And he had much business in the cities of Judah: and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem.
and kept vast supplies in the
cities of Judah. He also had warriors in Jerusalem who were mighty men of
valor.
These waited on the king, beside those whom the king put in the
fenced cities throughout all Judah.
These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
Then the king of Israel said, Take ye Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the
city, and to
Joash the king’s son;
And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the governor of the
city and to
Joash the king’s son,
And he set judges in the land throughout all the
fenced cities of Judah,
city by
city,
He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah.
And what cause
soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their
cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even
warn them that they
trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not
trespass.
For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in their
cities—whether it regards
bloodshed or some other
violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances—you are to
warn them, so that they will not
incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not
incur guilt.
And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
So the people of Judah gathered to seek the LORD, and indeed, they came from all the cities of Judah to seek Him.
Now
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the
city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the
City of David. And his son Jehoram reigned in his place.
And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with
fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the
firstborn.
Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, as well as the fortified
cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the
firstborn.
Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired.
Howbeit they buried him in the
city of David, but not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died, to no one’s
regret, and was buried in the
City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
So they went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the heads of the families of Israel. And when they came to Jerusalem,
And all the people of the land
rejoiced: and the
city was quiet, after that they had slain
Athaliah with the sword.
and all the people of the land
rejoiced. And the
city was quiet, because
Athaliah had been put to the sword.
And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the
cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye
hasten the matter.
Howbeit the Levites
hastened it not.
So he gathered the priests and Levites and said, “Go out to the
cities of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the house of your God. Do it quickly.” The Levites, however, did not make
haste.

conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the
city of David, but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the
City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the
cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the
cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

And he went forth and
warred against the Philistines, and
brake down the wall of
Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of
Ashdod, and built
cities about
Ashdod, and among the Philistines.
Uzziah went out to
wage war against the Philistines, and he
tore down the walls of
Gath, Jabneh, and
Ashdod. Then he built
cities near
Ashdod and among the Philistines.
Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers.
He also built cities in the hill country of Judah and fortresses and towers in the forests.
And Jotham
slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the
city of David: and
Ahaz his son reigned in his
stead.
And Jotham rested with his fathers and was buried in the
City of David. And his son
Ahaz reigned in his place.
And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the
city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the
City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.
The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.
The Philistines had also
raided the
cities of the foothills and the Negev of Judah, capturing and occupying Beth-shemesh,
Aijalon, and Gederoth, as well as Soco, Timnah, and Gimzo with their villages.
And in every several
city of Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and
provoked to anger the LORD God of his fathers.
In every
city of Judah he built high places to offer incense to other gods, and so he
provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers.
And
Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the
city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the
sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and
Hezekiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the
city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son
Hezekiah reigned in his place.
Then
Hezekiah the king rose early, and gathered the rulers of the
city, and went up to the house of the LORD.
Early the next morning King
Hezekiah gathered the
city officials and went up to the house of the LORD.
And the couriers traveled from
city to
city through the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh as far as
Zebulun; but the people
scorned and
mocked them.
Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the
cities of Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own
cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the
cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their
cities, each to his own property.
And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the
cities of Judah, they also brought in the
tithe of oxen and sheep, and the
tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps.
And the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the
cities of Judah also brought a
tithe of their herds and flocks and a
tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their God, and they laid them in large heaps.
And next him were
Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the
cities of the priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:
Under his authority,
Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully distributed portions to their fellow priests in their
cities, according to their divisions, old and young alike.
Also of the sons of Aaron the priests, which were in the fields of the suburbs of their
cities, in every several
city, the men that were expressed by name, to give portions to all the males among the priests, and to all that were reckoned by
genealogies among the Levites.
As for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who lived on the farmlands around each of their
cities or in any other
city, men were designated by name to distribute a portion to every male among the priests and to every
Levite listed by the
genealogies.
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and thought to
win them for himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified
cities, intending to
conquer them for himself.
He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
he consulted with his leaders and commanders about
stopping up the waters of the springs outside the
city, and they helped him carry it out.
Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired
Millo in the
city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the
City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the
city, and spake
comfortably to them, saying,
Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the
city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,
Then they
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to
affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the
city.
Then the Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to
frighten and
terrify them in order to capture the
city.
Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him very great wealth.
