I
hate robbery for
burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an
everlasting covenant with them.
For
Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that
burneth.
For
Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep still, until her righteousness shines like a bright light, her salvation like a
blazing torch.
As when the melting fire
burneth, the fire causeth the waters to
boil, to make thy name known to thine
adversaries, that the nations may
tremble at thy presence!
as fire kindles the
brushwood and causes the water to
boil, to make Your name known to Your enemies, so that the nations will
tremble at Your presence!
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
Our holy and beautiful temple, where our fathers praised You, has been
burned with fire, and all that was
dear to us lies in ruins.
A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;
to a people who continually
provoke Me to My face, sacrificing in the gardens and
burning incense on altars of brick,
Which say, Stand by
thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that
burneth all the day.
They say, ‘Keep to
yourself; do not come near me, for I am holier than you!’ Such people are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that
burns all day long.
Your
iniquities, and the
iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have
burned incense upon the mountains, and
blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their
bosom.
both for your
iniquities and for those of your fathers,” says the LORD. “Because they
burned incense on the mountains and
scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former deeds.”
He that killeth an ox is as if he
slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an
oblation, as if he offered
swine’s blood; he that
burneth incense, as if he blessed an
idol.
Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man;
whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood;
whoever offers
frankincense is like one who blesses an
idol. Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.
And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have
forsaken me, and have
burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
I will
pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they have
forsaken Me to
burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.
The young lions
roared upon him, and
yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are
burned without inhabitant.
The young lions have
roared at him; they have
growled with a loud voice. They have laid waste his land; his cities lie in ruins, without inhabitant.
For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and
burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not
transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the
harlot.
“For long ago you broke your yoke and
tore off your chains, saying, ‘I will not serve!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down as a
prostitute.
Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my
fury come forth like fire, and
burn that none can
quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins of your hearts, O men of Judah and people of Jerusalem. Otherwise, My wrath will break out like fire and
burn with no one to
extinguish it, because of your evil deeds.”
I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and
burst the bonds.
I will go to the powerful and speak to them. Surely they know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.” But they too, with one
accord, had broken the yoke and
torn off the chains.
To what purpose cometh there to me incense from
Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your
burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.
What use to Me is
frankincense from
Sheba or sweet cane from a distant land? Your
burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please Me.”
The
bellows are
burned, the lead is consumed of the fire; the founder melteth in vain: for the wicked are not
plucked away.
The
bellows blow fiercely, blasting away the lead with fire. The refining proceeds in vain, for the wicked are not
purged.
Will ye
steal, murder, and commit
adultery, and
swear falsely, and
burn incense unto
Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
Will you
steal and murder, commit
adultery and
perjury,
burn incense to
Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known,
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my
fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall
burn, and shall not be
quenched.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, My anger and My
fury will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field and the produce of the land, and it will
burn and not be
extinguished.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Add your
burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat
yourselves!
For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, I did not merely command them about burnt offerings and sacrifices,
And they have built the high places of
Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of
Hinnom, to
burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of
Hinnom so they could
burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I never commanded, nor did it even enter My mind.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called
Tophet, nor the valley of the son of
Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall
bury in
Tophet, till there be no place.
So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of
Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. For they will
bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.
And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
They will be exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the host of heaven which they have loved, served, followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones will not be gathered up or buried, but will become like dung lying on the ground.
For the mountains will I take up a
weeping and
wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a
lamentation, because they are
burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.
I will take up a
weeping and
wailing for the mountains, a
dirge over the wilderness pasture, for they have been
scorched so no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard. Both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled; they have gone away.
Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?
Who is the man wise enough to understand this? To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may explain it? Why is the land destroyed and
scorched like a desert, so no one can pass through it?
Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to which they have been
burning incense, but these gods certainly will not save them in their time of
disaster.
For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to
burn incense unto
Baal.
Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, O Judah; the altars of shame you have set up—the altars to
burn incense to
Baal—are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’
For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to
provoke me to anger in offering incense unto
Baal.
