For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.
For Moses had given the inheritance east of the Jordan to the other two and a half tribes. But he granted no inheritance among them to the Levites.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people
melt:
but I wholly followed the LORD my God.
Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people
melt with fear, I remained
loyal to the LORD my God.
As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.
But the descendants of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the descendants of Judah.
But they did not drive out the
Canaanites who lived in
Gezer. So the
Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day,
but they are forced laborers.
But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh, had no sons,
but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and
Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
But Zelophehad son of Hepher (the son of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh) had no sons
but only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah,
Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
Now
Manasseh had the land of Tappuah:
but Tappuah on the border of
Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim;
The region of Tappuah belonged to
Manasseh,
but Tappuah itself, on the border of
Manasseh, belonged to Ephraim.
And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of
Manasseh: the coast of
Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:
From there the border continued southward to the
Brook of Kanah. There were cities belonging to Ephraim among the cities of
Manasseh,
but the border of
Manasseh was on the north side of the
brook and ended at the Sea.
Yet the children of
Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities;
but the
Canaanites would dwell in that land.
But the descendants of
Manasseh were unable to occupy these cities, because the
Canaanites were determined to stay in this land.
Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were
waxen strong, that they put the
Canaanites to tribute;
but did not utterly drive them out.
However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they put the
Canaanites to forced labor;
but they failed to drive them out completely.
And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me
but one lot and one portion to
inherit, seeing I am a great people,
forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto?
Then the sons of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one portion as an inheritance? We have many people, because the LORD has blessed us abundantly.”
But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the
Canaanites, though they have iron
chariots, and though they be strong.
because the hill country will be yours as well. It is a forest; clear it, and its
farthest limits will be yours. Although the
Canaanites have iron
chariots and although they are strong, you can drive them out.”
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and
Gad, and
Reuben, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
The Levites, however, have no portion among you, because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. And
Gad,
Reuben, and half the tribe of
Manasseh have already received the inheritance that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them beyond the Jordan to the east.”
But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to
Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
But they had given the fields and villages around the city to
Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Now to the one half of the tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given possession in
Bashan:
but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
(To the half-tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given land in
Bashan, and to the other half Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan among their brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them,
But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye
rebel to day against the LORD, that to
morrow he will be
wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.
And now, would you turn away from the LORD? If you
rebel today against the LORD,
tomorrow He will be
angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us:
but rebel not against the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.
If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us.
But do not
rebel against the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our God.
And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?
But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:
That is why we said, ‘Let us take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the
replica of the altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices,
but as a witness between us and you.’
But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.
Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you;
but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and
Esau: and I gave unto
Esau mount
Seir, to possess it;
but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
and to Isaac I gave Jacob and
Esau. I gave
Esau Mount
Seir to possess,
but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you,
but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
But I would not
hearken unto
Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
but I would not
listen to
Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from his hand.
And I sent the
hornet before you, which
drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the
Amorites;
but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
I sent the
hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings before you,
but not by your own sword or bow.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:
but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a
jealous God; he will not
forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God; He is a
jealous God; He will not
forgive your rebellion or your sins.
And the people said unto Joshua,
Nay;
but we will serve the LORD.
“No!” replied the people. “We will serve the LORD!”
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and
big toes.
And the LORD was with Judah; and he
drave out the inhabitants of the mountain;
but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had
chariots of iron.
The LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country;
but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had
chariots of iron.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
The Benjamites, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the Benjamites.
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they
smote the city with the edge of the sword;
but they let go the man and all his family.
So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
Neither did
Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns:
but the
Canaanites would dwell in that land.
At that time
Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean, Taanach,
Dor, Ibleam,
Megiddo, and their villages; for the
Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the
Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
When Israel became stronger, they pressed the
Canaanites into forced labor,
but they never drove them out completely.
Neither did
Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol;
but the
Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
Zebulun failed to drive out the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahalol; so the
Canaanites lived among them and served as forced laborers.
But the Asherites dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
So the Asherites lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land, because they did not drive them out.
Neither did
Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath;
but he dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.
Naphtali failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. So the Naphtalites also lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land,
but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served them as forced laborers.
But the
Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in
Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
And the
Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres,
Aijalon, and Shaalbim.
But when the house of Joseph grew in strength, they pressed the
Amorites into forced labor.
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land,
but you shall
tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you;
but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a
snare to you.”
