city of the LORD of hosts, in the
city of our God: God will establish it for ever.

city of the LORD of Hosts, in the
city of our God: God will establish her
forever.
Selah Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.
consider her ramparts, tour her citadels, that you may tell the next generation.
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and
strife in the
city.
They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
Who will bring me into the strong
city? who will lead me into
Edom?
Who will bring me to the fortified
city? Who will lead me to
Edom?
For God will save
Zion, and will build the
cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
For God will save
Zion and rebuild the
cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it.
There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall
shake like
Lebanon: and they of the
city shall
flourish like grass of the earth.
May there be an abundance of grain in the land; may it
sway atop the hills. May its fruit trees
flourish like the forests of
Lebanon, and its people like the grass of the field.
His foundation is in the holy mountains.
He has founded His city on the holy mountains.
Glorious things are spoken of thee, O
city of God.
Selah.
Glorious things are ascribed to you, O
city of God.
Selah I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.
Every morning I will remove all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off every
evildoer from the
city of the LORD.
They
wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no
city to dwell in.
Some
wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a
city in which to dwell.
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a
city of
habitation.
He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live.
And there he maketh the
hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a
city for
habitation;
He causes the
hungry to settle there, that they may establish a
city in which to dwell.
Who will bring me into the strong
city? who will lead me into
Edom?
Who will bring me to the fortified
city? Who will lead me to
Edom?
Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:
Jerusalem is built up as a city united together,
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the
city, the
watchman waketh but in vain.
Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the
city, its
watchmen stand guard in vain.
She crieth in the chief place of
concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the
city she uttereth her words, saying,
She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
Beside the gates to the
city, at the entrances she
cries out:
She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
She has sent out her maidservants; she calls out from the heights of the city.
For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the heights of the city,
The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
The wealth of the rich man is his fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
When it goeth well with the righteous, the
city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is
shouting.
When the righteous
thrive, the
city rejoices, and when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
By the blessing of the upright the
city is
exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
By the blessing of the upright a
city is built up, but by the mouth of the wicked it is
torn down.
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
He who is slow to anger is better than a
warrior, and he who controls his temper is greater than one who captures a
city.
The rich man’s wealth is his strong
city, and as an high wall in his own
conceit.
A rich man’s wealth is his fortified city; it is like a high wall in his imagination.
A brother
offended is harder to be won than a strong
city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
An
offended brother is harder to
win than a fortified
city, and disputes are like the bars of a castle.
A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof.
A wise man scales the
city of the mighty and pulls down the
stronghold in which they trust.
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who does not control his temper.
Scornful men bring a
city into a
snare: but wise men turn away wrath.
Mockers inflame a city, but the wise turn away anger.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
Her husband is known at the city gate, where he sits among the elders of the land.
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
Wisdom makes the wise man stronger than ten rulers in a city.
And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
Then too, I saw the burial of the wicked who used to go in and out of the holy place, and they were praised in the
city where they had done so. This too is
futile.
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
There was a small city with few men. A mighty king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege ramps against it.
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
Now a poor wise man was found in the city, and he saved the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.
The labour of the
foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the
city.
The
toil of a
fool wearies him, for he does not know the way to the
city.
I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
I will arise now and go about the city, through the streets and squares. I will seek the one I love. So I sought him but did not find him.
The
watchmen that go about the
city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
The
watchmen that went about the
city found me, they
smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my
veil from me.
Your country is
desolate, your
cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers
devour it in your presence, and it is
desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
How is the faithful
city become an
harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness
lodged in it; but now murderers.
See how the faithful
city has become a
harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness resided within her, but now only murderers!
And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning. After that you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the
cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly
desolate,
Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until the
cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left unoccupied and the land is
desolate and
ravaged,
And it came to pass in the days of
Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
Now in the days that
Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of
Aram marched up to
wage war against Jerusalem. He was accompanied by Pekah son of Remaliah the king of Israel, but he could not overpower the
city.
Cry out and
shout, thou inhabitant of
Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.
Cry out and sing, O
citizen of
Zion, for great among you is the Holy One of Israel.”
That thou shalt take up this
proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the
oppressor ceased! the golden
city ceased!
you will sing this song of contempt against the king of Babylon: How the
oppressor has ceased, and how his
fury has ended!
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
who turned the world into a desert and destroyed its
cities, who refused to let the
captives return to their homes?”
Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the
iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their
cities.
Howl, O gate; cry, O
city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.
Wail, O gate! Cry out, O
city!
Melt away, all you Philistines! For a cloud of smoke comes from the north, and there are no stragglers in its ranks.
The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a
city, and it shall be a
ruinous heap.
This is the burden against Damascus: “Behold, Damascus is no longer a
city; it has become a
heap of ruins.
The
cities of Aroer are
forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
The
cities of Aroer are
forsaken; they will be left to the flocks, which will lie down with no one to fear.
In that day shall his strong
cities be as a
forsaken bough, and an
uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be
desolation.
In that day their strong
cities will be like
forsaken thickets and summits, abandoned to the Israelites and to utter
desolation.
And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
“So I will
incite Egyptian against Egyptian; brother will fight against brother,
neighbor against
neighbor,
city against
city, and kingdom against kingdom.
In that day shall five
cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of
Canaan, and
swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The
city of destruction.
In that day five
cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of
Canaan and
swear allegiance to the LORD of Hosts. One of them will be called the
City of the Sun.
Thou that art full of stirs, a
tumultuous city, a
joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.
O
city of
commotion, O town of
revelry? Your slain did not die by the sword, nor were they killed in battle.
Ye have seen also the breaches of the
city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower
pool.
You saw that there were many breaches in the walls of the
City of David. You collected water from the lower
pool.