The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed
disaster against you on account of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have brought upon themselves,
provoking Me to anger by
burning incense to
Baal.”
When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer
burnt offering and an
oblation, I will not accept them: but I will
consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence.
Although they may fast, I will not
listen to their cry; although they may offer
burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will finish them off by sword and famine and plague.”
And the people to whom they
prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to
bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
And the people to whom they
prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword. There will be no one to
bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out their own evil upon them.
And I will make thee to pass with thine enemies into a land which thou knowest not: for a fire is
kindled in mine anger, which shall
burn upon you.
Then I will
enslave you to your enemies in a land you do not know, for My anger will
kindle a fire that will
burn against you.”
They shall die of
grievous deaths; they shall not be
lamented; neither shall they be
buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
“They will die from deadly diseases. They will not be
mourned or
buried, but will lie like dung on the ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”
Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be
buried, neither shall men
lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves
bald for them:
“Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be
buried or
mourned, nor will
anyone cut himself or
shave his head for them.
And thou, even
thyself, shalt discontinue from thine
heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have
kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall
burn for ever.
Thus saith the LORD; Take
heed to
yourselves, and bear no
burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;
This is what the LORD says: Take
heed for
yourselves; do not carry a load or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.
Neither carry forth a
burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but
hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
You must not carry a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath day, but you must keep the Sabbath day holy, just as I commanded your forefathers.
And it shall come to pass, if ye
diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no
burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but
hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
If, however, you
listen carefully to Me, says the LORD, and bring no load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, and keep the Sabbath day holy, and do no work on it,
And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD.
And people will come from the cities of Judah and the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, and from the foothills, the hill country, and the Negev, bringing
burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and
frankincense, and
thank offerings to the house of the LORD.
But if ye will not
hearken unto me to
hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a
burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I
kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall
devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be
quenched.
But if you do not
listen to Me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will
kindle an
unquenchable fire in its gates to
consume the citadels of Jerusalem.’”
Because my people hath forgotten me, they have
burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to
stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
Yet My people have forgotten Me. They
burn incense to worthless idols that make them
stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient roads to walk on
rutted bypaths instead of on the
highway.
Because they have
forsaken me, and have
estranged this place, and have
burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in this place to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have ever known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
They have built also the high places of
Baal, to
burn their sons with fire for
burnt offerings unto
Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:
They have built high places to
Baal on which to
burn their children in the fire as offerings to
Baal—something I never commanded or mentioned, nor did it even enter My mind.
And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a
potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall
bury them in
Tophet, till there be no place to
bury.
and you are to
proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will
shatter this nation and this city, like one
shatters a
potter’s
jar that can never again be repaired. They will
bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to
bury them.
And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be
defiled as the place of
Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have
burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.
The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be
defiled like that place, Topheth—all the houses on whose rooftops they
burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”
And thou, Pashur, and all that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be
buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast
prophesied lies.
And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon, and there you will die and be
buried—you and all your friends to whom you have
prophesied these lies.’”
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a
burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was
weary with
forbearing, and I could not stay.
If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire
burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become
weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
For I have set My face against this city to bring
disaster and not good, declares the LORD. It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.’
O house of David, thus saith the LORD;
Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor, lest my
fury go out like fire, and
burn that none can
quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
O house of David, this is what the LORD says: ‘
Administer justice every morning, and
rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of his
oppressor, or My wrath will go forth like fire and
burn with no one to
extinguish it because of their evil deeds.
He shall be
buried with the
burial of an
ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
He will be
buried like a
donkey,
dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem.
And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the
burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What
burden? I will even
forsake you, saith the LORD.
“Now when this people or a prophet or priest asks you, ‘What is the
burden of the LORD?’ you are to say to them, ‘What
burden? I will
forsake you, declares the LORD.’
And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The
burden of the LORD, I will even
punish that man and his house.
As for the prophet or priest or
anyone who claims, ‘This is the
burden of the LORD,’ I will
punish that man and his household.