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges,
but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD;
but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother.
But when the Israelites
cried out to the LORD, He raised up Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save them.
But when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto
Eglon the king of Moab.
And again they
cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of
Gera, a left-handed
Benjamite, as their deliverer. So they sent him with tribute to
Eglon king of Moab.
But he himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.
And
Barak said unto her, If thou
wilt go with me, then I will go:
but if thou
wilt not go with me, then I will not go.
Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go;
but if you will not go with me, I will not go.”
And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And
Deborah arose, and went with
Barak to Kedesh.
“I will certainly go with you,”
Deborah replied, “
but the road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the hand of a woman.” So
Deborah got up and went with
Barak to Kedesh,
But Barak pursued after the
chariots, and after the host, unto
Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
Then
Barak pursued the
chariots and army as far as
Harosheth-hagoyim, and the whole army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a single man was left.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of
Canaan in Taanach by the waters of
Megiddo; they took no gain of money.
Kings came and fought; then the kings of
Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of
Megiddo,
but they took no
plunder of silver.
He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth
butter in a lordly
dish.
He asked for water, and she gave him milk. In a magnificent
bowl she brought him curds.
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD!
But may those who love You
shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.
And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:
but ye have not obeyed my voice.
And I said to you: ‘I am the LORD your God. You must not fear the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’
But you did not obey Me.”
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?
but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’
But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”
Then
Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
So
Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had told him.
But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the
daytime.
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let him
contend for himself with the one who has
torn down his altar.”
But the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, and he
blew a
trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.
So the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, who
blew the ram’s horn and
rallied the Abiezrites behind him.
And
Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak
but this once: let me prove, I pray thee,
but this once with the
fleece; let it now be dry only upon the
fleece, and upon all the ground let there be
dew.
Then
Gideon said to God, “Do not be
angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me one more test with the
fleece. This time let it be dry, and the ground covered with
dew.”
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn back and leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back,
but ten thousand remained.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of
whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “There are still too many people. Take them down to the water, and I will
sift them for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go.
But if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
And the number of them that
lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men:
but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
And the number of those who
lapped the water with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others
knelt to drink.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand.
But all the others are to go home.”
So the people took
victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents
but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
But if you are afraid to do so, then go down to the camp with your servant Purah
So
Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had
but newly set the watch: and they
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They
blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands.
And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the
gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the
vintage of Abi-ezer?
But Gideon answered them, “Now what have I accomplished compared to you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the
grape harvest of Abiezer?
And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
But the leaders of Succoth asked, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?”
And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
From there he went up to Penuel and asked the same from them,
but the men of Penuel gave the same
response as the men of Succoth.
And he said unto Jether his
firstborn, Up, and
slay them.
But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
So he said to Jether, his
firstborn, “Get up and kill them.”
But the young man did not draw his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.
And
Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.
But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The LORD shall rule over you.”
And
Gideon made an
ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a
whoring after it: which thing became a
snare unto
Gideon, and to his house.
From all this
Gideon made an
ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown.
But soon all Israel
prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a
snare to
Gideon and his household.
And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and
slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he
hid himself.
He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal.
But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he
hid himself.
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness,
wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
But the fig tree said unto them, Should I
forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the
grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And the
bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye
anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the
bramble, and
devour the cedars of
Lebanon.
But the thornbush replied, ‘If you really are
anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade.
But if not, may fire come out of the thornbush and
consume the cedars of
Lebanon.’
And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons,
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the men of
Shechem, because he is your brother;)
but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the leaders of
Shechem because he is your brother—
And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
And
Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.
But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and
gat them up to the top of the tower.
But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.
Yet ye have
forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
But you have
forsaken Me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have
sinned: do thou unto us
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.
“We have
sinned,” the Israelites said to the LORD. “Deal with us as You see fit;
but please deliver us
today!”
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
But Jephthah asked them, “If you take me back to fight the
Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?”
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of
Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land:
but the king of
Edom would not
hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab:
but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers to the king of
Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’
but the king of
Edom would not
listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab,
but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon,
but came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the
Arnon.
But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So he gathered all his people,
encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.
Wherefore I have not
sinned against thee,
but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of
Ammon.
I have not
sinned against you,
but you have done me wrong by
waging war against me. May the LORD, the Judge, decide
today between the Israelites and the
Ammonites.”