Is this your
joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her
afar off to
sojourn.
Is this your
jubilant city, whose origin is from antiquity, whose feet have taken her to settle far away?
Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?
Who
planned this against Tyre, the
bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are
renowned on the earth?
He stretched out his hand over the sea, he
shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant
city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.
The LORD has stretched out His hand over the sea; He has made kingdoms
tremble. He has given a command that the strongholds of
Canaan be destroyed.
Take an
harp, go about the
city, thou
harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet
melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
“Take up your
harp,
stroll through the
city, O forgotten
harlot. Make sweet
melody, sing many a song, so you will be remembered.”
The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
The
city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to
rubble.
For thou hast made of a
city an
heap; of a defenced
city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no
city; it shall never be built.
Indeed, You have made the
city a
heap of
rubble, the fortified town a ruin. The fortress of strangers is a
city no more; it will never be rebuilt.
Therefore shall the strong people
glorify thee, the
city of the terrible nations shall fear thee.
Therefore, a strong people will honor You. The
cities of
ruthless nations will
revere You.
In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong
city; salvation will God
appoint for walls and bulwarks.
In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.
For He has humbled those who dwell on high; He lays the lofty city low. He brings it down to the ground; He casts it into the dust.
Yet the defenced
city shall be
desolate, and the
habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the
calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and
consume the branches thereof.
For the fortified
city lies deserted— a
homestead abandoned, a wilderness
forsaken. There the
calves graze, and there they lie down; they strip its branches bare.
Woe to
Ariel, to
Ariel, the
city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.
Woe to you, O
Ariel, the
city of
Ariel where David camped! Year upon year let your festivals
recur.
Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers;
yea, upon all the houses of joy in the
joyous city:
and for the land of my people, overgrown with thorns and briers— even for every house of
merriment in this
city of
revelry.
Because the palaces shall be
forsaken; the multitude of the
city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild
asses, a pasture of flocks;
When it shall
hail, coming down on the forest; and the
city shall be low in a low place.
But
hail will level the forest, and the
city will sink to the depths.
The
highways lie waste, the
wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath
despised the
cities, he regardeth no man.
The
highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The treaty has been broken, the witnesses are
despised, and human life is disregarded.
Look upon
Zion, the
city of our
solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet
habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.
Look upon
Zion, the
city of our appointed feasts. Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not
wander; its tent pegs will not be pulled up, nor will any of its cords be broken.
Now it came to pass in the
fourteenth year of king
Hezekiah, that
Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced
cities of Judah, and took them.
Neither let
Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this
city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Do not let
Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this
city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
Where is the king of
Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the
city of
Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced
cities into
ruinous heaps.
Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; in days of old I
planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should
crush fortified
cities into piles of
rubble.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this
city, nor shoot an
arrow there nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this
city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
He will go back the way he came, and he will not enter this city,’ declares the LORD.
For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
‘I will defend this city and save it for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”
And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city.
And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.
O
Zion, that bringest good
tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good
tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the
cities of Judah, Behold your God!
Go up on a high mountain, O
Zion,
herald of good news. Raise your voice loudly, O Jerusalem,
herald of good news. Lift it up, do not be afraid! Say to the
cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”
Let the wilderness and the
cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that
Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them
shout from the top of the mountains.
Let the desert and its
cities raise their voices; let the villages of
Kedar cry
aloud. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them cry out from the mountaintops.
That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:
who confirms the message of His servant and fulfills the counsel of His messengers, who says of Jerusalem, ‘She will be inhabited,’ and of the cities of Judah, ‘They will be rebuilt, and I will restore their ruins,’
I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my
city, and he shall let go my
captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will raise up Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild My city and set My exiles free, but not for payment or reward, says the LORD of Hosts.”
For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name.
who indeed call
yourselves after the holy
city and
lean on the God of Israel; the LORD of Hosts is His name.
Awake,
awake; put on thy strength, O
Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy
city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the
uncircumcised and the unclean.
For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall
inherit the Gentiles, and make the
desolate cities to be inhabited.
For you will spread out to the right and left; your descendants will dispossess the nations and inhabit the
desolate cities.
O thou
afflicted,
tossed with
tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
The sons also of them that
afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that
despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The
city of the LORD, The
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you; all who
reviled you will fall facedown at your feet and call you the
City of the LORD,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore the places long
devastated; they will renew the ruined
cities, the desolations of many generations.
And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A
city not
forsaken.
And they will be called the Holy People, the Redeemed of The LORD; and you will be called Sought Out, A
City Not
Forsaken.
Thy holy
cities are a wilderness,
Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a
desolation.
Your holy
cities have become a wilderness.
Zion has become a wasteland and Jerusalem a
desolation.
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
Hear the
uproar from the
city;
listen to the voice from the temple! It is the voice of the LORD, repaying His enemies what they deserve!
For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
For I am about to
summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north,” declares the LORD. “Their kings will come and set up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all her surrounding walls and all the other
cities of Judah.
For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced
city, and an iron
pillar, and
brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
Now behold, this day I have made you like a fortified
city, an iron
pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land.
The young lions
roared upon him, and
yelled, and they made his land waste: his
cities are burned without inhabitant.
The young lions have
roared at him; they have
growled with a loud voice. They have laid waste his land; his
cities lie in ruins, without inhabitant.
But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
But where are the gods you made for
yourselves? Let them rise up in your time of trouble and save you if they can; for your gods are as numerous as your
cities, O Judah.
Turn, O
backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a
city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to
Zion:
“Return, O faithless children,” declares the LORD, “for I am your master, and I will take you—one from a
city and two from a family—and bring you to
Zion.