And the
burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man’s word shall be his
burden; for ye have
perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.
But refer no more to the
burden of the LORD, for each man’s word becomes the
burden, so that you
pervert the words of the living God, the LORD of Hosts, our God.
But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;
But if you claim, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ then this is what the LORD says: Because you have said, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ and I specifically told you not to make this claim,
And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be
lamented, neither gathered, nor
buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.
Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be
mourned, gathered, or
buried. They will be like dung lying on the ground.
And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
The peaceful meadows have been silenced because of the LORD’s burning anger.
And they
fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto
Jehoiakim the king; who
slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.
They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King
Jehoiakim, who had him put to the sword and his body thrown into the
burial place of the common people.
For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will
burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will break the yoke off their necks and
tear off their bonds, and no longer will strangers
enslave them.
And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and
burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto
Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to
provoke me to anger.
And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come in, set it on fire, and
burn it, along with the houses of those who
provoked Me to anger by
burning incense to
Baal on their rooftops and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.
Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer
burnt offerings, and to
kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
nor will the priests who are Levites ever fail to have a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to present sacrifices.”
Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go and speak to
Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall
burn it with fire:
The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go and speak to
Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him that this is what the LORD says: “Behold, I am about to deliver this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will
burn it down.
But thou shalt die in peace: and with the
burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they
burn odours for thee; and they will
lament thee, saying,
Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the LORD.
you will die in peace. As spices were
burned for your fathers, the former kings who preceded you, so people will
burn spices for you and
lament, ‘
Alas, O master!’ For I Myself have spoken this word, declares the LORD.”
Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and
burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a
desolation without an inhabitant.
Behold, I am going to give the command, declares the LORD, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, capture it, and
burn it down. And I will make the cities of Judah a
desolation, without inhabitant.”
Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the
hearth burning before him.
Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning before him.
Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made
intercession to the king that he would not
burn the roll: but he would not hear them.
Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to
burn the
scroll, he would not
listen to them.
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had
burned the roll, and the words which
Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,
After the king had
burned the
scroll containing the words that
Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s
dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which
Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath
burned.
“Take another
scroll and rewrite on it the very words that were on the original
scroll, which
Jehoiakim king of Judah has
burned.
And thou shalt say to
Jehoiakim the king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast
burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?
You are to
proclaim concerning
Jehoiakim king of Judah that this is what the LORD says: You have
burned the
scroll and said, ‘Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon would surely come and destroy this land and deprive it of man and beast?’
Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to
Baruch the
scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which
Jehoiakim king of Judah had
burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.
Then Jeremiah took another
scroll and gave it to the
scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and at Jeremiah’s
dictation he wrote on it all the words of the
scroll that
Jehoiakim king of Judah had
burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.
And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.
Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down.
For though ye had
smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and
burn this city with fire.
Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
Then said Jeremiah unto
Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou
wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be
burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
Then Jeremiah said to
Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be
burned down, and you and your household will
survive.
But if thou
wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall
burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.
But if you do not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans. They will
burn it down, and you
yourself will not escape their
grasp.’”
So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
All your wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans. And you
yourself will not escape their
grasp, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city will be
burned down.”
And the Chaldeans
burned the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and
brake down the walls of Jerusalem.
The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king and to the houses of the people, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.
Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the
brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;
“In the sight of the Jews,
pick up some large stones and
bury them in the clay of the brick
pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes.
And I will
kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall
burn them, and carry them away
captives: and he shall
array himself with the land of Egypt, as a
shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.
I will
kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and
Nebuchadnezzar will
burn those temples and take their gods as
captives. So he will
wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a
shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.
He shall break also the images of Beth-shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.
He will
demolish the sacred pillars of the temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, and he will
burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”
Because of their wickedness which they have committed to
provoke me to anger, in that they went to
burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
because of the evil they have done. They
provoked Me to anger by continuing to
burn incense and to serve other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew.
But they
hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to
burn no incense unto other gods.
But they did not
listen or
incline their ears; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop
burning incense to other gods.