This same
Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of
Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the
city of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
It was
Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Spring of
Gihon and channeled it down to the west side of the
City of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all that he did.
Now after this he built a wall without the
city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the
City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified
cities of Judah.
And he took away the strange gods, and the
idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the
city.
He removed the foreign gods and the
idol from the house of the LORD, along with all the altars he had built on the temple mount and in Jerusalem, and he
dumped them outside the
city.
And so did he in the
cities of
Manasseh, and Ephraim, and
Simeon, even unto
Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, when he had
purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the
city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, in order to
cleanse the land and the temple,
Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the
city, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his
city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their
cities, and all Israel in their
cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.
By the seventh month, the Israelites had settled in their towns, and the people assembled as one man in Jerusalem.
And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble
Asnapper brought over, and set in the
cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
and the rest of the peoples whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal
deported and settled in the
cities of Samaria and elsewhere west of the Euphrates.
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad
city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that
rebellious and wicked
city, restoring its walls, and repairing its foundations.
Be it known now unto the king, that, if this
city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay
toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt
endamage the revenue of the kings.
Let it now be known to the king that if that
city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, they will not pay tribute, duty, or
toll, and the royal treasury will suffer.
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this
city is a
rebellious city, and
hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved
sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this
city destroyed.
that a search should be made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you will discover and
verify that the
city is a
rebellious city,
harmful to kings and provinces,
inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this
city was destroyed.
We
certify the king that, if this
city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
We
advise the king that if this
city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, you will have no dominion west of the Euphrates.
And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this
city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and
sedition have been made therein.
I issued a decree, and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this
city has revolted against kings from ancient times,
engaging in rebellion and
sedition.
Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
Now, therefore, issue an order for these men to stop, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.
Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Let our leaders represent the whole assembly. Then let
everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”
These are the words of
Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month of Chislev, in the
twentieth year, while I was in the
citadel of
Susa,
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the
city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the
city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the
city of my fathers’
sepulchres, that I may build it.
and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city where my fathers are buried, so that I may rebuild it.”
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the
city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the
citadel to the temple, for the
city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
But the gate of the fountain repaired Shallun the son of
Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of
Mizpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and the wall of the
pool of
Siloah by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go down from the
city of David.
The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of
Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of
Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of Shelah near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the
City of David.
Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.
Now the
city was large and
spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.
These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his
city;
These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
So the priests, and the Levites, and the
porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the
Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their
cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their
cities.
So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
And that they should
publish and
proclaim in all their
cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and
fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and
myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.
So they proclaimed this message and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive,
myrtle, palm, and other
leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”
And they took strong
cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells
digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.
They captured fortified
cities and fertile land and took houses full of all goods, wells already
dug, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they
ate and were filled; they grew fat and delighted in Your great goodness.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the
tithes in all the
cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities.
Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the remaining nine were to dwell in their own towns.
Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the
cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their
cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—
And
Joel the son of Zichri was their
overseer: and Judah the son of Senuah was second over the
city.
Joel son of Zichri was the officer over them, and Judah son of Hassenuah was over the Second District of the
city.
All the Levites in the holy
city were two hundred
fourscore and four.
The Levites in the holy city totaled 284.
And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance.
The rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the villages of Judah, each on his own inheritance.
And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.
At the Fountain Gate they
climbed the steps of the
City of David on the
ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.
And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the
tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the
cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah
rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.
And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and
tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah
rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving.
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this
city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by
profaning the sabbath.
Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this
disaster on us and on this
city? And now you are
rekindling His wrath against Israel by
profaning the Sabbath!”
That in those days, when the king
Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in
Shushan the palace,
In those days King
Xerxes sat on his royal throne in the
citadel of
Susa.
And when these days were
expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in
Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;
At the end of this time, in the garden court of the royal palace, the king held a seven-day feast for all the people in the
citadel of
Susa, from the least to the greatest.
And let the king
appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto
Shushan the palace, to the house of the women unto the
custody of Hege the king’s
chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for
purification be given them:
and let the king
appoint commissioners in each province of his kingdom to
assemble all the beautiful young women into the
harem at the
citadel of
Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king’s
eunuch in charge of the women, and let them be given beauty treatments.
Now there was at the
citadel of
Susa a Jewish man from the tribe of Benjamin named
Mordecai son of
Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of
Kish.
