We are
confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
We are
confident, then, and would
prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we
persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your
consciences.
Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to
persuade men. What we are is clear to God, and I hope it is clear to your
conscience as well.
For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are
convinced that One died for all, therefore all died.
What harmony is there between Christ and
Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
I speak not this to
condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.
I do not say this to
condemn you. I have said before that you so occupy our hearts that we live and die together with you.
Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our
tribulation.
Great is my confidence in you; great is my pride in you; I am filled with encouragement; in all our troubles my joy overflows.
For, when we were come into
Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
For when we arrived in
Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were pressed from every direction—
conflicts on the outside, fears within.
and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort he had received from you. He told us about your longing, your
mourning, and your zeal for me, so that I
rejoiced all the more.
For behold this
selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you,
yea, what clearing of
yourselves,
yea, what
indignation,
yea, what fear,
yea, what
vehement desire,
yea, what zeal,
yea, what
revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear
yourselves, what
indignation, what
alarm, what longing, what zeal, what
vindication! In every way you have proved
yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
I
rejoice therefore that I have
confidence in you in all things.
I
rejoice that I can have complete
confidence in you.
And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have
oftentimes proved
diligent in many things, but now much more
diligent, upon the great
confidence which I have in you.
And we are sending along with them our brother whose earnestness has been
proven many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his great
confidence in you.
Whether any do
enquire of
Titus, he is my
partner and fellowhelper
concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.
As for
Titus, he is my
partner and fellow worker among you. As for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, to the glory of Christ.
Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—to say nothing of you—would be
ashamed of having been so
confident.
Whiles by the experiment of this
ministration they
glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;
Because of the proof this ministry provides, the saints will
glorify God for your
obedient confession of the gospel of Christ, and for the
generosity of your
contribution to them and to all the others.
But I
beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that
confidence,
wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
I
beg you that when I come I may not need to be as bold as I expect toward those who
presume that we live according to the flesh.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
You are looking at outward appearances. If
anyone is
confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that we belong to Christ just as much as he does.
For his letters, say they, are
weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech
contemptible.
For some say, “His letters are
weighty and forceful, but his physical presence is
unimpressive, and his speaking is of no account.”
Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
Such people should consider that what we are in our letters when absent, we will be in our actions when present.
For I suppose I was not a
whit behind the very chiefest apostles.
I
consider myself in no way inferior to those “
super-apostles.”
And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from
Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being
burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to
anyone; for the brothers who came from
Macedonia supplied my needs. I have
refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will
continue to do so.
That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were
foolishly, in this
confidence of
boasting.
I speak as
concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.
Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak
foolishly,) I am bold also.
Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
Apart from these external trials, I face daily the pressure of my
concern for all the churches.
If I must
boast, I will
boast of the things that show my weakness.
And lest I should be
exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a
thorn in the flesh, the
messenger of
Satan to
buffet me, lest I should be
exalted above measure.
But though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be
accursed.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should
preach a gospel
contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a
curse!
As we said before, so say I now again, If any man
preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be
accursed.
As we have said before, so now I say again: If
anyone is preaching to you a gospel
contrary to the one you received, let him be under a
curse!
For ye have heard of my
conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I
persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:
For you have heard of my former way of life in
Judaism, how severely I
persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.
And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly
zealous of the traditions of my fathers.
I was advancing in
Judaism beyond many of my
contemporaries and was extremely
zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
To
reveal his Son in me, that I might
preach him among the heathen; immediately I
conferred not with flesh and blood:
to
reveal His Son in me so that I might
preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not
rush to
consult with flesh and blood,
Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.
Only after three years did I go up to Jerusalem to
confer with
Cephas, and I stayed with him fifteen days.
To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (
whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in
conference added nothing to me:
But as for the highly esteemed—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show
favoritism—those leaders added nothing to me.
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I
withstood him to the face, because he was to be
blamed.
When
Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood to be
condemned.
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the
curse: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that
continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
All who
rely on works of the law are under a
curse. For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who does not
continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”
Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be
confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth
thereto.
Brothers, let me put this in human terms. Even a human covenant, once it is
ratified, cannot be
canceled or
amended.
And this I say, that the covenant, that was
confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot
disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
What I mean is this: The law that came 430 years later does not
revoke the covenant previously established by God, so as to
nullify the promise.
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
I have
confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment,
whosoever he be.
I am
confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is troubling you will bear the judgment,
whoever he may be.
But if ye
bite and
devour one another, take
heed that ye be not
consumed one of another.
But if you keep on
biting and
devouring one another, watch out, or you will be
consumed by one another.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of
meekness;
considering thyself, lest thou also be
tempted.