So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto
Shushan the palace, to the
custody of Hegai, that
Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the
custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
When the king’s command and edict had been proclaimed, many young women gathered at the
citadel of
Susa under the care of Hegai.
Esther was also taken to the palace and placed under the care of Hegai, the
custodian of the women.
The posts went out, being
hastened by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given in
Shushan the palace. And the king and
Haman sat down to drink; but the
city Shushan was
perplexed.
The couriers left,
spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the
citadel of
Susa. Then the king and
Haman sat down to drink, but the
city of
Susa was in confusion.
When
Mordecai perceived all that was done,
Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on
sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the
city, and
cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
When
Mordecai learned of all that had happened, he
tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the
city,
wailing loudly and bitterly.
So Hatach went forth to
Mordecai unto the street of the
city, which was before the king’s gate.
So Hathach went out to
Mordecai in the
city square in front of the king’s gate,
And let this
apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may
array the man
withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on
horseback through the street of the
city, and
proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
Let the
robe and the horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them
array the man the king wants to honor and
parade him on the horse through the
city square,
proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!’”
Then took
Haman the
apparel and the horse, and
arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on
horseback through the street of the
city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
So
Haman took the
robe and the horse,
arrayed Mordecai, and
paraded him through the
city square, crying out before him, “This is what is done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor!”
Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every
city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to
slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would
assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the
spoil of them for a prey,
By these letters the king permitted the Jews in each and every
city the right to
assemble and defend themselves, to destroy, kill, and
annihilate all the forces of any people or province hostile to them, including women and children, and to
plunder their possessions.
So the posts that
rode upon mules and camels went out, being
hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. And the decree was given at
Shushan the palace.
The couriers
rode out in
haste on their royal horses, pressed on by the command of the king. And the edict was also issued in the
citadel of
Susa.
And
Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal
apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the
city of
Shushan rejoiced and was
glad.
Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal garments of blue and white, with a large gold crown and a purple
robe of fine linen. And the
city of
Susa shouted and
rejoiced.
And in every province, and in every
city,
whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and
gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.
In every province and every
city, wherever the king’s edict and decree reached, there was joy and
gladness among the Jews, with feasting and
celebrating. And many of the people of the land themselves became Jews, because the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.
The Jews gathered themselves together in their
cities throughout all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their
hurt: and no man could
withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
In each of the provinces of King
Xerxes, the Jews assembled in their
cities to attack those who sought to
harm them. No man could
withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen upon all peoples.
And in
Shushan the palace the Jews
slew and destroyed five hundred men.
In the
citadel of
Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men,
On that day the number of those that were slain in
Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
On that day the number of those killed in the
citadel of
Susa was reported to the king,
And the king said unto
Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in
Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of
Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.
who said to Queen
Esther, “In the
citadel of
Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, including
Haman’s ten sons. What have they done in the rest of the royal provinces? Now what is your petition? It will be given to you. And what further do you request? It will be fulfilled.”
And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every
city; and that these days of
Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the
memorial of them perish from their seed.
These days should be remembered and celebrated by every generation, family, province, and
city, so that these days of
Purim should not fail to be observed among the Jews, nor should the memory of them
fade from their descendants.
With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built
desolate places for themselves;
with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves cities now in ruins,
And he dwelleth in
desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
he will dwell in ruined
cities, in abandoned houses destined to become
rubble.
Men
groan from out of the
city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.
From the
city, men
groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out, yet God charges no one with
wrongdoing.
When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
When I went out to the city gate and took my seat in the public square,
He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
He scorns the
tumult of the
city and never hears the shouts of a driver.
O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed
cities; their
memorial is perished with them.
The enemy has come to eternal ruin, and You have uprooted their
cities; the very memory of them has
vanished.
Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.
Blessed be the LORD, for He has shown me His loving devotion in a city under siege.
There is a river, the streams
whereof shall make
glad the
city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the
city of our God, in the mountain of his
holiness.
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, His holy mountain.
Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount
Zion, on the sides of the north, the
city of the great King.
Beautiful in
loftiness, the joy of all the earth, like the peaks of Zaphon is Mount
Zion, the
city of the great King.
God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
God is in her citadels; He has shown Himself to be a fortress.