Brothers, if someone is caught in a
trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch
yourself, or you also may be
tempted.
As many as desire to make a fair
shew in the flesh, they
constrain you to be
circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.
Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to
compel you to be
circumcised. They only do this to avoid persecution for the cross of Christ.
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
in which you used to walk when you
conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.
Among whom also we all had our
conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh,
fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
All of us also lived among them at one time,
fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and
indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.
Having abolished in his flesh the
enmity, even the law of commandments
contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of
twain one new man, so making peace;
by
abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to
create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace
In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
In Him and through faith in Him we may enter God’s presence with boldness and confidence.
That ye put off
concerning the former
conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts;
to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its
deceitful desires;
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
This is a great
mystery: but I speak
concerning Christ and the church.
This
mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.
Being
confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
being
confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and
confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart. For in my chains and in my
defense and
confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me.
And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing
confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
And most of the brothers,
confident in the Lord by my chains, now
dare more greatly to speak the word without fear.
The latter do so in love, knowing that I am appointed for the
defense of the gospel.
What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in
pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do
rejoice,
yea, and will
rejoice.
What then is the issue? Just this: that in every way, whether by false motives or true, Christ is preached. And in this I
rejoice.
Yes, and I will
continue to
rejoice,
And having this
confidence, I know that I shall
abide and
continue with you all for your
furtherance and joy of faith;
Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and will
continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
Only let your
conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind
striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Nevertheless,
conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit,
contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,
Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
since you are
encountering the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
Therefore if you have any encouragement in Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and
compassion,
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God:
Who, existing in the form of God, did not
consider equality with God something to be
grasped,
And that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling.
Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence,
continue to work out your salvation with fear and
trembling.
Watch out for those dogs, those workers of evil, those mutilators of the flesh!
For we are the
circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and
rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no
confidence in the flesh.
For it is we who are the
circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no
confidence in the flesh—
Though I might also have
confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath
whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
though I myself could have such
confidence. If
anyone else thinks he has grounds for
confidence in the flesh, I have more:
as to zeal,
persecuting the church; as to righteousness in the law, faultless.
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the
excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may
win Christ,
More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the
surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I
consider them
rubbish, that I may gain Christ
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the
fellowship of his sufferings, being made
conformable unto his death;
I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the
fellowship of His sufferings, being
conformed to Him in His death,
Brethren, I count not myself to have
apprehended: but this one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Brothers, I do not
consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is
ahead,
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
But I
rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
Now I
rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have revived your
concern for me. You were indeed
concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am,
therewith to be
content.
I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances.
Now ye
Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from
Macedonia, no church communicated with me as
concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
And as you
Philippians know, in the early days of the gospel, when I left
Macedonia, no church but you partnered with me in the matter of giving and receiving.
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
If ye
continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;
whereof I Paul am made a minister;
if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope of the gospel you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
For I would that ye knew what great
conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at
Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face,
For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the
stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
For although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I delight to see your orderly condition and firm faith in Christ.
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him,
Blotting out the
handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was
contrary to us, and took it out of the way,
nailing it to his cross;
having
canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away,
nailing it to the cross!
And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having
nourishment ministered, and
knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
He has lost
connection to the head, from whom the whole body, supported and
knit together by its joints and ligaments, grows as God causes it to grow.
Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity,
lust, evil desires, and
greed, which is
idolatry.
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with
thanksgiving;
Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and
patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
and
continually recalling before our God and Father your work of faith, your labor of love, and your
enduring hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power, in the Holy Spirit, and with great conviction—just as you know we lived among you for your sake.
As you are aware, we had already
endured suffering and shameful treatment in
Philippi. But in the face of strong opposition, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God.
But we were gentle among you, even as a
nurse cherisheth her children:
On the
contrary, we were gentle among you, like a
nursing mother caring for her children.
Ye are witnesses, and God also, how
holily and justly and unblameably we
behaved ourselves among you that believe:
You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous, and
blameless our
conduct was among you who believed.
For this cause also
thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which
effectually worketh also in you that believe.
And we
continually thank God because, when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as the true word of God—the word which is now at work in you who believe.
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have
persecuted us; and they please not God, and are
contrary to all men:
who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out as well. They are displeasing to God and hostile to all men,
Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins
alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the
uttermost.
hindering us from telling the Gentiles how they may be saved. As a result, they
continue to
heap up their sins to full capacity; the utmost wrath has come upon them.
And sent
Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you
concerning your faith:
That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in
sanctification and honour;
each of you must know how to
control his own body in
holiness and honor,
not in
lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God;
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren,
concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not
grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
